Re: anyone bored?
That was initially discussed but the actually data thats there (including pics) has been on there for about 6 months (we initially just put a pattern page up till i had time to start on this) and there hasnt been 1 complaint about speed yet. Like I said most of them start to read while pix are loading but most ppl understand that they are getting free premium content that is 10x as good as the rivals "paid" content so they don't mind. My mom is on about as slow a line as u can get (aver 19.8) out in the boonies in ky and she can get it ok, so i'm assuming most ppl wont have troubles, maybe a wait but no troubles. Thats why I wanted to have them done in pdf so ppl could save them, and already they print them out and put into binders. on this machine at least the optimized image is indistinguishable. I agree that the uniqueness of the site makes a difference but... I am getting kicked out so I'll email you the optimized picture tomorrow after I look at it on a higher resolution monitor. Actually, slow loading has never been an issue with them, so we stuck with that format. It's a pretty unique way that it is done in that type of business and the "10 second" rule doesnt apply as this is the only place to get the info. The pix cant be reduced much farther because detail is key in this type of thing and black and white would never fly. Also, I just looked and he has the quality parameter set to 85. I just resaved at 10 and on this machine at least I can't tell the difference. I am using GIMP, which has a Unix version I believe, though I have never try to make thumbnails with it. hth Dana On 4/14/05, Dana <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > oh jesus, scratch black and white. Re: anyone bored?
hmm that came up ok if a bit slow... I think slow is ok if the person can see the thing coming. Whereas the pdf just sort of sat there saying it was downloading but just looking like a blank page. When I was researching internet marketing they had a rule of thumb that the average person won't wait more than 12 seconds for a site before they get bored and leave. This site is a little different -- it looks as though it might be of great interest to someone who was interested in flyfishing. but still, four minutes clearly won't do. But you knew that. The one I looked at is 47k... I can see that you might want that level of detail but hmm hmm what about black and white? Uploading Excel data on CF Page to SQL Server directly
I want to give users the ability to upload database on CF pages. A table in SQL Server is already defined, and what they need to do is just uploading the data from an Excel file into the existing table by clicking on 'Submit/Upload button'. The Excel file has the same columns as the table in SQL Server has. They can either append or delete the existing data and insert the new data when uploading the data. This is something like Data Transformation Services (DTS). Please let me know how to approach. tia ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. More Page Break Problems
I got it all to work with CSS page-break-before:always. Then my boss had to add 3 areas. Took awhile but I got it working again with the new sections. Then we ran into a problem with the page header. In order to change it for each of the 3 new sections we have the main section and them surounded with the cfdocumentsection tags. Thing is, now anytime a section is longer then 1 page, it adds blank pages inbetween. Any ideas? Just so I'm clear on this: when I look in my CF Administrator, it has: [ ] Timeout Requests after (seconds) [60] but it's unchecked so... doesn't that mean my CF system will not timeout long-running requests? And isn't that the default? That was what I meant - just that out-of-the-box, CF does not kill long-running requests. Am I right or wrong? I host a bunch of sites there and didn't need them to do anything to get remoting going (with 6.1 or 7). Worked out of the box. I'm really not sure what they do, I just know that when I need to use it i have to ask them to enable it. I guess I shoulda asked if the version you are using is the dev version or a paid version, might be a difference there. If both databases go down (power failure in the facility), is it acceptable to have: - a few seconds dataloss? - a manual restart sequence? - a restore from last backup situation? I think MSSQL clustering is super expensive, IIRC, so I *think* that's not going to fly with the folks with the $. Also, it would be nice if we didn't have to do a merge, under any circumstance, because it might involve, in some situations, use of UUIDs instead of normal identities/sequences etc., among other things. The ideal solution would be transparent to the application and wouldn't put any undue restrictions on schema. I know, call me optimistic. :-/ Thanks again, Jamie ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. In JavaScript 1.3 and over you can use the identity operator ("===" - three equals signs). This returns a "strict" equals. Two references to the same, exact object would return true, but two references to object which contain the same data would not. Subtle, but very useful in certain situations. Re: CF 7 and Flash Remoting
first I would make sure flash remoting is in fact installed and running, open up your flash ide, click on "help" at the top right of toolbar and the 1st dropdown item should say "welcome to flash remoting", if not then its not installed. One reason that "just a database" won't do is a simple matter of being honest to our proposal. That is, somebody here told 'em we'd do it, and now we've gotta do it. The reason it went into the proposal is: 1: Clustered databases sound "cool" and "sexy" (Yes, that's a real reason :) 2: Unplanned failures (Very Rare): It would be nice if the motherboard fried on one machine, and we could fairly quickly (ideally, seamlessly) get the other up and running. 3: Planned outages (i.e., maintenance -- Rare): It would also be nice to take a machine out of the cluster to, say, add memory. We have no reason, at this point, to give any priority whatsoever to load balancing, BTW. Does this help? I'd be happy to elaborate further! Hi All, My class path has one directory in it: /usr/local/www/lib It has newer files in it than the original directory /usr/local/coldfusion/lib. A developer claimed that the older class file was being used so he put this together: #resource#: [#resolveResource(resource)#] The returned resource claims that it's using a file from /usr/local/coldfusion/lib How can that be, it's not in the class path! Come on - this is a hello world example on the timeline. I don't think we need to strictly type it :) I'd rather see him get the example working first, then we can deal with classes and best practices. I could have sent him a whole bunch of strictly typed AS2 classes that abstract the remoting calls, handle client-side data caching, etc - all of which I consider best practices - but that would be overkill for a simple example don't you think? chris On 4/14/05 2:45 PM, "Kevin Aebig" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Not to insult, but simply taking out the strict typing doesn't constitute a > fix. RE: anyone bored?
well it seems like there must be something else going on, even though thats a valid point but most of his users already are in the know about that. Could that be one of the problems? Users may not realize they are getting blocked when they click the image. RE: anyone bored?
there are lots of pictures and if you recall I asked about if cfdocument was slow to anyone else a few weeks ago, takes me a bout 1 min each to load. Most of the users arent dial up users and the old style (just html outout) was ok hummm From: "Dawson, Michael" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2005 5:47 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: anyone bored? It worked for me, but took a couple of minutes. It ended up being ~26MB. Maybe people expected instant response on their dial-up? Is there any way you can cut down on this size?
