special chars in xml?

2007-09-12 Thread Paul Hastings
my xml torture continues. i need to squirt an sql where clause wrapped in xml
at
a server, something like:

WHERE a = 40 AND b 42

if i push this sql onto the node's xml attributes, cf8's only escaping the last
,

spatialQuery=xmlElemNew(axl,SPATIALQUERY);
spatialQuery.xmlAttributes[where]=a = 40 AND b  42;
//thanks brianfor the following
arrayAppend(axl[arcxml].xmlChildren[1].xmlChildren[1].xmlChildren,spatialQuery);

produces the where clause below which the server chokes on:

where=a = 40 AND b lt; 42

if i follow good practices xmlFormat() the where clause before i stuff it
into the xml attributes, the part of lt; gets double escaped and the
server chokes on it:

where=a amp;gt;= 40 AND b amp;lt; 42

not sure if i'm just my usual xml blind or if this is a bug in cf8.

any ideas?

thanks.

Can you store the clause as CDATA, or is that going to make using it
later on too difficult?

You can't use CDATA for attribute values, if I recall correctly.

Newbie guide to installing / configuring CF on Unix

2007-09-12 Thread Giles Roadnight
Hi All

I have some experience of setting up Cold Fusion on windows but where
I am working at the moment all the CF servers are unix adn have
ColdFusion MX 7 Enterprise installed.

We have about 5 cf servers running on the same box but one of them is
not well. When I start It I get loads of errors (no web server
configured to service your request).

What I want to do is install this server again from scratch but leave
the other servers in tact.

How do I do this? I assume it's a bit more complicated than running
the connector software.

Do I have to run the coldfusion installer (I have no idea if that's
even on the server) or do I run a file that's there already.

I need the CFIDE / Cfdocs directories and so on set up again.

Are there any really simple tutorials for this sort of thing? I've not
got much experience at all with unix so am feeling a bit lost!

Thanks in advance

Giles.

trying to select the last inserted value within a CFTRANSACTION block would
still return the incorrect id if another thread had also performed an insert
 at the same time.

Semantics: the database always correctly returns the last inserted ID.
The objective of preventing another thread from inserting another ID

just wasn't met.

A quick Google search reveals this article by Simon, where he seems to

For the last inserted ID issue it should.

Yes, you could use CFtransaction for this type of isolation, but this can

No it doesn't.

Serializability does not require some sort of locking, it requires that
parallel transactions will have the same outcome as if they were
executed one after another. Locking is an implementation detail, not
some purpose. MVCC based databases exploit the difference between
mathematical serializability and serializability according to the SQL
standard to make sure that exclusive locking is not necessary: no
objects will be exclusively locked just because they participate in a
serializable transaction. And for instance MS SQL Server uses intend
locks on tables (which are not exclusive) combined with exclusive locks
on rows (only to be escalated when a transaction has taken 1250 locks).

Re: Ajax cfgrid bind problem

2007-09-12 Thread Mike Chabot
Dale,
Thanks for helping me troubleshoot this. I used your basic example to
step back and try to troubleshoot this from the start to see where
things break.

The Web root folder is
C:\inetpub\wwwroot\

My code is here
C:\projects\

If I stay inside the Web root, all combinations of virtual
directories, paths, etc. all work with your sample code. For example I
can put park.cfc inside of
C:\inetpub\wwwroot\a\b\c\ and call it as a.b.c.park.getParks(). Or I
can create a virtual directory to that folder as x and write
x.park.getParks().

As soon as I put the CFC in a folder outside of the Web root, the code
no longer works, even though I have a virtual directory set up. This
problem is specific to the new Ajax feature, since the ColdFusion
server has no problems accessing a file outside of the Web root. So
this looks like a bug with the new Ajax feature where virtual
directories are not properly handled in the code that generates the
JavaScript.

To test this, I changed my Web root to point to C:\projects\ and that
code which didn't work started working, even though I am using a
virtual directory so the true location of the Web root shouldn't
matter.

Thanks,
Mike Chabot

Need Code To Convert MGRS To Latitude/Longitude

2007-09-12 Thread Todd Vernon
I'm looking for code that will take a MGRS (Military Grid Reference System)
coordinate and convert it into a latitude/longitude grid coordinate. This
should be code I can use in an application we're building, not an end-user
product. I already have a nice little end user product. This code can be in
JavaScript, CFScript or whatever.

What we're going to do with the code is create a feature that enables the user
to click on a link in an article (which has coordinates) and have it open
Google Earth and have it go directly to the place on the map. We have Google
Earth servers. Google Earth (and their KML code) only accepts
latitude/longitude coordinates.
We already have the ColdFusion code that is stripping out the desired
cooordinates from an XML file. We also already have the KML code (Google Earth

RE: Need Code To Convert MGRS To Latitude/Longitude

2007-09-12 Thread Dave Watts
I'm looking for code that will take a MGRS (Military Grid
Reference System) coordinate and convert it into a
latitude/longitude grid coordinate. This should be code I can
use in an application we're building, not an end-user
product. I already have a nice little end user product. This
code can be in JavaScript, CFScript or whatever.

Have you looked at this?
http://earth-info.nga.mil/GandG/geotrans/index.html

It's an end-user product, but includes source code (C/C++, I suspect) that
you can probably adapt for your own use.

what you want isn't trivial. but have a look at (UTM to/from GCS):

get the code in the usual place:

it should be fairly trivial to do MGRS to UTM (except maybe the variable

Re: Ajax cfgrid bind problem

2007-09-12 Thread gary gilbert
Hi Mike,

if you are using a virtual directory and your cfc is located somewhere else you
still need to be able to get to the cfc using a standard URL.

I have found the the bind always starts at the webroot and goes from there so
in your example you have.

http://mysite/projects

Your bind attribute would need to be cfc:mysite.projects.mycfc.myfunction if
your cfc's are located in another virtual directory your bind attribute should
be.

cfc:myVirtualDir.myCFC.myfunction

A good test is to see use a standard URL to get to your CFC if you reach it
then you know what the path will be.

example url
http://mysite/projects/mycfc.cfc?method=myfunctionreturnformat=jsonargumentcollection=...

Re: Directory Watcher Skipping Files

2007-09-12 Thread Chris Velevitch
Sean Corfield has pointed out that the directory watcher supplied with
CF7 is really an example of the capabilities of the event gateway
feature of CF7 and is NOT production quality robust code. The source
code of the directory watcher is supplied with CF7.

So it looks like I'll have to dive into the Java code and work out the
bugs. I hope I don't have to re-write it to make it work robustly.

Re: Ajax cfgrid bind problem

2007-09-12 Thread Mike Chabot
To clarify slightly:

http://mysite/project/test.cfm works
http://mysite/project/myCFC.cfc works

The CFC path is project.myCFC.function. I can use this path
successfully on the server-side.

The problem is that when I bind cfgrid to the path of
project.myCFC.function, the generated JavaScript that is sent to the
browser instructs the Ajax call to look here:
http://mysite/myCFC.cfc
instead of here:
http://mysite/project/myCFC.cfc

If I move the /project virtual directory so that it is a phycial
subdirectory of the Web root, the problem goes away, but I don't want
to set things up that way for security reasons.

Re: Ajax cfgrid bind problem

2007-09-12 Thread gary gilbert
Mike,

But thats not your problem is it?

Its the fact that as soon as you move your directory out of wwwroot/projects
into c:/projects and point your virtual directory to that you code stops
working and inspecting the url no matter what you try or what mappings you have
in CF admin you still end up with

http://mysite/myCFC instead of http://mysite/projects/mycfc

right?

with cfc:mysite.projects.mycfc.myfunction you still get the above?

After I sent in that last email I re-read your first email again and set it up
exactly as you have it and was able to produce the same results as you are
getting. So at least I can replicate it.

The only problem now is whats the solution...

Creating a CF mapping doesn't seem work. I put in the correct path to the cfc
in the cfajaxproxy tag and it passes without error but produces var
_cf_mycfc=ColdFusion.AjaxProxy.init('/mycfc.cfc','myclass'); without the
correct path info.

I checked the known issues and found the following entry.

69915: The cfajaxproxy tag is not able to correctly locate CFCs that are
in symbolically linked paths on the file system. Ensure that your
CFCs are always available under hard linked paths.

As a workaround or until someone comes up with a solution you could bind to a
URL instead of a CFC.

CFMAIL - should be simple right? wrong

2007-09-12 Thread coldfusion . developer
One of my clients site is hosted at hostmysite.com and we've been trying to get
cfmail
working. The client, companyname.com hosts the domain's DNS and HMS has the
domain listed on their system. I've tried cfmail ... server =localhost per
HMS recommendation
and even tried to point to companyname's mail servers smtp.company.com and it
still
doesn't work. Companyname say they need to know the ip address of the relay to
open it up for incoming requests. HMS says they don't have a relay to give me.

Does anyone have any idea or expereince with this? This has been going on for
over 36 hours.
I've never had this issue with over hosting companies.

Thanks

2007-09-12 Thread Bryan Stevenson
Yes it is ;-)

Now you probably want to know how ;-)

There are quite a few ways to do this...someone will probably post some methods
using regular expressionsyou can also look into the mid/right/left/replace
functions which you can use to break apart the number and put it back together
the way you want.

So if you can be specific on what you want to do (i.e. the patternlike
always remove the 3rd digit as per your example)then I can fire you
something more specific

Is it possible to remove a digit from a multi-digit number IE:

You would have to treat the number as a string, loop over it and
rebuild the string excluding that particular character or digit space.

For your particular example:

cfset OldValue = 2007
cfset NewValue =
cfloop from=1 to=#Len(OldValue)# index=x
cfif x NEQ 3
cfset NewValue = NewValue Mid(OldValue, x, 1)
/cfif
/cfloop

cfoutput#OldValue# vs #NewValue#/cfoutput

If the digits always in the same position you could do a

alternatively if its the same sequence you could find/replace

Is that not what you meant?

RE: remove a number from a series of numbers

2007-09-12 Thread Robert Harrison
Is it possible to remove a digit from a multi-digit number IE:
 2007 would become 207?

You could read the length to get the length to get the number of digits,
Then make a decision as to which digit to remove,
Then based on that and the number of total digits decide how
many digits to read from the beginning of the string,
then use the RIGHT and LEFT string read function to get the
starting and ending digits, then concatenate the beginning and
end reads into a single string.

If you need help with that I can put together a small program, but you
should be able to do with just a few
Cfsets and RIGHT and LEFT.

But thats not your problem is it?

Its the fact that as soon as you move your directory out of wwwroot/projects
into c:/projects and point your virtual directory to that you code stops
working and inspecting the url no matter what you try or what mappings you
have in CF admin you still end up with

 http://mysite/myCFC instead of http://mysite/projects/mycfc

 right?

with cfc:mysite.projects.mycfc.myfunction you still get the above?

After I sent in that last email I re-read your first email again and set it
up exactly as you have it and was able to produce the same results as you are
getting. So at least I can replicate it.

The only problem now is whats the solution...

Creating a CF mapping doesn't seem work. I put in the correct path to the
cfc in the cfajaxproxy tag and it passes without error but produces var
 _cf_mycfc=ColdFusion.AjaxProxy.init('/mycfc.cfc','myclass'); without the
 correct path info.

You can nest CFTRY's to accomplish this.

Something like:

cftry

cfquery name=users datasource=#myDSN#
SELECT user_id FROM users
/cfquery

cfcatch type=database
!---
This could be our timeout issue,
sleep for 2 seconds and try again
---
cfset thisThread = CreateObject(java, java.lang.Thread)
/
cfset thisThread.sleep(2000) /

cftry
cfquery name=users datasource=#myDSN#
SELECT user_id FROM users
/cfquery

cfcatch type=any
!---
Rethrow the error as we cannot recover
---
cfrethrow /
/cfcatch
/cftry
/cfcatch
/cftry

 Dan,
You can nest CFTRY's to accomplish this.

 Something like:

 cftry

   cfquery name=users datasource=#myDSN#
   SELECT user_id FROM users
   /cfquery

   cfcatch type=database
   !---
This could be our timeout issue,
sleep for 2 seconds and try again
   ---
   cfset thisThread = CreateObject(java, java.lang.Thread)
 /
   cfset thisThread.sleep(2000) /

   cftry
   cfquery name=users datasource=#myDSN#
   SELECT user_id FROM users
   /cfquery

   cfcatch type=any
   !---
Rethrow the error as we cannot recover
   ---
   cfrethrow /
   /cfcatch
   /cftry
   /cfcatch
 /cftry

 HTH,

 Rich

RE: CFMAIL - should be simple right? wrong

2007-09-12 Thread Brad Wood
Your best bet would be to get HMS's mail server working (localhost).

Could you be more specific on why that didn't work to begin with?

Look in the mail.log file in coldfusionroot/logs/mail.log to see what
error is happening when CF attempts to send the mail.

Does HMS require authentication when using their mail server. Localhost
would assume that an smtp server was listening that the same server CF
is installed on. I'm kind of surprised they don't use a separate mail
server. Do they have SMTP running on every single one of their CF
servers?

Also, what if you simply leave the server attribute off of the cfmail
tag. Then it will default to what is in CF Administrator.

As far as the relay, if the external mail server has relay set to allow
requests from certain IP's (which isn't the smartest thing in the world,
since IP's can be spoofed to my knowledge) they would need the IP
address of the HMS server which would be sending the mail. Depending on
how HMS's network is set up, that might the actual CF box, or their
firewall.

You said HMS says they don't have a relay to give me. I don't know
what you really mean by that since the external mail server
(smtp.company.com) would be the one relaying the mail. The only
problem HMS site might introduce is if their firewall blocked outgoing
traffic on port 25 but I doubt that.

Hope that helps.

Subject: CFMAIL - should be simple right? wrong

One of my clients site is hosted at hostmysite.com and we've been trying
to get cfmail
working. The client, companyname.com hosts the domain's DNS and HMS has
the
domain listed on their system. I've tried cfmail ... server =localhost
per HMS recommendation
and even tried to point to companyname's mail servers smtp.company.com
and it still
doesn't work. Companyname say they need to know the ip address of the
relay to
open it up for incoming requests. HMS says they don't have a relay to
give me.

Does anyone have any idea or expereince with this? This has been going
on for over 36 hours.
I've never had this issue with over hosting companies.

Thanks

Sorry I should have mentioned that in the initial post. I got the same results
which was why I was looking locally and than asked here.

The local stores had the date around Oct 15th so the only thing I can gather so
far is that they ship today from Publisher but warehouses wont have it ready to
ship til Oct? Local Barnes and Nobles said they could preorder it and have it
by Oct and that since it was classified a text book - it wasnt going to be a
routinely stocked item. That may have been BS though trying to get me to
pre-order cuase I know I have seen former editions on the shelves.

XHTML Style CF?

2007-09-12 Thread Robert Harrison
I've noticed some other programmers are now using a close tag indicator in
stand-alone cftags, like cfset myvar=0 /.

As far as I know it's only an XHTML requirement to close all tags (e.g., br
/) and not a CF issue. Since CF never outputs CFtags to the browser is
this actually necessary?

RE: XHTML Style CF?

2007-09-12 Thread Ryan, Terrence
Well, I do it because I like XHTML formatting.

Additionally there is a suggestion here:
http://livedocs.adobe.com/wtg/public/coding_standards/style.html
that says:

CFML XHTML Compliance

ColdFusion source code cannot quite be written to be purely XHTML-compliant
because of certain tags (cfif / cfelse, cfreturn, cfset) but you should make an
effort to be as XHTML-compliant as possible. cfelse cannot have a closing tag
so it cannot be XHTML-compliant; cfif and cfreturn do not have an
attribute=value syntax so they cannot be XHTML-compliant (but cfif has a
closing /cfif tag and cfreturn can and should have a self-closing /); cfset
does not in general follow the attribute=value syntax and these guidelines
recommend that for readability you do not quote the value in cfset - but cfset
can and should have a self-closing /. This makes the source code more
consistent (across CFML and HTML) and will also help you avoid subtle errors
such as unterminated nested cfmodule calls.

If a simple custom tag invocation is written as XHTML-compliant, i.e., with a
closing /, it will be executed twice as if it were a paired tag with an empty
body. This can be surprising at first and cause subtle bugs if your code
doesn't expect it! You can guard against this in simple custom tags by
enclosing the code with:

cfif thisTag.executionMode is start
...
/cfif

Complex custom tags will probably already use thisTag.hasEndTag and have
different code executed for thisTag.executionMode is start and
thisTag.executionMode is end.

All built-in CFML tags should be written as XHTML-compliant where possible
(cfif, cfelse, cfset and cfreturn are notable exceptions).

Re: XHTML Style CF?

2007-09-12 Thread Ian Skinner
Completely a personal preference thing. Some of us are just more
comfortable keeping to a single style of coding. Thus we don't have to
always be thinking; This line is CFML it does not need a closing
'/'...This line is XHTML, it needs a closing '/'.

Personally it limits the times I make XHTML mistakes by forgetting to
properly close a tag if I always close all tags whether XHTML or CFML.
Except the rare times this can cause an CFML error. But the only
example I can think of is with Custom Tags, and I write my custom tags
to not behave differently with cf_myTag and cf_myTag/.

Dynamic named CFC and method

2007-09-12 Thread Andrew Grosset
I have a cfc in the application scope and I access it like so:

cfset application.aImage.updateIm(argumentCollection=q)

I would like to be able to pass in the cfc name (in this case myImage) and
the method/function (adateIm) dynamically.

If I try this, I get an error: A CFML variable name cannot end with a .
character
cfset a = aImage
cfset b = updateIm
cfset application.#a#.#b#(argumentCollection=q)

I also tried this but then it fails again as updateIm calls another function
within aImage.cfc and it can't see/access it:

cfset z = application[a][b]
cfset z(argumentCollection=q)

This works but I'm not accessing the cfc in the application scope which rather
defeats the purpose of writing it into the application scope.

cfobject component = mycfcs.#a# name = test

cfinvoke component = #test#
method = #b#
returnVariable = z
argumentCollection = #arguments#

Is there a way to access the cfc and method stored in the application scope and
pass in the cfc name and method dynamically?

cfexecute and perl script CF8

2007-09-12 Thread Jaysheel Bhavsar
Hey guys,
I am try to execute a perl scirpt within CF8 but I doesn't seem to work. I
tired to execute it the same way before in the previous version of CF but even
then I wasn't successful.

Here is that my cf page looks like. (its a test page so has nothing else on
it except for the cfexecute tag.)

cfexecute

arguments=/Library/WebServer/Documents/evmCF2/blastImager/WIS_ML1_017_H07_nt.txt
   name=/Library/WebServer/Documents/evmCF2/blastImager/blast_imager-2.pl
/

This perl script does work. If I run it on command line it create a temp.jpeg
file which has the correct Image. Right now its does nothing. When this page
is executed I get no errors, and no file is produced. I have been working on
this for 2 days now without any success please help.

Thank you

2 mail servers, but who's counting. Things are back to normal.

Dynamic named CFC and method

2007-09-12 Thread Andrew Grosset
I have a cfc in the application scope and I access it like so:

cfset application.aImage.updateIm(argumentCollection=q)

I would like to be able to pass in the cfc name (in this case myImage) and
the method/function (adateIm) dynamically.

If I try this, I get an error: A CFML variable name cannot end with a .
character
cfset a = aImage
cfset b = updateIm
cfset application.#a#.#b#(argumentCollection=q)

I also tried this but then it fails again as updateIm calls another function
within aImage.cfc and it can't see/access it:

cfset z = application[a][b]
cfset z(argumentCollection=q)

This works but I'm not accessing the cfc in the application scope which rather

2007-09-12 Thread Brian Kotek
Just realized I left out the pound signs:

cfinvoke component = #application.aImage#
method = #b#
returnVariable = z
argumentCollection = #arguments#

If you want the CFC to be dynamic as well, you can use something like
#application[targetCFC]#, where targetCFC is the variable holding the name
of the application-scoped CFC you want to invoke.

MSSQL Timeout (Connection: reset)

2007-09-12 Thread John Paul Ashenfelter
Folks,

Puzzled about this error message. ColdFusion 7.02/Std on Windows
2003/Web connecting to a different machine running MSSQL2000/Std on
Windows 20003/Std. Rebooted everything after months of being fine and
getting a timeout error

The error message from the runtime log is

SQLException while attempting to connect: java.sql.SQLException:
[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]A problem occurred when attempting
to contact the server (Server returned: Connection reset). Please
ensure that the server parameters passed to the driver are correct and
that the server is running. Also ensure that the maximum number of
connections have not been exceeded for this server.
[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]A problem occurred when attempting
to contact the server (Server returned: Connection reset)

What's weird is this happens on three different VMWare machines
running on the same server as the db (this is in a dev environment). I
do know that the host machine, which also runs the db, was upgraded to
SP2 for Windows 2003 server. Other CF boxes (eg developer machines)
and MSSQL tools can connect fine, but not any of the virtual machines.

Ideas?

Seeking Programmer to Develop Social Networking Tools for our website

2007-09-12 Thread Betsy Burlingame
We run a website for expatriates and are looking to add social/
professional networking tools to our platform. We would like to add
Linked In style tools to enable members to create profiles, build
their networks, join public groups, publish their own blogs, publish
articles, post events/view calendar, find jobs/post jobs/network for
jobs, etc..

Although we do some developing ourselves, this project seems like too
much for us and we'd like to get help with some/all of it --
depending upon the cost.

Components:

1- Join/Create Profile (integrate registration with current forum
registration - same usernames/passwords)

2-Opt-In to Different Functionality - i.e. want to receive job offers
from employers/recruiters, want to meet other single expats, want to
use service to recruit people, etc...

3-Build Your Network: invite friends outside site, search for/invite
people from inside site, accept/decline others' invitations

4-Show Networking Opps: i.e. there are 10 other members in frankfurt,
germany - click here to view the list -- there are 3 other members
who also work for PG -- etc..

5-Member Matching Funtionality: match new expats/people preparing to
move abroad with seasoned expats (who have volunteered to mentor
newcomers), apply same to dating for single expats, possibly same to
help expats make friends abroad, etc..

6-Member Address Book

7-Member Content: blogs, articles, events, classifieds (possibly
premium)

8-Events Calendar: from events submitted by members that they said
should be publicly viewable - possibly member-specific events
calendar, too, for a member's network to view

9-Communicating: chat, IM/text, forums (we already have forums on
site that would be integrated somehow). But, would probably want to
enable members to have their own forums and/or groups to have their
own forums (still brainstorming)

Job Listings/Recruiting funcationality:

Group Functionality: enable people to build their own groups - both
public and private (possibly making private ones a premium) with
events, calendar, member list, etc..

Obviously, we're still figuring out some of the development work. If
you're interested in the project, please quote us for the numbered
sections -- 1 through 9. Thanks!

2007-09-12 Thread Bryan Stevenson
Just a thoughtdon't shoot the messenger ;-)

Being that most if not all of what you're asking for currently exists would it
perhaps be more efficient to use exisitng tools to setup groups for your
ex-pats
(i.e. setup a network on Linked In just for them) and they can use those
instead
of going through considerable expense to have custom programming done?

Of course you may be wanting to charge your members a big new fee for all the
shiny new features ;-)

Anywaysjust a thoughtseemed like re-inventing the wheel when it may
not
be neccessary

who also work for PG -- etc..

Thanks!
