Strange Errors in logs: Suspected Web Crawler

Morning everyone,

We've got a strange error which keeps appearing in our logs every day (usually 
2-3 but they're increasing) which looks like this:

13-Mar-2008  12:13   Error   0 
Element ROOT is undefined in APPLICATION. The specific sequence of files 
included or processed is: C:\..\display\disp_nopage.cfm, line: 23

This is coming from our global error-handling page. Note that the Application 
Name column is blank so it doesn't look like it's being assigned to one. If i 
try and access this page myself or force an error it appears fine and the 
debugger is showing that the page is assign to the main application.

As you can see from the address the file sits in a directory called display. 
There is no application.cfm file in this directory so I would expect it to drop 
to the next level and get the application details from there. This would be the 
root which is where the main application.cfm is sitting.

I'm suspecting that this might be a Web Crawler (Yahoo Slurp! appears a lot in 
the IIS logs) which is testing the error pages but what puzzles me is why there 
isn't an application being assigned to it. Does anybody have any ideas? Would 
something as simple as a

cfif not isDefined('application.applicationName')
 cfapplication name=myMainApplication
/cfif

. fix the problem?

I've got both shared accounts and dedicated servers with
www.crystaltech.com. They're very affordable and there technical support is
second to none, they come highly recommended, I know quite a few other cf
developers use them and I've never heard anything but positive feedback
about them. They will also fit your $200 a year budget.

Take a look at the site and see if it takes your fancy.

If you are using = SQL 2000 you could use the following function called 
dbo.split().

If you are able to add that as a SQL UDF in your database then you could 
reference your form values as this 

select * from dbo.Split('#form.formfieldName#',',')

after posting. This will return a table that you can join on or select from and 
even alias. 

I would recommend using an inner join with this as a table for efficiency with 
lots of values.

Load|Performance problems?  Maybe once a load threshold is reached the

HostMySite is one of those companies, while not perfect or supernatural by
any means, does an admirable job, one that should be emulated.  I put them
in a class with Starbucks, Toyota and Wegman's grocery stores...truely a
class act. 

They are more expensive than most other hosting companies, but I can't
imagine switching.

Thanks Adam - that was a great response you had as well.  Due to the way our 
internal systems are setup I couldn't access any of my HMS applications during 
the outage (apparently they're based in DC2) but I could get the internet, so I 
immediately checked these forums for the inevitable HMS is down thread.

We have a 100% uptime guarantee, and take it very seriously on those rare 
instances where we have a network or hardware outage.  In an N+1 environment 
this should never happen, and we work very hard to make sure that it doesn't.

bucks a month... I would be afraid of paying so little What is their
incentive to help when things  go wrong? 

I'm all in favor of low prices but sometimes I think it would be better if
there were not so many commodity hosts willing to give away the farm for
what has to be the thinnest of profit margins. My dad used to tell the story
of a bar owner who bought beer for 50 cents a bottle and sold it for 45
cents a bottle. When they asked him how he made any money he said I make it
up in volume.

extensively reviewing the performance of CF on linux servers we determined they 
were unsustainable due to the fact that we can't use SeeFusion on Linux.  This 
may change in the future as CF gets better at memory management, but for the 
moment that's simply not the case.

I'm very sorry, but if you can't do something right you shouldn't do it at all, 
and we'd rather have linux cf users on a VPS or at another host than see them 
get bad service.

Really, SeeFusion doesn't run on linux?  I would expect that it would,
seeing as how it's just java.. 

What about FusionReactor?  Its much better IMHO.  I believe the licensing
costs are fairer as well if you do multiple instances. 

BTW, Jaimie, are you sure your router was at fault for the outage?  I had
heard there was some backbone trouble during the outage...

In a recent project I used the new server monitor on a Linux CF8 ent
server... There were some things from SeeFusion has that I missed - but over
all the server monitor provided some excellent tools and was an acceptable
replacement. 

One item that was particularly useful was the alert set up to dump a
snapshot. I was able to put in a threshold of running requests and then
when that threshold was reached the monitor generated a snapshot that
included memory counters, sessions, requests and the stack trace. With a
handler CFC you could get a standard config together that gave you warning
well in advance of a hangup on a busy server - very cool.

So... With CF8 you might be able to overcome that hurdle. In addition, you
can get another gig out of the heap size for the 32 bit JVM.

variables.  My question is whether it helps to use cfqueryparam for
constants in a query.

Sonny,

These constants are not constants to the SQL server. To the SQL server
these are still unbound variables... So yes, you need to use cfqueryparam if
you want to hit the cache pool and execution plan cache. Otherewise the
driver hands off the prepare operation to the SQL server - meaning no
cache hit is possible.  As a point of interest ... Why would you ask this
question? Why not just use cfqueryparam as a matter of standard practice for
all input variables?

Integrating Axis2 into CF8?

Has anyone tried to upgrade the old Axis version CF8 ships with to Axis2?
At the moment I am developing a POJO web service which runs on JRun/CF8. It 
works alright but I have ran into some problems with complex data types and 
inheritance.
I have implemented exactly the same web service in Weblogic 9.2 with no 
problems.
I haven't been able to pinpoint the problem but I think it might be the old 
axis library, so this got me thinking about putting Axis2 into CF8.

Could anyone give me any pointer on how to go about this?

Virtual Machine Error?

Here is the scenario - I have an existing ColdFusion 8 multi-server install
on my development workstation.  I have a project for which I need to run
ColdFusion 7, so I have installed the Java 1.4.2 SDK and then deployed
ColdFusion 7 and a EAR to my existing ColdFusion 8 JRun server as a new
instance.  I manually created the NT service, setting the path to a
different JVM config file that has the java.home path pointing to the 1.4.2
SDK.

 

However, when I attempt to start the instance, it fails and all this is in
the log file is the message Error occurred during initialization of VM.  I
am not a JVM expert by any means, so can anybody offer some pointers as to
what might be going on here?

You make a good point - this was done pre-CF8, so there's definitely room to 
re-evaluate.  I'll mention it to infrastructure and see if there's any good 
reason for this.  I don't know the technical details behind SeeFusion's 
incompatibility with Linux, unfortunately, just that it exists.

Regarding the outage, I am 100% positive it was a router/switch issue and not 
an issue with the backbone.

I have recently started using cfqueryparam, I learned the bad habit of not
using them during my first CF job.  I had the suspicion that things worked
as you've elaborated, but I wanted to confirm.  The doubts in my mind came
about because I've done some PL/SQL programming and I've only seen bind
variables used when the value is actually variable.

traffic monitor which also showed the headers, requests, and responses from 
HTTP request that my apps make.

Does anyone know of one they'd recommend? Free would be best, but I'd entertain 
a priced one if it was good quality.

I have a small cfwindow in my app.  Currently this window displays
a) bla bla...
b) blaB blaB...
c) blaC blaC...

What is more desirable presentation-wise (for clarity, non cluttered overall 
presentation) would be:
Display a) only and upon mouse over to this window, display b) and c) as well.

Background info:
1) all elements including a), b) and c) come from a db dynamically as one row;
2) they(a,b and c) are wrapped inside a usual HTML table.

Do you have some idea?  Thanks.

is quite fast, but i never had to ask them more than a CFmapping to be done

downtime? don't know, but my customers have never found their website down

small business = small budget = small website = less demands

i have 3 of my customers hosted there, and none of them had to complain,
until now...

Query Access DB, then display results randomly?

I need to query an Access Database for a few records (10 to 15) that meet a 
criteria, then display the results randomly. There's many ways to query 
randomly, but once I have my 10 records, I need a way to display them randomly. 

I've got a few ugly ideas about having a number of queries each with a 
different ORDER BY, then randomly running one query.

Is there a nifty way to do this at the output?? I can't think of anything.

to rich text format or HTML for better display on the feds monitors  
while they scour the internet spying on innocent citizens...

Hey Dave...

Do you know offhand if Fiddler can view AMF requests like the Flash Debugger
can? Right now I'm using the Flash Debugger to view requests for Flash
stuff, and other tools for viewing standard requests. It would be awesome if
Fiddler could do both.  

To be clear I want to see the data coming back from the request, and not
just the response headers.

just thinking out loud here.

since the resultset is so low, the overhead here would be minimal.

You could have a function that takes the number in the resultset and  
then returns a randomly generated list of those numbers.  Loop  
through that list at presentation using the number as the queryrow.

function randomNumbers('1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10')
pull a random location for the list, append the number from that list  
location to the list to be returned.  Keep doing this until you have  
all the numbers accounted for.

display.
Loop list item=x
#queryname].column[x]#

That did it.  Wasn't even thinking about that.  I had it selected not to
save encrypted files to disk and the file I was downloading was encrypted.

Does Access have a random number generator function?
You could do something like this

select fooCol1, fooCol2, fooCol3, randrange(1,10) as rnd_col
from fooTbl
where a = this
and b = that
order by rnd_col


something like that would work smooth... every time the page is
refreshed the order would change

I don't want you to think that my intention is to reduce the  
situation that you have over there.

I do want to complain some more though

The gov gets it for free, the companies are 'required' to comply and  
if they challenge are put through the ringer.

A Cracker (hacker with bad intentions) only dreams of being able to  
do with your information, what the gov can do.  Freeze all of your  
assets, redirect all future paychecks to them, sick the IRS on you,  
etc etc.

Not that I have an opinion...

Alongside external tools, I actually include an output pane that debugs my
responses so that I can see exactly what Flex reads. It's a simple solution
that could be expanded upon, but it gets the job done.

Just Googled this..

Int((100 * Rnd) + 1)

Will give a random number between 1 and 100.

So using the above technique..

select fooCol1, fooCol2, fooCol3, Int((100 * Rnd) + 1) as rnd_col
from fooTbl
where a = this
and b = that
order by rnd_col

Should work.. and should be very quick

   -Below this, I have six cases each with a simple query that has a different 
ORDER BY

they were both included in my page before to upload a single file and worked 
but now it is needed to upload multiple files so i was tryig to give that

the intent is to display the first query result in full.  When the  
table area is moused over, then display all of the other results.   
Once you mouseout of the table area, only the first result should be  
showing.

Yes, it would. More specifically with the Access drivers used by CF. 

I have not tried the code you posted. But I seem to recall a function used to 
retrieve random records in Access that stopped working around MX6. Possibly it 
was not supported by the driver. I am not sure.

I do not think you need the evaluate, but if you name the file field 
sequentially like this

Then you can access them simply using array notation

I actually tried that one. Downloaded it like 3 or 4 times from 2 or 3
different mirrors and all of the install files reported that they were
corrupt. So I never even got it running.

Do you know offhand if Fiddler can view AMF requests like the Flash Debugger
can? Right now I'm using the Flash Debugger to view requests for Flash
stuff, and other tools for viewing standard requests. It would be awesome if
Fiddler could do both.  

To be clear I want to see the data coming back from the request, and not

Sorry, William, your interpretation wasn't in 'snyc' with me.  The intent was,
extract each paragraph from ONE/SAME row, 
hence, show/display the First Paragraph by default, then use OnMouseOver, 
OnMouseOut event handlers to show the rest paragraph and all the rest.

There might be p tag within the text and there might not be.  I appreciate 
your effort but it may not be worth the time and may slow down the loading 
quite a bit...
So, I'll probably think up something else.

Truly appreciate it.

I can think of several different ways to accomplish what you are  
looking for, but each one of them would add a little bit of  
processing to the CF side of things, as well as the javascript code  
(which shouldn't slow the download at all).  How slow is your page to  
load already?

Ok, here's the background: The shared Linux CF plans we had were the lowest 
selling of our hosting plans, plus they were highest in terms of support load, 
i.e. clients with those plans created more tickets than any other plan type.  
As mentioned earlier SeeFusion isn't as effective on Linux as it is on Windows 
due to the inability to kill threads, which is 100% necessary.  Having a system 
that simply informs us of upcoming problems isn't enough, we needed some sort 
of automated server healing to take place in order to make sure our techs 
weren't tied up fixing Linux CF servers all day.

Since we had already devoted a great deal of resources to SeeFusion using 
another CF tool like FusionReactor wasn't ideal because it would introduce 
another level of complexity to our server environment (another tool for techs 
to configure and learn) plus another vendor/licensing agreement to be worked 
out.  Switching over completely to FusionReactor was similarly dismissed 
because of the poor return involved - too few clients would really benefit and 
the costs and disadvantages were too great to justify them, plus our initial 
trials made us lean towards SeeFusion as a better product to use.

Even from the clients that absolutely needed CF + Linux, we still had Linux CF 
VPS plans to offer, and the majority of the clients that we migrated 
appreciated the fact that stability is MUCH better in that environment anyway.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.  It's unfortunate that we can't offer 
shared CF Linux for our clients, but we think the decision benefitted our 
customer service and support tremendously.

Determining a user's location by IP address is not an exact science :)

with that in mind, google terms like geo ip.

http://www.maxmind.com/app/ip-location is a product that i've used in
the past.

maniac...)

Any accumulated bug reports for cold fusion 8?

Most recently I caught another cf8 bug, corrupt table, a quick search 
revealed that it's related to cfqueryparam/cache and an updater seems to have 
fixed it.

But the question, is what else cf8 bugs out there?  Would prefer to prevent 
them rather than having them showing up on user's screen.

Would the most recent accumulative updater fix most of them or meantime it may 
cause some unexpected problem?
