facebook-like interactive avatar trimmer
I would like to create an avatar-trimming feature like that found on Facebook and Flickr, which allows the end user to select an area of their uploaded image (constrained to a square) to be their avatar. I figure it's using JavaScript to select the top and bottom x,y co-ordinates that define the box, and passing those numbers to the image processing functions to crop the image (I'm using CF8 for this one). The server-side part sounds straightforward, but the client-side part sounds tricky. I'm guessing/hoping that as this is something that has been done before, there might be an example somewhere, or something :) My attempts to google the answer have been largely unsuccessful cos I don't really know what words to use - avatar +trim +javascript gets me all sorts of things including questions about trimming nose and pubic hair. h. Any pointers greatly appreciated! Thanks for your help and suggestions Dave, I had to go a different direction though to get this process working. However, in this feed (http://sphumd.blogspot.com/rss.xml) there may be more than one category and in the database it makes, I only see one channel. I'm having a bear of a time figuring out how to adjust the feedToQuery file to have it see the other 'category' listing. I need it to see all of them that are there. Re: ColdFusion Consultant as a Java Consultant?
I just want to clarify some things here. JEE spec (JEE technologies) is something that is defined. These are technologiest that are voted on and documented by Sun (and memebers of the community). Some of this is supported by the Java Runtime itself (language constructs like Annotations, generics, Enums) others are supported by libraries. Sun releases reference implementations of most specs but others can, and do, as well. Java technologies include things like JSF, JSP, JPA and EJB. All of these have JSR[s] attached to them. On the other hand Spring, Struts, Tapestry are just Java frameworks. Hibernate is a little different b/c JPA was mostly based off hibernate and hibernate has a third party implementation of the JPA spec. For a list of Java technologies check out: http://java.sun.com/javaee/technologies/ This is all way off in left field at this point though lol. It is important to keep the Throw set to No. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what to do to break this vicious circle of locking without any manual intevention? I think you might be incorrect in your assumptions here... throwOnTimeout (as I understand it) only comes into play if the timeout was reached. And the timeout can only be reached if the lock was NOT OBTAINED during the wait period. A timeout occurs (meaning I was unable to obtain a lock) and then, based on this setting, a decision is made to throw an error or continue as if nothing happened. In my experience it's very rare that you'd ever want to use throwOnTimeout=no, but there are cases. If a deadlock has occurred it means that the timeout value was not met - the lock was granted. So both these attributes become meaningless once you're inside the lock. Deadlocks are caused when two processes require the same resources to continue but each process already has a hold on one of them. The classic example is two people that want to put on the same pair of pants: person A puts on the right leg and person B puts on the left leg and now their deadlocked. Both need the other's resource to continue and neither can finish until they get it. You need to focus on what resources are being tied and figure out how to extricate them. The code above is actually an improved snippet than my earlier version because I had previously included a select query and an insert query inside the same bounding CFLOCK by the way. Very generally the more code that's in a lock, the safer that code is from deadlocks (after all, if all code were serialized then there could be no deadlocks) and the less code that's in a lock the more dangerous it is (the more likely two threads will deadlock). There are definitely a few generalities to look at with problems like this: +) A common problem is that the same resource is locked using different lock names or there are calls to the resource that are not locked at all. In this case two locks are fighting it out because both have a hold on the same resource. Do a catalog of all the locks in your app: do all locks for the same resource share the same name? Do the same for all accesses to the resource - are any not locked? +) Remember that CF can only lock code it's running. A database could have other applications (other CF apps, other application engines, etc), servers or admin tools requesting access that could affect CF as well. In other words try to remember that you're locking the code NOT the resource. (This is much more important when using direct Database lock however.) +) Beware (and understand) of Exclusive vrs ReadOnly locks. It's a common issue that some people face that they overuse exclusive locks or that they misunderstand read-only locks. For example in your code you might want to put that database read inside a readOnly lock. That lock should have the SAME NAME as the exclusive lock. This says I can read this database only if nobody has an exclusive lock and seems to be exactly what you want (but defiantly DO NOT nest the locks). Maybe I could use an server monitor software to analyse a test CF page which tries to run a lock with the same name and then runs some sort of action to restart on it's own as a last resort? You might - but the problem, obtuse as it may be, should be completely addressable in code. But you really have to pick things apart from the point of view of who is doing something with my resource and what access do they need? Re: CFLock deadlocking
Thanks for the replys. It is useful as is this page: http://livedocs.adobe.com/coldfusion/7/htmldocs/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=ColdFusion_Documentationfile=1169.htm I now don't believe I had a deadlock issue. So according to Adobe and others when throwontimeout is NO, if the timeout is reached, processing continues after /cflock instead of pulling up errors and this would account for the lack of data stored in the database. I read this on Adobe.com: *never use the throwOnTimeout attribute for CFMLthat must run.* I would rather use cftryhttp://livedocs.adobe.com/coldfusion/7/htmldocs/0349.htm#1104557and cfcatchhttp://livedocs.adobe.com/coldfusion/7/htmldocs/0225.htm#3395038and stop the lock from essentially being by-passed in the first place as it's vital for that process to be ran. I am unsure exactly why the timeout was reached in the first place, but as I have simplified the lock (no use of querys inside the lock) I think that this would speed things up quite a lot. Even though I can't copy all my code in here, I can confirm that other locks above my problem area had ran and inserted stuff correctly to DBs even when my problem code had not and this code was a very simple snippet of code indeed so I guess it ran fast and did not timeout. Adobe suggest to use the minimum amount of code as possible in locks. Re: Parse .html files with Coldfusion
I was thinking previously that there might be a way to do something similar to this with Apache. After all, if Apache just served the HTML file directly to the user instead of handing it off to CF, then there would be no parsing of any html files outside of a particular domain. CF would never see those html files because Apache would never pass them off to CF for processing. However, it sounds like in your experience, adding the AddHandler line JUST to a particular VirtualHost did not limit that Apache configuration to just one VirtualHost, but rather the entire server? 1. Added the following to the specific domain's vhost.conf file: Directory /home/httpd/vhosts/mydomain.com/httpdocs AddHandler jrun-handler .jsp .jws .cfm .cfml .cfc .cfr .cfswf .htm .html /Directory Can you confirm that you added the AddHandler line to JUST the VirtualHost that you wanted to have the html files interpreted? What if you remove the Directory tags from around it and simply had the line directly in the VirtualHost directive? I've never attempted to do anything like that personally, but it seems logical. CF8 setdomaincookies not working right?
Hi Folks We are testing CF8 and discovered that the cfapplication option setdomaincookies doesn't appear to work with host names like www.xyz.com, but does work with www.extra.xyz.com. For www.xyz.com, it sends back headers like this: Set-Cookie: CFID=8500;expires=Sat, 25-Sep-2038 19:52:17 GMT;path=/ Set-Cookie: CFTOKEN=74322795;expires=Sat, 25-Sep-2038 19:52:17 GMT;path=/ But for www.extra.xyz.com, the headers are correct, like this: Set-Cookie: CFID=8501;domain=.extra.xyz.com;expires=Sat, 25-Sep-2038 19:52:27 GMT;path=/ Set-Cookie: CFTOKEN=18794412;domain=.extra.xyz.com;expires=Sat, 25-Sep-2038 19:52:27 GMT;path=/ (In order to test I added both host names to my C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file.) This problem is causing problems with session variables since each host (abc.xyz.com, def.xyz.com) is getting a unique set of cf cookies. It looks to me like CF8 is counting the number of periods in the host name wrong, which seems unlikely, but there it is. We are running CF8 Standard, version 8,0,1,195765. Our test page looks like this: CFAPPLICATION NAME=TestApp CLIENTMANAGEMENT=No SESSIONMANAGEMENT=true SETCLIENTCOOKIES=true SETDOMAINCOOKIES=true cfdump var=#session# Can anybody else reproduce this problem with CF8? HTTP401.2 - Access denied by ACL on resource
Unfortunately I have to maintain a couple of archaic ColdFusion 4.5 servers for the next couple of years. Luckily all our new development is going on bright and shiny new ColdFusion 8 Enterprise servers. But it will be quite some time before many older programs are migrated. That being said. I got tired of searching the internet every time I need to check if something I wanted to do was available on version 4.5. Thus, I went out and got a copy of the 4.5 documentation from the Adobe nee Macromedia nee Allaire archives. I can access this content from my local hard drive. But since it is expected to be running on a web site the formatting and linking is just a bit off. This is just annoying enough that I figured I'd drop it into my development web server. This is where this error comes in. Whenever I try to access the ColdFusion 4.5 documentation through a browser with my http://localhost/cfdocs/ url, I get this 401.3 Access denied error. My attempts at Googling information on this issue has not turned up anything that seems to apply to my situation. I have no strange or missing file permissions as best as I can tell. The website in my IIS management console is configured with anonymous access. Can anybody point me to something useful. Is it just not possible to run the 4.5 cfdocs 'web app' on a developer CF 8/IIS 5.1/Windows XP configuration. Re: i'll pay through paypal anyone who can debug my code
Phillip, Phillip here. :) May I suggest another tact? While I know of people who would take the offer, I urge you to study cflivedocs and learn more about CF. For example. cfif IsDefined(cookie.LoggedIn) Welcome, your logged in as cfoutput#cookie.username# ID: #cookie.ID#/cfoutput /cfif cfif Not IsDefined(cookie.LoggedIn) Welcome, your logged in as cfoutput#session.Auth.username# ID #session.Auth.ID#/cfoutput /cfif This can be rewrittened as Welcome, your logged in as cfoutput cfif IsDefined(cookie.LoggedIn) #cookie.username# ID: #cookie.ID# cfelse #session.Auth.username# ID: #session.Auth.ID# /cfif /cfoutput This is much more reasonable to read code and if you simplify your code, the answer may come to you. Also, you seem focused on making 3 cookies for this application (Username, ID number and Confirmed). Why not just make one? This will make it more secure (since once you have the UserID, you can do a search for username and if they want to remember their cookies (which I don't even ask most of the time. If they don't want cookies, then let them turn it off on their side)). Anyway, I hope this helps. You have a real learning chance here. It may be better if you just start from scratch and rewrite the login part of the code giving you issues after you read up more on ColdFusion. Re: i'll pay through paypal anyone who can debug my code
The problem is in script language=javascriptlocation.replace('index.cfm');/script Just delete that line and everything should work.. When cookies are involved, some browsers have problems with redirects. If it works, donate the $50 to: virtualtrials.com/donate my favorite charity:) At 05:13 PM 10/2/2008, Phillip Perry wrote: Hi, I have been over this cookie code for over a week and I can't get it straight, even with the help of people who I feel (and know) are experts. Re: i'll pay through paypal anyone who can debug my code
cfif IsDefined(cookie.Confirmed) EQ Yes should probably be rewrittened to cfif IsDefined(cookie.Confirmed) But I don't know if that would break things expecting it to be set to Yes. True or 1 perhaps... But Yes? I don't suspect that would work. FWIW this should work, CF (oddly) returns Yes or No for boolean comparisons. Of course, as you say, you don't really need the EQ Yes there in the first place. cfoutput#1 is 1#/cfoutput Returns: YES -- Josh ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;207172674;29440083;f Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:313416 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4
Re: Parse .html files with Coldfusion
Can you confirm that you added the AddHandler line to JUST the VirtualHost that you wanted to have the html files interpreted? What if you remove the Directory tags from around it and simply had the line directly in the VirtualHost directive? I did only add the AddHandler to the vhost.conf file for only the 1 domain. It actually didn't matter if I added this. As soon as I made the edits to the web.xml file outlined above, CF started processing .html, .htm files for all domains. Editing the web.xml file is all I did, so unless there is a way to do an IF statement in the web.xml file, I can't imagine how to get around it running on all domains. ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;207172674;29440083;f Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:313417 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4
