yes, mapserver would be my first choice for a free "host your own" web-based
spatial data server. it has many options that allows you to be pretty flexible
in how you build out your front-ends ("simple", WMS, tiled, etc.). it's
community is pretty active & by & large friendly. there's even a pretty good
mapserver CFC around (though based on a fairly old version of mapserver).

my 2nd choice (but not that far behind mapserver) would be geoserver:

http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/Welcome

being java based it has some interesting hooks for cf developers. has web-based
management, an active community, excellent docs & seems to improve pretty
regularly. if you do go this route, you should also have a look at geowebcache:
http://geowebcache.org/

if you can get your spatial data into KML, google maps, especially now that it
has a flex API, would be a nice choice as well. having somebody else manage the
data, etc. is usually not a bad idea.

if you can meet their license restrictions:

http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisonline/about/start.htm#map_types.htm#

you also might consider ESRI's arcGIS online:

http://resources.esri.com/arcgisonlineservices/

their flex API is pretty nifty & after all ESRI's the granddaddy of GIS. but be
aware that ESRI tends to ping-pong about w/their "free" services. a good
resource for the flex API is

Another vote for KickAss. I have one client running Railo on their Windows VPS
and haven't had any problems since setting it up about 6 months ago. I've had a
few other customers use them as well, and haven't heard anything but good

Re: Railo Hosting or a very basic VPS to install it on

2009-01-20 Thread Gerald Guido
IMHO kickassvps.com offers the best bang for the buck I have seen to date in
that price range (however cloud hosting is starting to look very
attractive).

Hosting is a lot like the old adage for pricing projects. Your options:
Fast, Good or Cheap. Pick two.

EX: If the service is inexpensive and you get a lot of features, customer
service and support sucks, etc. With kickassvps.com I somehow got lots of
features, great service and a great price. They have a free external fire
wall which is a godsend. BTW, Virtuozzo totally rocks. You can totally hose
your box (not recommended) and restore it from back up in a couple of
minutes. Free daily backups to boot. I split it with a buddy so we have a
server for $17.50/mo each.

I have also heard very good things about viviotech. From what I have seen,
my impression is that Jordan is a real stand up guy.

Depends on how your source data is organized. For instance, if your
source data is stored in a compatible geometric datatype column in a
database it should be pretty easy to extract polygons from that.
Polygons are easy to draw on top of the Google Maps API.

Re: SOT: Serving GIS data on the cheap.

2009-01-20 Thread Rob Parkhill
Ian
Manifold comes with a 'web server' or at least a version of the program that
will serve up maps from a specified directory. You have to put Manifold
onto a computer and then set it up with your map data. As I read it, it
seems relatively straight forward (although I am sure that there are some
gotchas in there).

We have not yet implemented this solution. (we are in rural Ontario - high
speed is, well not reliable) We were basically going to take one of our old
workstations and have it serve the maps and the website. It seemed like a
good solution, except for the un-reliableness of our access, so the site
would be down when our internet was. From reading the docs (we have a
variety of GIS systems here) it seems as though you can just serve up you
shape files, but converting them to the Manifold format made it faster?

Anyways, it was a while ago that we looked at it, but it seemed like the
best solution to us at the time.

Ping me off list if you would like anything else.

Thanks for the link, I'm reading now and the first thing I do see is a
price tag much more in line with our shoe string budget.

Do you know off the top of your head if this is just an GIS editor of
somekind or does it support exporting GIS data for web consumption
either with existing map API's and user interfaces or it own? I.E. If
it has a web deliverable feature does this require custom software on
the server?

I am not sure what format exactly our GIS is in. I know our
cartographer uses some level of ESRI's desktop GIS tools. I am trying
to get more specifics from him.

At the least we would like to have something like a Google Map (but we
are open to any option at this time) user interface where users can
navigate and zoom around our data that covers something like 2 million
square miles.. Overlaying it with another source so that data exists
outside the borders of our data would be a nice bonus, but apparently
complicates issues tremendously.

In what format do you have your GIS data? What do you want to do with
it, just make it into pictures or overlay it on somebody elses
(Google, Yahoo etc.) dataset?

configure CF8 to use iPlanet instead of the internal web server

2009-01-20 Thread DZIOBEK, JOSEPH (JOE), ATTSI
Hi,
I noticed this ColdFusion Community page and would like to give it a
try:

I am trying to configure our CF8 to use iPlanet instead of the internal
web server, and there is one line to be executed, I can't find the
definition anywhere:

wsconfig -server coldfusion -ws iplanet -dir path_to_config -coldfusion
-v

I am not sure what exactly the 'path_to_config' variable is,

I think it will be one of 3:

1) /usr/iplanet/server6.1sp6

Then specific configuration for the application to use CF is:
2) /usr/iplanet/server6.1sp6/https-our_application

Or
3) /usr/iplanet/server6.1sp6/https-our_application/config (which is a
directory)..

Any feedback is welcome - thanks.

Anybody out there work with serving GIS data on a website.

We have our own, custom GIS data and we would like to serve it on our
website. I have looked an using the Google Map API and it can serve up
custom data, if you can get it 'tiled'. But I am finding that it can be
very challenging to get data out of a GIS editor and into Google Map API
or another other without software that costs 10's of thousands of
dollars or more.

ColdFusion does not run as you, it does not have your permissions. You
have to configure it as a user that does have the desired permissions.

RE: How long to get new posts picked up by CFBloggers.org?

2009-01-20 Thread Andy Matthews
V1 is the current site:

www.andymatthews.net

It's modeled on code from my family blog:

www.andyandjaime.com

Which in turn is code that I've been tweaking for about 5 years now. I've
been planning on rewriting the whole thing to use best practices, more
efficient memory use, more use of JavaScript (and jQuery), and more.

When I started building www.andymatthews.net I wanted to do a one for one
with my family blog so that it would be as comparable as possible. That way
I can base my progress off how much has changed between the two.

I'm sure you can design scenario's where that will be faster (mainly
where you are approaching the maximum number of prepared statements
cached), but in general it will be slower for two reasons:

1. More work at runtime. Prepared statements reduce the amount of work
in the time-critical query execution path by caching the query
execution plan. When executed the database only has to fill out the
parameters and execute the statement and doesn't have to parse and
optimize the query. Filling out fewer variables is faster, both on the
database side and on the CF side. (The CF side might actually be the
dominant factor here.)

2. Less optimized execution plans. If you provide the value at compile
time the optimizer has more information on how to optimize the query.
This is especially relevant for queries where the optimal execution
plan is dependent on the values of the variables. Examples of such
queries are queries with a very skewed value distribution in a join /
filter column or queries with inequality operators. For instance, if
you have the predicate WHERE column < for some values
you will be selecting almost every row and want a heap scan, while for
other values you will only select very few rows and want an index
scan.

Yes I am. My current blog is running on v1. It's mostly spaghetti code, not
well formed, etc. Part of my goal is to document the rewriting process and
blog about it WHILE I'm in the middle of the conversion. I started off as a
designer so I've got a lot of good ideas on how to improve the interface and
functionality.

Betreff: Railo Hosting or a very basic VPS to install it on

I'm looking to reduce costs by getting a basic VPS package and installing
Railo, Apache, Tomcat/Resin and SQL Server 2008 Express.

I've been with Crystaltech and HostMySite for a while now, I love the whole
VPS approach but the cost is a bit much for some projects so I thought I'd
give the above techs a go.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Adrian

Re: How long to get new posts picked up by CFBloggers.org?

2009-01-20 Thread Raymond Camden
Pinging is done via a set of URLs, with a few shortcuts. If you put
@technorati as a url, it will ping technorati. Ditto for @weblogs and
@icerocket. I built those in as I thought (back then) that they were
common ones folks would want, AND they have special requirements. Any
other URL is simply done with CFHTTP.

One kinda cool trick is that in CF8, blockcfc will automatically do
all of this via cfthread to make the ping quicker.

Re: Railo Hosting or a very basic VPS to install it on

2009-01-20 Thread adrian lynch
The lack of RAM really.

I was hoping I'd pay less by dropping ColdFusion and get more RAM at the same
time.

I like HMS, their tech support has been awesome although I would have liked
never to have had the need to talk to them, but when I do they're always there
and very helpful.

I wanted to take a look somewhere else though.

1 or 2GB of RAM would be nice as SQL Server will want a bunch of that.

I'm also hoping there are some stripped down packages, so no SmarterTools etc.

Will look at Kickass, I recall someone slating them a while ago but don't quote
me on that.

BTW, I'm not receiving any CF-Talk emails, this is via the site. Anyone else
not getting anything through? I can sent ok mind.

Ray...

As a curiousity, in BlogCFC, how do you manage pinging? What I mean is do
you have to ping every aggregator? Is CFBloggers built in? What about Full
as a Goog? Feedburner, etc? I mistakenly assumed that if my blog was grouped
in CFBloggers that new posts would automatically get picked up.

Care to share your approach?

Re: How long to get new posts picked up by CFBloggers.org?

2009-01-20 Thread Raymond Camden
Didn't take it that way at all. :) I just worry as I occasionally see
posts here about my sites/products, and since I'm not on the list
every day, I want to make sure folks know they can contact me.

As it stands, my code is 100% perfect and bug free, so it's not like I
have anything to worry about it anyway.

(Ahem)

RE: New Project: shrinkURL - API wrapper for URL shortening services

2009-01-20 Thread Andy Matthews
Actually, it got approved sooner than I was expecting, sometime either early
this morning, or late last night. I wasn't expecting it until around work
start time and I would have been waiting with the zip file.

You're just too fast for me Ray.

RE: How long to get new posts picked up by CFBloggers.org?

2009-01-20 Thread Andy Matthews
So moving forward, should I be pinging CFBloggers after each blog post? I'm
in the process of writing my own blog software so it's not built in like it
might be with BlogCFC.

I believe there is a 30 minute scheduler running that goes through all the
feeds, though it could be a bit longer. You could also ping cfbloggers

in my case:

That will naturally force an immediate update of your site.

Hey Ray...

My email was no criticism of you, or your site (just so you know). I just
didn't want to bother you with something that was most likely my fault.
Trying to take care of it on my own before having to come to you about a
small thing.

Thanks for your input everyone.

Gary had the best idea, well, the second best idea. You do know you can
contact me via the site, right? Or email me at r...@camdenfamily.com. I don't
mind direct emails and it is probably best as I don't monitor cf-talk

Just wanted to take a minute to announce a new project I worked on over the
weekend. It's a small library which wraps the API functionality of multiple
URL shorteners into one codebase. One method to call, returns a string,
couldn't be easier.

I'd love to get some feedback from any of you on it. It's currently CF8
only, but that's only because I took the easy way out and used implicit
struct creation in several locations. It'd be a snap to change that if
anyone wants support for pre CF8.

Yes, I think that qualifies as a bug and I'll report it. If I were
also theoretically on a beta for CF9 I'd be hypothetically testing it
there too and reporting it if it still happens. Perhaps people who are
in that beta can check.

I personally chose to use Snurl.com for their tracking just for that reason.
The primary reason this project started was because I want to autopost a short
url to twitter anytime I add a new blog post to my site (around 3 times a week
atm). So, rather than keep something like to myself, I decided to expand and
release it to the public.

Now that you mention it, when I'm posting links to my projects on public forums
such as these, I should use my actual website so as to get search engine buy
in. Oh well, I'll learn for next time.
