Re: coldfusion service stop rsponding or CPU goes up tp 100%

2011-03-22 Thread Carl Meyer

The NewGen size is too small.

On my dev environment (CF9.0.1 JVM 1.6.0_24) I ran these JVM args:
java.args=-server  -Xms4096m  -Xmx4096m -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -
XX:MaxPermSize=192m -XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:NewSize=48m - XX:SurvivorRatio=4 etc
CF became unresponsive without much load, tho I did not see the CPU bound.

I increased the NewGen JVM arg: -XX:NewSize=148m
Now CF kept on responding.

Three JVM things to note:
-the PermGen is fair to say small perhaps you do well to increase those values
eg -XX:PermSize=148m -XX:MaxPermSize=296m
-have seen CF on 64 bit fail to respond when -XBatch is not in the JVM args
-when using low pause XincGC you would do well to have a NewGen collector eg
-XX:+UseParNewGC

HTH, Carl.

Tom,

You are asking the chicken and egg question - and without poring over your
logs it would be hard to say. But a connection issue to a DB (for example)
can cause exactly this sort of behavior - a cpu constrainted server as it
tries to resolve hanging threads. The 3am time frame makes me think
something else is going on ... but you will need to investigate investigate
investigate till you come up with some scenarios that make sense to you.

Looks like a connection issue with some resource - database, web service,
cfhttp call... something that is making a connection is casing the problem.
Take a look in the files referenced and see what you are hitting.

Perhaps you need a cert installed into the keystore of your new JDK.

You could always create a Gmail account for mailing lists and, if you
wanted it to come to your desktop, just configure the extra account in
your mail client. The mail interface to HoF is certainly a lot more
palatable than the web interface so I suspect the vast majority of

Re: coldfusion service stop rsponding or CPU goes up tp 100%

2011-03-22 Thread Wil Genovese

I had to research it myself. -Xincgc is an Incremental Garbage Collector. If
you have a multi CPU server there are better GC options.
--- info I found from 2003 --
-Xincgc
The incremental garbage collector, which is off by default, will eliminate
occasional garbage-collection pauses during program execution. However, it can
lead to a roughly 10% decrease in overall GC performance.

On multi-CPU/Core server I usually use parallel GC. It's setup like this. The
interval values calculate out to 10 minutes. You will need to adjust this to
suite the server and application needs.

-XX:+UseParallelGC -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=60
-Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=60

If you need to know more detail about what the GC is doing then enable GC
verbose output and logging. That is done by adding these arguments to the JVM
line. -Xloggc takes a full path to a log file.

-XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintHeapAtGC -verbose:gc
-Xloggc:GarbageCollection.log
This page is archived at Sun and is a good resource to help understand the GC
log output.
http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/gc1.4.2/example.html

I have a guide to JVM tuning at my blog - It's a guide as in general road map,
the values specified worked on my servers and may or may work on yours. But it
will give you an idea of what and where to look.
http://www.trunkful.com/index.cfm/2008/11/25/How-to-Tune-the-JVM-Part-2

As for the reason the service stops at 3am? Not sure, does it always do this at
the same time? If so look for a scheduled task somewhere. Look in the web
server logs. There could be something outside hitting the site (think bot) hard
the same time everyday.

Hope some of this helps,

Failed SSL Connection

2011-03-22 Thread David Patricola

Thank you everyone for your help so far. I'm at the cusp of completion and now
the final test remains. I am testing my CF8 Enterprise datasource client
connection to a Redhat 5 Postgresql server, and so far is failing:

Someone else created the certificates for me on the Redhat box and sent me
them, so I am trusting that they are correct (they followed this instruction:
http://developer.postgresql.org/pgdocs/postgres/ssl-tcp.html)

For the record, I connect to the database without SSL fine, so I know the
firewall and pg_hba.conf file is kosher.

=
JDBC URL: jdbc:postgresql://x.x.x.x/main?ssl=true
Class: org.postgresql.Driver

I've done the following steps:

1) E:\JRun4\jre\bin>keytool -importcert -noprompt -trustcacerts -alias dca
-file "C
:\dcacerts\root.crt" -keystore E:\JRun4\jre\lib\security\cacerts (Note: I used
a .crt and not a .cer, which _should_ have no impact)
2) E:\JRun4\jre\bin>keytool -list -keystore E:\JRun4\jre\lib\security\cacerts
(to validate import successful)
3) Restarted the service on the client box

I get the oh-so-unhelpful "org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: The connection
attempt failed" error. Is this an error on my end or is the certificate bad?

RE: coldfusion service stop rsponding or CPU goes up tp 100%

2011-03-22 Thread Mark A. Kruger

Tom,

I don't think you need that Xincgc.. that's a pre-1.4 setting I think. I
think the newer JVM should be left more to it's own devices. If you see too
many "stop the world" pauses you might try the low pause collector which
works pretty well on larger heaps (though 4 gigs isn't really too large for
a 64x heap).

Other than that you have to give us more to go on :) What's in the
/runtime/logs/cfusion-out.log file? Any clues there? Any hs_pidxxx.log files
in runtime/bin? Throw us a bone.

2011-03-22 Thread James Holmes

Your perm size is way too small for a heap of 4GB (assuming you use a
good portion of that heap).

Check the logs for error messages just before the service locks up and
you'll probably see out of memory errors. If so, make the perm size
larger.

Re: who's in charge around here?

2011-03-22 Thread Michael Dinowitz

Zac,

Upgrading the site has been on my 'todo' list forever but it takes second
place to things like these lists, etc. The colors and UI are about 10 years
out of date and are in dire need for an upgrade. If you have an idea or two
on UI, I'd be very happy to look at it. I might not be great at creating
graphics/UI, but once given a design, I can make it work within a pixel.

I'll deal a bit with speed a little later today. I'm moving the JVM around,
upgrading to the latest release, and reading a few docs on better garbage
collection. It'll all help.

As for hosting, the site actually has very high mail traffic besides the
website itself and hosting is being provided by ahphosting.com (formerly
cfhosting.com). They've been supporting the site(s) for quite a few years
now.

I appreciate the offer of help. Cash is always nice, but hands on help comes
from the heart.

Thanks

I work for MI5 so i wouldn’t want people to find out :-), oops!

Re: Script tags and fckEditor

2011-03-22 Thread Dean Lawrence

The whole point of the scriptprotect attribute is to try and prevent
scripts from being submitted to your site. When you use fckEditor,
your submission is ultimately, just another form field. So if you have
added scripts in the editor, the scriptprotect attribute will strip
them out. So the only way that you can successfully submit the form
with the script tags is to disable scriptprotect.

Something that I have done in the past is to have scriptprotect turned
on in the main site, but turned off under my admin section of the
site. You would do this by creating a new Application.cfc or
Application.cfm file within your administration directory and turn off
scriptprotect there. This way the admins can use scripts within the
pages that they are editing, but normal users can't.

Re: who's in charge around here?

2011-03-22 Thread Michael Grant

Perhaps you'd better enjoy the mailing list vs. the web interface?

The person in charge is Michael Dinowitz. He's kick ass, but busy with about
300 children and tons of extra circular activities. To a newb it may seem
like the site is in disrepair, but it's still serving a wonderful purpose. I
(like many) don't even see the site anymore. I just follow it through the
mailing list subscriptions.

Are you volunteering to help MD with a new design?

having just recently found H.O.F ive used it a few times. there are some really
helpful, knowledgeable guys monitoring these lists and I’ve received some
great help from the CF Newbie list.

however the web site needs some attention. it's slow to respond and poorly
presented.

why are all the adverts over on the right hand side? they take up a whole
quarter of the page.

why must we be subscribed to each list before we can post?

when viewing a thread sometime it's all displayed, other times i have to
refresh the page, cant quite work it out.

considering how much experience there is floating around here i guess i just
expected it to be a little bit better put together.

I know communities like this are normally built up from people either donating
their time or cash so, if it's needed, I’d like to volunteer hosting
services. I'll have a new server online within a couple of weeks. let me know
