Re: Multiple domains going to one webspace

2002-02-18 Thread Bill Davidson

Rick - can you expand on this? I can't get IIS to allow multiple sites on
the same IP.

We've been having to do a bunch of CF magic to get multiple sites to live on
the same IP. CFlocating (as suggested by Thane) gets the beginning done,
but what about subsequent requests to a virtual domain require detection
and handling (like images, references to links, etc...)

Our domain router does the job well, but it is a bit of overhead that I
would like to avoid.

Thanks.

Is there a way to have multiple domains pointed at one block of
 webspace
and use CF to direct the person to a specific folder based on the
 domain
 typed in?

 Example:
www.fred.com and www.bob.com both hosted at the same spot and space.
 But
when I type www.fred.com I want to go to www.maindomainname.com/fred
 and if
 I type www.bob.com I want to go to www.maindomainname.com/bob.

A bit of both. It is written to be an application, but I kept custom tags

I have written a pretty feature rich DNS manager in CF (lots of built
intelligence - error checking and resolution, etc..). There's still a
 few
things left to do, but it works very well for the most part. I started
talking to my hosting provider, and we kinda thought the market would be
very limited. Is there an interest among the community? I would like
 to
convince myself it's worth spending the time to finish and release it.

If I get even minimal interest, I'll finish it, release it in beta and
 start
a listserve and go from there. If you don't mind, and want to respond
 to
this directly, CC me @ [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Anyone have any guesses?

Ok, got your point on encryption algorithms. Public encryptions
  scare
  me,
as at least they offer hints on to how they're done, making TRUE
 hackers
   one
step closer to knowing where to look to find the key, or what th
 e basis
  of
   the algorithm is.

   Wrong.

You can think about what makes a good encryption scheme as:

Give everybody the plans to your encryption method.
Give everybody the means to use your encryption method.

If they can't break your encryption even if they know all this, t
 hen
  you've
come up with a (somewhat) secure scheme.

However, before getting overly complicated, you could at least d
 o some
   level
of your own encryption without a lot of research that would prev
 ent the
   lazy
hacker from just ripping off your credit card numbers. Splittin
 g them
 in
two tables is not all that difficult to figure out.

NEVER EVER make your own ecryption scheme. How is a half-assed
 encryption
scheme better than no encryption at all (and trust me, NO ONE on
 this
 list
could even make a half-assed encryption scheme, let alone somethi
 ng that
  was
solid)? And are you hoping that only lazy hackers attack your
 system?

   If someone wants them
bad enough, they're still going to get them... Having access to
 your
database is one thing, getting access to your encryption code, e
 ven if
 it
   is
very basic is at least one larger step towards deterrence.

If you encryption is basic then a hacker won't need your encryp
 tion
  code.
Brute-force attack will decrypt it in a manner of seconds.

You're missing the point of encryption. Yes, all encryption sche
 mes are
breakable. It's how long it takes to decrypt it before the encry
 pted
information becomes useless. If it takes a hacker 100 years to d
 ecrypt
  your
CC numbers, you're doing fine, because all the users of those cre
 dit
 cards
will be dead and hence those CC numbers will be invalid.

As far as CFENCRYPT, I meant public in the fact that you can use
  CFDECRYPT
   to decrypt the values.

All good encryption schemes have their method of decryption as pu
 blic.
  All
bad encryption schemes have their method of decryption as private
 .

Roll your own encryption. I remember awhile back some
posted their algorithm for encryption in CF, and it
seemed pretty solid. If you use your own encryption
scheme, it would be a lot harder for a hacker to decrypt
 the CC number.

Yikes! I'd strongly recommend against writing your own encrypti
 on
algorithms, unless you're Bruce Schneier or the like. A good,
publicly-examined algorithm is your best bet. There's a reason
 why the
government takes so long to approve an encryption algorithm - p
 ublic
examination by experts is the best way to find flaws within the
  algorithm.

Here's a good quote on the subject:
http://www.counterpane.com/crypto-gram-9810.html#cipherdesign

Using a public standard (like cfencrypt) is not a
 very good solution.

The problem with CFENCRYPT isn't that it's a public standard, b
 ut
 rather
that it uses a relatively weak encryption strength (that, along
  with
 the
fact that the key is probably stored somewhere within the appli
 cation
  code
or environment).

Roll your own encryption. I remember awhile back some posted their
algorithm for encryption in CF, and it seemed pretty solid. If you use your
own encryption scheme, it would be a lot harder for a hacker to decrypt the
CC number. Using a public standard (like cfencrypt) is not a very good
solutiion.

I almost went down the path of cryptology - its a lot of fun, but I didn't
want to work in a vault the rest of my life.

 Sunday, January 27, 2002, 10:12:15 AM
 Hello CF-Talk,

I've got a simple site, and uses a small Access database. We will be
   taking credit cards.

Wondering what others consider a realistic practice to ensure
security to a reasonable level. What do others do?

The site will have a SLL, but I'm thinking along the lines of
encrypting the card number. However, I know how unsecure ColdFusions
   encryption is, so why bother?

If people do somehow encrypt the card number, would you be willing
to give examples? And I guess I'll need a way to unencrypt the
   numbers in an admin area.

I've seen where a site will store half of the number, and the second
half gets sent by email to the shop owners. Then the shop owners
need to go in and match up the numbers.

Thanks for any advice, recommendations on this.

 Best regards,
  Jeff Fongemie mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Best way to store credit cards in database?

2002-01-27 Thread Bill Davidson

Ok, got your point on encryption algorithms. Public encryptions scare me,
as at least they offer hints on to how they're done, making TRUE hackers one
step closer to knowing where to look to find the key, or what the basis of
the algorithm is. Yeah, there are certainly good ones out there, thus I
retract my blanket suggestion to roll your own. Dave's probably right.

However, before getting overly complicated, you could at least do some level
of your own encryption without a lot of research that would prevent the lazy
hacker from just ripping off your credit card numbers. Splitting them in
two tables is not all that difficult to figure out. If someone wants them
bad enough, they're still going to get them... Having access to your
database is one thing, getting access to your encryption code, even if it is
very basic is at least one larger step towards deterrence.

As far as CFENCRYPT, I meant public in the fact that you can use CFDECRYPT
to decrypt the values.

Yikes! I'd strongly recommend against writing your own encryption
algorithms, unless you're Bruce Schneier or the like. A good,
publicly-examined algorithm is your best bet. There's a reason why the
government takes so long to approve an encryption algorithm - public
examination by experts is the best way to find flaws within the algorithm.

Here's a good quote on the subject:
 http://www.counterpane.com/crypto-gram-9810.html#cipherdesign

Using a public standard (like cfencrypt) is not a
  very good solution.

The problem with CFENCRYPT isn't that it's a public standard, but rather
that it uses a relatively weak encryption strength (that, along with the
fact that the key is probably stored somewhere within the application code
 or environment).

On one note, I'd say that we should give Macromedia a break. I know
that they have had some website and support issues, but they have
delivered a solid release of both Server and Studio. Which is all you
can really expect, cuz for most of us, that's all we're really paying
 for.

I'm sure if you're not happy with how things are run, I'm sure they'd be
more than happy to sell you the division that produces ColdFusion.

However, as painful as a migration may be, how the hell do you turn off
production servers like that? I'll echo the thoughts about staging
servers - if you know what you're doing, once everything's good, you
should be able to throw the switch (in theory) with little to no
 downtime.

Maybe they're using Sitespring to manage the conversion :P

Dave you are right. I am not saying I am cryptology master, I just think I
could do better than the cfencrypt. That was my point - came out diluted
and misread, but I was basically telling this guy to not even think of
splitting the data into to tables and feel safe. Encryption methodologies I
studied in college and then after would be my foundation for building my
own... I was on my way to a life at the NSA/etc...

Best bet is absolutely to not store your CC number. If big BIG companies
can get ripped off with the CC numbers, then obviously hackers get their

thought their code was cool... but I'm just as sure that
serious hacker types (especially those who do it for the
money) were laughing their [censored] off when they ran
  in that alg.

I'd be willing to bet cash several of them owned :) the
alg within half an hour. Counting snack breaks.

For some reason, I thought it simply used 56-bit DES, but then I looked at
 the docs. Yeesh!

Encrypts a string. Encrypt uses a symmetric key-based algorithm in which
the same key is used to encrypt and decrypt a string. The security of the
encrypted string depends on maintaining the secrecy of the key. Encrypt
uses
 an XOR-based algorithm that uses a pseudo-random 32-bit key based on a
seed
passed by the user as a parameter to the function. The resultant data is
UUencoded and may be as much as three times the original size.

 I'm filled with confidence now.

Re: SQL server

2001-12-09 Thread Bill Davidson

Access and SQL Server are two separate different products.

Yes and no... Separate products, but one can interface with the other. I
use access as an interface to our SQL server ALL the time... If you have it
configured correctly it works quite nicely. It certainly loads a lot
faster than enterprise manager.

Create a new project (existing database), save it.. that will bring about
the connection dialog box. In server name, enter the ip address of your SQL
server. Enter all the login and password information, and then find the
database, hit OK, and you're done.

Works very similar to working with an actual Access database, however the
design view is different - it is SQL Server-ish (different datatypes, etc.)

 Laurent,

I'm not sure if I fully understood your question. It sounds like you are
tyring to get into SQL Server through Access or at least conscturct a SQL
Server database. To really do anything with SQL Server, you must install
the SQL Server 2000 software on your machine or the server you are working
on. I know access will let you upgrade your access database to a SQL
Server database, but you must actually connect to a machine that is
running
the SQL Server software. Access and SQL Server are two seperate different
 products.

Re: Grab formated text from file and put in database Doh!!

2001-09-25 Thread Bill Davidson

Phillip - each section would have different delimiters - you should break
it down and think of each part of the text file as a separate component, and
each separate component is delimited by a blank line.

For instance the first section (pseudo code at best here obviously),
start_title = Find (Title:) ;
end_title = Find (next end of line marker, start with Find(Title:);
Insert into Database
Title = (mid (doc, start_title, end_title)) ;
..repeat for next 2 fields..

Ingredients = getlistat(doc, 2, 'blank line');
Insert into Database
ingredients  = #ingredients#;

It's not going to be a straight forward few lines of code...

The GET request doesn't do anything except run the DOS dir

 Hello all,

I used cold fusion 5 and the Merant database drivers to create a new
database (is this dbase V?) Anyway, now I have created four tables and I
am trying to join two of them. What I would like to do is:

 select TERMS.termID, TERMS.term, CROSSREF.crossText
 from TERMS, CROSSREF
 where TERMS.termID = CROSSREF.termID

 but I get an error:
An error occurred retrieving data: ODBC Error Code =S0022 (column not
found)
[MERANT]{ODBC dBase driver]Field not found TERMID
Do I need to do joins in some different way with this driver? I have
looked at the odbc*.pdf file that comes with CF5 and it looks like what I
am doing should work just fine. Is there something I need to setup on the
 server in some different way

You can use it submit and or get data via url variables, or direct to the
database. Might want to start with flashcfm.com they have some good
information there.
As I get closer to getting working on that I'll let you know what we do.

Re: CFTREE was Re: REPOST Old Java controls with CF 5.0?

2001-08-30 Thread Bill Davidson

I am not using it for directories, and my tree is constantly changing. The
other problem that 'phumes' was probably running into was that the cftree
tag passes its data to the Java class using URL-like variables, and big
trees will have pages and pages of attributes. Saving the HTML, using
savecontent, writing to a file, or whatever does not help.

Re: Parsing CFML from a database field

2001-08-14 Thread Bill Davidson

You can roll your own parser. I wrote one that parses variables, and such,
nothing fancy, but it is a LOT better than writing to disk and reading it
back in.

If you just need variables parsed, I'd be willing to license it to you.

Whatever A/MM does with cold fusion, this should be super high on their list
of things to do - make the parser able to parse variables, especially
variables returned from queries.

Subject: Parsing CFML from a database field

 Hi,

I know that this kind of problem has already been examined in this list
before. However i would like to reach a final conclusion once and for all.
:-)

I have got several CF templates but they are not stored in files on my
server but on fields in a database. I would like to retrieve this CFML
content, parse it and eventually produce any output as a normal web page.

Now, the only solution I have seen consists in creating a temporary file
with that retrieved CFML and cfinclude it to get it parsed. In my case I
suspect this operation will increase the response time considerably as IO
operations to disk are involved so my question is very simple is this
really the ONLY WAY of doing this?

Any comments will be greatly appreciated...

I am sure this has been dealt with before, but I'm having some issues with
this one -- maybe someone can help.

I am doing a search and replace routine, and I want the user to be able to
enter in the text and have that passed EXACTLY how it was pasted in. It is
to be used often for replacing blocks of HTML code in a database. I have
seen custom tags that display the original correctly, but I they do it by
substituted one thing for another. Here I need to get an exact duplicate of
what was entered.

Any thoughts?

 Hi cf-talk,

We're deep in the middle of the design and development for the
next major release of ColdFusion and are looking for some good
input on ColdFusion enhancements. Below is a link to an
enhancement-tracking application that we've put online temporarily.
Inside you will find over 200 CF enhancement requests that we have
received and logged over the past year that you may vote on or add
 to.

You will need to create a simple account to vote. Note that this
system will only be available publicly for two days as we need to
put this application on a solid server before opening up
permanently -- we'd just like some quick feedback now.

 http://syndication.allaire.com/vote/

Your detailed input is important. Please post comments in the
app beside any features or enhancements that interest you. Not
only is your vote important, but also descriptions about how you'd
use such a feature or a story about how you needed such a feature
in the past. Please be as verbose as possible when posting --
more info, the better! Feel free to not only vote on items but to
 also add your own items.

 Standard disclaimer:

Other variables go into the blender of feature definition.
100 votes for I'd like CF to emulate the Vic-20 does not
necessarily mean that this feature will make the cut. This is
simply one of a number of methods that we're using to help guide
 product development.

 Thanks,
 Terry

Re: Vote on ColdFusion Enhancements!

Yeah, I am well aware of it, thanks. There's just a few things I think could
benefit from the voting system. I really appreciate the MM people putting
this up for CF. It shows that at least they appear to care, which makes me
happy! Beta testing and feature requests should not go together. The last
thing you need when you are trying to fix something is a new feature to come
along and break something else.

However I'd be more than happy to dive into formal beta testing of the new
Studio I am where I am today from working with software companies to
develop their products - literally. I worked so closely with a company that
I beta test with that I ended up in their office space for almost 2 years,
which decided where brainbox would be born.

Best regards.

 that problem.

In short, I don't think 140MB is anywhere close to being a problem.

There's 512mb installed right now. OK, if that doesn't seem out of
line, then I'll leave it for a longer period next time and see what
 happens.

 Thanks!

140MB? that sounds like SQL, not a memory leak. you can
restrict the amount of memory (or range thereof) SQL uses.
how much RAM is on your SQL server? it really shouldn't be
less than 512MB and ideally, 1GB+.

I finally moved some of our Cold Fusion Access databases to
SQL Server 7 on a separate server. Things are running well,
but I notice that over several days SQL uses more and more
memory. It starts at about 40mb but is now running at about
90mb. When I restarted the service a few days ago, it was up

I'm using coldfusion and access (ODBC) and having a problem. When
multiple insert statements arrive at the same time only the first insert
statement is accepted. We don't have that many users on the system
(Intranet) so it doesn't make sense to migrate from access.

Is there a way of queuing the insert statements, or any other way of
solving
 this problem?

 This is getting WAY strange.

I've inserted some extra fields into a database table that is used to
track
user progress through this application. I've found that not only are
people
hijacking sessions, but the ID/Token values as well - I've got multiple
people in the app at once that are sporting the same ID/Token pair.

The creepy thing is, I'm passing the ID/Token pair in the URL for each
page
refresh so how, pray tell, would these be changing?

 I'm doing a href=index.cfm?CFID=#CFID#CFTOKEN=#CFTOKEN#blah/a
basically. Is this flawed? Should I be using #URL.CFID# etc.?

Re: Is it possible to break out the code in a table from a file that is read in

2001-06-21 Thread Bill Davidson

I think the easiest way to do it is to modify the file slightly so that the
td for that piece of that table is different, so you can find it, like do
td , which is perfectly legal, but it is different from the other td's
(or use a title=key attribute or something).

cfset begin_pos = find(TD , variable_that_contains_the_table_code) + 5
cfset end_pos = find(/TD, variable_that_contains_the_table_code,
begin_pos) -1
cfset string_chunk = mid(variable_that_contains_the_table_code, begin_pos,
end_pos)

Something like that should work. I think. If you use a different qualifier
instead of td , just replace that bit.

I have a file that has the code in it for a table.
Is there a way that I can break out this table code into say q query or

 For instance:
 TABLE

 TDHeader/TD
 TDCode1/TD
 TDCode2/TD

Re: Newbie-CF trying to process Hex numbers :-)

2001-05-31 Thread Bill Davidson

It's because you have a pound sign inside of a cfoutput block. This is a
special character for coldfusion to reference a variable. Either escape the
# by doubling it up - ##, or just leave it out. It will work fine without
#'s for representing hex values.

using
background colors, text colors, and CSS, etc.

Okay, now I have a problem ;) CF is trying to process my hex numbers, and
I
can't figure out how to fix it. I am trying to update records, using
#Trim(ColumnName)#. My code can be found here:

 http://www.sitediva.com/code.txt

When I passed the ContactID to this page through a link on another page, I
got
 this error:

The last successfully parsed CFML construct was static text occupying
document
 position (29:28) to (38:15).

The specific sequence of files included or processed is:
 C:\AddressBook\update_biz_form.cfm

So I go to the line, and it's the body bgcolor=#FF text=#00
tag,
the after the first hex number. I stripped out the hex numbers, then it
gets
stuck on the next one, tr bgcolor=#99 ...

I can't find anything in the book that talks about this, can anyone help?

Re: Newbie-CF trying to process Hex numbers :-)

2001-05-31 Thread Bill Davidson

Couple things I forgot to mention:
1) Yeah, books are boring, but Ben's book is outstanding and you can learn a
lot from it. It is laid out very well, and covers things you really need to
know (like this.)

2) You're including the header inside of cfoutput that is query driven -
this will generate multiple head tag blocks... Probably a BAD idea,
unless you know you're going to only have one record coming back from the
query - still probably a bad idea. Looking again at the code, you'll
probably not run into multiple records coming back as you specified a where
statement in your SQL, but, it's a bad practice to get in.

3) Try to keep what's inside a cfoutput block to a minimum, everything
inside a cfoutput block, as the server has to parse everything inside of
that and it will slow your application down.

Re: Is it possible to nest CFQUERY inside CFLOOP?

2001-05-31 Thread Bill Davidson

You should be able to nest cfquery in a cfloop that is not query based...
Maybe the actual problem is that cfloop doesn't implicitly force a cfoutput,
so chances are your variables are not getting resolved. Include a
cfoutput inside the loop.

Here's a code snippet where I am nesting a query inside a loop:
cfloop index=loop_index from=1 to=#ArrayLen(jobs_time_spent)#
 cfoutput

  CFQUERY name=qry_job_rate datasource=#application.dsn#

   SELECT dbo.Jobs.Jobs_Job_Name, dbo.Employee_Job_Rates.*
FROM {oj dbo.Jobs LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.Employee_Job_Rates ON
dbo.Jobs.Jobs_ID = dbo.Employee_Job_Rates.Employee_job_rates_job_id }
  where Employee_job_rates_employee_id = #attributes.user_id#
  and dbo.Jobs.Jobs_Job_Name = '#jobs_names[loop_index]#'

 /CFQUERY
.
/cfoutput
/cfloop

The only other thing I could think of is the list attribute for cfloop.
Maybe cold fusion internally handles lists as a query. Maybe just do a
from to loop and only do the query and related code when the index is in
the list. That's what I am doing in the previous block of code, except with
arrays.

Re: Is it possible to nest CFQUERY inside CFLOOP?

2001-05-31 Thread Bill Davidson

You're absolutely correct. I think someone answered this question earlier
with the correct response.

cfloop from=1 to=10 index=loop_index
#loop_index#
/cfloop

You'll get a bunch of #loop_index#'s.

However

cfloop from=1 to=10 index=loop_index
cfoutput#loop_index#/cfoutput
/cfloop

works as intended.

Like you said, the variables in his block were resolved because they were
inside of a cfquery tag block, but it is at least worth noting that cfloop
doesn't parse and resolve variables on its own. Thanks for pointing that
out.

And I think the conclusion was that the lst_region list attribute was
surrounded by pounds, so it wasn't resolving into an actual list?

Re: Correctly using CFOUTPUT

2001-05-31 Thread Bill Davidson

I've always been curious about that. I saw Ben Forta speak once about that
issue, and have seen that here is well. Is it just that the looping PCode
is just a lot more cumbersome because Allaire grouped so many different kind
of looping controls in one tag? I don't get it, loops are usually low
overhead in other programming languages.

Hmm.. Maybe query based loops is where the problem lies. They might have to
do a lot of conversion between a clean loop and a query resolution that adds
the overhead.

 1) What's easier for you (and your team) to read and update
 2) What's faster on then server when it's PCode

In answer to this, Listing 1 is always easier to read, but is slower on
the
 server
Why? you ask (sounds of Why? from all over the world)...

Here's how the CF Server looks at a template (if you don't have CFSetting
 EnableCFOutputOnly=Yes on);
It sends everything straight to the browser that's not a CF tag outside of
a
CFOutput without even thinking, once it reaches a CFOutput it has to scan
through the code to find if anything requires any conversion from
function/variable/field contents into displayable values and then converts
 those...

When you don't have any functions/variables/fields in the code, you're
effectively making CF work for nothing

Remeber that a file being larger in size (before PCode) means nothing to
how
fast it might run on the server - it's the actual work that the server is
 doing that's more important

If you wanted the best performance from a CFOutput query= tag, then you
should use CFLoop query= and only CFOutput the fields

Hope this helps explain why and why not to use CFOutput on everything

 Hello fellow CFers,

I'm trying to process a textarea variable and break it up into lines of
aprox 70-80 characters in length for transmission as a text formatted

Can someone help me with the code to parse the variable into lines so that
I
can insert a #CHR(13)##CHR(10)# at the end of every line. The challenge is
 to break between words.

 Thanks.

Contact Edgewebhosting.net - we have 2 boxes with them now and are going to

Win2K/IIS/CF. They also have a dedicated SQL Server 2000 box for their
dedicated server users, which is an added bonus. May not be the absolute
cheapest (probably close) but their service is unparalleled.

Re: cookie form url -less sessions

There's a custom tag on Allaire's site that will automatically add the ID

using fusebox, is super-easily implemented.

You might look into that and see if that solves this for you.

hey hey everyone.. here's a dilemma for you.

i've been task with createing an application model for a very large
application that is being gutted and rebuilt. now i've decided that we
need both application and session variables. however the govt doesnt allow
cookies on thier machines.. even for intranets. we have way too much code
to go through and add cfid and cftoken to the url or to form vars.. so i'm
 kinda stuck.

the only thing i have going for me is that the users must log in using
challange response, so i know who is who in the application. and with
that, i could add a structure to the application class which bears the
name of the user.. then add variables to the structure from there...
thereby creating a session that lasts untill the server is rebooted.. but
i'd much rather create a session taht times out and expunges the data etc
etc. so my thought would be to create 2 variables in the
application.#username# class that are cfid and CFtoken then use those to
refrence the session... i'm not sure if that'll work tho..

any other thoughts on how this could be done?

Re: SQL Server 2000

2001-05-14 Thread Bill Davidson

Be sure to double check your stored procedures. SQL Server 7 was tolerant
of the create procedure name being different from the actual stored
procedure name, but 2000 isn't. Or at least the import routine isn't. It
will just fail, but if it does, then that's probably the problem.

When we ported our largest database over, I ended up doing one bit at a time
with the Enterprise Manager. Trying to do it all at once was an exercise it
futility ... It would get 70% done, and then fail on a view or a stored
proc. Do your data last, that way the time consuming stuff, which should be
fine, won't cause you long delays to find these stupid little problems.

As far as CF goes - I didn't think we've had to do anything different at all
in our code, and it's humming along quite nicely for us.

Re: SQL 2000 Database List.

2001-05-14 Thread Bill Davidson

For most purposes we use Access (with all the appropriate 2000 patches) to
talk to our SQL 2000 datasources, and it's much faster than the enterprise
manager, as you connect to a single datasource, no taking forever to load
all the datasources.

I've always been tempted to go your route, Dave, as I typically like command
prompts (call me crazy), but haven't tried it yet.

I didn't have the earlier version loaded at home, but 2000 is
very slow when listing databases. I think they should provide a
search-type feature so that users don't have to drill-down when
they know what they want. Maybe more like a comand line that allows:

  use server.dbo.database

I think this would save me about 15 minute a day.
  (significant enough)

You know, there is a command line interface to SQL Server, which allows
you
to do anything that's possible with T-SQL. You can use isql or osql, which
are true command-line clients, as well as isql/w, which is a windowed
interface. If you find yourself performing the same sorts of tasks in
Enterprise Manager over and over again, you might take a look at these.
You
can't do quite everything through them, but they might suit your needs.

From someone who has written code the majority of my life (usually for

away
from the problem. Not a lot, just enough so you're not seeing red. If
 you
are frustrated, you're not going to be productive. Go back later, and
document your code as best as you can. Document every friggin' line if

Then start debugging. I have never REALLY been able to get debugging

Comment out sections of your code until you get a page that works. You
may
have to substitute the commented out code with strict setting of values
to
replace logic that otherwise exists. Start isolating the problems, and
 you
can always add your own debugging code, like variable testing, and
CFOUTPUTing your values as you go.

This is also where a methodology like OOD (in other languages) or
Fusebox
(in Fusebox) helps a lot - you can isolate problems pretty quickly. My
fusebox code is so segmented that I can quickly see where the error is
occurring. It helps to have debug output on.

Also, error messages/crashes in debug mode in compiled languages/etc
 should
be the easiest kind to fix as it tells you exactly where in the code
 things
are blowing up. Logic bugs are the hardest to deal with. They're a
tiny

Re: handling 404 errors with CF?

2001-05-04 Thread Bill Davidson

Yeah, actually I wrote a whole functionality-set of CF catching 404's. I
wanted a way to handle virtual directories - like www.brainbox.tv/clients
for instance - there's no folder there, but instead I wanted it to relocate
to a point in our main fusebox app. One of our developers suggested an
ingeniously simple way of doing it, so here's what I did..

In IIS, I pointed 404's to a CF template that checks to see if the
administrator has set up a virtual directory for whatever URL the user is
trying to access.. I wrote an interface to do a few different kinds of
virtual paths, one for URL's, one for Fuseactions, one to force a 404. Also
if the 404 was thrown, it handles it a little more elegantly than normal 404
errors. I'm constantly evolving this - it has a lot of power. It's a lot
easier to give a client a URL like brainbox.tv/whatever than some long
fuseaction... and I no longer have to make folders and index.cfm's to show
some sample images for clients. That combined with our content management
makes me almost never have to Remote Admin in to put some stuff up for
clients, which is one less monkey on my back and good service for them.

That's a lot more than you were asking, but

Here's how to set it up in IIS:

Re: Credit Card DB Encryption Methodology

2001-05-04 Thread Bill Davidson

So what are you doing in those cases, do you have to contact the customer?
Curious...

By the way, I think you've done a great job of dealing with CC encryption.
Good approach. Even though the major on-line vendor site that we've written
doesn't do credit card processing, we still prompt for the password before
the order is placed. Yeah, its a small pain for the customer, but it is a
whole lot more secure Especially in this application where it is mostly
college students, who may easily log in, walk away from a public terminal,
and forget to logout.

-Bill
www.brainbox.tv

snip
I thought the reason most people kept card numbers around was
for handling credits, delayed charges, and other problems (or
possibly because of record-keeping requirements of their bank),
or because they're doing the credit card charges manually (or
at least with some human intervention) rather than in real
time. It doesn't seem like your solution would work in that
  situation.

Correct, that wouldn't work here, because we don't have an unecrypted
version of the user's password available.

Biggest thing (or at least one of them) that kills me with netscape is that
you can't do a background image for just a cell in a table, or if you do a
background image for the table, it gets started and stopped/tiled/whatever

is my usual trick to make a repeater. Oh, and it totally wrecks style

The main problems you'll come across between IE and Netscape are tables.
If
one tag has not been closed the whole page will not show up on Netscape.
Also borders on images will show up of you haven't specified border=0.
Sorry
if you already know this, but thought I'd mention it just in case!

Also, in Instant HTML - programmer's Reference by Alex Homer et al, it
goes through all html tags and says which ones do and don't work in

specify a username/password. We have a server that's just for mail, but we
authenticate based on username password not IP.

Subject: E-newsletter kills our server - any ideas?

When we send our weekly e-newsletter (list of 8500 emails) our network guy
complains that we're putting our server up to 100% and it kills the shop
(asp, MS Site Server Commerce) and the site only comes up again after a re
 boot.

Can anyone give any suggestions as to whether putting the server up to
100% usage would be such a huge problem? I thought that was the idea -
to use full processing power to do the job as fast as possible. If it
isnt desirable, how can I reduce the demand on teh server that this email
uses? (It's just a CFMAIL app sending a plain text email to addresses
 pulled from our SQLServer7 database).

If it's OK to have the server at 100%, what else might be causing this
kind of problem that I'm getting blamed for?

Re: Feedback to Jeff Whatcott - Macromedia

2001-04-30 Thread Bill Davidson

I had a thought the other day, that I wanted to run by people - specifically
A/MM people. Have you thought at all about putting out an edition of Cold
Fusion that is like a lite version (very cheap/free) - that just doesn't
have the database connectivity side to it? It would get people used to
programming in CF contexts and methodologies, but would limit the software
enough that as people's needs got more advanced, they would need the
database stuff. Move people from client side scripting to server-side -
changing the way developers who are just starting or are looking for cheap
ways of doing things to migrate to the Cold Fusion world. Not only
promoting CF server sales, but Studio sales as well.

I think I recall some sort of lite version awhile back that had some
differences (can't remember what), but I think this actually would get new
users in, programming in at least pseudo-Cold Fusion, and wanting more. I
know it was originally a database application development package, but now
its way beyond that.

Just a thought...from a very happy CF developer. Thanks for the decision on
the liscencing!

Makes sense. Once again, we're getting into the realm of features that
would be desired only by hosting providers. How about the ability, on a
site by site basis, to severely limit CF's functionality, essentially to
the
level of Express functionality. One problem with this, however, is that
the

(last time I looked) does not.

Oops. The other thing you can do is stick in a cfparam in the action page.
like,
cfparam name=form.MiddleInit value=

Then if MiddleInit is undefined, it will be defined as an empty string,

This seems like a lot of extra work, when a simple page counter is easy
enough to write. When the page loads change one value in the database,
incrementing by one, and display that number. 2 queries, 1 table, 1 field /

works very well.

Webtrends is great, clients love it, but it seems like a fairly inefficient

OT: Traveling between networks...

2001-02-24 Thread Bill Davidson

I posted this in response to someone else's email on another mailing list
(completely unrelated). I thought, some of you might benefit from it...

I bounce back and forth between the office network, and the home network a
lot. I, unfortutantely, am still running WIn98 on my VAIO, so it is a bit
of a pain to switch IP address, etc. (We aren't running a DHCP server). So
I created two registry patches that I place on my desktop to ease the
transition. One is called office.reg, and the other is home.reg. That way
I just double click on where I am going before shutdown, and I'm set when I
get there. In case any of you are in the same position, this may help
you -- it's the contents of my "office.reg" file:
-
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\0002]
"DriverDesc"="TCP/IP"
"InfSection"="MSTCP.ndi"
"IPAddress"="192.168.1.20"
"IPMask"="255.255.255.0"
"DeviceVxDs"="vtdi.386,vip.386,vtcp.386,vdhcp.386,vnbt.386"
"InstallVnbt"="0"
"InfPath"="NETTRANS.INF"
"ProviderName"="Microsoft"
"DriverDate"=" 4-23-1999"
"DevLoader"="*ndis"
"NodeType"="1"
"DefaultGateway"="192.168.1.1"
-

So you just need to change the gateway IP address to reflect where you
are, and changing locations is a little easier.

Re: Parsing??

2000-12-16 Thread Bill Davidson

To be really efficient in doing this, learn regular expressions and use
CF's regular expression functions. Otherwise you'll be writing a parser
that is bulky to handle many different cases, unless the page you are
formatting is always pretty much the same, but just some different data.
Not knowing REs as well as I should I usually do the stupid thing and write
a parser that is "dumber" -- looking for specific data, rather than data
that fits a rule. Do yourself favor, and don't follow my lead. ;)

Anyhow

A general parsing algorithm that can find a value that is a "word" --
without RE, could be something like this (NOTE this is a pseudo-code
algorithm, not at all syntactically correct for CF... its up to you to
interpret it to CF, that's the fun part anyhow...)

.
/* find the known string's position in the page, using space as the
delimiters */
List_location = FindInList("known_string_data", "page_body", " ")

/* Retrieve the string that lives at the location after the "known page
component */
String_You_were_looking_for  = ("page_body", List_location+1, " ")
.

That would be useful in a page like:
"Your message was sent on Thursday"

and you were trying to figure out when the message was sent.

If you decide to go this route, pay special attention to the argument order
in which Cold Fusion's functions are expecting to receive them.
Can't remember which one always gets me, but one of the functions or set of
functions (arrays/List/RE) is a little different the rest...
Maybe it's this:

Find(substring, string [, start ])

ListContains(list, substring [, delimiters ])

Yeah, that's probably it - Find wants the substring first, and listcontains
wants the substring second... From their naming it kinda makes sense, but
it's an easy thing to forget when you're whipping out codeMaybe someone
has a custom tag function, FindInList -- Allaire really should add this,
since it would increase consistency in this little language we all use
love/hate/_. ;)

I have successfully used the cfhttp tag to pull a webpage and then
display
it with CFHTTP.FileContent. But how do I just display specific parts?

  Rich

Craig already showed you one method.

Basic info is that cfhttp.filecontent is one_big_string.
You use the various cf string functions to extract
 what you want from one_big_string.
Regular expressions help a lot (see function list
 in docs).
When you grab a web page's content with cfhttp
all the content is stored in the variable cfhttp.filecontent.
If you need to extract more than one item from
one_big_string, you might want to copy one_big_string
to additional variables - one variable for each extraction.
That keeps you from having to refresh cfhttp.filecontent.

 Thus,

 cfset tmp1=cfhttp.filecontent
 . do extractions
. ending with content_1 you want to use

 cfset tmp2=cfhttp.filecontent
  do extractions
. ending with cntent_2 you want to use

 repeat

The simplest extraction method is using the
mid() function. If the web page is static,
never changes and you count the char positions
to set the attritbutes of mid(), then you need to
 do nothing more.

A little more complex is using Find() to set
the beginning and end values of mid(). If the
web page is dynamic, but the info you want
always begins with a specific char sequence
and ends with a specific char sequence, then
you can use Find() or FindNoCase() to determine
where to begin and end your mid() extraction.

In some cases you can use the suite of
List functions to do your extractions.
In particular when the cfhttp.filecontent is
a collection of well formed sentences you
can use chr(32),chr(10),chr(13) as a list
delimiters and go from there. I would classify
this as a technique for a special case.

Better methods involve using regular expression
 via the REFind(),REFindNoCase(),REReplace(),
 and REReplaceNoCase() functions along with
 several other string manipulation functions
 and techniques.

Beyond string manipulation wddx and xml
 can be your solution.

 Beyond common packet formation and
 trasmission formats (like xml, wddx)
there is AI based pattern recognition
 and cognitive artificial ideation, but
for all practical purposes this amounts
to nothing more than employing an
 esp() function  :) .

 Hey Guys/Gurls:

I am trying to do some server side validation for a phone number, but I am
running into an odd problem. I split the phone number entry form into three
textboxes the first one for area code (ie must be 3 numbers) and then the
two parts of the phone number (ie must be 3 numbers and then must be 4
numbers). I check to make sure the length of each textbox is correct and
then I try to check if they are numeric, however it will throw an error.

My code looks something like this:

 cfif not IsNumeric("attributes.custPhone1") or not
IsNumeric("attributes.custPhone2") or not
IsNumeric("attributes.custPhone3")
 cfset attributes.error = attributes.error "Please enter a valid
phone number.br"
 /cfif

The strange part is that when I take out the not IsNumeric() statements
for the first two form variables it works fine. Ideas???

You know they don't and I know they don't, but earlier in
this thread the gentleman said they where making it across
"reboots". The only thing that would explain that is if the
data was being held in a cookie. Now I guess the question
is which machine is he talking about the reboot on. If it's
the Client machine, then it makes perfect sense as the
cookies are like David Watts pointed out the CFID and
CFTOKEN which act as pointers to the session stored in the
memory on the server. However if he was talking about the
server being rebooted then there is something else that is
not being brought into this thread. That is all I was

Session variables are stored in client side
cookies and/or
server memory. They DO NOT get stored in the
registry. The
variables that get stored in the registry are Client
variables. There is a BIG difference in
  the two. For
example you cant story a structure in a Client
variable with
out using WDDX on it, etc. Hope this helps

Re: Update Query/Output question from a newbie...

2000-10-22 Thread Bill Davidson

Without going to in depth into what you are trying to do(I get lost after
about 5 sentences - mind goes elsewhere ;)) - you may try to use dot
notation for your queries, and see if that helps. So in other words, try:
cfoutput
#query1.var_name#
#query2.other_var_name#
/cfoutput

Dot notation is a very useful thing to learn, even if it doesn't help you in
this case, it is extremely handy.

Subject: Update Query/Output question from a newbie...

Hi all and thanks for taking time to look this over. I will try my best to
keep it as brief as possible, although I need to give you some background
on
my problem. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I have a client I did a site for about 4 years ago and it have never
really
been changed much. The site owner asked me to update the look and
functionality of the site to make it easier to use. He also requested that
I
create a system that would allow him to update the Distributors section on
his own, so I went with ColdFusion, because I want to learn more about it.

I am working on the code for the Distributors first. The original page is
 http://www.mfay.com/Locations.htm. Don't laugh, it's really Old School...

I stared with my Database in MS Access, dbcms.mdb. I have 2 tables,
 tbldistrib and tblstates.

tbldistrib has the following columns: distrib_id (auto number),
 distrib_name, distrib_city, distrib_state and distrib_phone

tblstates has the following columns: state_id (auto number), state_name
and
state_abb (incase he wants to use abbreviation later)

Next I started on the Add New Distributor area of his CMS. I created the
insert form using Text type inputs for name, city and phone. I used a
select
box for the sate and got the select options from tblstates/state_names in
 the Database.

the code I used for the select box:

 Query:

 CFQUERY NAME="GetState" DATASOURCE="dbcms"
 SELECT state_name
 FROM tblstates
 /CFQUERY

 Output:

 SELECT NAME="distrib_state"
 CFOUTPUT QUERY="GetState"
 OPTION
 #GetState.state_name#
 /OPTION
 /CFOUTPUT
 /SELECT

All went according to plan and it works fine. I then created the display
page and messed around with the ordering and formatting until I have it
real
close to the original style of listing the distributors. You can find it
at:
 http://xiondev2.dynip.com/cms/list_distrib.cfm

Then I started on the Update Distributor section... I can make this work
by
 using the following

 Query:

 CFQUERY DATASOURCE="dbcms" NAME="Distributor"
 SELECT distrib_name,
 distrib_city,
 distrib_state,
 distrib_phone
 FROM tbldistrib
 WHERE distrib_id = #distrib_id#
 /CFQUERY

 Output:

 CFOUTPUT QUERY="Distributor"

 FORM ACTION="distrib_update.cfm" METHOD="post"
 INPUT TYPE="hidden" NAME=distrib_id" Value="#distrib_id#"

 p
 Distributor Name:
 INPUT TYPE="text" NAME=distrib_name" SIZE="35" MAXLENGTH="50"
   Value="#Trim(distrib_name)#"

..and so forth for each form field. What I would like to do is have the
"State Name" portion of the form return as a select box as in the insert
form, displaying the current distrib_state as the default option while
also
populating the rest of the select box (options) with the data (state
names)
from the tblsates/state_names in the database. This way my client can
change
the Distributor State if he needs to in the same manner as when he adds a
 new distributor.

I tried running 2 Queries and 2 outputs calling a distrib_id in the url
 (...cfm?distrib_id=30)

 Query:

 CFQUERY DATASOURCE="dbcms" NAME="GetState"
 SELECT state_name
 FROM tblstates
 /CFQUERY

 Output:

 SELECT NAME="distrib_state"
 CFOUTPUT QUERY="GetState"
 OPTION
 #GetState.state_name#
 /OPTION
 OPTION
 #Trim(distrib_state)#
 OPTION
 /CFOUTPUT
 /SELECT

 and received errors:

 Invalid tag nesting configuration

A query driven CFOUTPUT tag is nested inside a CFOUTPUT tag that also has
a
QUERY= attribute. This is not allowed. Nesting these tags implies that you
want to use grouped processing. However, only the top-level tag can
specify
the query that drives the processing.

I moved things around several times and got several different results and
errors, lol but nothing like what I was thinking about.

Any ideas on how I can accomplish what I am looking for? Should I go back
to
the insert form and have him manually enter the state information and
forget
about the select box and the tblstates idea? The actual goal was to learn
_how_ to do this rather than it being a "must have" in the system, but I
am
 out of ideas.

Any help is much appreciated and I am sorry for being long on words, but I
wanted to make sure my question was clear enough to elicit clear answers
 that I can understand.

I have placed all the CF code in .txt files at:

 http://xiondev2.dynip.com/cms/cftext/insertform.txt

Re: CFMAIL question.

2000-10-09 Thread Bill Davidson

Here's more details -
I use netmoves to send faxed orders from on our sites. I can send them HTML
formatted faxes as long as the body is completely empty, and the HTML is an
attachment. If I choose HTML as the TYPE in CFMAIL, it is just put in the
body. No good. If I use Outlook Express's Rich Text mode (HTML) to send an
email to the fax server it works exactly how I would like it to.

So the process goes:
1) customer builds order
2) We display the order and then they confirm
3) We dynamically generate emails to be sent back to customer, one for
records, and one that goes to the fax server.

I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and write a file out to the server
and then send it. Not nearly as elegant as I would like, but I guess it
will do... Unless someone has a better idea!?

If anyone wants to see the system in action, it is www.deliverU.com
It is an operational site, so no test orders please. All orders are
actually faxed through to the restaurants.

TIA,
Bill

I think that the fact that the html is treated as an attachment or not is
more down to the mail client. Outlook 97 and similar will display the
message as blank with an attachment. Newer clients, eg. Outlook 2000 are
smart enough to display the message as html.

Why would you not want the message displayed anyway?

Sorry, read to fast... "must have an attachment." Okay, rename the file
from ".HTM" to something like ".MYFILE" before you CFMAIL it. The user's
email client will not recognize the format and it will be attached.

Re: Junk Code was Re: ASP or Coldfusion - There is no Question

2000-09-24 Thread Bill Davidson

A few suggestions:
1) If your code cannot be followed by a third party without completely
dissecting it, it is junk code - (COMMENT!)
2) Go back a few steps and think about what you are writing. Good
algorithms lead to good code. Poorly planned algorithms, schemas, and
database design will lead to 'junk code'.
3) Watch the debug timings of your pages, if there are templates that are
taking a couple hundred milliseconds, yet not accomplishing much, then start
to investigate this.
4) Not locking shared access variables can lead to jc (getting tired of
typing it out)
5) Lack of error handling can lead to jc
6) Over selective SQL can lead to jc (try to limit what you are SELECTing)
7) Doing the same thing over and over.

Try to pick a coding methodology, or at least coding conventions and stick
to them, they'll make your stuff infinitely better.

You might want to read through some data structure and algorithm books. I
had a decent one in school, and even though I HATED the class, it really did
pay off. Makes you evaluate how you handle things.

Good luck.

 Hi all

Does anybody know how to access a Javascript variable in Cold Fusion? To
give you an example, I have some JS running as part
of a cross-select box in Cold Fusion. I need to be able to access the
values
of the elements in the right hand box, and these are stored within a
Javascript variable. But I need to create a Cold Fusion list out of these
elements, so I need CF to be able to resolve this variable. I've always
wondered how to do this, and never found the code, so I'd love to find out
how it's done. Probably something simple that I'll kick myself for...

 Thanks

Re: Ascii Date to CF Date

2000-09-11 Thread Bill Davidson

The CreateDate function might be your best bet. Perhaps something like
this:
cfset new_date_CF = createdate(listgetat(asciidate, 1, "/"),
listgetat(asciidate, 2, "/"), listgetat(asciidate, 3, "/"))
cfset new_date_ODBC = createODBCdate(new_date)

This should give you a CF date, and a database compatible date from
asciidate.

Untested, but should work.

After I have imported my Ascii file, I have a date which is displayed as
 '9/9/2000'

Now, I though that if I use the format statement
 cfset pDATEOFMAINT = #DateFormat(DATEOFMAINT, "dd-mmm-yy")#
this would put my date in the proper format.

This should be treated no different then if it was passed via a form. Now
I
could parse the data out and put it in the right format, but is this the
 best practice for doing this.

Thank you and I'll be busy reading up on how CF treats dates.
