Hi,

Has anyone been able to code a Cold Fusion page that can talk successfully
with the Fed-Ex Ship API. I have take a look on their site and as usually
all the examples are in ASP/ASP.NET or Java. I am trying to do this with CF
of course.

If anyone has any info on this with using CF or even ASP or Java, can you
let me know how you accomplished this. I cannot get it to work at all.

Thanks

RE: FED-Ex API calls

2003-04-04 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)
What version of CF are you trying to do this with?

From what I know of the FedEx API, you can connect to it with Java, hence
you should be able to write a servlet/web service for Jrun/CFMX.

Another option is that you can use COM objects to connect with FedEx. I
would think you create a CFOBJECT to instantiate the object and connect to
it using cfscript.

Just my thoughts. I'd help more, but downloading FedEx's api on a UPS
machine would probably be a fireable offence. :)

Believe I wanted to go the UPS route, but I had no choice. I assume the
Fed-Ex was the low bidder on the contract and won - that's about all I know
about it.

I am just a developer doing what I am told to do.

Yes the logo is nicer and I do want to drive the big brown truck :-)

But serious if anyone has any info it would really help.

Thanks for all the help.

What I ended up doing was
cfif isDefined(URL.fuseaction)
cfloop collection=#URL# item=fname
cfif #Evaluate(URL.  fname)# neq
cfset paramlist = paramlistfname  =
URLEncodedFormat(#StructFind(URL, fname)#)
/cfif
/cfloop
/cfif

DANGIT.. I JUST realized that all I'm doing there is passing the query
string from one parameter to another.

cfset paramlist=  #CGI.QUERY_STRING#

Does the same thing I was trying to do in the first place!

Chalk it up to a bad Friday.

Thanks anyway,

Rob,

You can use CFSCRIPT and PARSE the URL. It's a pain in the butt! I feel
your pain I just ran into this issue where I had a requirement to use
GET, do to an IE issue with a JavaScript reload to a Parent window from
a child window. My work around was in the end to just use a self
submitting form and set the form variables to SESSION variables then
where I needed the variables I set them to the proper scope and CFLOCKed
them down.

I was going absolutely bonkers not understanding why CFUPDATE wasn't
always updating a field consistently, so I switched to CFQUERY and
updating the fields with SQL commands and it's now working perfectly. I
wasn't using any session or client variables other then those passed from
the form, but this one field (critical, of course) wasn't always updating
using CFUPDATE. Sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldn't. Hitting
the refresh button a few times would occasionally update the field. Has
anyone else come across something like that? TIA, Keith

Dave,

 I encountered a problem on Friday where a user continued to see an old
page,
 even after I had updated it. I realize this has to due with the users
cache,
 but am wondering if anyone knows of a way/command to clear the cache
 or prevent a site from caching. Any help is appreciated

To stop a page from being cached by a users browser you need to use the
following HTML meta tags in your pages :

META http-equiv='expire' content='0'
META http-equiv='pragma' content='no-cache'

I suspect that if the user has set their internet options to never check
for page changes then you will be a bit stuck, but any of the other settings
should pick up the addition of these tags and clear their cache or at least
force their browser to load a new copy of the page.

From: Jim Davis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

After spending way too much time in the past few weeks defending CF from
utterly silly claims I've decided to create a web site to collect and
present information about it.

As Cfers we are all generally hit with statements like:

+) CF isn't an enterprise-capable platform.
+) CF is just a content management solution.
+) CF isn't a standard like Java.
+) Why bother with CF when ASP, JSP and PHP are free?
+) CF lacks industry support so it'll just go away soon.

...and many others.

cfAdvocacy.org will be a site to address these myths and reasonably compare
CF to other solutions.

I've done a skeleton site (it's up at www.cfadvocacy.org).  What I'm looking
for now is both feedback on that site (suggestions for needed content areas
and so forth) and people willing to help me populate the site with
information.

I especially could use people good with multiple languages to do the
comparisons.

The goal of the site will be honest, clear reporting on CF as a solution.
The site will be ever respectful of other solutions and views. In effect we
will be giving CFers the tools and support they need to argue CF's case
intelligently and clearly.

You may contact me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you like.

Comments, suggestions, criticisms?

I am using ColdFusion 5 Enterprise Edition. I have 2 separate oracle
databases that cannot communicate to each other, but the web server can
communicate to them individually. I am pulling back data from to queries as
such.

Query 1:

Machine1 null   Loc1
Machine2 null   Loc2
Machine3 null   Loc3
Machine4 null   Loc4

Query2
null   Machine1 Loc1
null   Machine3 Loc3
null   Machine4 Loc4
null   Machine5 Loc5

I am trying to get a union query with nested selects to work as such

Select * from Query1 where Q1MachineName not in (Select Q2MachineName from
Query2)
UNION
Select * from Query2 where Q2MachineName not in (Select Q1MachineName from
Query1)

So I end up with

Machine2 null   Loc2
null   Machine5 Loc5

The problem is, when I run the union query above, I get the error
Query Manipulation Error Code = 0
Can't find symbol: select

Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,
Rob Edwards

Hi,

I'm planning on starting up a company just for extra cash to put food on
the table. I would be doing web development, Publishing print and

I'm finding it difficult to come up with a company name that has the
word media in it and having the same URL.

Any ideas?

OT: Stupid SQL Problem (in oracle)

2002-09-10 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)

I need some way to convert a word into a number.

I know I've done it once before, but I can't remember what I did.

For example, I have a query that will return something like the following:

Machine1 Running
Machine2Running
Machine3Offline
Machine4Running
Machine5Offline
Machine6Unknown

I want to get some result like this:

Running OfflineUnknownTotal
3 2 1   6

I know it has something to do with a sum and translating Running into 1,
Offline into a 1 and Unknown into a 1,  I just can't remember how I did
it.

This is an oracle 8i system I'm working with.

Thanks,

Slightly OT: CFQuery, Oracle and Limiting rows

2002-08-28 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)

I have a query that returns about 5000+ rows of data. Currently it takes
about 51 seconds to execute (it's a very complex query). I'm only
displaying 100 records per page using start and end rows in a cfloop. The
problem is that the query gets executed every time I go to a page and it
take 50 seconds or so each time. I know I can use MAXROWS in my cfquery tag
to limit the return to 100 rows, but that will only get me the first 100.
Does anyone know how to set it up so I can get the second 100, or third or
fortieth? I would guess this needs to be done in oracle instead of CF, but
there may be a custom tag I don't know about. (About the data: There is no
iterator or counter on the rows so I cannot do a select where rowid between
1 and 100 or 101 and 200 and so on. Each row has a unique value in it, and
can be added to or deleted from at any time. Also, the data needs to be
real-time so caching a query is out of the question as well.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My phone is ringing off the
hook with complaints of the slow response.

RE: Slightly OT: CFQuery, Oracle and Limiting rows

2002-08-28 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)

I've got code that does that already. (thanks for the offer anyway). my
problem is that when I click the button to go to the next one hundred, the
cfquery still returns 5000+ records but the cfloop goes to start row 101 and
end row 200.

I'm looking at possibilities with oracle's ROWNUM psudofield.

If I figure out anything on my own, I'll post it here.

RE: Slightly OT: CFQuery, Oracle and Limiting rows

2002-08-28 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)

Here's what i came up with (this is oracle 8.i+ specific)

Select * from (
Obscenely long and complex query
RANK() OVER (ORDER BY some_col ASC NULLS LAST) as Row_Rank
) Where Row_Rank between #startrow# and #endrow#

This gives me 100 rows back at a time. I'm still getting an obscene time in
the query so i'm trying to come up with ways to speed things up a little
more. One idea is to rank on the primary table first as a subquery and then
do the complex joins using the where in (subquery) clause so i only join on
100 rows at a time instead of 5000+. Another is to slightly denormalize
(currently i have a complex left between join using ipranges) to speed up
processing.

Some background on this project (what little i am allowed to reveal): This
is a tool that runs on every machine and checks in with a webserver/database
on a given interval. The web server sets the interval by returning a time
code. Lots of data sent in a small package including Mac address and ip
address. Our IP addresses are broken down by building, so if i want to see
machines in a given building i do something like (Where ipoc1 between ipocb1
and ipoce1 and ipco2 between ipcob2 and ipoce2 and ipoc3 between ipocb3 and
ipoce3 and ipoc4 between ipocb4 and ipcoe4) with left joins done on the
between to get null for any areas not in the iprange (the above code is
basicly finding between each octet in the ip address).
Yes, this does need to be real time so i can see at any given moment what
machines are where and other information.

One possibility is to determine the building when checking in and inserting
the building name or id in the main table so i don't have to do 4 between
joins for every ip address. Hence, the slight denormalization.

Thanks for all the help though. Currently the processing time for all the
rows is about 57000 milliseconds (57 seconds). If i get it working through
the denormalization i'll post the time improvement here if anyone is
interested.

Assuming you can do *TOP* within Oracle (i don't use it, so i don't know)
and there is *any* field you can order by, the following works great for me
(for SQL Server):

select  top X item_ID
fromattorney
where   attorney_ID
in  (
select  top Y attorney_ID
fromattorney
order byattorney_ID DESC
)
order byattorney_ID

where x = total number of rows you want
and y = total_records - start_row

if i have 1000 rows and want records 1 - 10

x = 10
y = 1000 - 1 + 1 = 1000

if i want 401 - 420

x = 20
y = 1000 - 401 + 1 = 600

Hope that helps.

RE: CF vs. ASP

2002-08-27 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)

Ok, I think it's time for me to toss in my 2 cents (.75 cents Canadian).

I am replying now, because most of this discussion took place after I went
home yesterday. Truth is, I am an ASP developer. I have been for quite
some time. I have been developing ASP since version 1.0 and have written
some Big, Bad A** apps out there being used by some Fortune 500 firms (Not
UPS mind you).

I first learned CF in College (part of an internet development class
covering CF, Java and other things). I thought it was a shame we didn't
learn any ASP, so I approached my professor about it. I explained to him
that I knew I was a proficient programmer (he knew as well from previous
classes) and asked if I could do our database project in ASP instead of Cold
Fusion. When each class got up to explain their code, it was pretty my the
same, cfloop here, cfquery there... I got up and showed the ASP code off
and the quicker response time (this was in the days of ASP 2.0 vs. CF 2.0,
the book we used was BF's Web application Construction Kit 2nd Ed.) I was
sold on ASP from that day forward and vowed never to use CF again.

I started my own business and things went well for a while. Then I had a
major collapse in the market I was trying to sell in and needed to find a
steady job while still doing after hours work. UPS offered me a job as a
Systems Management Engineer. When I started I wondered, Why did they hire
me? I'm an MCSE, MCT and a lot of other TLA's and FLA's. But I had no
experience in Tivoli and very little in Cold Fusion. Now, 7 months later, I
consider myself very good in Cold Fusion and still learning Tivoli (my
project is in web interfaces to Tivoli). In fact, I just finished a major
component using CF.

Having some perspective on the matter, I still think I like ASP a little
better, but that's my opinion. I consider myself almost a VB expert
(working on some articles for various M$ programming Mags.), so I like the
granularity of ASP. If I had the tools of ASP and CF at my disposal (ASP is
banned at UPS), I'd have to look at my situation. If I need something quick
and easy and not a lot of fine control, I'd do it in CF easily. If I have
more time and need finer control of details, I'd do it in ASP. I have found
that most, if not everything that I can do in ASP, I can do in CF. In fact,
I'm pushing my team to buy CF 5 or MX and get me out from the heel of CF
4.0. I think I misjudged CF some years ago, but that was when CF didn't
look that good to me. (In fact, I'm working on some ideas of Fusebox for
ASP.Net myself)

One last thing to add to my rant. I think the code on sending e-mail was
very skewed. To someone that doesn't know CF very well, it looks like it
takes 25+ lines to do what CF does in 1. The code should have been more a
comparison as follows:

Set MyMail = CreateObject(CDONTS.NewMail)
MyMail.From = [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MyMail.To = [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MyMail.Subject = Information Request
MyMail.BodyFormat = 1 'plain text
MyMail.MailFormat = 1 'plain text
MyMail.Body = MsgText
MyMail.Send
Set MyMail = Nothing

cfmail to= from= server= subject=some stuff
here./cfmail

That some stuff here encompasses a lot of code to make the body of the
e-mail when comparing the two.

(*Any opinions expressed are mine and mine alone, they do not reflect those
of my employers)

Depends on the version of Fusebox you're planning to use.

Fusebox 2.0, then read the Fusebox: Developing Cold Fusion Apps.
Fusebox 3.0, then Discovering Fusebox 3.

I've read them both and like the discovering fusebox 3 myself. Fusebox 3 is
a little cleaner and more obvious for a OO Programmer.

Problem with \ in a Javascript/Query

2002-08-22 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)

I have a page that populates a combo box via javascript. The data that is
returned from a query is (quotes included) \\somemachine\somedir\some.exe.
The Javascript sets the value via the code new
Option('\\somemachine\somedir\some.exe','\\somemachine\somedir\some.exe'
) (that's the double quotes within single quotes if it's not too clear).

The problem is, it translates out to \somemachine
omedirsome.exe

(the somedirectory begins with a t, so I'm thinking that it's translating it
to a tab character). When I pass the selection to another page, it passes
the tab and the formatting as translated, what I need is for the slashes and
characters to be passed as that are in the DB.

Is there anything I can do with regex or something to keep the slashes the
way they are? Kind of like PreserveSingleQuotes.

RE: Maximizing/Minimizing menu using span..div

2002-08-15 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)

Set the style of your DIVs when created to display:none and they won't be
expanded. In the click code for changing the div from collapsed to
expanded, you can also change the img src by specifying the img by it's ID.

Hope this helps,

Subject: OT: Maximizing/Minimizing menu using span..div

Hi,

My code is working except for a few things that I'm not sure how to correct.
I've been hacking with this code for a day or two now. When you load the
page the menu are
expanded. I'm not sure how to have them minimize upon page loading.
Also, how can I load a different image (hbar-on.gif) when the menu is
expanded and vice-a-versa
(hbar-off.gif)?

Below is my code. I removed the angle brackets around any script tags.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

THanks

RE: CFMX error - again!!

2002-08-13 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)

I don't have MX, but if I remember my java right, it has to do with the
50 :cfset request.msgString=msg=DBError

the symbol dereferences a pointer reference. In this case, you are
dereferencing a string variable.

Maybe try changing the to a +?

Again, this is code that has always worked 100% with 4.5 and 5. The error
given is:

~~~
You have attempted to dereference a scalar variable of type class
[Ljava.lang.String; as a structure with members.
The Error Occurred in [filepath deleted!]: line 52
50 :cfset request.msgString=msg=DBError
51 :cfif NOT IsDefined(dumpInfo)
52 : cfset dumpInfo=Duplicate(CFCATCH)
53 :/cfif
54 :   /cfcatch
This is a TRY / CATCH loop around an INSERT query, and dumpInfo is passed
through to a mailing tag to email the error info to me.
I can't find anything about Duplicate() in the MX documentation, and nothing
that seems relevant about CFCATCH. WTF does the error mean?! :-\
Setup: WinXP Pro, IIS 5.1, CFMX Developer.
cheers,
- Gyrus
RE: CFMX error - again!!
2002-08-13 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)
Ok I did a little research.  I found that strings are passed by value to
functions.  When you set a variable equal to another string, you're actually
setting it equal to a copy of the string.  When you do the Duplicate()
function, you actually try to dereference the CFCATCH variable (which is a
scalar variable) hence, the error.  Try setting dumpInfo = CFCATCH and not a
duplicate.
This may be something with the way java handles the duplicate function and
may not degrade gracefully anymore.
Hope I was able to help in some way (keep in mind I am stuck using CF4.0
still)
 request.msgString is appended to a URL - that  needs to be
 there for the
 URL to work.
 Can we not have ampersands in CFMX strings?! Is there an
 escape code, as per
 HTML character entities?
CF4 Java Applet Problems
2002-08-09 Thread Edwards Robert (air0rae)
 I need independent confirmation of this.
 We have ColdFusion 4.0 running on our web servers.  I installed the latest
 Java Virtual Machine from Sun on my PC.  When I run a web page with a cold
 fusion java applet in it (CFGRID) I get an error.  If I disable the Sun
 Java VM in Internet Explorer, the grid works fine.
 I assume this is an issue between the ColdFusion 4.0 applets and the Sun
 Java VM.
 Is there a patch to fix this on the server that goes back to CF 4.0 or
 does it only go back to 5.0?
 If there is ANY information on this, please let me know where I can find
 it so I can defend my position that it cannot be fixed in CF 4.0
 Thanks,
