I thinks it's the HTML Edit Source object.

Yes, because most of the really feature rich editors need a MS Office Com
object. I think it's actually Word's Com.

Some also rely on the IE RichText (I think it's called that) object built
into the browser. These don't popup the MS Office install prompt. It's
included with IE.

When I tried to do the demo, MS office installation started up like it
needed to install some components for the demo. Canceling the installation,
the demo still worked OK. I have noticed the same issue with Siteobjects and
one other editor. Anyone know the technical reason this happens?

SOT: FeedDemon by Nick Bradbury

2003-07-14 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
Nick Bradbury, legendary creator of HomeSite and TopStyle (both of which are
included with Dreamweaver MX) has a new (and extremely useful product) in
the works.

It's called "FeedDemon" and, despite still being a beta product, is an easy
to use RSS news aggregator.

Well most of these, if not all issues, are being addressed by beta testers
for the next release so hang in there and don't give up on MX just yet. The
install file is large because of all the new bits and pieces that have been
released since MX first shipped.

Holy cow... thats a very scary prospect. Obviously an SSL connection is the
first step. Then...

Encrypt the data. Don't rely on either CF or mySQL's encryption if you can
all possibly avoid it. My personal favorite encryption method is
cfx_textcrypt from http://perthweb.developer.com.au but I'm sure others on
the list have favorites of their own.

And as soon as you can get those cc numbers off the server, do so. Remember
you have to ensure the integrity of the transaction throughout, so if you
are planning on transferring to a local db then *that* connection -- be it a
brute force ftp copy (possible under mysql but ugly) or a local cf server
pulling data off the live box via a remote odbc connection -- has to also be
ssl-secured.

As Damon pointed out earlier today, one of the mm.com production

RE: Verity Issues

2003-04-01 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
I think you need to append "_k2" to the collection alias, eg:

[Coll-0]
collPath=f:\cfusionmx\verity\collections\abcb_office\file
collAlias=ABCB_Office_K2
topicSet=
knowledgeBase=
onLine=2

Hope that helps

I am trying to use verity K2 server and am not having any luck. I
currently had a collection named fa_Suppliers with the path
/opt/coldfusionmx/verity/collections/fa_Suppliers/. So I editted the ini
file to read as follows

[coll-0]
collPath=/opt/coldfusionmx/verity/collections/fa_Suppliers/custom
collAlias=faSuppliers
online=2

I started and stopped the verity server.

I then use the cfsearch tag as follows

But I get the error "An error occurred while accessing a Verity
collection." and in the administrator, it shows no collections
registered. Any help on this would be awesome!

SOT: Flash Communication Server MX 1.5 now available

2003-03-27 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
Macromedia today announced the immediate availability of Macromedia(r)
Flash(TM) Communication Server MX 1.5, including key functionality to extend
its position as the premier platform for enabling compelling, interactive,
rich media audio/video applications such as on-demand video, live event
broadcasts, webcam chat, and recorded video messaging. Macromedia Flash
Communication Server MX 1.5 adds key features requested by customers to
further enterprise deployment compatibility including: support for HTTP
Tunneling, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), Linux, and MP3s; enhanced audio
support and administration; and a new, improved model for adding capacity.
For more information on the update, available for download today, go to
http://www.macromedia.com/go/commserver/

No word on an upgrade for users of version 1.0 (which we only received last
week!).

A "Developer" edition is also now available rather than the previously
available 30-day trial. I've setup a couple of applications and it literally
takes five minutes and a single line of code to get working. Masterful
stuff, MM!

Mac OS X - Jrun 4/CFMX installation

2003-03-27 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
I'm going to attempt to install CFMX for Mac OS X (again!). I'm no Mac
expert but since noone else is using this lovely PowerBook G4 Titanium I'd
thought I'd give a whirl. It's a waste of our Studio MX for Max OS X license
otherwise.

If I get stuck is there anyone in Canberra (Australia) who has installed it
successfully themselves? I'm not even sure if the G4's ship with a web
server installed.

Thanks!

I accidentally undocked the 'Resources Window" and can't figure out how to
dock it. I use CF Studio 5 at work and all you have to do is to drag the
window and it will dock anywhere that you wish. But, HomesSite+ doesn't
offer this option. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: CFMX Administrator Page won't open

All the other CF sites on the box work fine. When I copied the CFIDE
directory to another site on the same box it seems to run okay, but not
within the root.

http://localhost/CFIDE/Administrator/index.cfm it says file cannot be found
when the file is clearly right there. In IIS (5), the Documents tab has
index.cfm as one of the possible home pages for the default Site and the
Default site is running. The JRunScripts directory appears in the default
root as well as all the other site roots. I ran the IIS Connectors batch
after adding the most recent sites as well.

Is it fine for me to run the CF Admin from within another domain instead of
the default or do I need to uninstall and reinstall everything?

Thanks,
Charles

I'm trying to connect to an Access 2000 database on our network. The file
is on a file server in the same domain as our Intranet. I have the
ColdFusion MX app server logging in as my own domain account, which has full
access to the database. Connecting to local databases works fine. The
database has no security on it- it can open for anybody. I'm using the
Microsoft Access driver provided with ColdFusion MX. I'm running CFMX

verifying the database, and it is happening for all network Access
databases:

That'll let you access the rest of the site without flash, but not the
download page. just get a redirect to the
'flash_app_requirements.html',
which says you have to have JS1.2 and Flash 6.0.65.0+. Tons of fun for
servers without a GUI to install flash into. Anyone from MM have a
suggestion?

FYI: Above and beyond the call of duty

2003-03-12 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
>>

I was on the phone to Mike (long distance) for quite a while - never thought
to tell him to install CFMX as standalone (I'm running it fine with MX).
Once again Dave Watts has saved someone's sanity...

<<

I'm sure you're all pretty well sick of my problem, and to tell the
truth, so am I. But you'll be glad to know it's finally ended. Not
solved, but with the amazing help of Dave Watts from CF-TALK, we've made
a workaround and its no longer a problem for me.

The problem:

Jrun is just not doing what it should. When I try to get CFMX to
connect to IIs the jrun server (which is definitely running) can't be
found by the gui to connect to it. Everything I've tried, Chris Kief
has tried, and Dave Watts has tried has failed to make this jrun
connection work.

The Solution:

Last night, for about 4-5 hours, Dave Watts from Figleaf Software
connected to my desktop in a VNC session and we tried one thing after
another. Or more accurately, he did one thing after another while I
watched. Dave is an extraordinarily generous man, and apart from the
obvious expert knowledge and problem solving skills that are so familiar
on CF-TALK, he gave up time to help me, and when it got difficult, he
didn't give up. When I gave him the chance to get out and say "Good
luck" he persisted and kept on helping. I am very indebted to him and
we are very lucky to have such a person in the ColdFusion community.

The answer was staring me in the face the whole time, and I was too
close to it to see. IT seems really stupid now, but it was like a light
going on. Suddenly, in a burst of inspiration, a question arose ... DO
I REALLY NEED TO USE IIs? I know it seems stupid from this perspective
but it had never occurred to me before that I mightn't need IIs, and it
didn't occur to Dave to ask why I needed IIs. But I can't think of a
reason why I need it.

SO the solution: Don't use IIs. LOL!!! Yes, the CFMX web server isn't
as sexy, and can't use WinXP authentication, and to create virtual
directories I have to edit a xml file, but it works fine. So I'm doing
without IIs, and the problem, while it hasn't gone away, it doesn't
matter any more.

One day I'll rebuild my WinXPPro and I guess I'll have another go at
installing it all then, but in the mean time I'm past the obstacle and
moving on.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions, help and advice, and for giving a
damn.

Now I'll shut up for a while.

Cheers,
Michael Kear

Thanks for your suggestion.

What would be the point of it? I'm sorry but I don't see the reason.
Can you elaborate a little for me?

I have two computers in my company. Only two. It's a one-person
company. The other computer is really small and old. It would be
really stretched to run the server at all, let alone do anything with
it. (Plus my servers which are production servers and I'm not going to
go tinkering about with those unless I know what I'm doing) I need it
on this box.

Cheers,

I tried what Dave suggested, and also some suggestions from my CFUG
list, and still had no luck. In desperation I changed the .cfm files to
.html and voila! search results started appearing.

So now I don't know what to do.. these files are static content, but
they need to be .cfm because there's some tricky stuff going on with the
layouts etc. Has anyone come across something like this before? Is there
something specific in the CF code that causes Verity to ignore it?

Subject: Problems with session variables getting mixed for 2 different users
of office application

Hi, all.

I've got a problem with an application I built for an office.
The Cold Fusion, browser-based app performs all their main office
functions. The hardware setup is an office server hooked up with 2
workstations.

The app is on the server, of course, and both workstations access the app
through Internet Explorer. When both office workers are working on the app
and access the client account area simultaneously, which assigns the
ClientID to a session variable,
they both end up with the same Client on their screens. The
Session.ClientID variable
is being redefined when they are both using the Client account area.

I'm using Windows 2000 server and CF 4.5.2.
I recently went through the entire app and locked all the variables.

First, I thought that each browser would establish its own session and the
"bleeding"
of variables wouldn't occur under these circumstances. Is this happening
because
they are accessing the app through their browsers directly to the server
through the LAN
rather than through the Internet?

Solutions:

I thought perhaps I could create an APPLICATION name that is unique for each
user of a workstation. Like CFAPPLICATION
Name="RCHNetwork#variable_picked_up_from_computer_being_used#",
or something to that effect that would allow each user to have a unique
Application name and
solve the problem that way. Would that work? If so, what are the
possibilies for values to use
in the CFApplication name?

Another approach might be to duplication the application in separate folders
for each user
and have one using a hard-coded CFAPPLICATION Name such as
Name="RCHNetworkUser1" for the
first workstation, and Name="RCHNetworkUser2" for the second application.
Would this solve the problem of sharing variables?

I can't believe I'm just now running into this problem this late in
development. Unfortunately,
I develop on a single workstation connected to my server, rather than with
2, so I haven't run
into this problem before...

Ideas?

Thanks for any help anyone will give!

Rick

RE: msft taking over macromedia

2003-03-02 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
Exchange is about as good as they come. They use it here. Unfortunately,
from a developer's point of view, it can be frustrating when writing
applications that send/receive email. Our ColdFusion server is hosted
remotely and is proving to be very good at expediently sending out
application generated emails. At my end (the Exchange end) it can take
anything up to an hour to receive the message if I'm sending them to myself
for testing purposes.

Quite frustrating. I suppose I could always use HoTMaiL :)

We missed you at the MXDU too Sean!

It's a reasonable (and obvious) solution for a worldwide company with
over 1,000 staff who need to coordinate email, calendars and tasks. Not
that it's relevant, but we used to use a simple smtp/pop system for
email and Meeting Maker for calendars... it should be obvious that
Exchange represents a more coherent corporate solution.

My previous company was about 150 staff in two locations (London, UK
and Redwood Shores, CA) and we used MS Exchange too - with the primary
server in the UK and the secondary server in the US. I administered the
US server. Everyone here knows what I think of Windows and Microsoft
software in general(!) but it was a piece of cake to administer
Exchange, even in the dual server, transatlantic environment.

I have a question for Sean, how much of MM's web site is running on CFMX
using CFCs? I imagine that is a reasonable yardstick, as MM's site must be
fairly busy.

Sean,

We'll be releasing FB4 pretty soon now. We chose not to base it on CFCs
{although one can easily use CFCs with it as well as CF5, ASP, PHP and JSP).
To answer your question, our thinking is as follows: CFCs are not ready for
the big time.

The reasons why have been discussed and debated for literally months by tons
of people on the various lists. We've also spent months tinkering with FBMX
based on CFCs and realized that everytime we plugged one Macromedia hole,
another one appeared. We're glad that some people are out having some
whatever type of success they've enjoyed with them, but we don't feel we
can release a new FB standard based on them unless and until Macromedia
makes CFCs work to such a point that they are more than just effectively
structures with UDF's attached to them. Nor are we prepared to recommend to
the Fusebox community that they are the way to go. Otherwise we will only
turn CFCs' problems into Fusebox's problems. With CFCs one effectively gets
most of the headaches of objects with almost none of the benefits -- and
that's the heart of the issue, isn't it: if Macromedia really believes its
own hype about OO then one might as well just switch to Java or C# and get a
real OO language.

Maybe we'll get to that point in some future release by Macromedia. Maybe
we'll get to that point once New Atlanta releases their BD version that
implements CFCs correctly. Either or both will be welcome. God knows I'd
love to be able to tell people to use CFMX in a production enviroment but I
have no such confidence in it ... yet.

Respectfully, it's not for us to prove that CFCs can be used to build
high-performance scalable systems (would still love to see one). Rather it's
for Macromedia (or CFC supporters?) to convince us, the community of
developers. It's an issue of risk: if we're wrong and you're right, then
all we lose is some time. But if you're wrong and we side with CFCs then we
do considerable damage to Fusebox, which is much more than just ColdFusion.
This is not a bet worth taking.

Thank you Tony. I've now got the data into the database and have cached the
query for future use.

If anyone want the full code to do this once and re-use it across apps let

Its a cute trick, but probably fails against something internal to the
CFINSERT
tag. Once the tag 'views' the form fields as containing afghanistan (the
first
time), it caches it for future use. That seems to be what's going on. Might
as
well just use real SQL for this.

I'm doing all of that and using SSL also. CF obviously handles encryption

Password fields in MS SQL Server 2000

2003-02-24 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
Hi there,

Just wondering if there is a setting in SQL Server to hide password fields
like in MS Access.

At the moment the fields are just nvarchar which sort of defeats the purpose
of having a password field in the database (even using SSL for logging in).

Thanks!

RE: Dreamweaver MX and Ecrypted Templates

2003-02-20 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
The encryption is done client side by Dreamweaver MX and uploaded to your
server via RDS I imagine (I was of the belief that DWMX didn't offer
encryption support at all - as flakey as it is anyway - HomeSite+ and CF
Studio 5 certainly do).

Your FTP client would merely upload the pure un-encrypted .cfm templates.

Just got Dreamweaver MX...but found one terribly odd issue. We have a site
that we are using check in/out on...and everytime I put an encrypted file, I
see it on the server in its jumbled glory.

If I put with normal FTP program...it goes up and remains intact. Anyone
can explain, a setting or shortcoming?

RE: Client Variables - Serious Problem

2003-01-30 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
You need a way to detect if a browser has come into the site correctly,
ideally the home page, so set a Session variable on the home page somewhere.
At the top of your other pages test if this variable exists and if it
doesn't do a CFLOCATION to the home page with ADDUURL="yes".

Subject: Re: Client Variables - Serious Problem

Someone emailed the URL to someone else or a search engine has a link with
the full url, cftoken included.

We have a customer that will not allow cookies, for good reasons. So we
have to use the URL to pass the CFID. We use client vars to track the
session because session vars don't work behind a load balancer without
cookies. (Specially if the uses IP address is different for each request
(AOL, IBM etc)...
So, you will run into a problem if someone emails the URL with the cftoken
in it or a search engine gets it. Now anyone using that search engine and
clicks on the link with the URLTOKEN in it will take on the personality
associated with that token.

What we did was added code to the application.cfm to check for the
referrer. If the referrer is blank, which it will be if coming from an
email, or if the referrer is not my host name, we clear the client.cfltoken
vars. This gives them a new cftoken. This seems to work, however, some
browsers do not pass the referrer. So, we are still looking for an optimal
solution. If only we could use cookies, this would solve the problem.

By the way. Amazon.com also has this problem because they work without
cookies also, so we are not alone.
1: Go to Amazon.com
2: Put something in your cart.
3: Now send that URL to someone, or put it into another machine you have
locally.
4: Now delete the cart.
5: go back to your first machine, and your cart is gone.
So if you email the URL to show someone the cart, they can delete it. If
that URL gets into a search engine, it can cause grief for a few days. This
should not happen often so Amazon is not going to try to fix the problem.
This is why Amazon forces you to enter your email and password every time on
check out, even if you have cookies enabled...

Subject: CFFILE Question

Hi All,

Is is possible to specify in a CFFILE tag the directory path of another Cold
Fusion server to save the file. Basically what I what to do is run an
application on a server that is distributed among 4 different server in 4
different location. The application has a file upload piece and I am bit
confused as to where the file will be saved. If I create a new directory on
all four server say called H:\uploads and do a cffile with the destination
as H:\uploads\somefile.doc and I later go to redisplay the file in the
browser to another user is file on all four servers or just the one that the
user doing the upload was running on.

Basically I guess this is a two part question:

1) If the server is distributed between four server, does the file
automatically get uploaded to all 4

2) If not could I in a CFFILE tag, hardcode a server to save all files to,
I tried this but I get an error

but if I specify:

The file get uploaded, but I cannot figure out if I can specify a actual
server.

They are both CF servers.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Mario

A client wants to run a CF 5 application, but needs a license for the
server. Is CF 5 still available for purchase? If so, how much is it going
for? Trying to find info on CF 5 is a bit of a pain these days - everything
is geared to MX.

On that note, how much of a hassle would be converting the CF 5 code to MX
be? For the most part, the code is pretty basic - cfscript, cfstoredproc,
some loops and conditional logic, but we aren't dealing with the notorious
CFHTTP, and other such tags.

Thanks for any info.

I know I have seen a "smart" cfmail custom tag that automatically does
multipart email and (I think) had a testing mode. We're in the need for
something like this, but I can't track it down in my list archives nor in
the macromedia forums. If anyone knows what I might be talking about, and
where I can get it, please let me know. I'm pretty sure it was a free tag.

Thanks,

Subject: What's wrong with ASP.NET

I'm not sure how many other folks here this bothers, but I thought I might
mention it.

I don't know when or how or why this has happened, but here's the story.

I'm usint WinNT 2000 Server, IIS 5 and have CF 5 and CFMX installed on this
machine. I do a lot of development on this machine, and by and large, I
expect the applications I develop to behave in predictable ways.

ASP.NET has in some viral way changed that order of things.

I've noticed in my registry that there are now a number of references to
ASP.NET and aspnet_* directories.

I've never knowingly installed anything related to ASP.NET on this machine.
I'm not saying that I wouldn't have, I just haven't. They could have gotten
in piggy-backed on a Windows update, sure.

But here's the really big / stupid part of this ordeal.

In one particular application which I use to manage my website at
http://www.turnkey.to ( in addition to managing the documentation for the
application ), Microsoft has for some reason known only to them decided that
this application should have some ASP.NET features. It added the directory:

c:\inetpub\wwwroot\new epoch\tapestry43e\aspnet_client

which appears to contain only 2 subdirectories and three small javascript
libraries:

system_web\1_0_3705_288\SmartNav.js
system_web\1_0_3705_288\SmartNavIE5.js
system_web\1_0_3705_288\WebUIValidation.js

These are not now nor have the ever been components of my application. They
serve no purpose here that I know of. So why would M$ arbitrarily decide
that this was needed here? I deleted them once already and they grew back,
so I know they're being automatically generated by someone else's crap
software.

I've never really trusted Microsoft anyway, but it reminds me to never,
EVER, use my computers to store sensitive personal information, for any
reason or under ANY circumstances. Microsoft / Yahoo Wallet, yea, right,
that'll happen. This time it was javascript libraries -- what will it be
next time? How much of my work will it destroy? How much of my life will it
invade?

Thank you Micro$PAM

Subject: CF Events Calendar

Hi there...

I'm seeking a nice, db-driven events calendar example with some code
samples. I've been through a few that I've found online but I've not been
fortunate enough to find the code snippets that help me understand what I'm
building out and/or how I'm dumping data to the calendar.

I'm not looking for anything really extravagant (although I probably
am)--just something that I can add event, event type, event date and display
those things relatively easily, with the option to jump forward or backward
to other months.

Can anyone assist with a favorite and/or a swift kick in the right
direction?

Thanks,

Russ

Hi folks,
I have an issue with an HTML email newsletter I am trying to send out. I
have a database of approximately 11,000 email addresses I need to send this
newsletter to. Is there a way that I can send this out to about 100
addresses at a time? I need some sort of mechanism to loop through the
database grab 100 email addresses and send. I'm using CF 5 on Windows 2K.

Thanks,
Michael

Try setting the "default" file type for your application as "ColdFusion":

(Site/Edit Sites) click on Advanced then select Remote Server.

Server Model should be: ColdFusion

This site contains should probably be: Dreamweaver MX pages only

Access: RDS

URL prefix something like: http://localhost:8500/mysite/

Hope that helps!

RE: login prob

2003-01-06 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
You would be better of assigning values like dbtype, sql, username,
password, maxrows, blockfactor, timeout, cachedafter, cachedwithin, debug
when setting up the Datasource initially (in ODBC and under CF Admin). At
least that way you can avoid hardcoding settings like "username" and
"password" in your code. You really only need the "dbtype" if you are, say
developing under Microsoft Access (the setting would then be MSACCESS) and
using something like SQL Server in the production environment (the setting
would then be MSSQL) - or catering for both or more than one (the SQL
required to say create tables under Access is not the same as MSSQL or
MySQL).

Most of the attributes you are using you never require unless you are
specifically using a database specific feature or a ColdFusion specific
feature (eg: caching of queries). Try changing you CFQUERY tag to this:

I think you're using your datasource name as the Database name instead of
the actuall datasource setup in ODBC/CF Admin.

This one is really getting me down. Macromedia has identified issue #44972
: The ColdFusion MX Application Server service does not start automatically
following a Windows startup or reboot.

There seems to be no fix with it in Updater 1 or 2, and at present is
preventing me installing it on a server due to it?

Has anyone else had this problem? Has anyone got a workaround?

It seems to work when you first install it, it just seems to fail when you
reboot? even when there has been no configurations added/changed etc..?

RE: Ditching CFMAIL/writing out text files

2002-12-18 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
Have you had a look at "ActivMail" from CFDEV? More:

ActivMail 1.3, is a ColdFusion CFX tag that replaces CFMAIL for bulk emails,
mailing lists, newsletters, etc. It is capable of sending thousands of
emails per minute efficiently and reliably, making it a viable alternative
to CFMAIL. Also, since it is written in Java, it works on all ColdFusion
Supported Platforms (Linux, Windows, Solaris, HP).

See http://www.cfdev.com/activmail/

Jochem has an AdvancedEmail tag that, IIRC, can write straight to the SMTP

Dave, is using the JSessionID a reasonable work around (in Session scope)?
Do we still need CFID/CFToken (or URLToken) to be appended to URL's or

I'm looking forward to replicated sessions on CFMX with J2EE...and hope they
properly add the capability in Enterprise.

As for client variables I still use them in some instancesas to whether
there's a DB hit on every page...it may only happen when client values
change. I remember doing a crude test a while back...had traces running on
my SQL2K server...CF wasn't hitting the DB on every page load...appeared to
be only when I was setting new values.

While this may ease your coding, especially with versions prior to CFMX, I
would disagree with your implication that it's not practical to use the
Session scope.

It's pretty expensive to add a database query to every page, which is what
you're doing when you use the Client scope. Storing short-term data in
memory is much, much cheaper, and perfectly safe if you write your code
correctly.

There is a significant amount of functionality provided by a J2EE

application server that you don't get with CFMX Enterprise. Examples of

this include EJBs and JMS. If you are at all interested in making use of

this functionality in CF applications then CFMX for J2EE is the way to

go.

--

Agreed. However, can anybody speak to performance? I've read the brief that
compares MX Enterprise to MX for WebSphere, but haven't seen any numbers
regarding MX for JRun. You'd figure there'd be something considering CFMX
and MX for JRun are both MM products.

Also, is there any sort of grid or listing that shows what's included in the
JRun engine embedded in MX Enterprise vs. the full JRun product?

Thanks again,

Dave.

Many Aussie developers may be aware of a bug in the ColdFusion Administrator
for the Sheduler feature of CFMX. Basically the Aussie Sheduling bug. I
believe it also affects time zones like our neighbours in New Zealand.
Basically the web based CF Admin interface doesn't allow you to schedule or
manage tasks. It reports errors like illegal time formats and such and fails
big time.

Daemon Internet (www.daemon.com.au) have developed a fix even BEFORE
Macromedia. It is NOT an official fix so you should backup the affected
templates (sheduleedit.cfm and sheduletasks.cfm in the
CFIDE\Administrator\scheduler\ folder.

The fix is available from

Does anyone publish a good, searchable, ColdFusion developer directory. We
were
contacted recently by a potential client, but are too busy to handle their
needs
at the moment. He's looking for a local developer, and I could only think
of a
couple of other shops that he might try.

Thanks,

Subject: Verity size constraint?

Verity is really pissing me off.

I have a client whose most recent news items are not coming up in search
results. I run several queries & dump the information into a central
"verity indexing" table in the database, then index the collection from this
table. I output the data in the table, and sure enough, the recent news
items are there. So in theory anyway, verity *is* indexing the stuff. I
thought maybe the collection was corrupted, so I created a new one & indexed
that, but I got the same results on a search as with the original
collection.

Does anyone know if there's some kind of size limit on verity collections?
Obviously it can't be bigger than the size available on the server, but
other than that, is there some sort of constraint? It's making me crazy.

I'm doing some research on what kinds of design tools ColdFusion
developers find useful when initially speccing out a project. By
design, I don't necessarily mean graphic design so much as application
architecture, however eventually graphic design has to be taken into
account, as well. For instance, do you use Visio to mock up the
interface, or HTML, or just a light-weight version of the app in CF?
Do you use Photoshop? Freehand? Graph paper (my favorite technique)?
How about database design, workflow, and process diagrams? Any
information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cantrell

However, I'm trying to mend my ways.

Do I need to lock my session variables in the following example? If so,

I just did a fresh install of CFMX, it installed the usual 3 sample
datasources and verified them successfully.
I also added and verified the datasource for the PetMarket App
successfully.

Now I restart my machine and NONE of the datasources verify successfully
nor can I add any new datasources successfully.
I keep receiving this message when I attempt to verify each datasource:

Connection verification failed for data source: myDSN

attempting to connect, please check your username, password, URL, and

The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: SQLException occurred in

This is terrible.

Thanks,

I have a sneaky suspicion that is
faster than ... or the cfscript
equivalent... I've never load tested it, but i would expect that the CF
processing engine, whether it's CF 5 pcode or CF MX Java has to take more
time to read in and create the function than to assign a pointer to it.

The pointer is after all only a byte or two of volatile memory lookup vs.
the function definition which is invariably larger, plus time to actually
parse and validate the code and make sure it's not missing a double-quote or
a close-parenthesis somewhere, etc.

Does anybody know for sure? Has anyone done any load testing to compare
them?

2002-11-19 Thread Tilbrook, Peter
MM (Macromedia - not Mere Male) have apparently sold more than 250,000
copies of Studio MX since its June introduction - making it MM's most
popular product yet. Pretty good result really. And if you are considering
upgrading to MX it's available for US$799 until December 31 (US$100 cheaper
than it will be after that).

And if that wasn't good enough MM have since gone on to win the "Best
Development Tool" award at the PC Magazine Awards for Technical Excellence!
Well done MM!

new thread and new message/not new message function database driven and not
cookies or session variable based?

I have the fusetalk software which bases the new/not new on cookies. If you
leave and return from the forum and have not read any of the new topics
when you return they are shown as being not new and read. The users of the

Don't forget that if you upgrade to Studio MX (like more than 250,000 others
