Benoit - First point, if it's beta, why is it on their production site? Furthermore, it fails some of the most basic requirements (i.e. document validity). Moreover, it doesn't even have alt tags on some images. Second, Flash, in of itself, may not be bad design or confusing, but it certainly is not good design to bury flashless design under accessibility. Where's the user control? Where is the alternative design? Moreover, it's not good design to force the download of a new plugin. Frankly, it didn't work when I said no. Moreover, while the organization is better, it's still not good. If the complaint is there's a lot there, check out IBM.com. Finally, have you tried to get to the gallery without Flash or Javascript? Good luck. I think that everyone appreciates the fact they're trying to move forward, but for a company focused on creating web tools, it should be an example. Frankly, There's no excuse. Interesting that you pick google. You can test live without making it your main site. People understand that news.google.com is testing. Not obvious that the www.macromedia.com site is the same. Moreover, the focus of google.com is not the news, it's another function. People can still use www.google.com without worrying about whether or not news.google.com. Whitespace management in MX
Alright, I wrote awhile ago how I believed that whitespace management in MX for linux was not working properly. I did some testing. It sort of works properly. That is, with regards to regular coldfusion code. However, my problem actually stems from the use of components. Whenever a component is called, the whitespace is left in place and is not picked up by the whitespace management. This means that I have to do cfsilent around processing chunks, and avoid using inlined CFC calls altogether. For the most part, that's fine, but there are cases when I'd rather just do it inline. CFMX Linux Whitespace Management problem
Well, it's annoyed me enough now that I have to ask the question. Has anyone else had a problem with CFMX not obeying the whitespace management setting? It seems to work ok on systems running windows, but our new linux server seems to just ignore the setting. Has anyone else experienced this problem? That's not totally true. You can only sort of address CFCs relatively. You can't for example go up a directory, i.e. ../CFCs/ Which frankly, is rather annoying. ** You can access CFCs just like you would access custom tags. They can be put in the customtags directory of the ColdFusion installation. Or they can be in a directory that you can access via a ColdFusion mapping. Or they can be in the same directory as the page that invokes it. Sean - I knew you were going to say that, however, I can not help but feel that that execution model is inherently evil, and does nothing to help code reuse. Personally, I do not see much use for Remoting as a webservice, at least beyond fundamental operations. By building a fascade a CFC is forced to return control to the application developer, in my case, revealing far more information and control than I would like, and further increasing development time for both ColdFusion and Flash. The intent was a black box: the user requests, the CFC figures out how to handle it and returns, not vice-versa. The problem is, in my case, that an outside developer could potentially unnecessarily burdening the server with requests to rebuild a query because an overly agressive application and would ruin overall performance for everyone. Hence, it's something that I need the CFC should control. That doesn't even go to the fact that code that could be handled in one place is now pushed out to every application built around it... so much for reuse. In short, for Flash Remoting to be more than a 'toy', there needs to be a mechanism that keeps the object resident at least for the term of execution. Flash Remoting bug, feature.... in variable persistence
Ok folks, the use of CFC's in Flash and ColdFusion is driving me bonkers.
The following is a scaled down version of a more complicated problem that brought this
to my attention. This is my very simple CFC. It stores a variable, and has one
function to return it and another to set it; I'll call it simple:

Rick - You have to do that on the client side. They are options, usually under printing. You can't do anything about it from the page, at least not to my knowledge. variable[] isn't really a true variable name. Think of [] as an operator
like + and -.
I think that MX fixes that bug.

Let me simplify the way I ended up doing it was a related datamodel: event [event_id, ...details...] event_date [event_id, date (day, month, year), time, duration] Now, the important thing to note is that event_date is unique on event_id AND date. Every day that an even was good for, got a new record. For my application, time duration were not necessarily the same on every day, in which case, I needed to put it in event date. A more elaborate scheme would be the following event [event_id, ...details...] event_recur [event_id, recur_id, duration] recur [recur_id, ...] In this scheme, ColdFusion would be in charge of placing recurring to the screen properly. A recurrence might be: every other week. A duration might be: 12 times. Lots of effort is put into printing recurrence on output. This scheme also makes determining exactly which events occur on a particular day difficult in SQL. Tim - In the first format, yes. If it happens often, then perhaps another solution is in order. However, if it is possible that place or time can change, you may end up with that result anyway In my production version, I think that the only thing that gets replicated are: id and date. Brian - It's a regular expression. It says, find a part of the string that starts with 'pcode=' and is followed by 0 or many characters that are you which could be followed by anthing else. Well, you can have CFScript write the javascript that will do
this. However, do not get the two confused. CFScript is still server side
scripting.
