Re: Millions of Coldfusion sites need to apply patches
Whether to release the exploit or not is subject to a number of different practical and moral considerations. Firstly security testers and testing tools need to have functional and working exploits to validate if their customerâs sites are secure; if exploits are not released they cannot do their job. Every time a security tester runs a scan the exploit is publically published, so selective disclosure does not work. Secondly the exploit contained within Adobeâs patches will be rapidly reverse engineered by governmental Infosec warfare teams, along with various commercially profitable underground organisations. Our intent by using publicity is too minimise the impact of this. ProCheckUp have had a number of discussions regarding waiting a longer time say one month to release the exploit, though this was determined to be unfeasible due to ease of determining the exploit and using it. It was felt that it is better to give ColdFusion administratorâs a tight deadline to secure their servers, rather than a relaxed one and having servers subjected to attack by the above. Personally I know that many prefer that exploits are not published and I understand this perspective; though my perspective is different coming from practical experience of performing forensics on customer sites after they have been âhackedâ using unpublished or zero day exploits. ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology-Michael-Dinowitz/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:336203 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Re: Millions of Coldfusion sites need to apply patches
Regrettably Adobe has seen fit to release only patches for version 8 and version 9. The easiest solution is to restrict access to /CFIDE/, which unfortunately only a slight majority of Coldfusion sites have done. The greatest problem is that the patches can be easily analysed and reverse engineered to identify the exploit, an experienced person can do this in 4-5 hours. My intention is not to spread FUD, but to ensure people are patched and 'ready' ASAP. ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology-Michael-Dinowitz/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:336199 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Millions of Coldfusion sites need to apply patches
Millions of users of Adobeâs ColdFusion programming language are at risk of losing control of their applications and websites. Penetration testing company ProCheckUp were able to access every file including username and passwords from a server running ColdFusion. This was completed through a directory traversal and file retrieval flaw found within ColdFusion administrator. A standard web browser was used to carry out the attack; knowledge of the admin password is not needed. A competent attacker would be able to steal files from the server and gain access to secure areas as well and eventually modify content or shut down the website or application. Richard Brain of ProCheckUp commented âThis is a trivial attack which can be performed easily by a competent engineer; ProCheckUp thanks Adobe for consciously working with us to produce a patch which fixes the traversal attack. By performing a simple Google search for inurl:index.cfm, it was found that over 80 million examples of sites using Coldfusion. Procheckup has released an advisory relating to this flaw, though will not publish the exploit code for 7 days giving administrators time to apply the Adobe patches. Procheckup felt it unwise to delay releasing the exploit any longer, as the exploit is trivial and can be easily determined by analysing the patches. The full details of the vulnerability can be found on www.procheckup.com ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology-Michael-Dinowitz/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:336194 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Date validation inconsistency
Is it expected behaviour that international datetime functions do not accept milliseconds '2005-02-21 22:09:18.347' as a valid date when the U.S ones do? The commented out functions in the example code below generate an error when milliseconds are added. Shouldn't that format still be OK with milliseconds added? I can think of various reasons why this could happen, and can create a workaround for my own code, but it seems like a mistake to me. I don't suppose someone using a later JVM could paste in the code below and let me know if the same thing is happening for them?? Is there some reason why millisecs can't be used with international datetime functions? Am I missing something? Would appreciate any useful info relating to this. Re: CFMX 6.1 reading a compiled CFMX 7 file
I have had the same experience. I have the Enterprise DevNet Edition (multiserver installation) and used "-deploy" intending to send it to a server with CFMX7 Standard installed. But when I tested moving the site I found out the bad news. Have a look in the compiled code for paths. The compiler is probably hard-coding all the paths (even ones which I had deliberately set as variables) to suit only the location of the Web site where the compiler was run. I posted about this a short while ago but no one was interested enough to reply. I was too busy to follow up. Not sure if it is intended behavior for the compiler or not. I got the impression from promotional that I could compile and then deploy the bytecode to other servers running CF from reading the instructions etc. I would like to see a lot more information about this. I would also like more information about how CF generates and manages class files under different circumstances. I recently had the experience of needing to restart the server to get CF to recognise some changes in source code. I had turned off caching in Administrator and manually deleted the class files and I think restarted services as well but I couldn't get a a variable to change that was stored in an application scope variable. I am not saying that I think this is a bug or anything. It was involved situation, and I would have appreciated some background knowledge of how CFServer was going to behave. It would be nice to know the decision making flow for generating the class files. Somebody on this list recently pointed out that if you have a very large number of class files it is faster for CF Server to generate them on the fly than to search for a cached one. I found that very useful. - Original Message - From: "Paul Giesenhagen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "CF-Talk" Sent: Saturday, August 19, 2006 5:23 AM Subject: CFMX 6.1 reading a compiled CFMX 7 file >I have compiled down a CFM template with cfcompile -deploy and I was told >that CFMX 6.1 servers could see it, but it doesn't seem to be working .. >actually it acts like it doesn't see the file at all! > > Can a compiled CFMX 7 CFM template be read by a 6.1 server? > > > Paul Giesenhagen > QuillDesign > 417-885-1375 > http://www.quilldesign.com > SiteDirector Shopping Cart Software > > > > > > ~| Introducing the Fusion Authority Quarterly Update. 80 pages of hard-hitting, up-to-date ColdFusion information by your peers, delivered to your door four times a year. http://www.fusionauthority.com/quarterly Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:250360 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4

Thanks everybody. Have been flat out. Sorry for not posting earlier. The postprocessor servlet sounds best in the long term. The blog was useful too. I really don't mind having a watermark. Re: Menu based in user roles using CF
Your talking about an ACL (access control list). Most mature applications have this in one form or another. They typically involve (in my experience) an access level that is numeric (say 10 for an admin and 1 for guest) and involve evaluating the current user's access to determine if a tab should be displayed or not. psuedo code: if ( user.access GTE 5 ) { // show tab } You also need to keep in mind that users can be curious and may try to access a screen they are not suppossed to have access to. For this reason, you also need to have some security on each screen to redirect or display an access denied message if the unauthorized user happens to arrive at the screen. Re: Logging all users actions...
Hello, I am not sure what you are asking... Are you asking if it is possible to log a user's actions in your application in a DB? OR Are you asking if the DB logs all the database user actions (actions of a user against tables, etc.) in the database somewhere? If it is #1, then yes, you can...you need to insert a record for each event you want logged. This could get pretty large though, depending on how much activity your app gets. I am doing something similar to this for a project I am working oin currently. A customer requirement is to log all actions in the application in the Oracle DB, and provide reports on it. If it is #2, I would consult your RDBMS' documentation. Congrats on moving away from Access! MySQL is great. If you have apache running, you can also run phpMyAdmin -- it is a good web interface for MySQL. If you need more functionality (stored procedures, triggers, etc.) I would also recomend PostgreSQL. There are various front end tools for this RDBMS as well. It is a bit much to take in all at once I am sure, but once you start getting used to either of these, you'll be glad you jumped ship and started using a real database! Re: uisng Virtual Machine software for hosting (WAS CrystalTech says ALL variables must be locked)
Do you have a link for info about this VPS function of Win2K3? I've never heard of this before. We are using Win2K3's VPS function. Each VPS can have any version of Windows or any OS that will run on an x86 CPU. It runs quite well. No problems to report. Not only were we able to give customers full control of their VPS, we also gave them root level terminal server access and reboot permissions. About the only limitation is that you can't install software unless we do it for you. This way, we can make sure all software installed is legal in case we get audited. http://www.cfxhosting.com/Plans/s_cfxadvancedVPS.cfm Dan Phillips www.CFXHosting.com 1-866-239-4678 [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Kola Oyedeji [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, July 04, 2003 10:03 AM To: CF-Talk Subject: uisng Virtual Machine software for hosting (WAS CrystalTech says ALL variables must be locked) Dave This is something I've been thinking about recently. Re: ReadyHosting.com alternatives?
Take a look at www.coldfusionhosts.net if you like. There are a number of US based CF hosted listed. Regards Jim - Original Message - From: "Shawn Grover" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "CF-Talk" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, March 11, 2003 5:40 PM Subject: ReadyHosting.com alternatives? I have a couple of sites hosted at www.readyhosting.com. Their CF servers have been down more than not in the past few days, with no responses from their tech support. Calling them get's me put onto a hold queue for an extended period. So, I'm looking for alternatives that offer similar features for a similar price. Specifically they offer 500MB storage, Unlimited DSNs (though I only need 3 or 4) and Cold Fusion services for $99 US per year. The downside is that they only support CF 4.5, but I can live with that if needed. Any suggestions for something comparable - I would prefer CF5.0 but can live with 4.5. If it helps any, one of the sites is a charitable, non-profit organization. Thanks for any tips. Re: MX Hosting
Instead of shameless plugging your own hosting companies here, why not head over to www.coldfusionhosts.net and add you site there instead? :) We're still building up the site, but there are 16 USA hosts listed, with space for reviews and ratings on each one. For those of you in that small place not in the USA called the Rest of the World, there are a total of 30 hosts with listings. If you're looking for a place to start, it's worth a look. We'll shortly be posting a 'how to' guide to setting up CFMX in a shared hosting environment too. Setting up a shared hosting environment?
Hi This is a request for a how-to guide or hints and tips for setting up a ColdFusion MX shared hosting environment on Windows and/or Unix. I administer www.Coldfusionhosts.net, a search engine for CF hosting companies. The site also has articles on CF related matters and welcomes press releases and technical info from interested parties. One of the hosts listed on www.Javahosts.net, a sister site, recently wrote an article on setting up Tomcat for shared hosting, and it's been very well received. Of course the host that wrote gained some free publicity and kudos for publishing the article. Any publishable material would be gratefully received either via this list, or privately to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Many thanks, James, ColdFusionhosts. ~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?method=subscribe&forumid=4 FAQ: http://www.thenetprofits.co.uk/coldfusion/faq This list and all House of Fusion resources hosted by CFHosting.com.
