For the bare minimum restrict access to the following directories:-

/CFIDE/adminapi/
/CFIDE/administrator/
/CFIDE/componentutils/
/CFIDE/wizards/

Re: Millions of Coldfusion sites need to apply patches

2010-08-11 Thread Procheckup news

Whether to release the exploit or not is subject to a number of different
practical and moral considerations.

Firstly security testers and testing tools need to have functional and working
exploits to validate if their customer’s sites are secure; if exploits are
not released they cannot do their job. Every time a security tester runs a scan
the exploit is publically published, so selective disclosure does not work.

Secondly the exploit contained within Adobe’s patches will be rapidly reverse
engineered by governmental Infosec warfare teams, along with various
commercially profitable underground organisations. Our intent by using
publicity is too minimise the impact of this.

ProCheckUp have had a number of discussions regarding waiting a longer time say
one month to release the exploit, though this was determined to be unfeasible
due to ease of determining the exploit and using it. It was felt that it is
better to give ColdFusion administrator’s a tight deadline to secure their
servers, rather than a relaxed one and having servers subjected to attack by
the above.

Personally I know that many prefer that exploits are not published and I
understand this perspective; though my perspective is different coming from
practical experience of performing forensics on customer sites after they have
been ‘hacked’ using unpublished or zero day exploits.

Re: Millions of Coldfusion sites need to apply patches

2010-08-11 Thread Procheckup news

Regrettably Adobe has seen fit to release only patches for version 8 and
version 9.

The easiest solution is to restrict access to /CFIDE/, which unfortunately only
a slight majority of Coldfusion sites have done.

The greatest problem is that the patches can be easily analysed and reverse
engineered to identify the exploit, an experienced person can do this in 4-5
hours.

My intention is not to spread FUD, but to ensure people are patched and 'ready'
ASAP.

Millions of Coldfusion sites need to apply patches

2010-08-11 Thread Procheckup news

Millions of users of Adobe’s ColdFusion programming language are at risk of
losing control of their applications and websites.

Penetration testing company ProCheckUp were able to access every file including
username and passwords from a server running ColdFusion. This was completed
through a directory traversal and file retrieval flaw found within ColdFusion
administrator. A standard web browser was used to carry out the attack;
knowledge of the admin password is not needed.

A competent attacker would be able to steal files from the server and gain
access to secure areas as well and eventually modify content or shut down the
website or application.

Richard Brain of ProCheckUp commented “This is a trivial attack which can be
performed easily by a competent engineer; ProCheckUp thanks Adobe for
consciously working with us to produce a patch which fixes the traversal
attack. By performing a simple Google search for inurl:index.cfm, it was found
that over 80 million examples of sites using Coldfusion.

Procheckup has released an advisory relating to this flaw, though will not
publish the exploit code for 7 days giving administrators time to apply the
Adobe patches. Procheckup felt it unwise to delay releasing the exploit any
longer, as the exploit is trivial and can be easily determined by analysing the
patches.

The full details of the vulnerability can be found on www.procheckup.com

Date validation inconsistency

2007-03-26 Thread News
Is it expected behaviour that international datetime functions do not accept
milliseconds '2005-02-21 22:09:18.347' as a valid date when the U.S ones do?
The commented out functions in the example code below generate an error when
milliseconds are added. Shouldn't that format still be OK with milliseconds
added?

I can think of various reasons why this could happen, and can create a
workaround for my own code, but it seems like a mistake to me. I don't suppose
someone using a later JVM could paste in the code below and let me know if the
same thing is happening for them?? Is there some reason why millisecs can't be
used with international datetime functions? Am I missing something?

Would appreciate any useful info relating to this.

Re: CFMX 6.1 reading a compiled CFMX 7 file

2006-08-18 Thread News
I have had the same experience. I have the Enterprise DevNet Edition
(multiserver installation) and used "-deploy" intending to send it to a
server with CFMX7 Standard installed. But when I tested moving the site I
found out the bad news.

Have a look in the compiled code for paths. The compiler is probably
hard-coding all the paths (even ones which I had deliberately set as
variables) to suit only the location of the Web site where the compiler was
run.

I posted about this a short while ago but no one was interested enough to
reply. I was too busy to follow up. Not sure if it is intended behavior for
the compiler or not. I got the impression from promotional that I could
compile and then deploy the bytecode to other servers running CF from
reading the instructions etc.

I would like to see a lot more information about this. I would also like
more information about how CF generates and manages class files under
different circumstances. I recently had the experience of needing to restart
the server to get CF to recognise some changes in source code. I had turned
off caching in Administrator and manually deleted the class files and I
think restarted services as well but I couldn't get a a variable to change
that was stored in an application scope variable. I am not saying that I
think this is a bug or anything. It was involved situation, and I would have
appreciated some background knowledge of how CFServer was going to behave.

It would be nice to know the decision making flow for generating the class
files. Somebody on this list recently pointed out that if you have a very
large number of class files it is faster for CF Server to generate them on
the fly than to search for a cached one. I found that very useful.

2006-07-06 Thread News
Thanks everybody. Have been flat out. Sorry for not posting earlier.

The postprocessor servlet sounds best in the long term. The blog was useful
too.

I really don't mind having a watermark. I am only using the CFMX Server for
development. I paid for my software and I am using it legally. I need the
extra IP addresses. We shouldn't have to spend extra time on things like
this. Adobe/Macromedia should have been the ones to spend the time on
inserting watermarks that don't interfere with development. Silly me... I
thought that inserting well-formed a HTML 4 "loose DTD" tag into XML output
would have to be bug...

I do have CFMX 6.1 on RHEL3 using Verity without any issues...not sure

Re: Menu based in user roles using CF

2004-10-31 Thread JT News
Your talking about an ACL (access control list). Most mature
applications have this in one form or another. They typically involve
(in my experience) an access level that is numeric (say 10 for an
admin and 1 for guest) and involve evaluating the current user's
access to determine if a tab should be displayed or not.

psuedo code:

if ( user.access GTE 5 )
{
  // show tab
}

You also need to keep in mind that users can be curious and may try to
access a screen they are not suppossed to have access to. For this
reason, you also need to have some security on each screen to redirect
or display an access denied message if the unauthorized user happens
to arrive at the screen.

What are your concerns or areas you feel like you need help?

Hope that helps some...

Re: Logging all users actions...

2004-10-31 Thread JT News
Hello,

I am not sure what you are asking...

Are you asking if it is possible to log a user's actions in your
application in a DB?

OR

Are you asking if the DB logs all the database user actions (actions
of a user against tables, etc.) in the database somewhere?

If it is #1, then yes, you can...you need to insert a record for each
event you want logged. This could get pretty large though, depending
on how much activity your app gets. I am doing something similar to
this for a project I am working oin currently. A customer requirement
is to log all actions in the application in the Oracle DB, and provide
reports on it.

If it is #2, I would consult your RDBMS' documentation.

Hope that helps!

Re: includes and cfc's

2004-10-31 Thread JT News
Joe,

This is pretty interesting, the init function and different ways of
calling CFCs...is there any further documentation on this anywhere?

I love seeing new ways to do things. This matches better what I have
used in other languages.

oh and PS, I tried your link in the footer
(http://clearsoftware.net/clear/?template=downloads.jComponents) and
got an HTTP 403 Forbidden error.

Re: A bit OT: MySQL resources?

2004-10-31 Thread JT News
Congrats on moving away from Access!

MySQL is great. If you have apache running, you can also run
phpMyAdmin -- it is a good web interface for MySQL.

If you need more functionality (stored procedures, triggers, etc.) I
would also recomend PostgreSQL. There are various front end tools for
this RDBMS as well.

It is a bit much to take in all at once I am sure, but once you start
getting used to either of these, you'll be glad you jumped ship and
started using a real database!

I haven't used Access in years!

Subject: page encoding french characters stupid hosting

Ok

For the last week I have been battling in out with my hosting provider.  I
develop all my apps in French, French content, French in the db tables,
French... BUT my development environment is 100% English, because I prefer
the to work in English... so I develop my apps, they work 100% fine in my
English dev environment... so... move to production, ie, my hosting
provider... ALL ACCENTED CHARACTERS that are passed to the server via web
forms are converted to `y.  My hosting provider is convinced it's a coding
problem, but yet, if this was true, I would have the same problem on my dev
machines right?  I tried it on two separate dev machines, and I just can't
reproduce this bug.  I have cfcontent set to iso-8859-1,  also
setEncoding("form", "UTF-8") did not work and the cfprocessing directive did
not work either

Here is how ti works.

-  User enters accents in form
-  User presses submit
-  #form.content#  all accents are converted to
'y
-  this happens before its inserted into the database so its clearly
a problem on the server or some obscure thing I don't know about

PLEASE, anyone with ideas, I am all ears!!

Gabriel

We are doing it and already have about 20 customers up and running on
this since we released it last month. We are using Win2K3's VPS
function. Each VPS can have any version of Windows or any OS that will
run on an x86 CPU. It runs quite well. No problems to report. Not only
were we able to give customers full control of their VPS, we also gave
them root level terminal server access and reboot permissions. About the
only limitation is that you can't install software unless we do it for
you. This way, we can make sure all software installed is legal in case
we get audited.

This is something I've been thinking about recently. Does anyone
actually use VMWARE/virtual PC for hosting applications on the same
server but multiple Operating systems?

Subject: ReadyHosting.com alternatives?

I have a couple of sites hosted at www.readyhosting.com. Their CF servers
have been down more than not in the past few days, with no responses from
their tech support. Calling them get's me put onto a hold queue for an
extended period.

So, I'm looking for alternatives that offer similar features for a similar
price. Specifically they offer 500MB storage, Unlimited DSNs (though I only
need 3 or 4) and Cold Fusion services for $99 US per year. The downside is
that they only support CF 4.5, but I can live with that if needed.

Any suggestions for something comparable - I would prefer CF5.0 but can live
with 4.5. If it helps any, one of the sites is a charitable, non-profit
organization.

Thanks for any tips.

Shawn

Re: MX Hosting

2002-12-06 Thread news
Instead of shameless plugging your own hosting companies here, why not head
over to www.coldfusionhosts.net and add you site there instead? :)
We're still building up the site, but there are 16 USA hosts listed, with
space for reviews and ratings on each one. For those of you in that small
place not in the USA called the Rest of the World, there are a total of 30
hosts with listings.

If you're looking for a place to start, it's worth a look. We'll shortly be
posting a 'how to' guide to setting up CFMX in a shared hosting environment
too.

Best regards

Setting up a shared hosting environment?

2002-11-27 Thread news
Hi
This is a request for a how-to guide or hints and tips for setting up a
ColdFusion MX shared hosting environment on Windows and/or Unix.

I administer www.Coldfusionhosts.net, a search engine for CF hosting
companies. The site also has articles on CF related matters and welcomes
press releases and technical info from interested parties.

One of the hosts listed on www.Javahosts.net, a sister site, recently wrote
an article on setting up Tomcat for shared hosting, and it's been very well
received. Of course the host that wrote gained some free publicity and kudos
for publishing the article.

Any publishable material would be gratefully received either via this list,
or privately to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Many thanks,

James, ColdFusionhosts.
