Yes - of course in my case (shared hosting) I can only use it on the
development server, not production (gawd how I'd love to run a trace on
production!) due to permission issues. ;^)

This is exactly the reason that I spent yesterday combining several simpler
CFQUERIES into single (but slightly more complex) Transact SQL Statements.
We save just the time in transit, but still that improved those processes by
about 5-10%.

For example I had (in several places in the Session Manager) something like:

Query to see if a key exists, if no rows do an insert, if rows do an update.

I replaced those with Transact SQL "EXISTS" based IF statements. Just to
trim as much network latency as I could from the beast.

It wasn't a silver bullet, but I'm confidence that the application is
generally just about as optimized as its going to get... but every little
bit helps.

Do you use the SQL Profiler to monitor your sql server? (This is not the stuff
in Query Analyzer... it's a standa-alone app that shows all queries
(filterable) as they are executed.) I have found it to be extremely useful in
finding both slow and also often-used queries... some of the quick ones are run
so frequently that even saving a page fetch or two with each one feels worth
it. SQL Profiler can be "fun" to get configured just right, but it's very
powerful.

I've toyed wit the idea for a while... but probably won't do it this time.

The queries involved are just so completely simple (selects against primary
keys, then updates or inserts) that I just can't see much (if any) of a
boost to be gained there. There just doesn't seem to be much bang for the
buck.

Changing the calls as I did (using single statements instead of multiple
CFQUERY tags) seems to have helped slightly (perhaps a 5-10% performance
gain).

It's not a silver bullet, but I'll take it. ;^)

You might squeak out a bit of performance by making a stored procedure out of
it and using an "optimistic update" strategy... Just do the update and if the
record count is zero then do an insert. This will completely remove the select.

(I guess you don't need a sp for this.)

Assuming that you're asking about CFQUERYPARAM, yes, that's a perfectly
sensible question. And the answer is yes, it'll work fine - you'll just end
up with a longer list of bind parameters.

RE: Dumb Question About CFPARAM

2004-12-28 Thread Gaulin, Mark
Yeah, that ought to work. CF can't "see" your sql "if" logic, so it might as
well be one giant select statement for all it cares. On the SQL Server end I
would expect it to handle that just fine.

You could also write a stored procedure for this logic.

Subject: Dumb Question About CFPARAM

I'm trying to optimize some queries and I've got a dumb question. The
current code is like this:

SELECT SessionKey
FROM Table
WHERE SessionKey =

INSERT INTO Table( SessionKey )
VALUES ( )

UPDATE Table
SET SessionKey =

What I'm going to do (this is SQL Server 2000) is replace that with an
"exists" test in a single query like so:

IF EXISTS (
SELECT SessionKey
FROM Table
WHERE SessionKey =
)
BEGIN
INSERT INTO Table( SessionKey )
VALUES ( )
END
ELSE
BEGIN
UPDATE Table
SET SessionKey =
END

My question is with - what's up in this case? Will it work fine
when all of the parameters all nested in IF statements like this? Will
there just be a big long list of BIND variables and will the statement
(INSERT or RUN) use the right ones?

Am I making any sense?

Can you change your character encoding to UTF-8? That might enter the
apostrophes correctly (sans box) and output them correctly.

Or maybe that is the problem and you should switch it to ISO 88...

RE: dumb question client variables

Depends how you use it. If you want to check if available using
StructKeyExists, use

StructDelete(structure, key [, indicatenotexisting ])

If you want to check by Len() GT 0, then just empty out with "".

to have this code...

to just zero the value out?

Not entirely sure what you're trying to do, but why not use
DeleteClientVariable("EmailAddress") to delete that particular client
variable? This has the added benefit (albeit minimal) of one less client

variable CF needs to return with every page request. Then just do an
IsDefined("client.EmailAddress") to check for that particular client
variable when you need to.

Alternatively, you can indeed just do
in
your code to "null" out the value for that client variable, and then
just do
a to check for a value.

You'll need IIS for your ASP development. You can, however, run both IIS and
Apache on a single machine; either on different ports or different IP
addresses or both. Or, you could turn Apache on and IIS off when you want to
do CF stuff, then turn IIS on and Apache off when you want to do ASP stuff.

Alternatively, you might just get a Win2K Server license and use that
instead, if you really need to closely mirror your production Win2K Server
environment.

Re: [Follow up] Really Dumb question help??

2000-12-02 Thread Michael Thomas

Ive only ever used that method when posting a form to a processing page &
having the page throw one of my server-side validation routine errors. When
an error is encountered I include the original form below my validation
routines, on the validating page.

To preserve what the user already entered, instead of the values defaulting
back to normal. When a checkbox is present I use that same checkbox method
with one exception. Heres the code I use to check to see if the checkbox wuz
checked or not:

Then I can check the checkbox on the original form page or not depending on
if the user checked it before the error occured when posting the form. You
have the rest of my code that I use to do this in my last post.

HTH,
Mike

Re: Dumb question

2000-11-17 Thread Michael Thomas

The list is right in using the URLEncodeFormat() function. Furthermore no
one mentioned the POSIX reference to a space. This doesnt necessarily have
to be used for anything regarding urls but you can use [[:space:]] to
reference a space through the use of the REReplace() function.

Isn't URLEncoded() a better solution?

RE: Dumb question

2000-11-17 Thread Mike Connolly

Use URLEncodeFormat() on your string.

Eg. URLEncodeFormat("My Test String")

comes out as My%20Test%20String

RE: Dumb question

2000-11-17 Thread Jason Lees (National Express)

Ascii code for a space is 32 (Hex 20 -hence %20), but there is a CF is a
Function called URLEncodedFormat that will do this for you, it will replace
all spaces with a +. and the reverse URLDecode.

Hope this helps.
