Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever
I confess, I am still totally flumoxed by flash remoting. I have done a lot of things with CFCs, and I understand the ColdFusion side of it, but when it comes to the flash side of things, I can never find any resource that can lead me to getting even the most simple of things to work. For example .. I went to EasyCFM tonight to follow a beginners Flash Remoting tutorial, having decided that I ought to put in whatever effort was required to get my mind around it. My heart sank when the first instruction related to the flash end of it went awry. From the File menu, choose New from Template, and go down to web it says. Nope. Not on my FlashMX2004Professional. No such menu item. I knew immediately that this was a tutorial written for another version of Flash, and yet again nothing on my flash version would correlate with the tutorial. And so it went on - The first thing we do is include the necessary links to external Actionscript files that enable Flash Remoting. but no clue given about including .. WHERE? This has been teh case with all the tutorials I've tried to follow in the past, and the three books I have, bear little relationship to the version I have - a fully registered FlashMX2004Professional. Does anyone know of a beginners tutorial related to THIS version of flash? There are so many differences between one version and another - nothing seems to be in the same place twice when I look. I've learned from experience that you can enter stuff into flash but unless you have previously clicked the right frame and the right layer within the frame, nothing works. So for a tutorial to be any use to beginners, it has to give that information too. Simply saying include the necessary links is quite useless to a beginner (well this beginner anyway). I once tried to get help through the flash lists, but they did the same thing. They tried their hardest to be helpful, but because they all know what to do, they forget to include the most basic information that isnt obvious to people like me who havent even got the simplest most elementary flash things to work. Is it a vain hope that there is a really basic beginners tutorial for flashMX2004Professional 7.2? Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever
Eric, Take heart - we do a lot of this and once you get your head around it it's not so hard. My approach has been to design a form or data display in flash, then use the #include blah.as command, and start coding everything in actionscript. From that point on Flash because a way to test my movie. I use Homesite+ to edit my action script files, I have an action script parser and a bunch of help files integrated into the help tree. And I use the netconnectiondebugger and the trace( ) command to introspect the process When I'm satisfied I turn the whole thing over to a flash guru and have him add animation and widgets etc. It's figuring out how to get rid of all the helpful panels and visual aids that is the hard part :) As for your include remoting files you need the following commands #include netservices.as and #include netdebug.as (that's from memory - so sombody correct me if I get the file names wrong). If you installed the remoting components for flash from devnet they will already be in the includes folder for you so you don't need to worry about not find them. Put them at the top of the action pane for the first frame. -Mark -Original Message- From: Eric Hoffman [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 18, 2005 9:27 AM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever Amen. Re: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever
Yes, it does get very confusing very quickly. For the beginner, it's tough to tell where to begin even. For Flash MX there's the AS1 remoting components. For MX04 there are both AS1 and AS2 versions (and if you choose to work with the AS2 version, you have to download and install 2 different things). And we haven't even started using the stuff yet. So I hear ya Mike! So I see you're using MX04. I take it you're using CF 6.1 or CF 7? Which remoting components have you installed (if any)? chris __ Chris Kief Mindflood, Inc. www.mindflood.com 714.557.2488 x211 On 2/18/05 7:26 AM, Eric Hoffman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Amen. Re: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever
Brian, you put your finger on the problem precisely. I cant count the number of times I've started off doing something in flash, only to be stymied about half way through, scratching my head and saying to myself ... 'yes, use that command .. but WHERE? or I dont have a menu like that .. so where else might it be? or 'i could find that here yesterday, now it isn't there? ( I assume that last case is because I had some other parameter different than last time I tried, but which parameter? no idea.) Then it gets all too hard and I still have a family and a life to lead, so I throw flash away for another 4 months until i get motivated to try again. I dont blame anyone in the flash community - they're almost all eager to help, but I think they're so close to the thing they have no idea that someone like me might be totally lost. Not even the examples in the FlashMX help files seem to be working for me. For example (and this is only one example of the multiple frustrations with dealing with flash) .. I installed the flashMX remoting components. I executed the install file FlashRemotingComponents-win-en.exe to be precise, and let it do whatever it wanted. But i can't find any file called netservices.as anywhere on my system. SO it's one thing to say include netservices.as' but where the *#%^% is the damn thing? If you installed the remoting components for flash from devnet they will already be in the includes folder for you so you don't need to worry about not find them. I'll second that. You now have to sign up to look at the archives which were open to all a while ago. I've also not received any posts from Flashcoders since Tuesday, not sure what's up with that. The Flashnewbies list is great for so called simple questions. I've had some really good replies which helped get my head around Flash in general. I'm not sure who said it, but it is true that you finally get what's happening in Flash, remoting included. I'd disagree with Alex S on there always being a better way in HTML. Sometimes you need to get content into Flash and I'd go for remoting over LoadVars. XML has proved useful in the past and the webservices in the lastest Flash release has also shown to be useful. I guess it comes down to what's needed for the job. Mike, A useful first tutorial to Flash Remoting is Ben Forta's article in CFDJ titled, Data Entry Reformed: http://www.sys-con.com/coldfusion/article.cfm?id=528 For something a little more advanced our CFUG had Craig Boyles, one of the developers at MetaSurge, show us how to create a basic add-edit-delete example using Flash remoting. http://www.coldfusion.org/downloads/MMCFUG_FlashWebService.zip It's still not easy or intuitive for a CF'er to use Flash but it is do-able. Mike, It's really not as hard as you think! The chattyfig list really is more ppl using php with amfphp then actual MM remoting which is really different. Once you get it down, man its amazing what you can do! not to mention fast as hell! I agree with Dave Watts, get the book flash mx prfoessional 2004 for server geeks, friggin great book! I got my copy for free thru my local cfug, I just have to write a book report on it and send to publisher. communitymx.com has a few articles on it as well. I'd suggest the one i help Paul Newman do Case Study: Using the New Flash Remoting Classes the result can be seen here http://www.jamwerx.com/authors/authors.html pretty simple app, took me about 45 mintutes to do, then i gave it to paul and he switched the remoting classes to the newer version 2 ones. It's fairly simple, make a cfc that gets the cmx authors and populates a listbox and on click shows their info in a seperate clip and has an email systen via remoting and a cfc as well. Least will get you going. RE: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever
while that might be true it also isn't. Flash remoting is a lot simpler to use then pulling in xml or a web service, well actually they all are easy to get into flash its after they are in where it confusing. With remoting its confusing because they have changed the way the classes interact but overall its easier just not too much readily available info out there yet. I would even start with just making the connection with the remoting component and then study the code it writes for you, really only takes about 30 seconds to use the component but its also limited too where you can use it. Also look in flash's help section there is a lot of info in there, there are also remoting examples in there as well. communitymx.com has a tut using the remoting component and tom much as a couple of other ones in there too. Despite the thread title, I wasn't talking specifically about Remoting. I was just talking about the whole Flash thing. We do very few Flash projects so each time one comes our way it's like starting from scratch again. And that's just exacerbated by the changes from version to version. -Kevin -Original Message- From: dave [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 18, 2005 2:02 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever while that might be true it also isn't. RE: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever
I definately know!! And my answer (despite charlies bulging vein) is still the same. You get a book for it and it says one way but in reality it's already changed and it gets confusing no doubt. Really the best thing to do is just learn actionscript 2, really you don't even need to open up the flash ide at all and that part will be the same. The last 2 versions of flash were targeted more towards us as in coders, the next version will be aimed more back at the designers, so things shouldnt change too much more for awhile. RE: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever
I feel your pain, too, Kevin. I looked into Flash when it first came out and found it very frustrating and time-consuming to use. And I do computer-based video production all the time as part of my business, so I'm very familiar with timelines and timeline animation. In the early days, it was just too expensive in terms of labor and price to use...customers weren't interested in paying me enough to create eye-candy. Remoting came along and I tried it again...required learning action-script and purchase of the still expensive software...too much of a learning curve, still. And all the while, I'm watching sites begin to make good, judicious use of Flash to enhance sites. I even downloaded Flash MX 2004 Pro to see what changes were made to make it more developer-friendly...good try, but not good enough for me. I tried a less-expensive solution that is intuitive and easy to use for basic animated effects...eye-candy...but for the price of only $100 and very little labor to produce nice results...a lot of built-in effects...just select and apply...(forget all that tweening stuff...ridiculous...) Swishzone.com is the place to check out some easy to use Flash creation software...they even have a Flash video creation program...haven't done too much with that...results weren't that great... I think they do have some remoting possibilities there, but I've given up on that again for now. It's nice, however, to spend just a little time and *intuitively* be able to create some nice Flash movies. And, yes, I do use tutorials and read help files and use books...MM's program is the problem. It's still trying to figure out what it wants to be when it grows up... My .02 (+.02) ... Yeah...the fact that video editing is so easy is the whole point...Flash could be, too, if MM knew how to design an interface...actually, if they would just include some pre-built animations like Swish, then all would be well...(There may be some in the latest version, which I downloaded...but I didn't see them...all I saw was the same ole difficult to use interface. Usually, I don't want to go to a lot of trouble (or expense) to make something, especially some basic, site-enhancing animation...but with Flash, I've found it all difficult...the same way Dreamweaver is...powerful, but a pain to use...*overkill* most of the time. (At least in my market) As far as video goes...yes, it can be quick and easy, but the high-end productions take a lot of editing, animation, etc...but that's ok, because most interfaces have matured to offer a lot of functionality built-in to editors. I don't have to set all the parameters involved in a cross-over fade, I just drag the fade into position and the program figures out the rest. Flash should be able to do the same...like Swish... ok I see what you are looking for:) yes there are a few built-in ones go to INSERT TIMELINE EFFECTS i have 3 paid mxp's I love from red giant http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/flash1.html and on the exchange there are quite a few that do that swish kinda deal. The biggest problem with swish type programs is they really don't optimize too well (kinda like my spelling) and the new flash compresses 100x better. i was just kiddin ;) i agree though a first its a bit rough but then you freak cause its so much easier than making a reg html page (it really is!) The hardest part is getting over the html way of thinking, preparing arranging a layout. 4.5! oh damn!!! we need to have a talk! haha I struggle with actionscript too, especially since I don't know much javascript which is very close to it. This project im doing now for the gf really has to be done in flash so i'm bearing down on it, everyday I learn new things with flash and its truely amazing. most of whats done is done in a seperate AS editor (i use sepy editor), so really its like using a text editor, then i just put things in the flash library but really control the movie form the as files, so you really arent in the flash ide too much, mostly just to compile and test From: Rick Faircloth [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 18, 2005 5:30 PM To: CF-Talk cf-talk@houseoffusion.com Subject: RE: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever Yeah...I see *so* much potential for application design...it's just a steep learning curve... the interface is enough of a climb, but then there's a whole other language...action script... Situation normal. Same as any other time I've tried to learn how to do this flash remoting. Something really simple stops me. Dave sent me a tutorial to work on, and I figured I'd better make sure I have the correct version of the flash remoting components. So I went to Macromedia's site, found the page to download the components (there are now two sets - which to download? I have no idea so I'll down load both). Wouldn't you know it, page cannot be displayed. Again I get nowhere, and can't even get to the starting line this time. No, it says Page Cannot be Found! I have tried it in three browsers, on two different machines. I've entered the URL by clicking on the link in your post, by cutting and pasting into the address bar, and by following links from the home page at macromedia.com. Well at last something worked. I downloaded Dave's zip file again and it opened. I double clicked the flash remoting components and they seemed to install ok. For such a simple thing I feel an amazing sense of triumph. At last I have forced that *([EMAIL PROTECTED] FLASH to do something I want it to,even if all it is doing is installing components. Stil haven't found any remoting core .as files such as NetServices.as or DataGlue.as. or am I supposed to be writing those myself? Re: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever
ok open up flash and see if HELP WELCOME TO FLASH REMOTING is there, if it is its installed the as. files will be in C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash MX 2004\en\First Run\Classes From: Mike Kear [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 18, 2005 9:00 PM To: CF-Talk cf-talk@houseoffusion.com Subject: Re: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever Well at last something worked. They arent anywhere on my hard drive after installing the remoting components. Re: Flash Remoting remains as elusive as ever
This just shows how easy it is to impress me I just got the sample app that Dave sent to me GOING!!! IT's bloody well working!!! For the first time in more than three years, I have a remoting app working on my system. Not MY app, mind you - that is still a ways off, but it's working. As in, I can click on a name and information about the person appears in the box to the right of it. I'm so excited I think I'll have to go and have a lie down before I start on figuring out what's going on inside the thing. Thanks a lot Dave for this!!!
