Re: Best Editor

2000-05-23 Thread Josh Black

What about emacs? emacs has ftp support, regular expression searches,
multi-level undo, color syntax highlighting, etc. Everything you could want
from an editor. Of course, you have to develop on a *nix platform to really
get the most out of emacs. I've found the win32 ports just don't work as
well. Now if only someone would write a CF major-mode for emacs, the world
would be perfect. ;-)

Some other features of it I really like are the word-wrap-carriage return

Robert,

Yes, I have to agree, its almost as if Cold Fusion Studio and 1st Page were
started from the same source. They are very similar, but both have features
I wish the other had. For me the deal-breaker that keeps me with Cold
Fusion Studio are the Remote Development features.

Still, I think 1st Page is an incredible product. I can't figure out why
they decided to make it freeware.

While I am on the subject of free software, I also have to put in a plug for

More then that, Frontpage is so reliant on it's own damn "bots" that it
converts what should be simple things into complex muckity-muck.

And, as an administrator, I have to tell you, Frontpage extensions, and
dealing with them, is the single biggest load of crap in the business; if
it wasn't for the market demand by starters for FP extensions, I'd ditch
all of them and tell people they need to just learn how to FTP and do CGI
for their darn mailto forms..

RE: Best Editor

2000-05-22 Thread Michael Kear

And ultra edit can handle files of unlimited size, search and replace in
the current file or all open files or an entire folder if you like, which
means you can search and replace a string e.g. a tag, a url, a
site name etc, throughout a site in seconds.

Ultra edit lets you record macros that can do anything the app itself can
do. If you do things repeatedly, its wonderful. For example, every
friday night, I have to take a listing from an email, convert it to a
html page and post it. I paste the text into ultra edit, run the macro
and save the file to c:\temp. Then run a dos batch file that loads the
page to the web site. The job used to take me 15 minutes or so using
dreamweaver or CF studio. This way it takes me less than 30 seconds. Cut
paste, run macro, save, hit batch file .. go get a beer.

I have to edit hex files quite often too, in another business activity i'm
in. And UltraEdit has a lot of excellent features for that too - like
search and replace, with or without changing the file size.

You can set preferences for almost anything - fonts used, screen sizes,
whether or not to display line numbers, when to wrap a line, whether to
save in dos or mac or unix or EBCIDIC text format. And you never get
"this file is too large for notepad - open in wordpad? " EVER again!

Cool! Thanks, Dave. In Word, you search for ^p and ^t, in Arachnophilia,
it's \p and \t. Hitting the Enter key in Studio was umm, too easy? Now I
don't have to exit out of Studio when I'm cleaning up old files.

You can actually do searches using carriage returns and other nonprintable
characters. One way to do this is from the Extended Search and Replace
window. Another way might be to use ActiveScript functions; you can write
scripts using VBScript or JavaScript to automate Studio, and I imagine you
could build simple document search routines this way, although I haven't
tried it.

I heard Dreamweaver is neat with the CF addon thingy, been meaning to try
that out. DO NOT use Frontpage, it generates _sloppy_ HTML and doesn't
like CFML very much :( HomeSite is similar to CF Studio, I think.

Honestly, notepad works the best for me. I just copy and paste a lot.
It's clean and simple.

Hope that was enlightening,

A mixture of Studio and Dreamweaver...

Studio has the RDS links to databases, which means you can build queries
without keeping something like Enterprise Manager open - also you can run
SQL on the server to update the entries immediately.

Studio also "talks" to Dreamweaver (well, it allows you to switch between
the two), so you can write your CF at the top of the page, then run a visual
editor to build your tables etc.

DO NOT use Frontpage on a CF template - it will eat your CF code and just
leave it's (bad) HTML
