RE: CF Debugging & CSS Layout

2006-01-15 Thread Bobby Hartsfield
The one you read about ran on maybe 2-4 pcs.

I had to slow the latest one down (still macros) because it was more or less
a DoS at full speed. That said, explain to me how you could get CF to go
faster without killing the server on the receiving end?

Doesn't much matter how many threads you have going if the connection on the
other end can only handle so much.

I know that CF would be faster then some crappy macro language running on
top of IIS. And even if by some magic it wasn't, there is an implementation
somewhere that lets you have multiple threads on a CF page.

If I was really worried about performance, I'd just code something up in
java with multiple threads that would do the job a lot faster. I doubt that
the web server would have trouble keeping up with me, and if it did, I can
always throttle back on the # of threads.

And I never said he was smart... just maybe smart enough from previous
experiences to start logging ips as well... if not, he should be doing it
from now on... if he doesn't he's an idiot.

So I'd be glad to challenge you if you want, but I assume everyone would
agree with me that CFHTTP is faster then some crappy macro language, and
that CF with multiple threads beats any macro language hands down.

I'd be glad to challenge you to submit as many entries as fast as I did with
that method. Not only do you have to worry about tying up your web server,
you'd have to worry about theirs keeping up.

Ps... if he was smart he'd get a damn job. Besides... multiple IPs were used

Will you need to put a hat on your balding head cause because the chill must
be doing more damage.

Yes there was an issue but since in your old age and receding hair line and
memory seem to forget that the problem was a z-index bug in mac ff which
isn't a fault of css.
Crying? Will should I post your 28,459 yahoo im's a day i get from you where
your stolen code don't work and you can't understand why

" Yanno why? Because they just aren't quite THERE yet."
Umm ok Mr Expert who when asked didn't even know how to make a css comment a
few days ago so how are you qualified to make this assuming? The fact is css
is fine and the part that's not in the building yet is you.

After I hit community mx? Ok Will, I seem to recall you freaking out like
you won the lottery (again) about how your css menu WORKED OMG YOU CANT
BELIEVE IT WORKED FIRST TIME OMG OMG and it was you who copied and pasted
their menu into your page, you couldn't even change the colors lol, Bobby
and I got a good laugh at that and all your OMG OMG OMG IT WORKED FIRST
TIMES, which is the only clue we need to know you didn't write it .

" but I'd rather avoid that and drop in a few tables that WORK IN ALL MY
BROWSERS with no hassle"
Ok Will, even when you do that they don't work till you spend 3 weeks making
each row color and this is how you are and half-ass everything, maybe if you
took the time to learn some of this stuff (instead of working on
i_will_never_be_done_with_this_friggin_cart.cfc) instead of half assin
everything then you'd have more than one (1) client and some of your own
knowledge. Oh and I like how you say "all my browsers" lol, now there is
something to look for in a web developer, well hell it looks good in all HIS
browsers!!! Well they don't look good in MY browsers and I'm the visitor, do
you get the difference?

If you don't understand it that's fine but don't blame it on css blame it on
yourself, you can look at the csszengardens.com and they look better and
more consistent than any of your table based layouts so they must be using
that ulta-secret magic>css tag

"with no hassle"
Do you tell potential clients this? Maybe that's why they don't call you
back
Again this is you half-assing it, I can see you telling your clients that
you will only do the minimum to get by but it will look good on YOUR
browser
This isn't a job to half-ass it, sometimes you need to actually spend
sometime doing what's needs to give them a quality site. And so when you
make these sites, well ok your one site, and the day comes that they want
visitors to be able to view it on their Ipod (since i bet the next ipod will
have Internet on it) and now they are going to have to remake their site and
since you half-assed it the first time do you think they are going to come
back to you again?

And since you try to "mock" what I do then how come everything you do I can
look at source and see my(yes mine but poorly hacked) code?

No, I don't remember you whining like a little baby cause your css wouldn't
work right. You said oh I got it! Still broke! Menus, layout, everything.
Don't be lyin' either, like you never cried about it.

Bottom line is css layouts tortured you disruptor! Admit it! They made you
pull your hair out quite a few times. Gave you a headache. Yanno why?
Because they just aren't quite THERE yet. Almost but not yet. yeah you
got yours workin finally after bobby held yer hand, and after you hit
communitymx all night long readin' tutorials, but I'd rather avoid that and
drop in a few tables that WORK IN ALL MY BROWSERS with no hassle.

2006-01-14 Thread Will Tomlinson
In talking with the disruptured one, he pointed out a statement that I think he
took wrong. And I probably wrote wrong.

When I said CSS isn't there yet, I didn't mean CSS sucks, or CSS itself isn't
there yet. I mean CSS support isn't there yet, mainly in IE. It really pissed
me off to make things look all pretty in FF, then look in IE and it's a mess.

I'm done with this thread.

And yes, I know about filters, the delete button, and what-not, but this

Re: CF Debugging & CSS Layout

2006-01-14 Thread dave
Will you need to put a hat on your balding head cause because the chill must be
doing more damage.

Yes there was an issue but since in your old age and receding hair line and
memory seem to forget that the problem was a z-index bug in mac ff which isn't
a fault of css.

The fact is css is
fine and the part that's not in the building yet is you.

After I hit community mx? Ok Will, I seem to recall you freaking out like you
won the lottery (again) about how your css menu WORKED OMG YOU CANT BELIEVE IT
WORKED FIRST TIME OMG OMG and it was you who copied and pasted their menu into
your page, you couldn't even change the colors lol, Bobby and I got a good
laugh at that and all your OMG OMG OMG IT WORKED FIRST TIMES, which is the only
clue we need to know you didn't write it .

If you don't understand it that's fine but don't blame it on css blame it on
yourself, you can look at the csszengardens.com and they look better and more
consistent than any of your table based layouts so they must be using that
ulta-secret magic>css tag

"with no hassle"
Do you tell potential clients this? Maybe that's why they don't call you
back
Again this is you half-assing it, I can see you telling your clients that you
will only do the minimum to get by but it will look good on YOUR browser
This isn't a job to half-ass it, sometimes you need to actually spend sometime
doing what's needs to give them a quality site. And so when you make these
sites, well ok your one site, and the day comes that they want visitors to be
able to view it on their Ipod (since i bet the next ipod will have Internet on
it) and now they are going to have to remake their site and since you
half-assed it the first time do you think they are going to come back to you
again?

And since you try to "mock" what I do then how come everything you do I can
look at source and see my(yes mine but poorly hacked) code?

No, I don't remember you whining like a little baby cause your css wouldn't
work right. You said oh I got it! Still broke! Menus, layout, everything. Don't
be lyin' either, like you never cried about it.

Bottom line is css layouts tortured you disruptor! Admit it! They made you pull
your hair out quite a few times. Gave you a headache. Yanno why? Because they
just aren't quite THERE yet. Almost but not yet. yeah you got yours workin

If that is the case, a quick fix would be to modify the debugging
template to have a high Z-index.

The problem is probably that you are using lots of "position:absolute"
in your layouts. When items are positioned in this way, they are
"taken out of the document flow" meaning that subsequent items don't
even know that they are there, resulting in elements overlapping each
other.

For a really good explanation of the behaviour of elements in CSS-P, try
http://www.brainjar.com/css/positioning/

Absolute positioning can be useful for putting elements on top of each
other, but is rarely a good solution for an entire layout. Because it
seems so easy to start with, many developers new to CSS layouts tend
to use absolute positioning and then get very frustrated.

Rather than using position:absolute, try using floated elements and
maybe some position:relative instead. Better yet, rather than trying
to reinvent the wheel, start with one of the pre-built layouts on
http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=CssLayouts and change it to suit
your requirements.

frusterated by copy & pasting my code, umm well ok maybe I do lol

The debugging isnt the problem, the problem is between the screen and the
chair.
If you don't know how all the css works then my best suggestion to see the
debugging is to make a div and wrap it around your debugging code and make
the div "box like" so it really sticks out and place it wherever you want or
even do a show/hide with it to open it when you need to and pop out on top
like an alertbox, you can even go further and do a cfif and if its running
in your webroot on dev computer to make it available.

Will, you don't like css now because you don't understand it, same as your
feelings with cfscript but once you get it, you get all happy and then can
take a break and glue some of that hair back on your head.

I dont know why u pull your hair out anyways, all do is go ask bobby or me

Built the coldfusion gear site from scratch, all css layout. Even built the
product rows just like table rows, all in css. Things got screwy afterwhile so
now it's a table layout. And hey, it displays correctly!

I'm working on a XHTML Transitional site done in CSS and Fusebox and my
debugging output appears below all other content? You may just have an issue
with your CSS. If you use Firefox - install the DeveloperToolbar

http://chrispederick.com/work/webdeveloper/

You can then display outline your page elements and maybe see where things are
going wrong.
