RE: List slowdown problems and solutions

Anthony,

If you were to have ever met Dave you might agree that it was his attempt
at sarcastic humor. Think he needs to play more stress relieving StarCraft.

You should come over for a "vacation" and educate yourself
I dream of that day ... the culture, the people, the music, the food and
a little of my heritage. My goal would be to do the regular tourist route
but primarily detour to find that out of the way place with atmosphere. I
have a set two week minimum requirement for vacations requiring any travel.
Any tips off list would be appreciated.

Did you here the one about the Protestant, the Catholic and the Rabbi ? :)

Personal attacks aside, This kind of racist remark is obviously indicative
of your level of professionalism. I believe in free-speech even if you
don't. It's funny that you have such low opinion of Ireland, obviously
you've never been here. You should come over for a "vacation" and educate
yourself on this before you make another such ill-advised remark.

|2. "If you want more snappy answers, just keep asking stupid questions."

I have yet to ask any technical question of this list. I do wish you would

I have, on the other hand, provided plenty of answers.

I don't want to unsubscribe as I think this list is a good resource, but

And I feel you should find another list.

I don't think anyone who comes to this list asking for solutions to
problems,
regardless if *YOU* think its ridiculously simple or not, should be termed a
"lamer".

There is a Newsgroup for CF as well that you can subscribe to.
Ask someone on the list for the server name, and hope that they don't think
you a lamer and send you on a course on how to read the list archives.

Ciao.

I'm not going to defend myself or the alterations to the list here but
instead defend the list itself. Those 200+ posts a day you get are from
dedicated people who either know something or want to know something. There
is no sin in that and they should not be berated for it. Yes I know many
questions can be answered by looking through the docs, but the docs will not
answer with experience and in many cases will not answer with examples. If
you have complaints, please send them to me and we'll talk. If you have
complaints, make them constructive so we can build from them. If you have
complaints, try not to insult people.
Thanks.

OK - educate me here (because I am not a network guy). If their (FusionFX,
HOF) DNS is messed up or any other setting, why can others of us access
them? Sounds like a POP problem to me. For example, I have a client. We
moved his domain name from a server in WV to HostPro in Calif. Now, from
everywhere else in the world that I know of, you can get his new site by
punching in the domain name ULR. But, from his dial up, which is his OLD
host, he still gets the OLD site. Now, does that not mean that his dial up
ISP is caching the old DNS or simply not updating their server? Is this not
a similar problem?

It is not a propagation pb that Houseoffusion.com has disappeared from the
fusionfx.com DNS, but that DNS answers authoritatively!! :

dig @ns.fusionfx.com houseoffusion.com any

; DiG 8.2 @ns.fusionfx.com houseoffusion.com any
; (1 server found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:

;; flags: qr aa rd; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0
;; QUERY SECTION:
;; houseoffusion.com, type = ANY, class = IN

but HOF is ok for answers coming from the .net DNS, execpt that
authoritative DNS doesn't answer authoritatively for HOF!! (no 'aa' flag) :

dig @ns.fusionfx.net houseoffusion.com any

; DiG 8.2 @ns.fusionfx.net houseoffusion.com any
; (1 server found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; -HEADER- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 6

;; QUERY SECTION:

;; ANSWER SECTION:
houseoffusion.com. 2H IN NSns.fusionfx.net.
houseoffusion.com. 2H IN NSns.fusionfx.com.
houseoffusion.com. 2H IN SOA ns.fusionfx.net.
hostmaster.fusionfx.net. (
 271941 ; serial
 12H ; refresh
 2H ; retry

 2H ); minimum

houseoffusion.com. 2H IN MX10 houseoffusion.com.
houseoffusion.com. 2H IN A 207.31.122.140

So, if effect, no DNS is answering authoritatively for HOF. Lack of auth
for a zone is usually due to syntax errors in the zone's zone file.

Since there is no response to BIND version, I guess Fusionfx is running MS DNS:

; DiG 8.2 @ns.fusionfx.com txt chaos version.bind.
; (1 server found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; -HEADER- opcode: QUERY, status: NOTIMP, id: 6
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0
;; QUERY SECTION:
;; version.bind, type = TXT, class = CHAOS

Whoever said GUI made things easier??

and hof is not in the roots:

# dig @a.root-servers.net houseoffusion.com

; DiG 8.2 @a.root-servers.net houseoffusion.com
; (1 server found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:

www.houseoffusion.com

Of the dozens of lists I parcitipate in, this is the only one with this pb.

Here is your pb in DNS lookup terms. The reverse query is:

# dig -x 207.31.122.140

; DiG 8.2 -x
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:

;; ANSWER SECTION:

but the forward query is:

   DiG 8.2 www.houseoffusion.com a
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; -HEADER- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 4
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 2, ADDITIONAL: 2
;; QUERY SECTION:
;; www.houseoffusion.com, type = A, class = IN

;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.houseoffusion.com. 8h45m20s IN A 207.31.122.141

You can see there is a mismatch between the forward and reverse zone data,
.140 vs .141.

Here's the solution:

in the db.housefusion.com the forward zone:

houseoffusion.com. A207.31.122.141
www.houseoffusion.com. A207.31.122.141
mail.houseoffusion.com. A207.31.122.140

in the reverse zone:

140 PTR mail.houseoffusion.com.
141 PTR houseoffusion.com.

Only put one PTR record per ip address.

Good luck, I'm available for help if you want some. That is, whenever you
get HOF back in the root-servers.

Of the dozens of lists I parcitipate in, this is the only one with this pb.

Here is your pb in DNS lookup terms. The reverse query is:

# dig -x 207.31.122.140

; DiG 8.2 -x
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; -HEADER- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 4
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 2, ADDITIONAL: 2
;; QUERY SECTION:
;; 140.122.31.207.in-addr.arpa, type = ANY, class = IN

;; ANSWER SECTION:
140.122.31.207.in-addr.arpa. 8h4m34s IN PTR www.houseoffusion.com.

but the forward query is:

   DiG 8.2 www.houseoffusion.com a
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; -HEADER- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 4
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 2, ADDITIONAL: 2
;; QUERY SECTION:
;; www.houseoffusion.com, type = A, class = IN

;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.houseoffusion.com. 8h45m20s IN A 207.31.122.141

You can see there is a mismatch between the forward and reverse zone data,
.140 vs .141.

Here's the solution:

in the db.housefusion.com the forward zone:

houseoffusion.com. A207.31.122.141
www.houseoffusion.com. A207.31.122.141
mail.houseoffusion.com. A207.31.122.140

in the reverse zone:

140 PTR mail.houseoffusion.com.
141 PTR houseoffusion.com.

Only put one PTR record per ip address.

Good luck, I'm available for help if you want some. That is, whenever you
get HOF back in the root-servers.

If you need processor and bandwidth, I'd be MORE than happy to provide! We
use Vircom's VOPMAIL mail servers for our lists (very robust, only missing
digest support), and post.office as well (which does support digests).. We
maintain our own datacenter in-house on a 10megabit pipe connected to a
90megabit fiber ring out here in Los Angeles.

I get a LOT out of this list, and can do whatever is needed to assist. No
ads, no ownership, no strings, no need for recognition or donations. :)

2000-07-18 Thread Diana . Burns

Hi,

I unsubscribed yesterday morning and received confirmation of the
unsubscribe. Late yesterday afternoon, PST, I received many e-mails from
the listserv with the same time stamp. Now I'm continuing to receive them
in batches like this. I had to resubscribe to post the problem, which is
what I'm doing now.

Is this a problem with the server or is there something else wrong?

This listserve is really great, but just generates too many e-mails for me
to manage effectively.

Thanks,

1) While not necessarily a payment system instituted for the list, how
about a voluntary donation system? I know I wouldn't mind spending
$5-10/month for a better list if it helps things out.

2) Seek corporate sponsorship? I mean I know that everyone hates
commercial messages tagged on to email, but I'll take the sacrifice of
"Get free email @hotmail.com" somewhere in the message in exchange for a
better list. Anyone with me?

I dunno, whaddya think?

I've suggested corporate sponsorship before but no one really commented on
it. I am perfectly willing to deal with a text ad appended to the email. I
would be happy to give the list monetary support like that if it could pay
for some of the equipment that is necessary and pay just to generally help
with the running of the list. People do put time and money into this list
and I would rather help them with the expenses that they occur in the
process. It's not like people would have to pay to join-- that wouldn't be
good. But an ad message in the footer that's already added would be
unobtrusive and help support the list.
