RE: Interesting: Macromedia Resource Kit
It bothers me when a company that sells development software has to sell a developer kit. If a company sold an application, like Microsoft Word or Quicken, then an SDK makes sense - exposing the API, etc. But, when the core software is a development product, a developer's kit just seems like another way to gouge more $$$ from their customer base. This isn't directed solely at MM. It's also Microsoft and anyone else who does this.. -Original Message- From: Benoit Hediard [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 12:04 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Interesting: Macromedia Resource Kit Indeed, this is an interesting DRK. Most folks don't have those big pipes. I agree and disagree to this point. Yes many of US programmers may want to download it. But I'm sure most of the new influx of designers and such and the home users may not have the ability. Maybe they should offer it as an option such as they do with MX. -Original Message- From: Len Conrad [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 1:37 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Interesting: Macromedia Resource Kit would you be willing to download 650 megs? Not being sarcastic, but that is the main reason we did not make it downloadable. There is more in heaven and earth ... FreeBSD.org ftp mirrors world-wide have cdrom .iso images of the OS. 550 to 600 Mb per .iso. Never heard anybody, server-side or client-side, complain. I think other opensource OS's do the same. RE: Interesting: Macromedia Resource Kit
Most folks don't have those big pipes. A lot of folks would probably try anyhow, and it woudln't turn out to be a good experience for most of them. 602mb just isn't a good candidate for online sales, I think we'd just be begging for problems. I don't see why this would be a real problem. People download things like that all the time: - MSDN (complete debug copies of Windows, etc) - Oracle Technet (Oracle 9i for Windows is 4 CDs!) - your Linux distro of choice I think people usually know what they can or can't successfully download, and giving them that choice doesn't hurt - you could ship the CD as well, but let registered purchasers try their luck at the download (this is pretty common, I think). One thing about MSDN that's nice is that they have they're own download manager, which makes the process work pretty well. But I'm certainly taking note of the requests for it, and passing that feedback along! Please put my name into the request column. Ditto to dave's comment. Re: Interesting: Macromedia Resource Kit
Mike Chambers wrote: matt, would you be willing to download 650 megs? Not being sarcastic, but that is the main reason we did not make it downloadable. The other way around. There are no books so I don't see why one would even bother making a CD before it arrives at the customer. Of course MM should have some decent bandwidth, I wouldn't want to download it if the speed is limited to 50 KB/s as some other downloads are, but it should only take a minute to download.
