Re: Moving from CF5 on Windows to CFMX on Linux
I started to write a reply and decided to just post it to my blog: http://www.iknowkungfoo.com/blog/index.cfm/2007/5/24/Moving-Coldfusion-applications-from-Windows-to-Linux I didn't address CFX tags though. IIRC, you may need versions of those tags that have been compiled on Linux. If the CFX tag is a .DLL file, you may be out of luck. HTH, Adrian We're going to be undertaking a long-overdue upgrade from CF5 to CFMX 7.1. At the same time we're considering moving from a Win2k server with IIS to Linux and Apache. Obviously we're dealing with two issues - moving from CF5 to CFMX 7.1 and moving to Linux, so we're wondering if doing both at the same time may be too much. We use about a dozen CFX tags, so that's one issue to deal with. Most of our data is in MySQL. But another issue we face is that a couple of legacy applications use Access via ODBC. The databases are complex enough and the applications so seldom used that migrating these to MySQL isn't really feasible. I'm not sure what that means should we move to Linux. What other problems might we expect to encounter? ~| Create robust enterprise, web RIAs. The majority of databases on Linux do not suffer from the issues you describe. Further, you are recommending any Access DB to be converted to MySQL. Access + Linux == hell I went through that on my Mac once, was trying to do local development against a CF5 app that was written to a copy of the hosted Access database. I ended up migrating the database locally to SQL Server and then manually updating the Access file with any changes that were needed before going live. If you can move them off Access then do so, it is not worth the headaches to keep it around. Re: Moving from CF5 on Windows to CFMX on Linux
Linux is case-sensitive. The application file application.cfc wouldn't work in Linux. The capital letter A as in Application.cfc would work. Linux is big in case-sensitive. Another thing you will be facing a lot is permissions. The use of chgrp and chown could be common for you. Ravi. It's been a while since I last checked (late in 2005) but the Linux version of CFMX 7 didn't have an Access DB driver at the time. You'd be well advised to check into that. We had good luck with the MySQL Migration utility, but the Access DB involved was not very complex or large. ~| ColdFusion MX7 and Flex 2 Build sales marketing dashboard RIAâs for your business.
