You will also want to give a try to the RSW e-test suite. I used it on

Call Mercury Interactive. I had a week long class with them and came away
very impressed with their products. In fact they will give you more info

analytical mind can use WinRunner or LoadRunner. The art is being able to

You're going to find that no company, Fig Leaf included, does this cheaply.
It's a complex, expensive process.

Fig Leaf, Allaire, and Segue (the makers of SilkPerformer, the tool used by
Allaire and Fig Leaf) all provide load testing consulting services.

In general, when it comes to something like load

to find good experienced people. I think you have the
right idea in outsourcing. You might be better off
going with a consulting company like the one above so
you get the experienced staff and the tools in one go.

Stress testing CF 5 application?

2002-09-12 Thread Shawn Grover

I need ideas/suggestions on tools to stress test a very complex CF 5
application.

I have used Microsoft's Web Application Stress Tool before (may have the
name slightly wrong), but don't think it will suffice in this case. Mainly
because it craps out my computer when I try to record a script. The actions
performed and/or data posted between pages is done through Form fields, URL
parameters, or Client variables. Pages are VERY dynamic - javascript WDDX,
and using IFrames to query/update data without reloading a page. Off the
top of my head, I can't see any easy way to make the scripts for the MS
tool.

Any suggestions for a free/low cost testing solution that could handle the
above type of application? Thanks a bunch.

Stress Testing & Cold Fusions Limits

2004-12-31 Thread Tony Hicks
You guys have some impressive knowledge.. I think I do too :) but I
admire yours.. I wanted to ask a question...

Where you say cold fusion on a single box really peaks out? I mean
without clustering and everything... where would you say its too much
load? I've been having a few issues but its cfmx related... problems
that didn't exist in 5.. And I want to know a good next move.

Also.. I want to toss traffic at my own site and let my error reporter
run and see how far I can crank it up.. good weekend project.. Anyone
got any recommendations on a good program to... bombard your site with
traffic?

Shawn,

Go to download.com and search for "web stress". There are several free

I need ideas/suggestions on tools to stress test a very complex CF 5
application.

I have used Microsoft's Web Application Stress Tool before (may have the
name slightly wrong), but don't think it will suffice in this case.
Mainly
because it craps out my computer when I try to record a script. The
actions
performed and/or data posted between pages is done through Form fields,
URL
parameters, or Client variables. Pages are VERY dynamic - javascript
WDDX,
and using IFrames to query/update data without reloading a page. Off
the
top of my head, I can't see any easy way to make the scripts for the MS
tool.

Any suggestions for a free/low cost testing solution that could handle
the
above type of application? Thanks a bunch.

Yup. If your registry is nearly full then the chances are that it will run
slow. When the registry is full CF will stop running all together.

I would recommend that you look into transferring your client store to SQL
server (or Access in the short term) as soon as possible and see if that
helps.

If the registry is nearly full, then a temporary temporary measure would be
to increase the size of the registry in the system settings.

Client vars in the registry is only bad because you need to keep an eye
on the growth of the registry. I think that it would be slower for the
client vars to come from the DB on high volume sites than the registry.

As far as jobs goes, I guess it is a matter of looking as I haven't been

Re: Stress Testing & Cold Fusions Limits

2004-12-31 Thread Rick Mason
Tony,

Finding out where an application "peaks out" is a complex question and
depends on your code and the database etc.

Charlie Arehart spoke before our user group a few years back on the
subject of load testing. I also believe he wrote an article on the
subject in CFDJ though I couldn't locate it with a quick search.

I've actually used one of the tools he spoke of that night by a
company called OpenDemand and I believe they have a free web trial.
There is also a free load tester from Microsoft and another one from a
German company.

If you can locate either that article or Charlie's powepoint it should
answer most of the questions you might have. I know that I learned an
awful lot about my application after I did some basic load testing.

Hi,

Check out grinder out and see if it helps.

http://www.anticlue.net/archives/000395.htm

The one main drawback is that you need to have multiple sessions on
multiple PCs, because it overwhelms the local pc's nic card since they
normally are lower end.

The other program that is great for load testing is load runner from
Mercury Interactive. I believe there is a 10 day trail version.

One of the most common issues people encounter moving from CF5 to CFMX
is database driver performance. Do you have the latest 6.1 Updater
installed?

OpenSTA, WAST (Microsoft) are free. We use Segue Silk Performer here
at Macromedia but that costs $$$.

I would say it "peaks out" when it has reached a level of load that prevents
it from having a tolerable response time for new requests. Of course, that's
not much of an answer, but that's all the answer you'll get with the
information you've provided. It's up to you to determine what's an
acceptable response time ceiling, and to use load testing to determine how
many concurrent users it takes to reach that ceiling.

I would recommend OpenSTA (http://www.opensta.org/). It's a free,
Windows-based load testing tool. However, I would disagree with your
characterization of load testing as a "good weekend project". Load testing
is a relatively complicated and non-trivial task, if you intend to get
useful results from your tests. I would also recommend that you thoroughly
read the OpenSTA documentation, which will give you some idea of what load
testing typically entails.

Happy New Year,

When I said a good weekend project.. I just meant that mine is the
type of site that slacks off on weekends so you know, if I do toss too
much, it doesn't hurt a user's experience because weekend traffic is a
mere fraction of weekday traffic.

I would of course test at various times, but initial testing seems to
be a good idea on off-peak hours.

Thanks for the link, google didn't bring that one up for me, but I'm
very interested in trying it.

Well, what exactly do you want to accomplish with your tests? Figuring this
out, and actually doing it, is again a non-trivial task. It's also not the
kind of thing you typically do within a live production environment, for
many reasons - you may actually cause damage to that environment, for one!

OT: Stress testing tools - OpenSTA vs JMeter

2004-07-02 Thread Nick de Voil
Does anyone have a view on which of these is a better tool for stress
testing a Java-based web app on a remote Linux server and/or on local
Windows dev boxes? And why? Or is there a better free tool (eg MS WAS)?

What I'd like to achieve is an integrated approach where we can generate
HTTP requests on the client(s), and record the statuses and timings of the
responses, but also somehow record/analyse what's happening inside the
server (Apache, MySQL, JVM, JRun etc) at the same time. Or would it be more
sensible to use different tools for these two jobs - finding problems vs
investigating them?

I'm looking to standardize on something for ongoing use as part of a
development process, so I guess another important thing is the features for
recording/storing/sharing reasonably complex scenario information.

We're also considering moving to Eclipse/Ant/JUnit - any synergies there
would be great, which seems to point towards JMeter...but OpenSTA appears a
more finished application?

Thanks

I don't have much experience with JMeter, but I do use and like OpenSTA
quite a bit. Of course, it only runs on Windows clients, but that hasn't
been a problem for me yet. You can use it (or any other load test tool for
that matter) to load test web applications no matter what they're written
in.

Unfortunately, I haven't found anything like this at all. Load test tools
don't tell you what's going on at the server, they just tell you how long it
takes for the server to respond (response time), and how much data the
server sends back (throughput). In the case of a performance analysis test,
you then examine the slow pages and see if you can improve their
performance.

You can, however, manually correlate your load tests with server monitoring.
Unfortunately, though, it's very difficult to figure out exactly what's
going on at any given instant, in my experience. Perhaps some of the
commercial tools now offer a server component for this, but those tools are
generally very expensive (although I think they're almost worth it!)

I wouldn't look for too much of a connection between load test tools and
development tools.

Re: OT: Stress testing tools - OpenSTA vs JMeter

2004-07-02 Thread Mark Drew
Nick
I have used OpenSTA a couple of times and it provides very good stress
testing logs, although I must admit I am a bit rusty on its workings
currently.

With regards to the server side you could enable CFperfmon to get
analysis from that.

The problem (or benefit) on multi-tierd systems is that each
application (db, web server, etc) all have their own log files, so you
can spit it out at each stage to see what is doing what. With
Coldfusion (I presume you are running it) you can at least see some of
this with the debug.

I am not sure of good server side reporting tools, apart from the ones
that come with Windows

Hope that helps a little
