Re: [cfaussie] What the ColdFusion community needs more of...

2012-11-25 Thread Dawesi
Those events support the local community, what I'm talking about is an
injection of enthusiasm that non-CF people will get excited about
attending. (not necessarily the same event as above)

In the early 2000's there was a groundswell of excitement around this tech,
just wanting to work out how to get it rolling again. Adobe has the cash
from the product, just needs to put money back into promotion of the
product at grass roots and management levels.

[cfaussie] Re: JB-HI Moving to dotnet

2010-06-01 Thread Dawesi
Fundimenal problems in marketing:

Just ask anyone advertising building a new web system and trying to
use an agency, they pretty much all laugh at you and tell you to build
in .Net or PHP as ColdFusion is a waste of money.

evangelism is also failing at the hiring level... how about a free
breakfast for agencies to 'educate' them on the pluses of CF? how
about doing this every year?

There's very few agencies that take CF seriously because they don't
see that many cf jobs, and the ones they do see are convinced to push
toward the languages of their larget contractor pool.

It's catch 22... fewer developers ~ fewer contracts = fewer licences ~
seen as small fry by local office

Dawesi.

I think this is an important thing. Can't remember the last time I saw
a CF ad in a CIO/CTO magazine. Firmware was great, and Daemon does
some excellent work now promoting CF as does Mark.

The problem lies in the mother ship. Adobe don't even use CF in their
example web apps on roadshow, they use PHP... so no wonder no eyes are
seeing CF anymore. Heck it's not even on the main part of the trial
download page, even though there's empty spots ready for it to be
there, you have to pick from the hidden massive list of products.

I'm surprised Railo hasn't appointed a rep out here romancing
universities in AU/NZ to get it rolling also.

I guess what's also needed is a real showcase site of coldfusion web
apps, just like Adobe Air has... one with snazzy graphics and 'cool'
examples of usage. A site that isn't on Adobe.com

[cfaussie] Re: CF Pages To Display On Windows Mobile Devices

I use extjs to do the layout (core is all you need)... then your pages
expand or contract to the device and you can set min-width attributes
easily without having to have cross-browser stuff. (ie/opera/skyfire).

Personally I user Winmo (HD2 Opera)...

I'm checking regarding the cert - a hunch I had, I have a feeling
that could be the problem as we're getting a connection error only
when posting (we can get to the webservice thru nt login and proxy).

Will also be playing with the CFX_HTTP5 tag...

This is a 3rd party development, not internal DOE directly, although
DOE is running the project. SoapUi is the bomb! :-) I have that.

[cfaussie] Trying to consume .Net Webservice

2009-11-17 Thread Dawesi
I'm looking for someone who can help me connect to a .Net webservice
from Dept Of Education... I'm about to look at the CFX_HTTP5 com
object from the component store... before that I was wondering if
there was anyone with experience with common errors when
consuming .Net webservices.

I can see the wsdl descriptor page in both my browser and with
coldfusion however I can't post to the service without getting a
connection error.

any hints would be appreciated... webservice is password protected so
I can't give it out here, but is test environment, so can make an
exception for anyone who has had experience. I also have a test page
you could drop on your server.

[cfaussie] OT : Bidding On Grays Online

2008-11-24 Thread Dawesi

The finish time of auctions on grays online is DIFFERENT to ebay!
(sorry for the yelling in this, but I feel this needs to be said!)

The auction ends when the LATTER of these happens:

Example:
So if you bid at 5:59:59pm and the auction closes at 6:00pm the
auction will not end until 6:09:59 - there is NO stealth bidding. You
can not bid with 5 seconds to go and win five seconds later. There is
ALWAYS 10 minutes after any bid before an auction can close.

Please don't bid 10 seconds to go, it really gets me really peed
off! Who the heck is A.T. from Melbourne - grr... oh well got two new
CF 8 boxed product for $600 for both from grays anyway, so can't be
too unhappy..

The interface is klunky...

I really love the way ExtJS do their docs... http://www.extjs.com/docs/
Maybe one day someone will take the extjs code from ext 2.x and use if
for adobe docs...

It would also be great to have an Adobe Air version and be able to
select different versions.

Coldfusion & Flex Builder Free for education - finally Adobe gets it!
https://freeriatools.adobe.com/coldfusion/

---

Can education customers including students, faculty and staff get
ColdFusion for free?

Adobe ColdFusion 8 is available for free to all eligible education
customers for learning purposes only and not for production purposes.
Students, faculty and staff can get serial numbers to activate
downloadable trial versions by registering on the registration site
During registration, you will be prompted to upload a copy of your
student, faculty ID or employee ID, or you can upload a letter on
institutional letterhead proving your current affiliation with an
educational institution. Once validated, you will be e-mailed a free
educational serial number for ColdFusion 8. It may take up to two
weeks after the request for you to receive the serial number.

---

How do students, faculty and staff prove eligibility?

One of the following documents must be uploaded during registration to
prove eligibility:

* A valid student ID showing current enrollment
* A valid faculty ID showing current employment
* A valid employee ID showing current employment
* A letter on an educational institution letterhead stating
that the
* individual is either a current student or a faculty member
of the institution
* A scanned copy of any of these documents should be uploaded
on the ColdFusion
* Registration site. The scanned copy should be formatted as a
GIF or PDF file.

---

How can I get multiple ColdFusion 8 licenses for use in a student lab?

If you are a faculty or staff member and you want to get
ColdFusion 8 for multiple machines in your lab, you can request up to
30 education serial numbers for learning purposes in a single request
on the registration site. If you need more than 30 education serial
numbers, you should submit multiple requests.

---

Can education customers still purchase a boxed copy of ColdFusion 8
for education?

Yes, ColdFusion 8 for education is still available for purchase as
a boxed copy. The paid version of ColdFusion 8 for education does not
have the restriction that it be used only for learning purposes.

for purchase for customers who have purchased a paid license of
ColdFusion 8.

[cfaussie] Re: St George Payment Gateway

2008-09-02 Thread Dawesi

Free... nope... I wrote the first coldfusion wrapper for webpay (st
g's) years ago, but haven't been near it since.

If you have a lazy $500 you can get one here:
http://www.pacificfox.com.au/products/st-george-gateway-coldFusion-component.cfm

seems a bit rich a price for such a small component.

Build one and sell it for $200 a pop... If you know a bit of .net you
might be able to crank out a version with that, I'd suggest the C++
api from previous experience (requires registering a couple of dlls
from experience)... drop an e-mail to the guys at Red Balloon and see
if they have anything (I think they still use st george)...\\

2006-06-02 Thread dawesi

What is your timeframe?

I'm working on a new version of our ticketing portal
"digitaltickets.net" which will allow blacklabelling so that your
client can run their events from that. It's based on the ticketing
system I built in 2000 around Australia's largest conference (22,000+
delegates, 3000+ volunteers, etc)

As for custom reports, our panel allows you to pull any web page into
the frameset, or we could host the reports on our server
(cfml/asp/asp.net).

let me know your thoughts and timeframes off-list.

Cheers,
Chris Dawes

[cfaussie] Re: Coldfusion Developer Melbourne

2006-05-09 Thread Dawesi
Dale,Money isn't everything bro. At this point flexibility is my biggest hurdle. There's plenty of work in Australia at the moment. Heck there is a CF7 install contract going in Brissy. Very tempting. There's plenty of work out there, not all of it is on the boards either.
$60k contract and a four day week and I'm sold. I'll move to Melbourne tommorrow. The market is sitting around $70-80k for a senior CF/SQL analyst programmer. That's what I've found lately. Cheers,Chris Dawes

Maybe you should make the
pay rate a little higher.Say if it was $70+ you would get some bites, $80+ you
would have my interest, $90+ I would come to an interview.

Pretty much all of these apps have a SQL Server background. You would need to read the licence to 'how' you are allowed to access these databases.Cheers,Chris DawesOn 5/5/06,
