[cfaussie] Re: CF8 free upgrade (buy cfmx7 now or wait?)

2007-07-26 Thread Dale Fraser

Robin,

I agree with you, but if they release on 8/8 then people (including myself)
will think that this was always the date and they worked to this date and
not when the software was necessarily ready. I don't have a problem with
this, it's a deadline and if you don't set deadlines then the release can be
dragged back and back for a long time.

We will just have to wait and see what Wednesday week holds. Mind you there
are probably people on this list that know already.

Dale Fraser

Hey Dale,

Remember when Macromedia didn't have public betas and was really
tight lipped about its release timetables etc? In the old days Tim
Buntel wouldn't have been able to say |Middle| of 2007 at WebDU, and
the first you would have heard about a new release would be... when
it was released.

As you know you cant fix a software release date without compromising
quality (mumble MX2004 mumble) and I'd rather see a release up to a
few months late than released with bugs, particularly for a server
product. You're right that it probably hurts sales, but that's
always the tradeoff for software companies being more open about
releases.

And everyone remember, license subscriptions were created precisely
for this reason, to allow you to buy CF at any time without having to
worry about release timing.

So, we can't have it both ways, but I'm sure you and the rest of the
CF community would agree that the current situation is as Jack Aubrey
would say the lesser of two weevils.

Cheers,
Robin

2007-07-26 Thread Barry Beattie

 @Dale
"8/8 Release is most likely."

you're right, it certianly sounds good: "CF8 on the 8th of the 8th"**

besides, when do people need an excuse to have a party? Bring it on.

@Andrew
"Was there this much excitement for v7?"

well the beta CF8 seems to have heaps of stuff in it, Charlie
Arehart's "Gems" presso just kept rolling out the ... er... gems...

and besides, CF7 didn't seem to suffer the rubbish journalism about CF
being dead. Now's a time to prove them wrong with a bit of a fuss. As
I said before - who needs an excuse to "par-tae"?

And their site doesn't, thus it's some official Launch.

@Dale, that's what I'm saying:

the "Adobe user group" are not Adobe employees. they're an old,
experianced CFUG Ben is blogging about.

their name is just blurring the lines between the definitive and
indefinite articles ("a" vs "an") in their name.

the link goes to here:

About

UseAdobe is the #1 site for Adobe Fans!

That's right, we're talking Adobe FANATICS! Our site and our meetings
are dedicated to designers, developers and everyday business users who
LOVE Adobe software products.

Way back in 1996 ...

We founded the very first ever ColdFusion User Group aka CFUG. Back
then, ColdFusion was made by the Allaire Corporation.

Years later, Allaire and Macromedia merged, bringing together great
software products such as Flash and ColdFusion, among others. That's
when the CFUG merged with the long-running Washington Area Macromedia
Organization (WAMMO).

We opperated WAMMO just like the CFUGs with monthly meetings featuring
great speakers like Ben Forta, Steve Drucker, Dave Watts, Mike
Chambers, Dave Gruber, Tim Buntel and others. Members loved the chewy
goodness of the technical presentations and the plentiful code
samples.

Following the acquisition of Macromedia by Adobe, we thought carefully
about what our user group means to those that participate. We
realized that this larger company serves many more types of users;
designers, developers, business people and people from all walks of
life who experience the results of what has been created using Adobe
software.

This site is for you ... the Adobe user! It is for all of us. We
invite you to stand up, say your name and proudly proclaim: I
UseAdobe.

@Steve, I wouldn't care if it breaches any licence, it's not like you don't
want to buy the product
@Barry,

Ben Forta, the Head CF Employee at Adobe announced an "Official ColdFusion 8
Launch Event"

Dale, please forgive, but AFAIK, Adobe *aren't* announcing launch
parties - unless you've seen something on an Adobe site that says
otherwise...

User groups/community are doing that, mostly on guessing that the
thing will be released sometime before their September meeting.

I know Darren Tracey of the QLD CFUG is thinking the same for our next
regular meeting on August 8th. Chances are it'll be out before the
Sept meeting which is too late.

Would there be anything in the license agreement that says you can not use

Yes it would work.

Download and install the CF8 Trial, install as 30 day not developer, which
means you get full features.

When CF8 is released (safe bet for 30 days) backup your settings in a CAR
then

Uninstall CF7
Install CF8

Restore your settings. An upgrade might work also, but I couldn't tell you
yet, the above method will definitely work.

I really don't know why Adobe are playing these games, just hurting sales I
would have thought. Why announce Launch Parties and not announce Release and
Pricing.

Hi guys,

I'm in the unfortunate position where I HAVE to get a license of ColdFusion
on a server by Monday at the latest.

Of course I'm waiting for 8 like everyone else, I called Adobe and they said
although they have 'free upgrades' to other Adobe software (like creative
suite CS3) they haven't heard anything about ColdFusion.

I've read mentioned (and thought about it myself) installing the trial
version of CFMX 7 Standard on a production server then upgrade to 8.
Providing v8 was out within 30 days would this actually work? Would you need
a fresh uninstall/re-install?

Just trying to figure out options and possible downtime etc.

[cfaussie] Re: CF8 free upgrade (buy cfmx7 now or wait?)

2007-07-26 Thread michael sharman

Hi guys,

I'm in the unfortunate position where I HAVE to get a license of
ColdFusion on a server by Monday at the latest.

Of course I'm waiting for 8 like everyone else, I called Adobe and
they said although they have 'free upgrades' to other Adobe software
(like creative suite CS3) they haven't heard anything about
ColdFusion.

I've read mentioned (and thought about it myself) installing the trial
version of CFMX 7 Standard on a production server then upgrade to 8.
Providing v8 was out within 30 days would this actually work? Would
you need a fresh uninstall/re-install?

Just trying to figure out options and possible downtime etc.

[cfaussie] Re: CF8 free upgrade (buy cfmx7 now or wait?)

2007-07-25 Thread Barry Beattie

that's a fair point, Andrew. The 1st July (Buntel's "Middle of the
year") might have come and gone but it mustn't be too far away,
surely. the idea of a 30 day enterprise would probably be a good bet.

"The thing is that the launch party..."

you just have to remember that it's "A" launch party, not "THE" launch
party. I mean have you seen it mentioned anywhere Adobe-official? is
there any word on the Adobe labs site? Can that date be proved?

anything else is pure speculation, surely? Perhaps it's just getting
in early to advertise an event because, by reckoning, it must be
"soon-ish", running the risk that the following month will probably be
too late for a party.

bah humbug, my 2c only. What would I know?

2007-07-25 Thread Barry Beattie

"and the launch party is the 31st"

yeah I saw that on a blog - it's a little ol' CFUG in the 'States,
yes? sounds like it's just an excuse for a party - they're just
guessing surely... what would they know?

the only thing you've got to go by is what Tim Buntel said at WebDU

"Middle of the year... middle"

(which blew my guess some 25 days ago...)

but yeah, if I was in your shoes I'd try and hold on a bit longer and
hope for the best (ever the optimist)

that other guess - 8/8 - cute idea. that's the second wed of the month
isn't it? that's when the regular QLD CFUG meeting is usually on...
(Nah, we'd never be that lucky, surely)

I'd wait,

Unless you want to buy a subscription, just wait.

They may release with a if you purchased in the last 30 days policy, but
it's a gamble.

Just get your client on the 30 day Enterprise Trial, then buy CF8, it will
be out within 30 days.

Hi all,

I'm dealing with a bit of a difficult supplier who basically told me the
following when all I simply asked was whether our client would receive a
free upgrade to CFMX8.

you at all and distributors do not get involved in any free upgrade issues.
That will be the responsibility of the end user(Your customer)"

Just wondering where I should go to to ask this question? I know knocking on
Adobes door is wasted time as they never reply to any email send to them.
Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance.
