Re: [Chat] Dispose of Hazardous Waste this weekend

Thanks Sharon, I was wondering when and where there would be hazardous waste
collection!

Subject: [Chat] Dispose of Hazardous Waste this weekend

Are you looking to dispose of any of the following hazardous materials?

•Oil-based paints (latex paint is not hazardous and can be thrown out normally)
•Pesticides
•Herbicides
•Car or household batteries
•Drain cleaners
•Gasoline
•Pool chemicals

These items, among many others, are all hazardous materials and they must be
disposed of properly. Dangerous to our health and/or to the environment, these
materials should not be thrown out with your normal trash.

Baltimore City will be collecting hazardous waste on Friday, September 6th, and
Saturday, September 7th. If you are looking to dispose of any of those
materials, now is your chance.

Unfortunately, certain items cannot be collected by this program including
asbestos, ammunition, fire extinguishers, industrial and medical wastes, and
radioactive materials like smoke alarms with a radioactive symbol.

Hazardous waste disposal is a service provided only to Baltimore City
residents. Residents must show proof of residency and must be able to identify
the item/s they are disposing. Additionally, businesses and private haulers
cannot use this service and must contact a certified vendor to dispose of any
hazardous wastes.

Hazardous waste drop-offs will be held:

Friday, September 6th
Saturday, September 7th
9:00am – 5:00pm
Northwest Citizens Convenience Center
2840 Sisson St
Baltimore, MD 21265

Future drop-off days:
Friday, October 4th
Saturday, October 5th
9:00am – 5:00pm

There are people who make a living hauling used appliances, air conditioners,
etc., to scrapyards where they are compensated for copper and other metals.
Washing machines are attractive to them because they tend to be the heaviest of
appliances. Try calling Rodney Powell at 410-908-8187. I got his name from
Rachel Shane who arranged pick up of old appliances from some of my clients who
were selling their homes.

Our 17 year old cat, named Zoey, went outside Sunday but didn't come back.
She's very thin and I'm worried that she may not have survived the cold nights.
I am trying to remain hopeful, however, that someone has seen her, maybe trying
to find shelter under someone's porch.

Unfortunately, she no longer wore a collar, but she's a long haired calico
(mostly black/dark brown), very thin, friendly (though pretty deaf) & has a
lypoma (fatty tumor) on her left side. I'm happy to send a picture to anyone.

If you've seen her, please call me at 410-458-0847.

Thanks so much.

Dear D. Williams:

For me and for the CVCA Sanitation Committee, I can say that we are extremely
happy and appreciative of the CVCBD efforts to assist with Leaf Removal
throughout Charles Village. The addition of the leaf blowers allows the team
of workers to cover more ground in the time allowed. I was happy to see them
on the 100 block of W. 28th Street two weeks ago. They did the entire block in
one half hour. They will do this job for a short period of time and the noise
from the blowers will soon be over.

To contact the CVCBD office with questions or comments please call 410-235-4411
or email Matt Bradby, Sanitation Supervisor, or David Hill, Executive Director.
I am copying them here with your comment. Also copying the two CVCA reps to
the CVCBD board, Jennifer Erickson and John Henderson. You can also go online
to the CVCBD website at www.charlesvillage.org to check on program
announcements, like the leaf pickup. And the latest election results for the
Quad Reps so that you can find the rep for your Quad. To improve the
efficiency of communications, it is important that you direct your questions,
comments, and concerns to those who are representing your interests. Abell,
Harwood, and Old Goucher Community Associations each have 2 reps as well.

glad I was going to work for a change. I can empathize with people who work
from home or possibly work 3rd shift trying to get some rest. The city is a
noisy enough place without the addition of leaf blowers. Please tell me that
this is a trial run and that this is not going to be a trend! I appreciate the
job that the CVBD does with our extra tax contributions, but this is not one of

[Chat] Yard Debris Removal

2012-07-15 Thread D. Williams

Does anyone know someone who will come and remove yard debris and haul it to an
appropriate composting dump?

I cleared the yard of a vacant house next to me and there are 2 rather large
piles of yard waste that I would rather not have to bag it and have it end up
in a landfill.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Linda,

The feedback that I have received from nearby residents concerned that the
Schnapp Shoppe may be forced to close has been very favorable towards the
business. The matter will be discussed at tomorrow's CVCA Land Use Committee
meeting. I am advocating for evaluating the liquor stores on a case by case
basis and giving them an opportunity for a hearing where they may obtain the
proper zoning if warranted.

Hi, again, everyone,

We were advised to take him to the SPCA and they scanned his chip and were
trying to get in touch with his owner. All should be well. It was quite a

Any suggestions for finding thick plexiglass? Ballpark estimates of cost?
The place on 27th and Remington wanted $43 bucks for a 1/4 inch cut to 21x25.
I don't have a frame of reference for what this stuff costs (though I know the
1/2 inch sheets get expensive).

I really hope that Baxter finds someone. I saw him earlier this fall and

After fixing my porch roof 3 times by cheaper less reliable companies, I used
James McDonald for the rebuilding of my porch and roof and afterward used him
to do the same for a few of my clients. He has always found the source of the
leak, he has repaired it timely and quickly, and he will stand behind his work
with follow up visits at no additional cost. The bay windows on the 2nd floor
are usually the source of the leak which damages the front porch but some of
the porch roofs have the drainage system built into it and the hidden drainage
could be deteriorating and rotting the wood. He has also spotted leaks in
brickwork and caulking. His number is 443-538-2104.

Rosie is home safe and sound as of 6:15 this evening! She is happily
sleeping...likely didn't get much in the past few days on the street. I pass
along my deepest gratitude to everyone tonight who sent positive wishes our way
and who helped in the search. Most especially, THANK YOU to the Matthews-Hale
Family for spotting Rosie in their alley and marching her right on over to us!
Charles Village community at its best!

Hi, everyone- particularly those in the 2700 block areas of Calvert, Guilford,
and St. Paul. We just returned from a brief trip to the shore and came home to
find our cat, Rosie, (about 3 years old) missing. She has a chip ID implant,
so I am hoping someone will pick her up and have her checked. But, if you see
her, she is a dark tabby cat with splashes of white on her face, a stubby tail,
and a white tummy that sways when she walks. Most concerning to me is that
when we adopted her, she had previously been declawed, so she has been an
indoor cat! If you have seen her, please let us know. We are very worried.

Greg did you think of Gertrude's, they are about the only place within walking
distance that has a brunch. Also Abasador Dining Room other than that I also
have not been pleased with Sunday brunch offerings in CV.

My church (Second Presbyterian Church- 4200 St. Paul Street) is looking for
good homes for the pews that are currently in our chapel. They are in really
good condition. Each pew is 12.5 feet long and made of solid oak. We are
moving away from pews and going to moveable chairs. They pew(s) would need to
be picked up on either May 31 or June 1.

If you are interested or have questions, please contact me at

Dear dwilliamsjh...@hotmail.com

I am sorry if I alarmed you unnecessarily.

I am now forwarding the entire message that I received from the CVCBD on 3/23
so you can see it in context.

Last night, Major Buzzuro of the Northern District Police spoke at the CVCA
General Membership Meeting about the 3/12 homicide at 26th between Calvert and
St. Paul (subject of a prior CVCBD crime alert) and the 3/15 homicide at 25th
and Howard possibly being gang related. He asked for our help in identifying
incidents of gang and drug activity, graffiti, etc., and calling 911. The
workshop will teach us what to look for and how to obtain a crime watch number
so that we can make 911 calls anonymously.

Residents can sign up for the weekly crime alerts from CVCBD online at their
website www.charlesvillage.org.

Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

What gangs in the district? A brief description of what we should be looking
for would be helpful with an announcement like this...

This totally reminds me of they way they pitch the 11 o'clock news.

What gangs in the district? A brief description of what we should be looking
for would be helpful with an announcement like this...

This totally reminds me of they way they pitch the 11 o'clock news.

I am so sorry to hear that Paul. Contact the Animal Control vicious animal
group. Do you know where the animal actually resides. Did the police take the
names of the dog's owners? I am out of the country until tomorrow very late
but will be back if you would like to discuss this incident. I was aware of 2
such incidents on Barclay street quite a few years ago and have personal
experience dealling with this issue.

Best of luck, hope your partner and greyhound are not badly hurt.

Anyone:

My partner and our greyhound just got attacked by a pit bull in the 2700 block
of Guilford Ave…with the dog running off of their porch, and 4-5 black youths
egging him on to kill our dog. Both our dog and Greg were knocked down and are
covered in blood. Police have been called, and action will be taken.

A nice person followed him home to check to see if he was all right, but as
might be expected, refused to leave his name or tele number. If anyone heard
or saw the altercation, please email or call immediately at 202-441-1474.

Hi Dana
We think our cat, Paws, may have wandered out the front or back doors.
She is black with white paws, a white blaze on her face and white on her
chest. She has no collar. She is a house cat and it is very unusual for
her to wander off. I just wanted to see if anyone in the neighborhood
had seen her. She has been missing since sometime yesterday (Monday
5/18).
If you have the chance, would tou send this out to the neighbors?
Thanks
Beverly and John

[Chat] Looking for gardener/landscape specialist

2008-08-29 Thread D. Williams

Hello all,
I have a huge virginia creeper/honeysuckle vine that is swallowing up my back
decks and home in CV.
I have lost my ability to care for it and it all must go.

I am trying to find someone who has expertise in taming and removing this
vegetative growth.
Anyone know someone or can anyone recommend a company that specializes in this?
Thanks for any and all suggestions,

The Village learning place has one--but it is Aluminum. You would need a wooden
or Fiberglass one. I don't want to hear that you got fried. You may try a
rental company

Or do you know whereI might find a few?I visited Second Chance yesterday and was able to find the4" x 6" relief tiles that I need, however the 1" x 4" tiles theyhad on hand were in every color but white. Thanks. John

Re: [Chat] dog????

2007-10-25 Thread D. Williams
I hope that you have more interest than I did.  I have rescued a pit bull mix and have found no rescue agencies or shelters willing to take her, in VA, PA or MD.  Generally, if you find or even think of helping a pit bull or pit bull mix dog you are pretty much on your own.   I have emailed all of the pit bull rescue organizations and have heard back from only one, tias promise.  Maria has helped me to "potentially place" the pitmix that I rescued.  It breaks my heart that good dogs, such as the one that I rescued, don't have any options available to them, and this currently introduced legislation just reinforces the fallicy that its the dog, not the owner or the way that it was raised.   It kills me to think that now I will question rescuing a dog because I know that there are no options to help me protect those that can not protect themselves.
In addition, BARC , the SPCA and Animal Rescue were not in the least bit helpful due to the "pitbull" insurance issues and other "prejudicial" dog breed issues.  THIS IS A CRIME!  The dog that I chose to help is sweet and deserves to be adopted.
Best wishes to you on this quest, I hope that the welfare of the animal ends up being what is most important.  The dog fighting culture in Baltimore will continue to offer up more victims than we will be able to support.  As a community and a city, we must prepare to intervene and to provide assistance to many more dogs in the same plight.
Please, help!

p.s. animal control already called. take up to 3 days for someone to
come out. 1,000 calls ahead of ours.

That is very sad and disturbing.  All this talk of new pit bull targeted
legislation and Animal Control is not funded enough now to enforce
the laws we already have.

There's some resources for PitBull rescue listed on this page.

[Chat] Puppy needs a home

2007-09-30 Thread D. Williams
Hello everyone,
I rescued a pit-mix puppy on Friday in East Baltimore and thought that I might be able to fit it into my schedule.  But, as a typical over committer, I don't really have the time given my doctoral studies and full time job that will have me out of state many weeks for the next year.  She is a beautiful and sweet brindle approx. 6 months old.  I took her to the vet on Saturday and she got her shots and worm medication.
The vet says that she should be spayed as soon as possible.  SHe is not completely house broken but is getting the hang of it.  She has some separation axiety issues but will work well in a home with a stay home worker or mom/dad.
If anyone knows someone who would like to adopt a very, very, sweet and smart puppy.  I would hate to have to send her to the SPCA or other rescue organization when a simple transfer would be less traumatic.
Thanks for any help that you might be able to offer.

My last two bills have been about $90 for 10 cubic feet of water.  (I don’t know how much that is.)

The bill I received yesterday is for $470 for 116 cubic feet of water.

Nothing has changed in my life!

Is it possible to get another reading of the water meter?

Has this jump in water use happened, without a reason, to anyone else?

There is a great roofer who actually lives at 3010 Barclay St. His phone number is 410-371-8090 I can't remember what his name is though, I think that it is Adrian.  I am not sure if he does rubber roofing but he certainly told me that he knew someone who did.
Also, I had a "cool roof" installed last year.  Check out the info...at the website below!

Hi Christine:

Earlier this year I contacted Fick Roofing who is on 25th Street. The reason that I contacted them was the fact that they won the Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Ethical business practices and they are local. I thought "This is great--finally I can do business with someone that I can trust. One problem was that they quoted me a price of $75,000.00 which is way above my league.

Fick also quoted a new roof for my home in Reisterstown, which they quoted $45,000.00. I had it done for $7,500.00. The company that did my home did a great job but does not do flat roofs, sorry to say.

FYI: The rubber roof is the way to go. The white is a coating that is applied after the roof is replaced.
Who ever you come up with, go on line to www.baltimore.bbb.org (Better Business Bureau) to see if the roofer has any complaints filed against them.

Good Luck

From: Moore, Dana Petersen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2007 12:53 PMSubject: Another Burglary, Another Plea to Neighbors, Another Call for Help

Good afternoon everyone.  Please note the following information regarding a burglary in the 2800 block of Guilford Avenue.

This is the second if not third burglary in as many weeks.  We all need to "be the neighbor we wish we had" by being sensitive to unusual activity in our blocks, being comfortable with reporting such activity to the police department and not placing ourselves at risk.  This alone won’t solve all of the problems (decidedly, we need more policing in our area), but it will help.

Please also do the following:
· Turn your porch lights on at night and turn them off in the morning.  Don’t whine about the cost – it’s mere pennies!  And, if the porch light’s broke, contact one of our super C’Ville electrical contractors (Got recommendations? Send names to Mike Klima and me)to come out and fix it, finally!
· Close your windows when you are not at home or not in a nearby room.  It’s very nice to have all of the windows on our first floor open.  I’m thinking cool breezes fluttering our lavender-washed lace curtains.  Nice.  BUT, if you’re upstairs in your back room variously staring at your computer and your backyard, that’s a no-no and, as nice as it is to imagine the lavender scented breeze you could be setting yourself up for an unwelcome visitor!
· Pick up your newspaper in the morning.  You don’t have to read it – just get it off of your porch so it looks like someone’s actually coming and going!  Letting papers collect for days makes it look like you are just waiting for trouble, or a neighbor to worry that you might be trapped under a heavy piece of furniture and so can’t get to the porch to take care of this yourself.  Neither option is desirable.
· Remove fliers stuck in your railings, left on your porch, stuck on your door, stuck in your shrubs, etc.  Don’t get mad at the folks that pay or are paid pennies to do the delivery.  That’s pretty much a royal waste of your time, energy and brilliance, unless you are willing to actually follow-up on your threatening call to sue the vendor’s pants off for trashing your piece of the neighborhood.  Just pick them up, bunch them in to a tight wad and trash them. Or, take the time to carefully catalogue them for future use (“Chinese Food”, “Dog Watchers”,
“Gardening”, “Home Repairs”, “I’ll Buy/Sell Your House”, “Pizza Parlors”, “Roofers”, “Subs and Sandwiches” are useful categories that come to mind).  Or, consider using them for scrap paper to record all of the solicitation calls you get (insert same categories as above).  You really don’t have to be Martha Stewart to figure how to “repurpose” these things - just do whatever one does with these things!  Whatever you decide, just don’t leave them on your porch, for the same reason as stated at the second bullet.
· Bring in the mail.  Every day!  If you’re going to be away for a time (that’s more than one day if you get as much mail as Ralph and me and you have a small mailbox like we do.  One “Baltimore Magazine” plus “The Messenger” and a bill or two and we’re overflowing!), ask the USPS to hold your mail at the post office until you return.  Or, ask a neighbor to collect your mail for you.  Most neighbors are glad to do this and will even collect it in a pretty shopping bag and waive off the promise of trinkets or chotzkis (how do you spell that??) from wherever you’re headed off to.  So, it’s worry-free, hassle-free and … well, free!
· Become a “Block Watcher” or “Crime Watcher” by registering your big bad self with the BCPD.  That’s the “Baltimore City Police Department – Northern District”, up on Coldspring Lane.  Officer Doug Gibson will help you with the paper work (actually, it’s so easy to fill out the paper work that if you find you do need help to do it, you should not continue on as this program is not for you!).  I did, just to see if it’s as easy to do as promised.  It is.  I have my papers to prove it.  DO IT!!
· Get a dog.  It does not have to be a big one, just one with a big bark.  Really!  We’ll put Rajah, (a/k/a “Will Bark For Anything”) on loaner and send him over to do the training.  He’ll love it!  Your neighbors won’t but then, unwelcome “visitors” probably won’t either.  And isn’t that just the whole point?!!
· Keep reading my e-mails for information about CVCA plans for meetings with the BCPD Northern District requesting more policing (patrols on foot, car, bicycle, horses even!) and security throughout all of Char

Re: [Chat] Crime update

2007-01-11 Thread D. Williams

Just a message, a plea, to all concerning crime in our area.  As a community, we need to make sure a police report is filed for each incidence.  I know that it is time consuming and actually some officers are reluctant to volunteer to fill out police reports, but to get a better idea of what is really happening in our community we need to be more conscientious about insiting on police reports being filed.

The yellow boxes are Planet Aid their website is below, I don't think it is a bad thing!
http://www.planetaid.org/
This doesn't seem like a bad organization to me, proceeds of sales from used clothing to Africa and Asia.  I know that there was some discussiion about this being a "shady" enterprise.  I'm not so sure about it.  After looking at the 2005 Report, it appears that only 7% of the proceeds go to administration?  Am I wrong?
PS.  This IS VERY DIFFERENT than Planet Earth clothing, which is an extreme sport enterprise!

Thanks everyone for all the good hints in which to investigate the history in the 1960s-2000.  Oddly, its a period where not many documents have made their way into public archives yet, so its the most difficult to research.  That's why we will rely on you all to help us along!

I'll be asking lots of questions in the next two months, and hopefully you will all help just by reminiscing where you shopped and who you met, etc.

Why was the store where Donna's is now, "strange?"  Intriguing!

Paul,I'll have to look for photos.  But among those who were very active in the anti-war movement are Gren Whitman, Karen Olson (still in CV), Dee Ann Mims, Dean Pappas (lives in northwest suburbs), Vickie Pollard (moved to Maine), Jo Ann Robinson (still in CV), Megan and Walter Shook (now in Roland  Park), Dave Greene (Megan's brother, ran for House of Delegates in 43rd), and probably a bunch of others I cannot think of right now.  Some are still in CV or nearby.Dave and Megan founded The Crack of Doom Coffeehouse on Maryland Ave.; it was where there is now a Korean restaurant; I think that that is at the southwest corner of 22nd or 23rd Street.I'm not sure whether Brendan Walsh and his wife Willa Bickham (I'm not sure of the spelling) lived in CV then, but they also were extremely active in the
Interfaith Peace Mission founded by Phil Berrigan.  Brendan and Willa run Viva House, a Catholic Worker effort to help the poor and the down and out in South Baltimore.  Also, the Peace Action Center was located in a row house at the southeast corner of 26th and Maryland.Bill O'Connor, who died very recently, was very active with Phil Berrigan, and I learned at Bill's  memorial service that the napalm used by the Catonsville 9 to burn draft files was mixed in Bill's basement.   His  widow, Marilyn, is someone you definitely should interview and still is in CV.Steve.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Re: [Chat] police reports

2006-10-19 Thread D. Williams
Hello all,
You know how the benefit district handed out refrigerator magnets at the meeting.  I was wondering if we could put emergency contact information and helpful tips (step by step how to) on how to interact more effectively with the police on a magnet and distribute it throughout the community.  Any idea how much that would cost.  I'm thinking something around 3 by 5.
I think that a little community education could benefit the crime reporting and improve our understanding of the crime stats in our area.  Possibly we could  contact the JHU Security and they would be willing to share cost and distribute them to students at orientation as well.

I suggest a magnet because I can never find a piece of paper in my house when I really need it.

[Chat] Burglary

2006-08-28 Thread D. Williams

Cllimbing bandit?  Never heard of him, was he "away"?  They entered her second story apartment.  Are the police aware of his activities and location?  I'm interested in hearing more about this.

[Chat] Burglary in Charles Village

2006-08-28 Thread D. Williams

I wanted to post that a friend of mine that lives at the corner of 29th and Guilford had someone come into her apartment during the night, while she was sleeping.  The individual left no obvious trace of entry to her apartment and removed her purse and her backpack.
