I took the 70 SS instrument cluster apart to clean it as well. The best
thing to use is compressed air cans. DO NOT TOUCH the numbers on the faces
of the gauges, they will smear, wipe off, plus the acidity of your hands will
discolor the face in time. Also DO NOT wipe the plastic cover as it will
scratch. The gauges come out by simply unscrewing them from the back of the
housing. i messed up and wiped the front of the plexiglass and now its
scratched so I have to get a new one. They are finally available. It will
work out good anyway since I want to convert it from idiot lights to gauges
which are also now available from Ground Up. Good Luck.

Last summer, we replaced the body on an '84 S-10 Blazer. Although it's not
a Chevelle, there are some things that we forgot to undo in our excitement:
The ground wire for the fuel sending unit
The ground wire for the license plate light
Small wires like this can cause havoc because you have the body clear up in
the air while you have to stick your head in there and quickly undo them.
So my advice is make sure that everything is unattached from the body
(parking brake cable, floor shifter, etc) before lifting it.

Good luck!

 Hey List -
Well, since my 427 SBC project looks like it won't be done
anytime soon, I've decided to upgrade my Chevelle to a 4-wheel
disc brake system while it is still in the shop. I've been
looking at kits from Master Power Brakes, Global West and
Stainless Steel Brakes, and I've pretty much decided to go with
the SSB kit with 12 front rotors and 10.5 rears. The SSB kit
uses the original drum brake spindles, which is good because I
don't want the ride height of the car to change. It also has an
adjustable proportioning valve that a lot of the other kits on
the market don't have. Problem is, I want to be at least
*reasonably* sure that the 12 rotors will fit with my 15x7 SS
cragars. I called the tech line twice, and of course I got 2
different answers! The first guy said I need at least a 15x8 rim
for the 12 rotors to fit, and the second guy said that they will
work with the 15x7's with (worst case scenario) some minor
caliper machining. Does anyone else have experience with this
kit, or any other 12 kit out there using 15 wheels? I know
several of you out there are using 12 front rotors, and I
thought at least one person had them with 15 rims (Rodney in
AZ?). Any advice/problems encountered/experiences with this or
any similar kits (or 12 rotors in general) would be greatly
 appreciated. TIA.

I think the Mexico engines are made a little stronger then the American
blocks. I read this in Hotrod Magazine way back in the early 90's.

That could be true. I never got the chance to test the theory of the new
one's reliability cause I had to sell the MCSS. I do know the walls of the
motors made now are thinner than the older blocksfor high HP apps the
Merlin blocks are considered far better due to their thicker walls.

Anyway the company was called Target Master . don't know if its the
same
company.

The Target motors were sold by Autozone (not sure if they still are)...but
they had a very high rate of failure. I've talked to several mechanics that
have asked me what motor the '83 has in it (Goodwrench 350 made in
Detroit)...they all said it was much preferred to the Targets for
reliability.

As far as whether the Goodwrench or Vortec motors are stronger now than the
older motors were, it's the general consensus of many that the older blocks
are better. It makes me very happy that both of my 350's (the 78's is
original) are considered better then the newer motors by those who work on
them every day.

This is not to say there's an issue with the workmanship in Mexico as much
as it is to say the General has been cutting corners since the 80's as is
evident in the quality of the cars built since then. Personally, I will not
ever buy another car (or motor) built after 1979.

I pulled the warped frame out from under a Caprice I was doing up for a
Roadhog (racecar). Since I didn't care about damaging it I threw a chain
through the middle and we cut the body loose from the frame, took the
tractor and yanked 'er off!! Yeah it bent the middle of the roof, but it
definatly was effective, don't recommend doing that with the Chevelle. I
have a friend who says to use jacks to get the body up and then roll the
frame out from under it, I don't know how I'll end up doing mine, but I know
I'll need more room than what I have got.

Anyway its looking to me like it will be a little while before I can get the

thats about it for now I'll keep you guys posted on what goes on, and I'm
going to get some pics up of before and after so you can see how decent it
looked before she got up close and personel with the guardrail kind.

Thanks for the info. I've decided to take a little more time and check out some
other companies as well (Baer, Wilwood, etc.). I've got PLENTY of time sigh,
so I might as well take my time and get as much info as possible before making a
final decision. I think I might pop for some more goodies too - powder coated
calipers, zinc dipping, etc. grin

I don't want to throw any water on your project, it sounds like a good one.
I used Baer brakes on my front end. Quite possibly it's the size of the
calipers that make the difference but with their 12 brakes they require a
 16 wheel w/0 offset.

All of their systems bolt to stock spindles (like mine did with my 67) and
have all brackets, bolts, master cylinder, etc.

 Then I
sprung for the polished calipers, slotted/drilled/zinc dipped rotors... :*)

Thanks for the support in your replies. I didn't realize
how much I was wrapped up in this El Camino, until I had
nothing to work on last weekend and assessed where I am
with it in writing the original post.

I'm looking into having the frame straightened and will
report back on the verdict.

When I took my frame out from under the car it was pretty easy. You need
four good high jack stands, floor jack, some other pieces of wood to use
against the floor and some long 4 x 4 or 6 x 4's to jack up the car with.

DO NOT USE BLOCKS when I was moving them to put them away 3 broke right
apart. Too close for comfort.

I have a 72 chevelle malibu, and it is all stock up front except, the inner and outer fenders, hood, and front bumber are fiberglass. and the otherday iwasdriving it and ther was a rattaling every time i hit small bumps in the road, i checked all the bolts that connect the fiberglass, and nothing is hitting the a-arms, could something in the front drum brakes be rattiling? Thanx for any ideas

Moser does make a bolt it 9. It's a nice setup too. You need to paint
everything and clean the inside of the housing good before you put it
together. You can use your brakes off your 12 bolt by modifying the hole
where the axle passes through the backing plate and with a GM to Ford
U-joint you are in business using your existing driveshaft. I have their
setup in my 71.

I think Moser makes a 9 kit for Chevelles.
