[Chevelle-List] DIY Paint Job - some small tips and a link
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Hello Folks In the past days it has been a lot of mails about paint jobs, prices and how to do it your self. While browsing the net I found this really nice article about DIY paint job. Although the page is written by some VW lover he has some very valid points and what he write is very good and adequate. However after reading the page I would like to add some remarks about fillers and how to apply them to the car. 1; If you are serious about fillers use lead fillers - the old fashion way of doing it. Well not easy but very good. 2: He says fillers should only be put on bare metal - Well that's is kind of true if you want the filler to really stick to the car (so to say). However the vital "law" of the zinc chromatic primer is lost. You see to provide a good rust protection the zinc chromatic primer should always be as close to the metal as possible. Otherwise it will not serve it's purpose of being a "giver" electrons instead of the steel giving it away to the oxidation process. This happens due to the fact that zinc is less "nobel" than steel. Okay so putting a filler between the steel and the zinc in the primer is not good since you will insulate the zinc from the steel (unless you use lead which it self is serving the same purpose as zinc). The conclusion is that if you want rust under the filler apply it directly to the metal (naturally rust under the filler will make it come lose after a while - read years). Well it's just my two cent tip - yes I always use a zinc primer underneath the filler. Well here is the link to the article: http://www.thebugshop.org/bsfqpnt.htm Re Beck _ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [Chevelle-List] Tires & rims
Hi John, Currently I have Centerline Billet Hammers, 15x8 w/ 245/60HR15 on front (4.5" backspace) and 15x10 w/ 295/50HR15 on rear (5.5" backspace). The fronts fit just fine, but for the rear I had to trim the inner fender lip about 3/8" and move the lower shock mount towards the center of the car about 2" (I made relocaters out of 1/4" flat stock). Pictures can be seen on my web page. cYa- Herb Lumpp1966 El CaminoACES #3509http://web.tampabay.rr.com/herbsworld/index.htm - Original Message - From: John Butler To: Chevelle-List@Chevelles. In that case here goesmine is a very nice 350 based '70 Elky. It's got/had factory air and everything is there except the compressor. Are there any good websites or books on how to restore an air conditioner system for these things ? It's pretty hot in the truck during the summer as it doesn't have the cool kick panel vents that my '73 Nova has. I have a lot more Elky specific restoration questions, but this one is at the top of my list right now. tnx, John -Original Message-From: Kelly C. Especially here in NJ, it seems no one has any respect anymore. Everytime I take it out, I am always getting tailgated or challenged. I basically keep it as a weekend warrior/show car. I try to hit a show every weekend with it, and the further away the better. I drove it down to Maryland (150 miles one way), two weekends in a row :). My brother-in-law, who has seen & driven the car says the drive to Phx. isn’t a good idea, as the front end has a great deal of play, & the brakes are weak. Which brings me to the next question. Does anyone have a comprehensive list of the make, body style, & year of car for a “low aggravation” disk brake conversion? In the past, I have successfully converted 2 ’64 Chevy pickups over to disk brakes using junkyard parts, so I am somewhat familiar with the drill. Also, I own a Tool & Die Shop, so modifying tie rod ends or whatever, isn’t a big deal. This El Camino will not be restored to original, but rather be a daily driver, & not a show car. I can already hear the groans about the disk brake issue (sorry), so i will end with that. Thanks for your help. JOE BANKS AZTECH MOLD & DIE STEEL 602-257-2300

RE: [Chevelle-List] Driven Daily Drivers
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > So who drives their Chevelle or Elky the most ??? How about the least for a true daily driver? While I drive the Chevelle virtually daily (with a car seat in the back for my 2 year old daughter so I can take her to school), I only drive a thousand or so miles a year. Problem is, I work less than 2 miles from home, so even with a few outside trips it is hard to break 2,000 miles a year! Last year was barely over 1,000 miles driven. Now, years ago before I was married and bought my wife the 4WD Blazer, I used to use my Chevelle for ski trips. 750 mile weekends (LA to Mammoth) and 2,000 miles in a week (Tahoe, SLC, Taos) was a regular thing for us back then. I took it from LA to Taos with three guys and five pairs of skis on top (think 13 mpg) at an average speed of 80 mph. The other car in our caravan was a turbo Celica GT. Even with the huge aerodynamic disadvantage he could not keep up with the beast from Chevrolet. I did have the roof rack break free on one trip to Salt Lake City, but we were able to slow down before the rear came off. Even covered in salt and mud, I still got compliments from people! Re: [Chevelle-List] '66 El Camino
Thanks. I don't have a whole lot left, it's just going to be expensive. The stock 10 bolt is still in it, I plan to swap that in favor of a Currie +9 rear. The interior and stereo system need to be done. I need tires for my new wheels. I have to wire it before I do anything else - I've decided to go with a Ron Francis Wire Works kit. They custom tailor it to your specific car and needs. Painless only has "universal" kits and I've wasted too much time with so-called universal parts. Other than those big items, I'm sure I'll find a hundred other little things that need to be done too! : ) cYa- Herb - Original Message - From: 396guy To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, November 29, 2001 9:16 AM Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] '66 El Camino Palms sweaty, lips dry...congrats! Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I normally put 30/40 miles a day going to/from work to include lunch and maybe a stop somewhere to shop on the way home, but that's about it except for weekend cruising and summer car shows. After work trips, weekend shopping, day trips, etc we usually take the wife's car. Not 1500 miles a month, probably more like 700/800 in a normal month, but in the SS or the Elky it sure is fun. I'll probably put another 3K to 4K per year driving to shows around the Midwest and of course, Nashville. [Chevelle-List] Just an idea I'm throwing around, got some questions
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Ok guys you know that I bought my little more door for the fact that I would get some killer gas mileage out of that little 230 straight sic and the two speed Powerglide. I had a revelation one day while looking through an autotrader I saw an ad for a late model S10 with a 4.3 in it the whole truck was totaled but the people wanted $300 for it, so wheels started turning. How bad would it be to swap over that brand new 4.3 and overdrive tranny into that cute little 4 door? I love the 4.3 had one in a Blazer took a lickin and kept on kickin. Its just an idea I know I would have to screw around with the driveline and use that trucks computer and all that good junk to run the motor. It seems it could work, what do you guys think? Re: [Chevelle-List] Paint Job Prices
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List The motor is normally mounted on the outside in its own box so rain/water/moisture etc. cann't get to it, for a home built deal I figure you could use an electric motor preferably one with variable speed and is reversable use an alternator pulley or a pully of some sort, and have that part of it on the ground straight below a window, use a fan housing with another pulley mounted to it and mount it in the window. The whole setup wouldn't take too long to rig up and could be done for under $75 if that especially if your like me and collect all the good junk everybody throws out!! The belt driven fans and such go for about $200 or so somtimes less depending where you can find it. I bought one of these setups year before last from the local technical school for $10 the motor wasn't too hot but I got everything I needed. But it is basically what I just explained, there is actually nothing to it. The setup I bought was just fo rventalation and it was originally mounted inside but when I go to paint my truck I'm going to make it an outside setup and hook the motor up backwards so it will turn to blow the air out, and like everybody else said use furnace filters so I don't paint the rest of my vehicles.
