[Chevelle-List] AC DElco plugs

2002-02-06 Thread Keith Cooper

Has anyone install AC delco plugs lately. I thought
that the last set of AC plugs I installed, the electro had a u-groove cut in it
and the tip was tapered. I am trying to verify if the plug had the U-Groove cut.
I have seen plugs with this U-groove here lately but don't remember the brand.

I was on Nippondenso.com website and noticed that
they make this u-groove/taper tipped plug. I also saw a plug that looked like
the Champion plug. I wonder if this company is making the plugs for
Accel,Champion,AC Delco.etc.

[Chevelle-List] Radiators

Hi all. I have a new question here. Since the radiator in my 66 was
destroyed in the car accident, I'm up for a new radiator. I have been
debating one of the Be Cool radiators, but I have also thought pretty heavy
on just getting an original type one through work (its $289 plus with a
garanteed lifetime warranty as long as I own the vehicle, its also a new
unit). But the original is a 3 core, I believe the one I had in it was a 4,
I could be wrong never paid much attention to it. I do know that it was the
wrong one for the car would hang about 2 inches below the bumper (scary I
once hit a dog, thought the rad was a goner). Would a 3 core with an
electric fan cool my big block well? Or would possibly a 4 core out of say
a 70 model with a 454 be better and would it work? Thanks. BTW how would I
wire up the fan, is there a way to make it kick on when the thermostat
opens? Well hope I can get some help.

Josh,
Most electric fans come with wiring instructions. They are simple to hook
up, just read the instructions. You can also buy a thermostat control switch
wire it in. These are usually extra but can be purchased wherever you buy
the fan. As far as the radiator, I don't know for sure but I've heard good
things about the Be Cool ones. I personally would stay with a four core if
possible.
Someone else may be able to give you a better answer on the radiator
question. I plan on putting a Be Cool in my Malibu this summer. I already
have an electric fan hooked up.

[Chevelle-List] Re: 72 malibu smallblock

2002-02-06 Thread Don

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Hi Bill, Welcome to the list.
You didn't say what hp your 350 is or what condition it is in. A small block
makes horsepower by compression breathing. 300 to 350 hp is not that hard
to get out of a 350 it sounds like you already have the beginnings with
the intake carb. Working within a budget is tough but things like a mild
cam kit, headers an electronic ignition system are not that expensive
should fit into your budget. You don't need extravagant aluminum race heads
but a good set of heads with 202 valves is a must for breathing on a 350. So
are a good intake/carb a decent set of headers. A solid shortblock making
around 10 to 1 compression with the above bolt ons will make good power.
The hood I can't help you with.
The brakes are not really hard but do involve quite a bit of work. There are
a couple of options as to how to go about it. There are kits made that will
include everything you need to completely convert everything over to disks
with new parts but they are somewhat expensive. You can also salvage used
parts from other cars or buy swap new/used parts from other individuals.
Some of the other members can give you a lot more details on what's involved
 the expense of this changeover.
Good luck on your Malibu!
Don

Hey Bill. Welcome! My suggestion would be to somehow upgrade to disc brakes
first off. You can only go as fast as your brakes will allow in my opinion!
It can be done pretty cheaply if you get the complete setup from a junkyard.
I got a complete disc brake setup for my 72 for $150 if I remember
correctly. I ended up buying a lot of new parts simply for cosmetic reasons.
(Booster, master cyl etc...) But the calipers and Mastercylinders are very
cheap new(Around $30 each). I had the old rotors cut ($8 ea.) and used them.
The only thing really important is the spindles. The other alternative is to
spend the big bucks and go with a Baer brake kit but you'll blow a lot of
your budget on that alone. Another worthwhile upgrade is a complete
suspension kit from PST with the Polygraphite bushings. Again junkyard
swaybars can be found cheaply and the front bars from 2nd gen Z28 and Trans
Ams will fit. (1970-82) (usually $25 at junkyards)
I did all that suspension stuff to my car at the same time I aded the front
discs. It now handles and drives better than a new car! Good luck with your
72!

Josh,
I have a copper 4 core in my 70. Car runs cool even when racing. Don't
skimp on your choice. If I did it again I would go aluminum for two
reasons-weight and heat dissipation. You can buy a kit that turns the
electric fans on/off at a preset temperature. Summit/Jegs and others sell
them.

Well I will be buying new uppers simply so they will be boxed off and
replace the current bushings although I know you can do that separately.
For anyone interested in the pro-touring setup I recommend you check out
this site: www.g-machines.com. This is a great site with a message
board and a lot of helpful information when it comes to suspension among
other things. You will find that the site is geared mostly towards

[Chevelle-List] Tire Balancing

2002-02-06 Thread GSawn
I just had my alignment done and tires balanced this weekend. The tires were pretty bad and needed about an ounce each. I drove about 400 vibration free miles on them and they need to be balanced again! The weights haven’t fallen off, the wheels and tires I bought in September only have a couple thousand miles, and the shocks, springs, and ball joints are all brand new. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem?
Thanks.

weights haven’t fallen off, the wheels and tires I bought in September only
have a couple thousand miles, and the shocks, springs, and ball joints are all
brand new. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? Thanks.

Sounds like a belt has shifted. Get new tires. The life you

Sounds like the tires are beat, I'd go get some new ones. The vibration can be caused by them being abnormally worn, or just worn out in general. I've seen bent rims on occasion too. Just something else to look out for.

Perhaps one of you ASE certified mechs can help me out. I want to replace the O2
sensor I have (1 wire) in my elky with a heated sensor (3 wire). I found one at the
parts store which has correct threads pigtail/connector.

But I cannot figure out which lead is the sensor and which are for the heater. It is
for a chrysler product of some sort and the wiring is: A - Red B - Black and C -
Grey. I was hoping that there is an industry standard for these.

Thanks to all that voted, the final tally is 17 to 4 with ECC winning.

I am starting the site building now and I need links to all years Elky
pictures. If your on the Elky list, I've already got most everyone's car on
the hard drive, but if you know of any other pics I could use for the
spotter's guide, please send the link. Also if you've taken new shots of
your car and not posted them yet, send 'em on by.

For those of you on the Chevelle list and Malibu lists, I could use links
for your cars as well as others you know of. Since I don't have everyone's
car linked, send me all of 'em and I'll get the ones I don't have. I would
ask to just get the pics, but this could take awhile for my email to open
all of 'em.

Thanks again, it was fun checking out all the votes and letting you guys
name the site.

GW does not offer upper rear control arms. When I bought the heavy duty
lowers (the ones with the heim joints), the salesman said leave the stock
uppers in place as long as the rubber bushings are in good condition and
don't worry about boxing them (I boxed them anyway). He went on to say the
lowers are the ones that take all the abuse and the uppers are basically
there to keep the pinion angle and rear end located properly and I didn't
need a rear sway bar with the Negative Roll front suspension. We'll see...

I recall that they had both, and the upper is really only needed if you
plan to drag race. I did not find the uppers on their Web site, and I
don't have catalogs here at work. But I do recall that they said I did
not need the uppers (or new springs) when I did the rear for street/road
 course setup.

Michael,
I've got a '67 SS427 I used boxed rear control arms from FTM Parts the business
owner (Bobby is his name) was a member on the previous Chevelle list, I haven't
seen him post anything on this list. From what I understand he manufactured
them as well as other parts. They are really good quailty and reasonably
priced. I've had them on my car almost an year now and no problems. I also used
Addco sway bars (front and rear) those changes alone made a night and day
difference in the way the car handles. Anyway here's there contact information
if your interested:
