[Chevelle-List] My 72 Malibu
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Thanks all for the suggestions, they helped a lot! Suspension was deffinately high up on my list, the car doesn't handle too well right now. How involved is it? Where can I get the PST kit and how much does it cost? Thanks again for all of the ideas. Bill --- NoNeck [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Hey Bill. Welcome! My suggestion would be to somehow upgrade to disc brakes first off. You can only go as fast as your brakes will allow in my opinion! It can be done pretty cheaply if you get the complete setup from a junkyard. I got a complete disc brake setup for my 72 for $150 if I remember correctly. I ended up buying a lot of new parts simply for cosmetic reasons. (Booster, master cyl etc...) But the calipers and Mastercylinders are very cheap new(Around $30 each). I had the old rotors cut ($8 ea.) and used them. The only thing really important is the spindles. The other alternative is to spend the big bucks and go with a Baer brake kit but you'll blow a lot of your budget on that alone. Another worthwhile upgrade is a complete suspension kit from PST with the Polygraphite bushings. Again junkyard swaybars can be found cheaply and the front bars from 2nd gen Z28 and Trans Ams will fit. (1970-82) (usually $25 at junkyards) I did all that suspension stuff to my car at the same time I aded the front discs. It now handles and drives better than a new car! Good luck with your 72! First make it stop a bit better, then maybe run a little quicker. Than maybe replace some worn interior trim. Then you realize that the paint isn't quite as nice as the interior...so lets paint it, but heck I may as well paint the frame too, so off comes the body IT NEVER ENDS... Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I believe rating on the engine was about 165hp when I looked it up. The engine seens to be in pretty good shape, but I'm not an expert. I do already have electronic ignition, so I guess that's a plus. Headers were another thing at the top of my list (besides suspension/brakes). Recommend any brands in particular?? Thanks! Bill --- Don [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Hi Bill, Welcome to the list. You didn't say what hp your 350 is or what condition it is in. A small block makes horsepower by compression breathing. 300 to 350 hp is not that hard to get out of a 350 it sounds like you already have the beginnings with the intake carb. Working within a budget is tough but things like a mild cam kit, headers an electronic ignition system are not that expensive should fit into your budget. You don't need extravagant aluminum race heads but a good set of heads with 202 valves is a must for breathing on a 350. So are a good intake/carb a decent set of headers. A solid shortblock making around 10 to 1 compression with the above bolt ons will make good power. The hood I can't help you with. The brakes are not really hard but do involve quite a bit of work. There are a couple of options as to how to go about it. There are kits made that will include everything you need to completely convert everything over to disks with new parts but they are somewhat expensive. You can also salvage used parts from other cars or buy swap new/used parts from other individuals. Some of the other members can give you a lot more details on what's involved the expense of this changeover. Good luck on your Malibu! Re: [Chevelle-List] Rotisserie
Josh, I may do the same for my metal magician! I picked up the project from Redi-Strip yesterday and U-Hauled the carcass back to Johnstown. If you have never seen a car after Redi-Strip is done, you need to do so some time. Wow. The car is completely devoid of any rust, bondo, paint, sealer, wax, goo or french fries. You have fresh tin to play with. Even the lead seams used by the factory disappear. When I dropped off the car last night, my metal guy was truely impressed. The amount of expensive labor that Redi-Strip will save him (and eventually me) is huge. Plus there won't be any hidden surprises. All the sheet metal is there without makeup. I did find a few areas that will need repaired that I thought were solid, but since this one is my AACA Hershey project car, I won't skimp. I was also surprised at the quality of some of the previous repairs as there was a significant dent in the trunk lid that I had no idea was there, of course now the dent and puller holes are glaring me in the face. Cost? $1000 for the body and roughly $100 each for the doors, hood and trunk. I didn't do the fenders since one is shot and the other is in really good shape as is. Tony

Bill, A complete suspension rebuild is doable in the garage/driveway, but it CAN be intimidating.I have re-done mine (front rear) twice. It was far enough apart in time, that each time was a learning experience. I won't say that it was easy, but definitely doable by a rookie. You also have many resources available to help. Check the TECH Forums at www.chevelles.com (where you signed up for this list). Also Check the WorkShop area of http://links.chevelles.net/links Some very good internet links there. Also several folks on this list will be glad to help you thru the difficult parts. Before you buy/do anything, decide what goal you have in mind for your chevelle. Drag Racing??? Sports Car Handling??? Daily Driver??? Original Restoration??? Each will require different parts and approaches. There is a link to P-S-T, as well as several other suppliers at http://links.chevelles.net in the supplier/suspension area. A complete stock rebuild kit is $250-$300.00 for the front. My personnal experience is to make sure that you use quality parts (MOOG, TRW, DANA) . I used a kit for the first rebuild, and after only 50,000 miles EVERYTHING needed replacement again. This time around, I shopped for MOOG parts. They will cost a bit more, but IMHO well worth the cost. rick schaefer - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Chevelle-List] For the upper east and west coast! aka rust belt!
I usually put my car in heated storage from Nov-march, and never start it, till the day i take it out, my thinking is if you start the darn thing, your exhaust gets all wet from the condensation, and if you dont run it long enough, guess what the ole rust starts from the inside of your exhaust pipes, this of course is short term storage, long term might be a different story, cause its allways good to keep every part lubed and in working order, ive never had a problem yet doing what i do, i just pull the battery out, i dont even raise it off the ground, like i said ive never had a problem this of course is my opinion. The engine seens to be in pretty good shape, but I'm not an expert. I do already have electronic ignition, so I guess that's a plus. Headers were another thing at the top of my list (besides suspension/brakes). Recommend any brands in particular?? Thanks! Bill --- Don [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Hi Bill, Welcome to the list. You didn't say what hp your 350 is or what condition it is in. A small block makes horsepower by compression breathing. 300 to 350 hp is not that hard to get out of a 350 it sounds like you already have the beginnings with the intake carb. Working within a budget is tough but things like a mild cam kit, headers an electronic ignition system are not that expensive should fit into your budget. You don't need extravagant aluminum race heads but a good set of heads with 202 valves is a must for breathing on a 350. So are a good intake/carb a decent set of headers. A solid shortblock making around 10 to 1 compression with the above bolt ons will make good power. The hood I can't help you with. The brakes are not really hard but do involve quite a bit of work. There are a couple of options as to how to go about it. There are kits made that will include everything you need to completely convert everything over to disks with new parts but they are somewhat expensive. You can also salvage used parts from other cars or buy swap new/used parts from other individuals. Some of the other members can give you a lot more details on what's involved the expense of this changeover. Good luck on your Malibu! Don Hello All, Just thought I would introduce myself and ask for some advice. My name is Bill, and I live in Louisville, Kentucky. I own a 72 Malibu, and I would like to make some improvements. The interior/body is good, it has a th350 trans, 350 small block (not original), drum brakes (would like disk), Edlebrock performer manifold and Edlebrock carb w/ manual choke. It has a cowel induction hood, so I would like to get cowel induction working on it. My main goal is to make it a 300-400hp daily driver. What do you guys recommend? I don't know that much about cars, but I am trying to learn as much as I can in the process of upgrading my Malibu. I can only spend about $3,000. Any advice would help. Thanks!!! Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Jeff I am very wary of even the good repro vinyl. I ordered a PUI interior several years ago in Tan. Within 3 years it was green/mustard where exposed to UV light. I've mentioned this both here and at chevelle tech, but never heard of anyone else with the same problem. When I replaced the door panels I went with parts from Distinctive (owned by ACC now) and so far no problems. But the car is exposed to UV a lot less now. Re: [Chevelle-List] 12 bolt posi question , {new}
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Bob, Sounds like your rearend was set-up by someone who knows what they are doing. There is a method used to tune a posi. I read that it was used by road/solo racers to help achieve better traction coming out of the corners (?). If my memory serves me correct, the method used to test the posi was to leave one rear tire on the ground (with the weight of the car), remove the other tire and then with a homemade tool (described below) attach a torque wrench an apply pressure to see at what lbs/ft. of torque the rearend would break loose from the other side. The goal was to get it break loose at 120-140 lbs/ft. (?). The homemade tool: was a 1/8-1/4 plate of steel, with holes that allow the plate to be placed over the axle studs, and sit flush against the brake drum. Then a nut was welded to the center of the plate for the torque wrench to attach too. Re:[Chevelle-List] Truck/clutch help
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Folks I got the following email from a coworker. As I recall, the truck is an early 90's chevy with 305 and a 5 speed manual tranny. Can anyone offer up a suggestion on what is going on? Thanx. rick Hi, OK, let me run this by you and see if anything crops up in your Chevrolet brain. As he was leaving Albany the clutch stopped working (pedal to the metal). So he shifts without using the clutch and then he hears and feels a bang and it won't come out of 5th gear. When we crawled under it, the line from the master to the slave was broken off at the slave. We've replaced that and tried to bleed it. Only get a drip out of the master cylinder. (He's going to pick up a new one or rebuild kit tomorrow.) We even disconnected the line at the master cylinder and still only a drip. In addition, the bell housing has a crack in it that has a line of oil on it. I don't see how that would cause any of the problems. BUT he had the oil changed at Avis Lube a couple of weeks ago and we can't seem to find the transmission oil filler plug. So OK, I would think if it was a problem involving lack of lubrication that he would have had some whining, grinding, etc. etc. noises before he busted a gear or something? He was able to drive it all the way home in 5th and said no untoward noises. So any ideas? rick schaefer 72 El camino http://members.home.net/jimmy4/rick1972elky.html ACES #00140 Team Chevelle #00038 - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Don Hello All, Just thought I would introduce myself and ask for some advice. My name is Bill, and I live in Louisville, Kentucky. I own a 72 Malibu, and I would like to make some improvements. The interior/body is good, it has a th350 trans, 350 small block (not original), drum brakes (would like disk), Edlebrock performer manifold and Edlebrock carb w/ manual choke. It has a cowel induction hood, so I would like to get cowel induction working on it. My main goal is to make it a 300-400hp daily driver. What do you guys recommend? I don't know that much about cars, but I am trying to learn as much as I can in the process of upgrading my Malibu. I can only spend about $3,000. Any advice would help. Thanks!!! [Chevelle-List] 1972 Chevelle Rebuild
Well, a little bio on me Just getting into cars and decided to buy a 1972 Chevelle from a friend. The body is OK (some mud), but for the price, not bad. It has the stock 350 and I am replacing the Saginaw 3spd with a Turbo 350. Right now, there is no trans in the car and the motor has a whooped cam (minimum). The car has set for the last 6 yrs as a project by the wayside. Luckily, my friend is a body man and is helping with the car. Add that to the motor man in the bunch, I am will be OK. Before the car hits the road, I plan to do some work. If someone can help me with ballpark figures, that would be great... Upgrade to front disc brakes (plan to look in salvage yards) Power Brakes Would like to upgrade to rear disc, but have not seen too many mentions of it... Suspension: shocks, springs, drop spindles Rear end: posi unit with 3.73 gears Rims and tires - street Rims and tires - strip (not a priority) Ignition System Race Exhaust with Cut-outs for open header at the track 15 Gallon Fuel Cell I am 'designing' an engine right now. Trying to find the best bang for the buck. I realize that 11's on pump gas will be difficult, but it may be possible. Even low 12's would be great. I plan to run electric accessories to maximize horsepower gains. Based on my reading, I will most likely stroke the motor on the rebuild. After the car hits the street for awhile, I will debate on the 6-71 blower vs. a big block. IF (more like WHEN) it becomes a full blown race car, I will price the better fiberglass available. As far as my past, you can tell I run with a lot of Mustang guys.. I told everyone it would be an old muscle car, an old wagon, or an 87-93 Mustang Coupe that I would build. Money and convenience landed me the Chevelle. GREAT CHOICE for me If anyone races at Norwalk, send me an email offline. Or if you are somewhat local and know where some great hangouts are, write me offline as well. Kevin M. [Chevelle-List] The X pipe
Did any of you see the article in March Car Craft about the X pipe installation on the mustang exhaust system. It was a horsepower comparision with the H pipe and open headers. The X pipe made 335 hp to323 with the H pipe and 333 with open headers. Open header made the most torque. This is second article I have read about the X pipe. They seem like a good investment compared to the cost.Magnoflow sells it for $80. thru retailer muffler shops.12 hp at the rear wheels increase Any thought s?

Re: [Chevelle-List] Global West testimonies
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I used the GW 12 brake kit on my 71. I also have the PST kit with squeaky poly bushings... Besides the squeaking, I love the setup. My car handles great. I don't race it or anything, but it handles great everytime some jerk pulls out in front of me and I have to swerve to avoid her... e I mean 'them' hehe I haven't done anything to the rear suspension, but just doing the front suspension is a night and day difference. Btw, I used TRW springs on the front, not the ones from GW, but only because I had just bought and installed the front springs before I did the front disc brakes from GW.
