Then if we buy the car back from the insurance company they only give us $ . Would the title cost be $500 or $750 or $1000 etc. I was just asking what the ballpark figure might be. We aren't going to do this, there's no way I would try to repair this car after getting the estimates. It isn't an SS or even a special car. She's set on getting another Elky SS like mine. I was asking the question to get an idea of what we'd have to raise to get he other car. I am very good at researching the "book" value of cars on the web, but as we all know, it doesn't always mean the car is worth that in the real world. Kelly C. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I'm not sure what the value of your el Camino is. I guess what I should have said is that you will probably have to settle for whatever book value is. That's what I had to do. The estimates to repair the damage to my motorcycle exceeded the value of the bike. I settled for book value and repaired the damage myself. Since the lions share of the cost in the estimates I got was labor, what I was able to save in labor costs left me with a surplus. I've been in the auto body industry in some capacity for the past 30+ years so I'm familiar with collision repair. Not every one can do it. If you feel you aren't capable of repairing the damage yourself you may not want to attempt a repair. You have to decide whether you have the ability, resources and time or are good enough friends with someone who has what it takes to repair the car. Having to pay labor for auto body repair drives the cost up in a hurry. It's easy to get in over your head with a wreck. Bill Vander Werf "Kelly C. Re: [Chevelle-List] 1964 Chevelle 2dr. Sedan
Donnie...I think that that price is way too high, your pal metioned how much he has wanted one, and been looking for 10 years , did the seller get wind of this ?? I know I looked for a long time for my car and wound up paying about $2,000 - $4,000 more than I believed it was worth .but I was willing to do that to get a specific year and model that had special meaning for me, not to mention the availability of the car was scarce.the only way I could see your pal paying this price is if the car has some very special signifigance and even then I think he could get it for less. Of course that's just one man's opinion. RE: [Chevelle-List] 1964 Chevelle 2dr. Sedan
There is an old saying in the car hobby "If it's mine, its gold. If it's yours, it's old." I agree with Chuck. The price sounds high. It's all about supply and demand. I would wait a month. Then if the guy still has the car, you have a good case for offering a lower price. If it's gone, keep looking. It's not the last car on earth. It's like a courtship. If you act desperate, you lose respect. It's all about who wants something from the other person. It also depends on your own budget, how much satisfaction you would get from it, and whether or not you care about the "investment potential." John Nasta
Re: [Chevelle-List] 1964 Chevelle 2dr. Sedan
Unless this guy wants the car really, really badly, Donnie, I think the price is too high. Sounds to me like the seller saw the guy coming with his tongue hangin' out (Jeez, I've been looking everywhere for ten years to find a '64 two-doore sedan Chevelle!), and priced the car accordingly. My estimate from the description he provided would be in the neighborhood of $7500-$8500. Of course, a car is only worth what one person will give and the other will take... Still, for that kind of money, a two-door sedan (cheapo 300-series, at that!) should be in pristine condition, and not need any repairs. The reason "everybody has a hardtop" is because not everybody wants a sedan, and as we all know, price is largely dictated by demand. On top of that, '64s just aren't the most highly sought-after by folks who love Chevelles. Maybe in time they will be, since '64 was the inaugural offering, but I wouldn't dig that deep for one now... or even later. Just my .02 worth... Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Thank you for saying that. Of course the vendors can't fit every part onto every car before they sell the parts. It is really up to the manufacturers to make sure that the fit is good before they run off thousands of them. However, when there is a big run like that, I guess the choice is to either try to sell them, do another run and raise the price to compensate, or go out of business. RE: [Chevelle-List] Bad fitting repros
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I looked very closely for bent brackets, etc. When you mount them you will see that you would have to bend the frame in order to move the bumper; the bumper brackets just aren't long enough to be bent that far. Washers won't help; I would need to take 3/16" of metal off the frame, not add metal. Besides, the original bumper fit fine. Eventually, I'll probably rechrome it. Amen to the dash part. I can’t find the plastic either, and would love to find an aluminum replacement. Same with the front grill. That piece being plastic is not cool. I can't find any rust at all on the car. I've been looking for a 64 sedan, everybody has a hardtop, for about ten years. My dilemma is the seller wants $15,000 for it. I've got him down to $12,500. Is there any way that you can tell me if you think this is too steep a price? What do you guys think... is $12,500 too much??? Let me know. Thanks Donnie Gates President Maryland Chevelle Club
RE: [Chevelle-List] nos ebay
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List The only time I was ever burned by an ebay seller was buying parts that were not part of the auction. The guy wrote me saying that he had other parts for my car, and some of them turned out to be crap (described as NOS, badly scratched and caked with mud. I had to wash them in my kitchen sink just to see wht kind of condition they were in. The used ones on my car were in better condition). I wanted to keep a couple of them and return the others, and the guy got adamant that I should return everything. Eventually I convinced him to let me keep the ones I wanted so it all worked out in the end. I didn't post any feedback about the auction and neither did he, although the item that was actually auctioned was fine. Personally, I don't buy anything on ebay any more. I'm too busy to wait a week and then sit up until midnight just to see whether or not I'm going to get a part. Then if there is a dispute, you're pretty much at the mercy of the seller, unless it is somebody who has an established business and wouldn't risk the bad publicity that comes from ripping people off. I have heard too many stories of people never receiving parts, returning parts and never getting their money back, etc. Some people love it though, and occasionally there is actually a bargain to be had. Bad fitting repros? Haven't seen one yet. I have seen a couple of manufacturing flaws though (like the 66 grill emblems I mentioned last night, and the 65 headlight bezels that are coming scratched from the factory). I'll be the first one to tell the customer if there is an issue like that, rather than have it returned and have the customer disappointed. RE: [Chevelle-List] Rear Tire Size
I don't think it's inversely related. The effective section height is directly related to whatever aspect ratio tire is chosen - regardless of the section width. One has nothing to do with the other UNTIL they're combined. That is, a 275mm section width can come in a 35, 40, 45, 50, etc aspect ratio thereby determining the section height. The second part of your question leaves out too many variables. What were the ORIGINAL gears in the rear and does the TH400 have the correct speedo gear for the original rear and/or the 3.55's? Then you have to know the exact 15" tire diameter and the exact 17" tire diameter. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html will calculate the difference in your speedo between two tire sizes - assuming the starting tire (a 15" in this case) is causing the speedo to read accurately. The narrower, but taller tire will give more fender clearance. This will also affect the final drive ratio - something else to consider when drastically changing tire sizes. RE: [Chevelle-List] Rear Tire Size
P275/40R17 is 25.7" tall with a 4.3" sidewall, the P275/70R17 is 32.2" tall with a 7.6" sidewall. In this case, it's the sidewall difference (aspect ratio) that gives it the added height. I suggest you visit http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html and compare different tire/wheel sizes. The 275/40 tire calculates to 275mm x .40 = 109mm (4.3" - about); the 275/70 using the same formula of 275mm x .70 = 192.5mm and that should be 7.6". Now, add the sidewall height (x2 since you're taking two measurements into account for the overall height) to the rim size of 17" and you get 17 + (4.3" x 2 = 8.6") for 25.6" (a tenth off). The 70 series would be 17 + (7.6" x 2 = 15.2") or 32.2". Voila! Now, which tire will fit is determined not only by the height of the tire but the width and backspacing of the rim. RE: [Chevelle-List] Choke help
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Jeff, I don't see your particular carb. in the book. The book is more about rebuilding and modifying q-jets than identifying them. It does have exploded diagrams of the 4G/4GC (used from 1952-67), the M4ME (1981-86), the E4MED (1985-86), the E4ME (1981-86), and several 2bbls & monojet carbs. It also goes into great detail about metering, jetting, and other ways to modify a Q-jet for max performance for your car. For instance, you can figure out the max air flow requirement of your engine by ((CID x max-RPM) / 3456) x volumetric efficiency. So, if you 350 w/ a max RPM of 7000 and 100% volumetric efficiency, the formula is ((350 x 7000) / 3456) x1 = 709 cfm. This is a great book. Everybody who likes to work on their own Q-jet should own a copy IMO. "Rochester Carburetors" ISBN 0-89586-301-4 by Doug Roe / Berkley Publishing. I also have an exploded diagram of the 4MV, which is probably what you have (and is not in this book). I posted it at: http://johnnasta.com/6898/resources/1968/carb-4mv.jpg if anybody is interested. For the IE6 users, there is a new feature that automatically downsizes the image to fit your screen. If you put your mouse over the image, you will get an icon that looks like a box with arrows coming out of the corners. If you click that icon, it will expand the image to full size. It's hard to read if you don't expand it. Seems like every time Microsoft makes their software automatically do something, I have to spend an hour figuring out how to disable the wonderful new feature. Re: [Chevelle-List] Rear Tire Size
If you go to this link, there is an RPM calculator that allows you to change tire heights to see what affect it will have on engine RPM. If you don't know how tall your tires are, there is also a tire height calculator, you enter the tire size (ie. 295/50/15) and it will tell you how tall the tire is. http://www.ring-pinion.com/calc-tire.html cYa- Herb - Original Message - From: Mabs, Kenneth To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Sent: Friday, February 22, 2002 7:05 AM Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] Rear Tire Size sorry i didnt know the section height was inversely related to the section width. when using 3.55's and a th400 about how many rpm's would you drop if switching from a 15 in tire to a 17 in? -Original Message-From: Herbert Lumpp [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]Sent: Friday, February 22, 2002 12:59 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Rear Tire Size The reason a 60 will clear better than a 50 is because when you go with a 60 the widest tire available is a 275, where with a 50 you can go to a 295. so who won??? --- Begin Message --- Hi All, We finally did it! My wife and I took the Elky out for some street action tonight, not a ride around the block, but a real drive! There's a whopping 26 miles on the odometer... we even stopped by a local cruise spot. Of course along the way we happened to pull up next to a pretty hot Nova. It was orange with black SS stripes, a 4" cowl hood, and a very nasty sounding exhaust note. We chatted at the stoplight for a minute - he had a 350 (so he says) with an automatic. Natually when the light went green all hell broke loose! Oh well. :) cYa- Herb Lumpp1966 El CaminoACES #3509http://web.tampabay.rr.com/herbsworld/index.htm --- End Message ---

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Ok, for Chevelle: The 1964-65 rear-window-to-trunk panel is $129.95, 1966-67 is $59.95, 1968-72 coupe is $59.95, and 1968-72 4dr is $89.95. For El Camino: 1964-67 is $34.95 and 1968-72 is also $34.95. These are full steel panels and are oversize b/c of the length. Sorry I couldn't look these up last night. It was late when this came up and I've been under the weather the past few days. It looks like I will be taking a ride out to the manufacturer in PA and picking up about 5 SS hoods for local people (including myself) so that we can all save on the shipping. Nice Job Herb. I didn't know we could post pictures here. Some list servers don't allow it because it can blow up digests and some people have text-only mail readers. I guess I finally know what those numbers mean. For some bizarre reason, I always thought the 40, 50, 60, etc. was the width and the 225 or whatever referred to the height. I guess it always seemed to me that the lower the number (40, 50, 60, etc.) the wider the tire. My Nova came w/ 78's and I put 60s on it, which were definitely wider. I'll get it right some day. It's bizarre to me that these numbers are a mix of US and metric, but it's certainly not the most bizarre thing I've ever heard of. John Nasta
RE: [Chevelle-List] 69 Chevelle Rear Window
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List If we are talking about the panel across the bottom the rear window and which extends into the trunk under the trunk lid, these are available at practically any aftermarket Chevelle parts supplier like Year One, National Parts Depot, etc. These are not patch panels, it is one complete assembly. I am referring to 68-69 Chevelles. Not ceratin about any other years or El Caminos. As for "patch panels", it would be nice to have a front fender patch panel for the front half of the wheel well on 68-69's. After the lower rear half of the fender is shot, this is the next place to go. It has a lot of compound curves so it makes it difficult to replace. >From: "John Nasta" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] 69 Chevelle Rear Window >Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 00:20:15 -0500 > >Hey Tom, maybe you can provide a model for me. My bad, the original example was for a 205/65/15 and since the discussion was centered around a 275/40/17 I changed the numbers to match, but I neglected the numbers in the text! The rear deck, inside the trunk and the the entire corners are rotten. I thought I saw a repro for where the window meets the trunk, but the deck is a lost cause. I guess I will have to find a sheet metal show who can do that for me. I guess I will look into them making the custom aluminum dash I want also. No repros for the plastic dash bexel either. Whoever comes out with that one first is going to make a killing. There are no repro deck panels for it unfortunately, so I had to fabricated some pieces from sheetmetal and weld them in place of the old ones. Those vinyl tops get ya everytime!! THe lower corners were totally rotted away, along with a good portion of the deck surface. Alot of times the part of the 1/4 panel in that area is rotted out as well. Tom
