[Chevelle-List] Checking Plug Wires

2002-03-25 Thread Larry Williams

I had a set of Mallory wires on my car and called the factory
to inquire on how to check if they are still good. I was told to check the
resistance with an ohm meter. Those wires were supposed to be 100 ohms per
foot. You have to check with your factory for the spec.

Start by listing all the components of the engine. Have
you already decided on a cam, intake, CR, etc. yet? If
you pick a fairly common combo your engine shop or other
BBC drivers might be able to give you a good guesstimate.

Make sure the TH350 or TH400 you get has the Chevy bolt
pattern and not the BOP pattern. The Chevy pattern
features a peak (^ shape) at the top of the housing
while the BOP pattern is bowed between the 2 top bolt
holes.

You can just grab them while the engine is running.  If you get the pi**

:-)))

Another cheap way is to watch the engine bay in the pitch dark.  If you see
sparks on/thru/around the wires, they are bad.  :-))

Happy troubleshooting!

Hello

When painting a 1964 Malibu SS, using the Factory Code Number 916, Daytona
Blue Metallic, does anyone have any suggestions as to specifics as to keep as
close to original as possible? Such as clear coats, types of paint. Just
wondering because you can paint with Imron, Enamel, Clear Coats and various
types of paint. I want to get a paint job that is as close to original as I
can.
Also interested in undercarriage of car. Was the undercarriage of the car
painted and if so, was it a flat black, gloss black, or what? Would it be
better to paint it with a gloss black and then spay and undercoating for rust
prevention in Illinois?
I got a long way to go before I get to paint, but just doing my research
now, so looking for advice.

Never heard of spaying to prevent *corrosion*... ;^)

Are you going to tear the car down to the bare frame or
are you looking to paint the frame while still
assembled? Lots of people swear by the POR products
from Restomotive Labs, and if you can find an oven big
enough you could even consider powdercoating.

I have a magazine article that covers the frame-off
restoration of a '67 GTO. The owner/restorer went so
far as to use bondo on the frame to create a totally
smooth surface, among other details.

Yes, I check my plug wires that way all the time. If
they all check out OK (low resistance), the insulation
is in good shape, and there's no arcing/leakage
(observed with the engine running after dark) I consider
them good to go. Resistance will increase with wire
length so the long ones will read slightly higher than
the short ones.

You can also check spark plugs this way. It's not so
much the actual resistance observed but the uniformity
of the readings. Of course, if a person was unlucky
enough to get 8 bad plugs... ;^)

Lojac,Don't bet onnot massaging the drive
shaft. The 350 and 400 came with a short and long tail shaft. The 350
WILL handle a big block but it has to be in good condition. But I
wouldn't recommend it unless it was rebuilt for your application. And the torque
converter must match the torque of the engine. The 350 has 4 multi - disc
clutches and 2 roller clutches. The 400 is the best choice. It has 3 multi -
disc clutches, 1 one-way clutch and 1 roller clutch, detent
solenoid,
and vacuum modulator to sense engine torque
controlling line pressure. This alone makes it better over the 350. All torque
requirements are met and you get the right shift points. Look for these codes on
the 400

1972.. CD,(402), CF(454) CR and

These are all big block 400's. If you have a code
you can't figure out I'll be glad to help. I have worked at GM Hydra-matic for
the past 28 years. If I don't know the answer I can find out for you. One last
comment, and this is my opinion only. The 350 was and still is a great
transmission. It just wasn't built to take the torque of the muscle era. If you
want a trouble free cruiser it can't be beat.

the driveshaft will need to be

I agree and I like the lacquer finish over a 2 step base coat clear coat paint. I have seen many very nice base coat clear coats. Still on a personal opinion think lacquer is just number 1 with a beautiful glass finish that cannot be matched. But I also know lacquer is an unforgiving finish to chips, long term maintenance, etc., whereas the 2 step paints are just so durable.

2002-03-25 Thread Ken's Email
Well the wife and I are going at it. I may have too many cars. I have the following:
- 1967 Chevelle SS (numbers matching) frame off
-1967 Chevelle Malibu with 283 (was gonna but in a 383 and 350 turbo trans)
- 1957 Chevy Belair (wife likes this one)
- 1986 CJ-7 with 4 cylinder anemic engine (great condition and only 56,000 miles)
I think I will sell the 67 Chevelle Malibu, and 86 CJ-7 Jeep.
Keep the 67 Chevelle SS and 57 Chevy Belair. Both are worth more.

According to my SS restoration guide - All 64 - 72 Chevelle's were painted
in lacquer from the factory. The nice thing about lacquer is it's quick
drying - so paint flaws during painting could be easily sanded / touched up
- and numerous light coats is better than any heavy one. If you use a
base coat / clear coat you can end up with a nice durable finish in the
factory color, but it's not the way it came from the factory. It comes
down to how pure do you want to be.

original paint and decals still intactlooks pretty good and it's only $3750.
It's on a lot on Garland

been desmogged a bit as there are a few missing connectors at the water neck.
AIR is still intact and the engine looks unmolested. Interior is very good
except for the dash which has a couple of cracks, seats have been redone and are
excellent (burgundy color)but it's not bad for that old a car. Bed looks
decent and has a rubber mat in it like mine. Front spoiler is intact and the
gauges are really nice. From what I could see the odo said 54k, but I figure
that's 154k

Is this an easy swap or complicated? I have been doing some
reading on the web about having to shorten the drive shaft because of the
length of the TH400. Is this true? I was also wanting to use a
TH700is this any different from doing the swap with the TH400???

Thanks,

the crossmember is the same, if you go to a TH400 just move it back to the next
set of holes. the range select lever is the part on the side of the
tranny that moves to change the gears.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Four Speed to Automatic

2002-03-25 Thread Mark Weber

Lojac,
The
TH400 and TH700 are different lengths.
You
will need to shorten the drive shaft if you go to a th700.Not sure of the
length, people will tell you to "measure your car".
The
trans tunnel on thepass side at the firewall will need to be dented in a
bit for clearance with a TH700. Not a big deal but a mod was required on my
1971.
The
trans cross member needs to move if going from a TH400 to TH700. There were
existing holes in my frame I used. It sounds like some frames have correct holes
and some people can use one existing hole and drill another on each
side.
The
TH400 trans cooler lines I purchased work on my TH700.
If you
go from a three speed auto on the floor to a 4 speed, you can change the console
face plate and shift detent plate to one for the 4 speed. Year one sells the
kits, I think they are about $100.

Mark

well i think knowing you that she didn't do to bad either.when we got married i had a 65. she loved that car. then the gas crunch hit and two of out three cars went bye bye.we let the 65 chevelle ss and 64 impala ss go; keeping the brand new POS 340 Duster.(boy did i make a mistake).
hey are you coming down for the swap ? let me know so we can hook up. also have you given it any thought about our club event in june ?also did you see the 65 convert parts on team chevelle for sale ? nice hearing from you.
