Re: [Chevelle-List] how safe is it to flare your own brake lines

2002-04-08 Thread Michael Pell

I replaced all of my brake lines with stainless steel break lines from
http://www.inlinetube.com/ , and I bought their flaring tube (Rigid brand
name).
Further, I used single flare. Do you need to do the double flare? I'm pretty
sure the factory only used a single flare.

Only 1 connection leaked, and it only needed tightened. It really isn't that
difficult, and I'd suggest you custom build your own break lines.

As long as each connection seals, and you don't kink any of the lines, you
should be fine. I don't see where it wouldn't be safe.

Also buy a small tubing bender for nice bends. :-)

Re: [Chevelle-List] 69 SS Dash Bezel

2002-04-08 Thread Michael Pell

Craig, I'd agree with Josh, up to $150 for a nice bezel. Gauges
with the console will raise the price, especially with a tachometer.
I've seen $500 price tags at swap meets for restored bezels with the tach.
You probably already know where they tend to crack/break. Watch
the windshield wiper switch mounts, they often break. They're easy
enough to repair with JBWeld though. Each of the mounting screw
holes are typically places that crack also.
A radio delete plate is a nice score too. If you don't want it,
someone will.

RE: [Chevelle-List] how safe is it to flare your own brake lines

2002-04-08 Thread Dave Studly

I flared my own lines for the front brakes on my car this past summer. Been
over 100 MPH lots of times (mostly at the drag strip) and I'm still here..
:-)

Just make sure to inspect your flares when you are done. When I was doing
mine, the first flare or two that I made weren't good, and you could see
it -- there were little cracks around the edge of the flare. Make a few
practice flares on a scrap piece of line before you do the ones for your
car.

The Hooker Comp Part# 2455 fits very will on my '69 with BBC and
manual transmission. I'm very pleased, I didn't have to
modify them to fit, and nothing hits. I have a used set for sale,
although I may have just sold them.

I got new ones from Jet-Hot, using the Team Chevelle discount.
$330 shipped to my door, coated. Ask for Chris if you call

I almost tried the Dynomax from AutoZone. They're much cheaper,
but I already had the Hookers on order before I learned of this.

[Chevelle-List] 64 Malibu SS

2002-04-08 Thread Travelback4u
Hello

I wrote to you sometime ago about my 64 Malibu SS which I owned back in 1972, which the gal pulled out in front of me in her MG. Well, ever since July 6, 1972, when my 64 Malibu SS went away...I've looked thru out the Central Illinois area for one like it. A dark blue, light blue interior, hard top with the 283 4bbl. I know all you hot rodders don't find that impressive, but that was my first car, back when no money was available to do much else.

Well, I'll be 48 this May 9th, and thanks to a lot of great people on this list, I'm told I may have the 64 Malibu SS Hardtop delivered to my door by that date if scheduels hold, baring anything unforseen. The car is a solid Arizona car which compared to all the restoration projects I have looked at, has an extremely little amount of rust and being bought from a great guy. Lots of communication and well, somewhere around 28 photos. He even lifted the car on a hoist and took a bunch of photos of the undercarriage for me.

So in just a couple of weeks, I'll have the car sitting here in my "recently cleaned out garage"which included telling the wife her car will have to sit outside for sometime. LOL I didn't happen to mention how long . or how long it will take to restore.

I don't know who is more excited, me or my 14 year old son Jeff. It's going to be a great year...

Wondering if some of you might take the time to look over the following and tell me what your opinion.

re: Paint
 Restoration Questions/Items needed below

I got a lot of questions, "a nervous novice" LOL ...

Needed: Set of Mint/near Mint 64 Malibu SS Mag Hub Caps. Have 65 SS Hub Caps I won't need.
 Rear Antenna and installation kit.
Possibly a hood. (The hood on the 64 SS has hood pins that were added to the hood, that I'm not sure if I want to keep, since not original). "Any Opinions".
 Factory Air Cleaner for a 64 SS with a 283 4bbl.
Pair of 64 SS rear quarter panel emblems. 65's are a bit different.
Source for: Delco Tar Top Repro Battery

Question: Anyone ever do a change over from front fender to rear quarter panel mount installation for the antenna on a 64 SS??? I like the rear mounted better, but car has it on front fender. Since this was an "option" in 64, "from what I have been told" I didn't think that this would hurt keeping original. Any opinions?

Question: Anyone know what brand and size of tire was factory original? Does anyone know what tires looks and fits the car best?

Question: What parts on the engine operation should remain original "Delco" manufacturer? Dist. Cap, Starter, Water Pump, Coil, Battery, Plug Wires, Carb, Plugs, ect.

Question: If Chrome kit added on engine, Changing out Air Cleaner, Valve Covers, Oil Cap, ect., does this help or hurt the value of the car when bringing back to factory original? As long as those parts changed out are kept with the car, wouldn't the value be improved?

I told ya, I'm a novice with alot of questions.

Ok, here goes. I'm really undecided about which way I should paint the 64 Malibu SS. On one hand, Laquer is original but expensive. The base coat/clear coat is cheaper, but not original.

I know the Laquer would look better, and if money was there, that is how I would do it. Mainly because it is what was originally on the car. However, I'm afraid if I paint the car with base coat/clear coat, the overall value of the restoration will be greatly decreased if I "ever" resold it. I'm going to be keeping the car a long time, but I'd hate to think about not restoring it as "original".

So I'm in a pickle. On top of this, I've not painted a car for nearly 20 years, and never Laquer, so I'll have to hire it done. That means spending $4,000.00 on a paint job. And well, I'm on permanent disability, so, well, that means fixed income. So raising that money for paint would take me a long time and well, I don't want to waite that long, while at the same time I don't want to stray from doing a original restoration.

RE: [Chevelle-List] how safe is it to flare your own brake lines

2002-04-08 Thread wbainey

I flared my own brake lines for my sbc/BMW conversion. I used a cheap single
flare tool. I practiced a few times until I had it figured out(much easier
off the car on a bench). I did have one flare that split while flaring on the
car. I cut that piece and reflared. Be sure not to kink the line, check your
flares at least twice to make sure no cracks or splits are present. put it
all together and pump the crap out of it and check for leaks. I periodically
checked the connections a few times the first month of driving.

I used single flare and YES the Factory did use DOUBLE FLARE. This is
not a good practice. nore a safe one. a 37 degree preasure line. need's
duouble flaring. only 45 deg, AN fittings you can get away with single
flare. I know you have done it, I know it my work. BIMO you are WAY OUT ON
THIN ICE.
Yes double flaring steel is a BEAR and Stainless steel a BIG BEAR, but it
can be done right with the corect tools.
OR the other option's are getting pre flared lines and roll up the excess
or. get new pre bent lins from one of the many dealers. or practice paractic
parctice on scrap till they come out OK.
If it's sounding like I am yelling I am, WHY? becaues this is a SAFTEY
issue. and single flared 37 deg. High preasure line are improper engineering

Further, I used single flare. Do you need to do the double flare? I'm

Only 1 connection leaked, and it only needed tightened. It really isn't

As long as each connection seals, and you don't kink any of the lines, you

Also buy a small tubing bender for nice bends. :-)

I am making an engine swap, the six cylinder and

Where can I find these mounts? (frame and engine block) And how can I

I am also wondering about linkage for the 350

looking for engine mounts to put the 327 in the 1964 chevelle. I have made all
my local phone calls and no one can help. Where can I find these mounts? (frame

The Hooker Comp Part# 2455 fits very will on my '69 with BBC and
manual transmission. I'm very pleased, I didn't have to modify
them to fit, and nothing hits. I have a used set for sale, although

I got new ones from Jet-Hot, using the Team Chevelle discount.
$330 shipped to my door, coated. Ask for Chris if you call

I almost tried the Dynomax from AutoZone. They're much cheaper,

[Chevelle-List] 64 Malibu SS Hello I wrote to
you sometime ago about my 64 Malibu SS which I owned back in 1972, which
the gal pulled out in front of me in her MG. Well, ever since July 6,
1972, when my 64 Malibu SS went away...I've looked thru out the Central
Illinois area for one like it. A dark blue, light blue interior,
hard top with the 283 4bbl. I know all you hot rodders don't find that
impressive, but that was my first car, back when no money was available to do
much else. Well, I'll be 48 this May 9th, and thanks to a
lot of great people on this list, I'm told I may have the 64 Malibu SS Hardtop
delivered to my door by that date if scheduels hold, baring anything
unforseen. The car is a solid Arizona car which compared to all
the restoration projects I have looked at, has an extremely little amount of
rust and being bought from a great guy. Lots of communication and well,
somewhere around 28 photos. He even lifted the car on a hoist and took a bunch
of photos of the undercarriage for me. So in just a couple
of weeks, I'll have the car sitting here in my "recently cleaned out
garage"which included telling the wife her car will have to sit outside
for sometime. LOL I didn't happen to mention how long . or how long
it will take to restore. I don't know who is more
excited, me or my 14 year old son Jeff. It's going to be a great
year... Wondering if some of you might take
the time to look over the following and tell me what your
  opinion.re: Paint Restoration
  Questions/Items needed below
I got a lot of questions, "a nervous novice"
  LOL ...
Needed: Set of Mint/near Mint 64 Malibu SS Mag Hub Caps. Have 65
SS Hub Caps I won't need.

  Rear Antenna and installation
  kit.
Possibly a hood. (The hood on the 64 SS has hood pins that were added to the
hood, that I'm not sure if I want to keep, since not original). "Any
  Opinions".
Factory Air Cleaner for a 64 SS with a 283
  4bbl.
Pair of 64 SS rear quarter panel emblems. 65's are a bit
  different.
Source for: Delco Tar Top Repro
  Battery
Question: Anyone ever do a change over from front fender to rear
quarter panel mount installation for the antenna on a 64 SS??? I like
the rear mounted better, but car has it on front fender. Since this was an
"option" in 64, "from what I have been told" I didn't think that this would
hurt keeping original. Any opinions?Question: Anyone know
what brand and size of tire was factory original? Does anyone know what tires
looks and fits the car best?Question: What parts on the engine
operation should remain original "Delco" manufacturer? Dist. Cap,
Starter, Water Pump, Coil, Battery, Plug Wires, Carb, Plugs,
ect.Question: If Chrome kit added on engine, Changing out Air
Cleaner, Valve Covers, Oil Cap, ect., does this help or hurt the value
of the car when bringing back to factory original? As long as those
parts changed out are kept with the car, wouldn't the value be
improved? I told ya, I'm a novice with
alot of questions.Ok, here goes. I'm really undecided about
which way I should paint the 64 Malibu SS. On one hand, Laquer is original
but expensive. The base coat/clear coat is cheaper, but not
original. I know the Laquer would look better, and
if money was there, that is how I would do it. Mainly because it is what was
originally on the car. However, I'm afraid if I paint the car with base
coat/clear coat, the overall value of the restoration will be greatly
decreased if I "ever" resold it. I'm going to be keeping the car a long
time, but I'd hate to think about not restoring it as "original".
So I'm in a pickle. On top of this, I've not
painted a car for nearly 20 years, and never Laquer, so I'll have to hire it
done. That means spending $4,000.00 on a paint job. And well, I'm on permanent
disability, so, well, that means fixed income. So raising that money for paint
would take me a long time and well, I don't want to waite that long, while at
the same time I don't want to stray from doing a original
  restoration.Thomas W. Rogers

You are
looking for the actual mount, correct? This is also called a frame stand,
I think. For those of you who think he is asking about motor mounts, he
needs the part that bolts to the frame of the car that the motor mount then
bolts to. My car has the small block stands (swapped from the big block
stands) because otherwise my headers would not go in.
I found
some at a junkyard, so I suggest you call around for some of the larger Chevy
junkyards. I think I paid about $100 for the pair, but this was a long
time ago so it might have been less.

So I would think that there would
be something similar for the '64 models. Maybe try calling Ausley's or
some of the other supplier and they might know what you can use. You can
try searching the Team Chevelle site (http://www.chevelles.com/) to see if this
has been discussed as well.

I looked at that site. They said to measure my mounts to determine which
replacement mounts I needed. I can't do that because I am not looking to
replace mounts, I am looking to find the correct mounts for the 327 and

I think only the 56 and 57 ChevyV-8 was painted red. Not sure
when they went to a "corporate blue" color. Seems that was a trivia
question some time back. If you're looking at pictures, they can be
deceiving. Plus I'm sure there are different shades of "Chevrolet Orange"
depending on whose paint you choose.

Well, now you guys have me concerned!

To answer Dan's question:
"Disc's require about 1000 lbs of pressure and the drums use about
300 lbs. "
From http://www.inlinetube.com/cartalk.htm
A general statement:
What is 45 vs. 37 degree flares?
All factory produced automobiles use the industry
standard which is a 45 deg. double flare using one flare fitting. The double
flare is stronger and needs no support sleeve.
37 deg or AN which stands for army / navy standard is used on military
equipment and non automotive uses. When using
AN on automotive components (masters, wheel cylinders), each AN fitting
must be used with an adapter, a sleeve and
a nut with a single flare.

performance small block replacement crate type engine suppliers and ask them how
I could bolt them to my car. The best answer I got was "they're out
there".

I would love anymore ideas someone could pass
along.

  You are
looking for the actual mount, correct? This is also called a frame
stand, I think. For those of you who think he is asking about motor
mounts, he needs the part that bolts to the frame of the car that the motor
mount then bolts to. My car has the small block stands (swapped from the
big block stands) because otherwise my headers would not go
  in.
  I found
some at a junkyard, so I suggest you call around for some of the larger Chevy
junkyards. I think I paid about $100 for the pair, but this was a long
time ago so it might have been less.

I am making an engine swap, the six cylinder
and powerglide are out and I am looking for engine mounts to put the 327 in
the 1964 chevelle. I have made all my local phone calls and no one can
help. Where can I find these mounts? (frame and engine block) And how
can I besure they will work in a 64?

I am also wondering about linkage for the 350
transmission that is going in with the 327. Is it possible to link up
with the column shifter where the powerglide shifted from. Maybe a
floor shifter would be nice (bench seats , no console) anybody found one
that works well? overday

Whelp,Just an Idea but,you could try a interchange
manual?Find out what other years used the same mount and go from there...Someone
on this list is bound to have one( Manual ).I went to AutoZone today and they
didn't have 69 chevelle motor mounts in there computer or their books, just like
NAPA...the earliest date was a 70 chevelle,so I got those.Should be the same
onesJack

  Thanks Brad,

I exhausted all your information here and have no
leads. How come you just can't buy 327 motor mounts and frame stands for
  a 1964 Chevy Chevelle.

[Chevelle-List] Horn

2002-04-08 Thread Keith Cooper

My horn does not work. I wired it hot to the
battery and no honk honk. Does anyone have a horn for a 1971 Chevelle that they
want to get rid of. I need a horn to let people know that they are too close or
get out of the way, a Chevelle is coming through.

I think in 71 they changed the 454 decal, so that it wasn't the crossed
flags anymore. It uses very large white numbers. I'm assuming you're
talking about air cleaner decals.

Don't see the crossed flag 454 decals for the 71 on Year One's web site but
they have it for the 1970. No picture shown, are they the same? Anyone
know another source for this decal?

I hear that!...I kid around with my 9yr old son
about that...I tell him,"Notice how all the cars are getting out of our
way,Jackie Boy"?...he looks pretty astonished because they usually do!...Wait
till he figures out that I say this when we're in the passing
lane!...lol!...Anyway...Did ya ground the horn good when ya tried it? When I
tested mine,I put the top of the horn down on the neg. battery terminal and used
a wire from the pos. terminal to the prong on the horn...if it doesn't work,I
bought a pair of some cool, red, black and chrome one's at a local parts
store...Jack

Thomas
 Build the car
for you and don't worry if you have gone bc/cc paint. The diplomat blue paint
with clear will be a knock out.The rear antena was installed but Dealers many
times when people bought their car new off the lot,and really liked the look of
the rear mounted one better.I took my 64 convert to a body shop last Saturday to
finally get the body done after three years of waiting and one of the things
that I am having done to it is installing the stock rear antenae, and having the
fender filled.MyG.M. documentation I got for the car from G.M. of
Canada, has the original size of tire but I can,t remember,as it is in the shop
and I will check Wednesday when I can go there next.Put chrome on the engine but
keep all the original stuffthat you can switch when ever you want
to.Please yourself don,t worry about us because we'll all drool when you have
finished the car.

  Subject: [Chevelle-List] 64 Malibu SS

Hello I wrote to you sometime ago about my
64 Malibu SS which I owned back in 1972, which the gal pulled out in
front of me in her MG. Well, ever since July 6, 1972, when my 64 Malibu
SS went away...I've looked thru out the Central Illinois area for one like
it. A dark blue, light blue interior, hard top with the 283
4bbl. I know all you hot rodders don't find that impressive, but that
was my first car, back when no money was available to do much
else. Well, I'll be 48 this May 9th, and thanks to a lot
of great people on this list, I'm told I may have the 64 Malibu SS Hardtop
delivered to my door by that date if scheduels hold, baring anything

And well, I'm on permanent
  disability, so, well, that
