[Chevelle-List] Chevelle guys are the best

2002-08-26 Thread Chevelle 69
Title: Message

I had
a young man named Dave from Cincinatti come over to my house yesterday. This guy
worked with me to finish getting my car body ready to take off the frame. He
worked long and hard on a hot humid day. He wouldn't even let me buy him
lunch.

Together we removed a lot of parts, worked together to
get several stubborn bolts, some of which had nuts turning on the other side due
to rust eating the supports that held them in place. Had to break several
stubborn rusty bolts, but that's to be expected, we got em
all!

I
can't say enough good about this guy. I have met some of the best people that
drive Chevelles in the local area.I do feel like this Chevelle commonality
we have is closer to a brotherhood than anything else.

Wish
me luck guys as I get the body off the frame and move my car ever closer to one
day driving it to cruise-ins to meet my fellow Chevelle brothers and
sisters.

Steve

I just ordered an alum rad from http://www.streetrodstuff.com/Products/157/.
They're $298 now plus (mine was) $21 shipping and $50 for A/T cooling. A couple
of other folks on Team Chevelle have purchased them and I finally took the
plunge - see http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum27/HTML/000460.html.
I talked to Dave Z, one of the owners I think, and we went through the "custom"
configuration on the phone to ensure things were at least ordered
right.

Rich,

I've noticed the same thing. I wonder if the admin of the list tallies daily
message traffic totals? If might be useful to diagnose what is going wrong.
The last time I had this difficulty it was due to a Windows NT front end
server at my ISP provider's end. We switched to a UNIX supported email and
website and the problem went away forever...or at least I thought it did.

Actually I am glad you wrote this. Over the past few weeks the number of

Mike,

Yeah, I'm
worried about mine as well. I was under there the other day looking at 'em
and they sure looked like their best days were twenty years
ago.

Where are you
getting bushings? I ordered front control arm bushings thru the local parts
store - Moog components. I gave a lot of thought to polyurethane bushings
but, after considering what I really use the car for, did not want to risk a
squeak problem. I don't "road race, etc., I just run around down and throw
down the occassional hole shot. If it developed a major squeaking problem,
tho', it would drive me postal. Also, I'm riding on 17" with KDW's so the
ride quality has slipped a bit from the original 14's!

So far, I'm
going with factory original parts but, as I just ordered the stuff last
night, I'm not "bacon" just yet. I'm open to ideas on the fronts or
rears.

I'm not done yet. Work keeps getting in the

I've pulled the rear end out completely,
installed the bushings, and have to clean and paint it. With current work and personal commitments, it'll be
another month before it's back on the road. I'm pretty confident that this
was the source of my vibration problem. With the driveshaft disconnected,
the shocks and springs out, and one upper arm removed, I could twist the
rear end about 6" by pushing down on one axle end. The original bushings
  were mush.

I have a similar problem with my 67 SS. I

The vibrationstarts around 60 MPH. It feel strange and I think
it's the rear end rocking side to side on mushy bushing. I'm in the

  As you
probably know, there was no Yellow offered for 98 Corvettes. The closest thing
to yellow was Aztec Gold Metallic. Only fifteen 1998 Corvettes were painted
Aztec Gold Metallic (12 coupes and 3 roadsters) in 3 batches of 5. In between
batches, adjustments were made to the color resulting in 3 slightly different
variations. The color was thence discontinued due to production problems. So,
if your 1998 Corvette has a paint code of 58, it is one of only 15 that were
painted Aztec Gold Metallic. Now, wouldn't that be
  nice?

  For

You know, I went
throught this ordeal earlier this year and here's what I
learned:

One: Aluminum
rads save weight but are not easily repairable.
Two: Copper rads can be fabbed up by
your local rad shop and they'll do all the work, including in and out, for less
than $400. And, when you pick up a stone and it starts leaking, they'll solder
it and you're back on the road.

RE: [Chevelle-List] '67 327 questions (Camaro SS reference)

2002-08-26 Thread bdo_chevelle

The '67 and '68 smallblock Camaro SS was powered by a
350, not a 327. When the 350 came out in '67 the only
Chevy it was available in was the Camaro SS.

Years ago I picked up a '67 EA-coded 327/275 for my
since-sold '68 Camaro convertible and was told it came
from a Chevelle. IIRC I also did a little book-digging
and came to that same conclusion.

Brad O.

There was no 210hp 327 available in 67 Chevelles; there was a 210hp 327 in
the Camaro but it had a MA engine suffix code. The SS327 would be a
Camaro since the 67 Chevelle SS specified the 396 minimum (at least in the
US) but the Camaro could be ordered with SS trim and the 327. BTW, the EA
code was used from 65 to 68 327/275 w/o heavy duty clutch in Chevelles.

[Chevelle-List] Opinions= Powerglide or 350 Turbo for 67 Chevelle Malibu

2002-08-26 Thread Ken's Email
Hi:
I seek an opinion on the following subject.
I have a 67 Chevelle that had the original 283 engine with powerglide transmission. I have replaced the 283 engine with a 383 stroker engine. Like it already. The original powerglide transmission is still in the vehicle and works good. I also ran across a
350 Turbo Transmission. It needs a little work.
Question: If I am using the 67 Chevelle as a cruiser (not racing or hotdogging) should I keep the current powerglide in the 67 ? Does a powerglide work better gearing wise on a highway versus a 350 Turbo. I have heard the 350 Turbo will make a big difference on acceleration and performance but what about highway travel ?

The TH350
(3-speed) is a better highway transmission than the Powerglide (2-speed). The Powerglide

You're not going to see
any difference at cruise speeds because both transmissions end up with a 1.00

2002-08-26 Thread Michael Pell

Both have the same final drive gearing of 1:1, so once you're up to speed,
they are basically the same.
Go with the TH350, IMHO anyway. You'll be happier with 3 gears
instead of 2. I've had both, and like the TH350 much
better. Heck, fuel mileage might even improve a bit. The 1st
of the PG is long and high. Takes a lot of engine effort to get up
to speed. Think of riding your old 10sp bike. Ever start
out in 10th gear from a stop? The tall 1st of the PG has a similar
effect, not that it tires your engine, just takes more effort to get there
(i.e. likely more fuel).
Besides, now you can set aside the PG in case you ever want to put the
car back to original
good luck!

[Chevelle-List] Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 13:44:32 -0400

2002-08-26 Thread Craig A. Ellis

By the way, those of you who have tried
to glue the rear bumper pad back on your '70 Chevelle bumper know how hard it is
to get the old glue off the pad. I did mine the other day and used one of the 3M
pads that is like plastic steel wool that you can stick on a 90 degree die
grinder. About, oh, maybe 2 and 1/2 inches across. It took the glue off in about
three minutes and left a nice rough surface for the fresh glue. Ten minutes
later the job was d-o-n-e.

RE: [Chevelle-List] '67 327 questions (Camaro SS reference)

2002-08-26 Thread 396guy

Dunno about what was required with the SS package on 67 and 68 Camaros but
my Chilton's shows no less than 8 327's for 67 Camaros (incl a few 210hp
models) and 2 for 68 Camaros as well as various 350's for both years. An
EA coded 327 is from a 65-68 Chevelle.

Chilton shows:
67/68 Camaro 327 3 or 4 speed (210hp) MA
67 Camaro 327 w/ex. EM (with exhaust emission) MB
67/68 Camaro 327 PG. (210hp) ME
67 Camaro PG w/ex. EM MF
67 Camaro 327/275 3 or 4 spd (275hp) MK
67 Camaro 327 3 or 4 spd w/ex. EM ML
67 Camaro 327 PG (275hp) MM
67 Camaro 327 PG w/ex. EM MN

MS, MT, MU and MV were 350 suffix codes for 67/68 Camaros.

The SS327 text was pulled from the original poster of the question.

 Brad O.

There was no 210hp 327 available in 67 Chevelles; there was a
 210hp 327 in
the Camaro but it had a MA engine suffix code. The SS327 would be a
Camaro since the 67 Chevelle SS specified the 396 minimum (at
 least in the
US) but the Camaro could be ordered with SS trim and the 327.
 BTW, the EA
code was used from 65 to 68 327/275 w/o heavy duty clutch in Chevelles.

Kelly right,. The ZZ4 Has angle plug heads and D shaped exhaust ports. Headman makes a few applications with the D

Looks like I stand corrected on that. I thought they didn't have them since both the pictures and descriptions of the ZZ4's on all the crate engine catalog pages (including Chevrolet's own) do not reflect that it has angled plug heads. I'm sure all of you that have them can't be wrongjust goes to show you that you can't trust catalogs.

[Chevelle-List] 1970 Chevelle / El Camino front fender differences

2002-08-26 Thread John Nasta

Can somebody tell me what exactly are the differences between 1970 Chevelle
and El Camino front fenders? I previously thought that the EC fenders were
longer, but I see that the headlight doors are also specific to each model,
so length can't be the only difference.

I have a 1970-72 Chevelle fender lower patch panel here, and I see that
there is a separate listing to fit 1968-72 El Camino *and* 1968-69 Chevelle.
I have a 69 El Camino, and I can see that the fenders on my car are shorter
behind the tire than the 70-72 Chevelle. So, apparently there is some
difference in the length of the fender behind the tire as well as a
difference up front around the headlights. Does anybody know what the
difference is in the headlight area?

Thanks,
John Nasta

RE: [Chevelle-List] rear end question

2002-08-26 Thread Dave Studly

No. It's too wide, and the control arms won't bolt up. For the front
brakes, you can use B-body parts, but you'll need Hotchkis or Global West
upper A-arms to make it work. You'll need a too-fat shim pack to get it
aligned if you try to use the stock upper a-arm.

As for the wrong bolt pattern, asking for '90 Camaro 1LE brake rotors will
get you rotors, with the correct bolt pattern that fit B-body spindles, but
metric threaded wheel studs. I've done this brake swap and it's s worth
the effort.
