Steve,

actually, they all are required to have brakes either electric or surge, most have electric.  they dont make trailers without brakes.  you have to make sure you have a control box for it thoug hother wise they wont work.  if you end up renting, make sure it at least has a breakway switch.  that will lock up the brakes in the event of the trailer breaking loose from the truck

Both Ryder and U-Haul's rental trailers have electric
brakes. Of course the U-Haul ones don't always work and the U-Haul agents don’t
care, but again that is another story.

probably is better .but I doubt all of them have brakes.

I towed a Chevy Cavalier
with a 3/4 truck about 2,000 miles on a tow dolly. Not sure I would want to do
it with anything smaller, the brakes were big enough on that truck to handle
it.

Good point about the tranny plug. In the absence of such, a heavy
gauge Ziploc freezer bag and a thick rubber band is a decent second choice.

Tom, you did the right thing leaving the engine running w/
the automatic. That is what saved the transmission. You didn't mention that earlier
though, and it’s not very practical for a long trip. It's better to just remove
the driveshaft, and it only takes a couple of minutes (literally).

BTW, I have
had very bad luck w/ U-Haul trailers. That's a story for another day though. I
find the Ryder trailers to be better, although Ryder not let you pull their
trailer with your vehicle (you have to also rent a Ryder truck). U-Haul will
let you tow their trailers w/ your own vehicle, regardless of how unsafe it may
be.

  Yes, a
full trailer is definitely better, especially if you’re going to be traveling
more than a few miles (literally). For one thing, trailers have their own
brakes. I've towed both my 1968 Olds Ninety Eight and my 1969 El Camino on
trips over 700 miles apiece on trailers. Nothing like having several thousand
pounds of vehicle behind you when you are trying to stop (or even slow down on
the highway), and the tow vehicle wants to keep
  going.

I would
recommend removing the driveshaft and putting the front wheels on the dolly.

Don’t forget
that the steering on a '64 doesn't lock. You wouldn't want those squirrely
(unlocked) front wheels to be the only thing touching the road. You also
wouldn't want to burn out the transmission, which is what will happen if you
leave the driveshaft in.

Howdy,

I'm
going Thursday to bring home my 64 Impala, and will be using a car dollie. What
is the general consensus on the correct way to use it. Front or rear wheels on
ground, if rear wheels, disconnect driveshaft or not? If front wheels, steering
wheel locked or unlocked? I will be traveling about 200 miles, all but about 2
of these miles will be highway. I've never done this before, and would

I just
bought a used one. The paperwork says for a rear wheel drive to put the rear
wheels on the Dollybut I would think that if the drive shaft was
disconnected it wouldn't matter.

In
fact the thought of towing a car backwards might freak out some old lady and
give her a heart attack thinking she was in the wrong lane.

I'd
tow with front wheels on myself. That's what I plan on
doing.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Alternator conversion

2002-10-08 Thread Spencer, Darrell

John,

I seem to recall that a diode is needed in this application. The ignition
circuit still sees voltage from the alternator (which is still spinning
after the switch is turned off). I don't have the schematic handy, and
don't remember where the diode is used. Funny thing is, I did this
conversion on my '66 El Camino several years ago and did not run into the
problem. My idiot light works and every thing! Go figure. I believe there
is a Tech article on the Team Chevelle website on this topic. Worth a look.
