Re: [Chevelle-List] Changing Engines
Steve I had the same problem trying to figure out what to do with my 10 bolt rear end. Finally after much research into a 12 bolt or 9 I took it to my local shop that had a great reputation for building rear ends. He put an auburn posi it new all new bearings and new axles. I have a 327SB with about 340hp but want to upgrade to a 396 BB one day. He told me not to worry about that rear end it will take 500-600hp and guaranteed it. Cheaper than the other options worth looking into. Re: [Chevelle-List] Changing Engines/10 bolts
I will also chime in here... I really believe that 10 bolts can be made to work for alot of people who run 12b's or 9"s. Most of my experiences are with a 8.5 10 bolt, but I think a similar built 8.2 would with stand a stock-ish BBC fine. Especially if it only sees street duty. The latest build... My buddy and I built up a 10 bolt 8.5 with Precision Gears, Auburn, aftermarket cap on the driver's side, and reinforcing diff cover from LPW. It has lived approx. 50 passes thus far onhis 1984 ungutted Buick Electra Station Wagon (yes complete with cheesy wood panel trim :P) The car runs 11's on cheater slicks all day long and weighs in at over 5,000 lbs. It has a 12 to 1 496 under the hood. So far the rear end hasn't battered an eye despite the weight, power, or bite. IMO that is impressive results for the ole 10 bolt. Re: [Chevelle-List] new to the list
Gary, Any chance you're looking for engine parts? I have a '64 4-bbl intake (E 5 4 date, 3844459 casting) and a set of ordinary small-valve (1.72/1.50) heads taking up space in my basement. Even if you don't need them the mere fact that you have a '64 makes them more valuable to you than to me. I work at FABCO so shipping would be, uh, non-existent. ;^) Email me offlist at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you're interested. Will consider trades for Pontiac parts and/or Pizza Extreme pizza. ;^) Was this a local acquisition? I read the State Journal classifieds somewhat regularly and don't recall seeing a '64 convertible recently. What's the story? Since you're in the area I assume you're aware of the Jefferson swap meet and the other events put on by Madison Classics. Keep an eye on www.jeffersonswapmeet.com for info. Brad O. Re: [Chevelle-List] Vin Numbers
Dan, IIRC the engine code started appearing in the VIN sometime in the early '70s. VINs from earlier years simply indicated the number of cylinders unless the VIN indicated a specific model for which only 1 engine was available, in which case you'd know the engine by default. Are you wondering about your Impala? Brad O. Does anyone on this list know how to tell exactly what motor came in a GM car? Other than having the build sheet, is there anything in the vin that would help. All I've ever seen from the Vin tag is the number of cylinders. I've read discussion threads saying that most all of the body tags say V8. Mopars and Fords seem to have this info displayed prominently. Is The General keeping this info secret for some reason. [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster install
Well, good news! Ron is back to work on my 69 El Camino. He says the glass is back in and he's going to block it one more time and put another coat of primer on. My question is, what's the procedure for having a shop install Flowmasters? Do I need to buy them and bring them to the shop? I was hoping I could just buy them myself and bring them to the local Meineke or whoever bends their own pipe. Right now all I have on the car is two open pipes that end underneath the floorboards. I'm thinking about the three-chamber version because it's not a race car, but I do want it to have a little bit of a rumble. I have a friend who has the two-chamber Flowmasters on a 70 SS clone, and it's too loud for what I want (although he has a 454 and I have a 283, but still). John Flowmaster makes a kit you can bolt directly up. It's called the American Thinder System. It's a 2.5 H-pipe setup, you can get it with or w/o the mufflers. i have it on my 70 and it fit very nice. I had the whole thing installed in about an hour. Any good muffler shop can do the job if you take them the new mufflers. It may be cheaper if you get the shop to get them, ya never know, they may get them at wholesale cost. Re: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster install
John, thats what i have done in the past (brought my own muffs in) i had one shop complain that he was not going to make any money on the mufflers if i did that, BUT THEN I JUST WENT SOMEWHERE ELSE. if you are worried about flow i would go to a regular fab shop who could put madrel(? spelling) bent stuff on for you- i have seen some pretty restricted stuff come out of muffler shops (like on my v8 s10). there are also diffrent thickness of pipe and kinds too, aluminized, stainless (this does not rust but i heard it turns brown from the heat and looks like rust) also some swear by h- pipes. my engine builder told me that he has found they just cut down the noise a little, no real power gains. (??) and also they hang down lower and make removing the trans driveshaft a pain- but they could use fittings here too for that. just some ideas to get you thinking, i/m not sure if all my info is correct but this is what i have been told. RE: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster install
Thanks Tom, Yeah, I see that kit and I can get a deal on it myself directly from Flowmaster. The nice thing about the El Camino kit (17120) is that it comes with the stainless exhaust tips and is pre-bent to exit behind the rear wheel wells. All nicey nicey when done. I guess I'll go that route. It's probably the most efficient and probably even less expensive than buying the mufflers and then paying a shop to bend pipes (and I won't have to worry about trusting some shop mechanic with my newly restored car). Thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear that it fits well and installs easily. John Nasta -Original Message- John Flowmaster makes a kit you can bolt directly up. Re: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster install
For what its worth, I installed the Flowmaster kit for the El Camino on my 70. I installed it in my driveway and it fit like a dream. The H pipe and all pipes are above the frame rails, dont drag. The two pipes that connect to the headers are adjustable and need to be cut to fit. I used a regular pipe cutter for plumbing pipe, three wheels that role around the pipe to be cut. I used the band type clamps from Dynomax. The system came with all hardware and hangers to install. I substituted the Dynomax clamps for the regular muffler clamps. Other than that you got everything needed to install. RE: [Chevelle-List] Vin Numbers
Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] Vin Numbers The 72 Chevelle was the first to have the engine size in the VIN; the 5th digit of the VIN was the key. I don't know about other makes/models, but for Chevelle's there is no way to tell what size engine came the car with one exception - that being the 66-68 SS models (138x7 VIN) designating a SS396. The horsepower rating was still a guess, but it HAD to have come from the factory with a 396. All other years (and 66-68 NON SS models) could only be decoded as a 6-cyl car or a V-8 car - no more/no less. Example, my 67 Elky came with a V-8 according to the VIN (13680) but which V8 (283 or 327) is impossible to tell from the VIN itself. The Protect-O-Plate tells me it came with a 275hp 327 and the engine numbers on the front pad match a 67 327 engine with a correct build date for the car. So, go punch him in the nose :*) FWIW, there are people on the list who swear that a partial VIN was stamped on the front pad as early as 1966 but I think it may have been factory specific. My 67 has a 69 396 engine in it and it does NOT have the VIN stamped on the front pad. My 67 327 Elky (built in Fremont) does not have the VIN stamped on the front pad either. It shouldn't be a problem, just cut the length to fit to your stock exhaust pipe. My point was that it's not a DIRECT REPLACEMENT all the way to the exhaust manifold AND you'll have to weld or band clamp the pipes together which I consider not a typical driveway installation like factory style exhaust. Re: [Chevelle-List] Changing Engines
You are correct Auburn can't be rebuilt is uses cones not clutch discs. Eaton can be rebuilt but uses clutches. I went with the auburn the shop that put mine together said that all he has ever used and never had a problem with one. Either one is a good choice If anyone needs an Eaton posi I have a 10 bolt 8.5 brand new in box with new bearing kit. Re: [Chevelle-List] new list member
Hello everyone I joined the list a few weeks ago and have found it very informative. I bought a 69 back in June at the street machine nationals in Indy, it has all the SS 396 badging but had a 94 centerbolt 350 with TH 400 trans and 3:73 12 bolt posi. I'm pretty sure it's not a real SS since i got it at a good price but i got what i was looking for, a solid body with original floors and trunk in great shape, power steering and brakes, its GM firethorn red with black interior. Anyway it now has a 502 and built 700R 4, I just got it running last weekend and it is amazing to say the least. The other day i read on the list that the rearend is 62 1/2'' OD at the axles, i measured mine last night in preparation for a 9'' and it is 60 3/4'' without the drums, does my car have the wrong rearend or was the gentleman mistaken at 62 1/2''. The other thing is that i put Torque Tech 3'' exhaust on it with 3 chamber Flowmasters and it sounds great I have 2 chambers on my Impala SS with 2 1/2'' pipes and it drones at low RPM, I highly recomend the 3 chambers, great tone but not too loud at least not for my tastes. RE: [Chevelle-List] new list member
Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] new list member Sounds like you have a 67 rear end. The reason I suspect a 67 as opposed to a 64-66 is the way the springs mount. I had a 68-72 rear in my 67 and finally swapped it out a couple of years ago for a 67 unit and nothing else was changed - springs, brake lines, u-joint, shocks, etc. * 1964-67 Chevelle rear ends were manufactured by the Chevrolet Gear and Axle Division. The housing measures 56.5 inches from flange to flange, and with the brake drums in place, the total width is 60.5 inches. * 1968-72 Chevelle rear end housings measure 58.5 inches from flange to flange, and with the brake drums in place, the total width is 62.5 inches Dale McIntosh TC Gold #92/ACES #1709 67SS/67 Elky -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:owner-chevelle- The other day i read on the list that the rearend is 62 1/2'' OD at the axles, i measured mine last night in preparation for a 9'' and it is 60 3/4'' without the drums, does my car have the wrong rearend or was the gentleman mistaken at 62 1/2''

Re: [Chevelle-List] Re:Eaton Posi
The great thing about the Eaton is not only is it rebuildable, but you can change how aggresive it is by changing springs. RE: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster install
Thanks Dale, That should not be a problem. I have two brand new pipes that come down from the x-mans and end under the floorboards, so I have plenty of good pipe to connect to. I guess in the true spirit of a typical driveway installation I should use a coffee can and 2 clamps to make a patch :) John Nasta -Original Message- It shouldn't be a problem, just cut the length to fit to your stock exhaust pipe. My point was that it's not a DIRECT REPLACEMENT all the way to the exhaust manifold AND you'll have to weld or band clamp the pipes together which I consider not a typical driveway installation like factory style exhaust.
