Lt4, Lt1 was a typo. the rating is 335 Hp for 96 Vette engines, as stated by
the spec sheet the local dealer showed me. Probably the reason is LT4's
were not an option engine offered to dealers. It only happened, cause my
ex-bro law worked for GM in Bay area Calif for 32 years and when he ordered
his he managed to have his cradled with a Vette motor ,and also mine as
well, cost us both extra 1,379 dollars though. Was worth it cause she rides
like a Caddy and performs like a sports car. you might never heard of
another option on the Bucket seats, either. I had my buckets, lower
cushions, built up to add support. Factory performed. Little insider trading
Clint. She is low miled and on the block for sale, time for something
different. I'll probably regret selling it but it sets around too much so
I'll let someone else enjoy her for a while, Smitty

[Chevelle-List] Fw: multimeter help

2002-12-04 Thread Rodney.

Hey guys... still battling my alternator problem. I think I have it
figured
out now though (in my head anyway). I just want to make sure I measure the
resistence of my tan wire going to the alternator. I need greater than 35
ohms. I have never really been taught how to use a multimeter, just kind
of
picked it up and learned as I went along. I'd like to run this by some of
you who know what you're doing and see if I'm on the right track.

To measure resistance I think I am supposed to turn the meter to either
(going by memory here, forgive me) 200 ohm, 2k ohm, 200k ohm, 2 M ohm, or
 20 M ohm.

I'm thinking I should set it to 2M, but I'm not sure. Could someone let me
know if this is correct and maybe a quick explination why?

Next, I (after turning off all power in the wire) connect one lead to one
end of the wire and one lead to the other end.

Will the reading say 35, 37, 49, etc. or will it be in decimal like .035?
(remember I'm trying to get 35 ohms of resistance or more)

If anyone could let me know if I've got this down I'd appreciate it!
Thanks! (I'll give more details, updates and pictures of the engine swap,
re-wiring, and flowmaster install once I get my daily driver (which now
hasn't seen the road in 4 weeks (ouch!)) is back on the road!) Sounds
great, but MAN are those 40 series loud! :)

 Rodney.

Kinda like what truck drivers and farmers used to steer their

I run my 70 down to Maryland quite often. It has a 4.10 12 bolt and cranks

Best bet is probably to go with a Gear Vendors Unit. Not cheap, but well

You want the lowest range that will still be higher than the resistance
measured. This gives you the the most accurate reading.

In an analog meter, on a higher range, the needle will swing over so far to
zero as to be indistinguishable from it.

Most digital meters are autoranging -- they only have an ohms setting and
will pick the lowest range to give a mid-scale reading.

On digital meters where you have to set the range, start low and work up
until it no longer displays OV. (You'd want to do the opposite with
voltage and current -- start high and work down.)

Next, I (after turning off all power in the wire) connect one lead to one
end of the wire and one lead to the other end.

Be sure to disconnect one end of the wire from the circuit, or you'll be
reading multiple paths, which will affect the displayed value.

Will the reading say 35, 37, 49, etc. or will it be in decimal like .035?
(remember I'm trying to get 35 ohms of resistance or more)

It will be a whole number.

Steve

Rodney,

When using the anolog meter you want to try to get the needle to swing to
middle range for most accuracy.
So since you are looking for 35 ohms you want the 200 ohm setting.
For reading look at the 200 scale and it should point to 35 ish when you are
reading the wire.

I run my 70 down to Maryland quite often. It has a 4.10 12 bolt and cranks
out 3700 RPMs at 80 mph. I usually keep it there for the duration of the
trip down I-95 and 301 South. It gets awesome gas mileage at that (15 mpg).
Best bet is probably to go with a Gear Vendors Unit. Not cheap, but well
worth it as you get 6 forward gears instead of 4 with a 700R4.

Lt4, Lt1 was a typo. the rating is 335 Hp for 96 Vette engines, as stated
by
the spec sheet the local dealer showed me. Probably the reason is LT4's
were not an option engine offered to dealers. It only happened, cause my
ex-bro law worked for GM in Bay area Calif for 32 years and when he
ordered
his he managed to have his cradled with a Vette motor ,and also mine as
well, cost us both extra 1,379 dollars though. Was worth it cause she

another option on the Bucket seats, either. I had my buckets, lower

And beneath that series is the following : 19K505094

Can't get around the back of the motor to see the casting date serial

 Rodney,

When using the anolog meter you want to try to get the needle to swing to
 middle range for most accuracy.
So since you are looking for 35 ohms you want the 200 ohm setting.
For reading look at the 200 scale and it should point to 35 ish when you
are

[Chevelle-List] Tire Rubbing

2002-12-04 Thread Ron Lew
Hey guys...really need your help on this. I have a 1970 Malibu
convertible and continue to have front wheel rubbing problems. My wheels
are American Racing Daisies (originals) and are 8X15. I really don't
want to get rid of them.

Originally, my front tires were P225/70R15 and rubbed real bad on the
wheel wells. The coils were old, so I installed new ones and waited for
3 months for them to settle (front end was higher that the rear end).
Nothing. I then installed front disc brakes with 2 drop spindles and
P215/65R15 tires. Car sits great, but continues to rub, but not as bad.
The rear tires are P235/70R15 and all the tires are BF Goodrich T/A
radials.

Why does the front end continue to rub? Could it be the 8 wide wheels
on the front? Thanks for your help..Ron.

[Chevelle-List] CS-130 alternator wiring help - LONG

2002-12-04 Thread Rodney.
Hey guys.. I posted this on Chevelle Tech, but I thought I'd post on here
too since not everyone reads Chevelle Tech. This topic is at
http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum22/HTML/002584.html

START QUOTE -

Hey guys.. I need your help. I'm trying to wire a CS-130 alternator (the one
from the 88 Olds Firenza in Techref #14)
First I'll explain the history. About 4 weeks ago I set out to (with the
help of a friend), pull my 307, put in a 350 crate engine, flowmaster
exhaust and rewire the car with a kit from Centech. This was supposed to
take 2 weeks (by my guestimate) BOY was I wrong! This is my daily driver and
it's been off the road now for about 4-5 weeks. Everything is wired and
working great, except for the alternator, the fuel gauge and the stereo. I'm
at my wits end with this and frustrated beyond all belief.

So, I decided I'd work on one thing at a time. Since the alternator is all I
need to get working in order to DRIVE my car, I figured I'd start there.

SO... here's the info I have gathered so far. On the alternator the S wire
goes to the junction block and this is for voltage sensing. The L wire is
the wire that needs resistance and causes the alternator to charge. I don't
have the F wire hooked up to anything.

The way my setup goes is this: From the fuse panel there's a tan wire that
says to gen light which gets 12v with ignition on. This is hooked up to
one side of my idiot light. The other side of my idiot light is hooked up to
the L wire on the alternator plug. Then of course I have the charge post
on the alternator hooked up going to the main junction block.

What happens is this. I turn the key to the ign position and the gen light
comes on like it's supposed to. When I start the car the light stays on and
the alternator doesn't charge.

When I check the tan L wire on the alternator plug with the key in the ign
on position I measure 2.46v and with the car started it was I believe around
9.8v or so.

I was told this alternator should have at least 35 ohm of resistance going
to the L wire. The best option was to use the idiot light as the
resistance and no further resistance was needed.

This is how the car is currently wired and sits tonight.

-

OTHER things I have tried are the following: I tried bypassing the idiot
light and I ran a wire from the tan wire at the fuse panel to a 100 ohm 1
watt resistor connected to the tan L wire on the alternator plug. This
worked for about 2 minutes. I had great charging (14.4v) at the battery in
the trunk, 14.4v at the junction block and 14.4v at the alternator post.
This lasted for about a minute and then the alternator stopped charging.
Since then I have had the alternator checked and it always works at
Autozone. I've had this one tested about 3 times now.

If anyone has any ideas or things to try PLEASE let me know. I'm borrowing a
car of someone else's right now and they're not too happy that this is
taking so long. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Rodney.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Fw: multimeter help

2002-12-04 Thread Rodney.
Thanks everyone for the replies. I left the house early this morning to go
work on my car before I got these replies. I was originally trying to find
the resistance in some resistance wire I got with my wiring kit, but ended
up buying a resistor from radio shack. Once I KNEW what the resistance was
supposed to be, I played with the different settings on the meter and
eventually figured it out. As frustrating as this wiring problem is at
least I'm learning how to use my meter :)

Just a tip for those of you with reference type websites (Dale's comes to
mind first)... if you want some traffic you might consider a tutorial on
multimeters :) I tried doing a search and couldn't come up with much. The
ones I did come up with were over my head and very confusing. A nice,
simple, easy to follow instruction with some pictures would probably draw a
lot of web traffic. Just an FYI.

going to the L wire. The best option was to use the idiot light as the
resistance and no further resistance was needed.

This is how the car is currently wired and sits tonight.

Re: [Chevelle-List] CS-130 alternator wiring help - LONG

2002-12-04 Thread Rodney.
I found that diagram, but I've found 3 other sites that that's incorrect.
Also, I tried it that way and it didn't work at all.

As far as consulting the tech support, I tried that and they spoke in
circles around me. I really had no clue what that guy was talking about.
He didn't sound too sure himself, but he used a lot of electrical jargon
that I'm just not able to follow. Their kits come with a harness for a
12SI alternator and the directions explain how to hook that up. When I
called and mentioned a CS-130 he kind of stumbled and acted like I was the
first one to ever do this or call about it.

I also called Mark at MAD Electrical (some of you may be familiar with his
website... VERY good website if you haven't checked out the tech section yet
DO SO)... and he talked me through my current setup. By all accounts, this
SHOULD work and it's not.

And lastly, there is no fuse for this tan wire at the fuse panel. It does
have 12v though so I know it's okay.

 Thanks for the suggestions.

Verify against this..after checking the fuse:

If that don't get it, consult with tech support at the place you bought
 your wire harness.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Gearvenders under/over verses 700R4

2002-12-04 Thread Eric Senior
Also keep in mind that most 700R4's can't handle the same torque that a
TH400/GV unit can. I've got a '70 SS396 with a 700R4 that works GREAT!

I am also building a '70 vert with a ZZ502. For this project, we were
originally going to go with a 700R4, but found that the 700R4 tops out at
around 450 ft-lbs of torque. My understanding is that the weak link is the
Aluminum input shaft. We decided to switch gears (no pun intended) and
went with the TH400/GV setup.

However one final noteThere are companies that are addressing the 700R4
limitations. Bow Tie Overdrives in SoCal has a modified 700R4 that will
handle up to 600HP. I've already headed down the TH400/GV path, but it
might be worth looking into what you can get from a 700R4 these days.

to
drop them down to around 2000 @ 60 without swapping out rearend.

2002-12-04 Thread Chevelle 69

But have you checked the fuse that's in the circuit's of the F and L
wires?

Also, there is an ol codger that works at Haywire wiring harness
electrical products that I once seen at a hot rod wiring seminar. He
said he takes questions from people all the time and encourages it. Even
if you haven't bought their products.

Their web site leaves a lot to be desired, but some very knowledgeable
people there. I'd try getting support from them. This area is my weakest
area of electrical systems or I'd try to help more.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Tremec 66/67 shifters

2002-12-04 Thread Michael Pell

The TREMEC 5sp will fit in the 68+ tunnels without modification, on the
4sp tunnel cars, other than the shifter opening needs widened a bit.
For the original automatic cars (tunnel), you have the option of dropping
the tailshaft about 3/8" or opening the tunnel up.
Herb, while we're swapping info, how did the shifter linkages fit in
the tunnel of your '66? I've tales of problems there, but don't
know of anyone to confirm for me.
thanks,

Been
thinking about it a while for the O/D feature. The steep 1st gear
won't bother the GR8PMKN as much since it's pretty long legged with 3.07's
anyway and with the O/D, it'd bring the RPMs down to the 2100/2200 range
at 75 mph. My whole concern is my custom console. The Hurst
Comp Plus pretty much dictated how the Plexiglas was formed for the front
portion, i.e., the shifter hole was located and cut specifically for it.
I could have another one formed, but with the "stock" rear shifter location
of the 5-speed (rear and more centered), it'd mean rerouting the power
window wires, stereo amp wire, etc. They fit snugly now between the
shifter and the custom cup holders.I've
also given serious consideration to a 700R4 for convenience but I like
the idea of manually shifting and would have complete control over O/D
with a 5-speed. Plus the added expense of a trans cooler, hooking
the TV cable up to the FI unit, etc. The Tremec would be a no-brainer
swap except for the trans mount and maybe driveshaft length.

2002-12-04 Thread Michael Pell

Come on out Dale! I have one in my garage just waiting to go into
your car! :-)
I don't think the width of your console would be a problem.
The top of the TREMEC is only about 6"-7" wide, and it comes thru the floor
1/2 - 1".
I sold to a guy who installed it into a 67 GS, and used the stock auto
console without any problems. I could call and get some more details
from him.
Dale McIntosh wrote:

6-speeds are about a grand more than the TKO. Trans height is also
a concern for me as the custom console I have is much wider than the stock
one and fits farther down the sides of the transmission tunnel. I
might be able to massage it upwards but not much on the sides. Guess
I may have to wait for someone to install one in a 66/67. Maybe make
a trip to Indy and Mike install it for me. :*)
