There were others ~less known~ than Yenko. Berger, Baldwin-Motion, Fred
Gibbs, Nickey, Data, etc. but apparently Yenko was the only one with
1969 Chevelles that were personalized and became the most remembered.
Camaros were the hot setup from 67-early 70's and they got the attention
from almost everyone.

RE: [Chevelle-List] what's a 1969/70 F41?

2002-12-17 Thread Dale McIntosh
Special Performance - Front and Rear Suspension. I don't have the
literature that describes just what the option consisted of though. I
would suspect heavier springs, shocks, anti-sway bars, etc. There was
also a F40 option that included "..special front and rear springs and
shock absorbers." I think, as Tom said, the F41 got heavier sway bars
as well.

>From the 69 and the 70 restoration kits:
1969 - F40 available on 13000 [any Chevelle model]
1970 - F40 available on 13000 (exc. Wagon)

1969 - F41 available on the 13427-37 (300/300 Deluxe) and 13637-67
(Malibu hardtop and convertible) *but* only with the SS396 option. 1970
- F41 available on the 13637-67 and no note of the SS package being
mandatory.

Both the F40 and F41 are listed in the "Extra Cost Equipment" section so
I can't say for CERTAIN that the SS option automatically got one or the
other or just the opposite; like the 69 F41 required the SS396 option
but maybe the SS396 option didn't automatically get the F41 (or F40 for
that matter) suspension package. I can't imagine not ordering the F40
or F41 if you opted for the SS package, but then again there are a few
3-speed SS Chevelles out there that didn't opt for the 4-speed or TH400
either.

F41 is the heavy duty suspension package.  Usually includes a 1 1/8" front sway bar and a 1" rear sway bar along with heavy duty springs.  I have it on my 70 SS.  Pretty sure it was standard on SS cars and an option on the Malibus.

Harald,

Try http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/chevelle/underhood_02.htm on my 67.
The scoop section of the hood is a bit rough but the "GM" portion of the
underside is finished. BTW, I cut the area out between the front and
rear openings for clearance...the original Glasstek hood has the same
overall support structure as a factory 67 hood. If you were so
inclined, the fabric inserts will even fit. I have since put reflective
heat insulation over the rough scoop portion.

What's the deal w/ these 2 web sites? one says it is the Team Chevelle web

both seem to offer fairly similar content. Why spread the info over 2

John, try this site. It might be what your looking for. Also a question. Do
you sell the little plastic plugs that go into all the body holes? I had to
remove mine when I got the car dipped and most were ruined when I removed
them. If not, do you or someone else on the list know where to get them?
Thanks

Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] 1968 SS wheel well moldings?

FWIW, Just to toss some more fuel on the fire, I checked my GM P&A book
and my CD from Detroit Iron and found the following:

>> I
>> believe they (the '68 moldings) are a one year only part.
>> Here are the numbers listed in the assembly manual:
>>
>> 3920149-50 Molding L. & R.H. 13735-45

Model 13735 is a Concours wagon 6-cyl (13835 is a Concours V-8) but I
don't show a model number 13745 anything in either my GM model reference
chart or my Chevelle deciphering program.

>> 3920153-4 Molding L. & R.H. 13500-600 13837-67-80

Model numbers 13500-13600 are "generic" meaning any Chevelle or Malibu
(135xx and 136xx) while the 13837-67-80 are SS specific. This coincides
with the data from my GM P&A book although the part numbers are
different and that could just be numbers that often get superceded.

My book shows for the front in 8.132 group:
68 Concours - 3928435/436 L.H./R.H. MOULDING UNIT, wheelhouse opening
68 Malibu - 3955683/684 L.H./R.H. MOULDING UNIT, wheel opening (38")

And rear 12.116 group:
68 Concours - 7795053/054 L.H./R.H. rear wheel opening
68 Malibu (Spt. Sed.) - 7795076/077 L.H./R.H. rear wheel opening

I'd almost bet that if you found a P&A book from say 75-76 era that went
back to 68 listings, the part numbers would be different still.

Thanks for the advice Trooper, but trust me when I restored that car, I
coated it with Corroless, primer, paint, trunk spatter paint and clear coat
so it won't be rusting anytime soon. Besides, the car is garaged and doesn't
go out in the rain, intentionally anyways. The underside is coated just as
well. If it were a daily driver that would be another story, speaking of,
I'm looking for another 70-72 to use as a driver.

has it.I have also used it to seal the kick panel vents and the heater

getting progressivley louder, you can rule out rods & mains, you have an
electric fuel pump, so that is out the door.  If it is missing and
running like crap, my guess would be a worn cam lobe.  Could also be a
carbon knock.  The best way to check that is to pull the heads.  If
it is an older rebuild or not rebuilt at all, this is a good
  possibility.Tom

Re: [Chevelle-List] Bad news came tonight...

I had this happen to me on a 305 chevy
pickup. The knock wasn't consistent though. I had a hell of a time finding
it!
But when I took the flywheel off, it came
of in two pieces!
Don

  I'll
bet you it's a cracked flywheel and/or a loose flywheel bolt. Check the
flywheel very carefully with a flashlight. Remove the flywheel bolts (take
note if any seem to be too loose) and look for cracks around the bolt holes
that might be concealed by the bolt heads. Also, make sure you have the right
bolts. A bolt that's too long can bottom out against the torque converter
before the flywheel is completely tight. Also the correct bolts have little
"ridges" around the head to help them lock into
  place.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Bad news came tonight...

2002-12-17 Thread Don

  If
you're interested in educating yourself on small-blocks (i assume you're
talking about a small-block!) get a copy of David Vizard's "How to Rebuild
Your Small Block Chevy."  Most bookstores will carry it in the automotive
section.  Put it in the bathroom and read it twice.  There will be a
  quiz next Monday.
  I agree. There's
also one called "How to Hot Rod a Small Block". There are several books on the
  market that explain the basics.
Seriously, if you want to know what makes the thing tick, it's a good
read.  Our engines are not swiss watches -- you CAN understand it
  all.
  Again, I agree.
The old chevy engines just aren't that complicated. They're really quite
simple. The electronics/ignition & carburation or injection can get a
little complicated but the basic engine is all very simple. Have you ever seen
one of those plastic models of the "Visible V8 Engine"?
  That's basically a
small block chevy. Buy one (about $30), put it together & you've basically
  built a minature small block.
Also, one last thing to consider on your knocking noise -- the timing
chain.  I've had a loose timing chain, twice, rapping against the block
and timing cover that sounded an awful lot like a rod knock.  Diagnosing
with a stethoscope could be useful in this situation.
  Someone else sent
a whole list of things that can cause a knock so I won't go there. A rod knock
will usually get worse just off of idle during acceleration &
deceleration. A main bearing usually is worse at a fast idle. Over time
any bearing will continue to get worse until it goes out
  completely.
  An easy way to
check if it's a bearing is to pull one plug wire off at a time while the
engine is running. "Usually" a rod or main will stop knocking when the bad
cylinder is removed because it's no longer pressuring the
  piston.

If
you're interested in educating yourself on small-blocks (i assume you're talking
about a small-block!) get a copy of David Vizard's "How to Rebuild Your Small
Block Chevy."  Most bookstores will carry it in the automotive
section.  Put it in the bathroom and read it twice.  There will be a
quiz next Monday.

Seriously, if you want to know what makes the thing tick, it's a good
read.  Our engines are not swiss watches -- you CAN understand it
all.

Also,
one last thing to consider on your knocking noise -- the timing chain.
I've had a loose timing chain, twice, rapping against the block and timing cover
that sounded an awful lot like a rod knock.  Diagnosing with a stethoscope
could be useful in this situation.

  tonight...
  All,

I found out some bad new about Lucy tonight.. Now
before everyone gets worried Lucy is my 65 Chevelle Wagon.. Now on with the
story. I have had some knocking in my engine at idle for a while. At  a
friend's suggestion I remove the mechanical fuel pump and replaced it with a
electric one.. Waaa;aaa the noise seemed to go away for a while.. Lately I
have heard the knocking sound again. so I took it to a local guy http://www.kennyeakles.com/ (not
an advertisement just wanted to put his opionion in purspective) .. and he
says that I have a rod knocking and most likely will need  a shortblock
or maybe I can get this one bored over Also to start looking at kits to
rebuild the engine... So here is where my questions starts... I only have
about 5 months of messing with older cars and definately don't have the
expertise to fix it myself, YET!!... Any ideas on good books, kits< crate
  engines??

Hi Jerry,

Your 4-speed takes exactly 2.5 pints of SAE 80.
