Thanks Bob, for the advice and encouraging words.  So the retaining ring is all that’s holding it in there huh?

What about the spring setup on your ‘65?   Are they different sizes or identical?

In the meantime, I’m soaking the inside of the stud with PB Blaster and will give it a series of good, steady pulls.
I’m planning on getting a rebuild kit (they even come with a zerk fitting to grease the bar).  How much grease did you fill the zbar with?

The corvairs were definitely innovations for their time.

They were fun & very different than other cars on the
road at the time. Even with all of their problems, they were good cars in my
opinion, especially compared to some of the junk that Detroit has produced since
then.

I understand where you're coming from Dave. Ohio
winter's suck! It's hard not to envy those that live in Ca. or Fl. when
you're shivering in your boots while you stand in snow & gaze at your
beloved Chevelle under the car cover.

Yeah, I guess you make a good point about all the stuff that is in
Ohio.  I do happen to enjoy driving to Summit (45 mins) when I'm buying
new parts.  Carlisle is an annual tradition for a group of us.  I
think Chevellabration would be an 8 hour drive for me.
Steve made some great points too. Aside from the weather, Ohio is
really pretty "car friendly". There are lots of car related things to do
& organizations around here. We're also pretty centrally located for a
lot of car stuff going on in the Eastern or Midwestern part of the
country.
It's just too cold!  Br... My thermometer at 6:30pm reads 10
degrees.  My garage is both un-insulated and un-heated.  Actually,
last night it was so cold that my fluorescent lights wouldn't turn on out
there.
I
agree!  Cold Sucks! I have to work out in it all night! Try
standing in the middle of the highway trying to clear up an auto accident
when it's 10 degrees with a howling wind & blinding snow & every
other driver is irrate & wants to run you over!
As
for the cops, there's good ones to be found everywhere -- except in my
rearview.
HaHa! I understand. Yeah, there are good cops & bad cops just
like there are good & bad mechanics, plumbers, etc. But really, what we
usually get upset about is when they "catch us" when we're doing something
we know we really shouldn't be doing. It is natural to bad mouth the cop
because he wrote us a ticket "just because we laid rubber for 100
feet...sideways" He was just doing his job. We all know it, we just
don't want to admit it.  Human nature.

careful out there,

where are you at in Ohio?

While I agree with you that some of the boys in
blue in some places, mostly hiway guys and some little town guys, can be
a little "tight", I know one great city cop that talks common sense.
He's a great member of our Tri-State Chevelle club. In fact we made him
our Sgt-At-Arms :) He's on this list so be expecting some
comments.

As for the winter and cold ok ...have to
agree a bit there. Pretty hard to do much including work on cars. While
my garage is heated, when you do something where you need to get rid of
fumes letting a 10 degree wind come through kinda shivers your
wrenches.

But the one thing I will have to disagree with
you on is the general statement that Ohio is not the car friendliest
place in the world. Ok ..well maybe not THE friendliest ...at least in
the sense that you refer to, but with Jegs, Summit, Flaming River, and a
whole bunch of other car related businesses I can't even think of being
located here, and the great shows in Columbus such as Good Guys, big
events at the raceways, being centrally located so we can go to
Chevellabration in a few hours, Muscle car nationals in even less, Indy
for a while host of car related events, and even Carlisle on the other
side. did I mention Michigan above us?

Well I think you get the point
:)   Hang on man ...spring will be here in a matter of
days!  January is almost over!

They
are rear-engine cars and basically hollow in the front. AFAIK Nader's
contention was that they were not safe in an accident for this reason. On
top of that, the rear engine made them fishtail more easily on turns on
rainy days, etc, and people who were not used to handling a rear-engine car
sometimes wiped out or even spun out in them. Finally, they are air-cooled,
which makes them bad for commuter traffic. That's all I can remember
OTTOMH.

On a
positive note, they have 4-wheel independent suspension like the Corvette
and transaxles like modern front wheel drive cars. it was pretty innovative
for it's time. I also think they are pretty cool, but I guess they are
basically "girl cars" to some people.

really shouldn't be doing. It is natural to bad mouth the cop because he wrote

Dwight,

Anybody have any experience with these bushings?  Are graphite

Hate to spend 300.00 or more on the suspension bushings that will drive

Sorry guys. Been in the mid-70's all January here in the metro Phoenix
area. (That's almost 10 degrees warmer than usual - even for here).110
in July and August is no different than 10 in January and February. I lived
in Massachusetts once.

But it's our show and cruise season.

Once again, I feel compelled to plug the greatest car spectacle I've ever
attended - Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale. I was there last Saturday and
I've got to say that it just keeps getting better every year. Everything
from Dusenbergs to Ferraris. But, muscle cars dominated the procedings and
have taken the world's fancy by a storm. Where once the European exotics
generated the most interest, things are shifting to classic Detroit muscle
now. Chevelles were extremely well represented this year. Check out the
following link and you'll see what I mean. Search on Chevelle:

 http://barrettjackson.com/auctionresults/default.asp

A lot of the reason for the high prices is that deep-pocketed baby boomers
from all over the world come to Scottsdale in January. Barrett-Jackson is
the premier event and has spawned several others here, too. At
Barrett-Jackson, 8000 registered bidders vie for around 800 cars - hence the
higher prices.

The auction is only part of the spectacle. Hundreds of vendors. Absolutely
a must see if you're ever in the neighborhood in January. Come to think of
it, it's a good reason to come in January. That and the 75 degree sunny
weather. Hell, I got a little sunburn Saturday!

Your

Polyurethane or Polygraphite?  Funny, checking a dictionary
and "polygraphite" doesn't even appear.  Doing a Google search for
'polygraphite' brings a lot of references and most with uppercase spelling and
is a registered trade mark of P-S-T.  I wonder if they're essentially the
same thing but one is a trade mark?  Kinda like photocopy machines and
  'Xerox' maybe?

I
think what he is saying is that if you could sell every part off of every
car, that would be the total value. Cars are never worth more than the sum
of their parts, especially junk cars. Unfortunately, I loaned my last 2.5
million to a friend just the other day.

Polyurethane or Polygraphite?  Funny, checking a dictionary
and "polygraphite" doesn't even appear.  Doing a Google search for
'polygraphite' brings a lot of references and most with uppercase spelling and
is a registered trade mark of P-S-T.  I wonder if they're essentially the
same thing but one is a trade mark?  Kinda like photocopy machines and
'Xerox' maybe?

I'm in
the Cleveland area.  I guess I just have SoCal envy.. :-) (or
any other part of the country where you can drive classics all year
round).

Yeah,
I guess you make a good point about all the stuff that is in Ohio.  I do
happen to enjoy driving to Summit (45 mins) when I'm buying new parts.
Carlisle is an annual tradition for a group of us.  I think Chevellabration
would be an 8 hour drive for me.

It's
just too cold!  Br... My thermometer at 6:30pm reads 10 degrees.
My garage is both un-insulated and un-heated.  Actually, last night it was
so cold that my flourescent lights wouldnt turn on out
there.

As for
the cops, there's good ones to be found everywhere -- except in my
rearview.

Dave,

where are you at in Ohio?

While I agree with you that some of the boys in
blue in some places, mostly hiway guys and some little town guys, can be a
little "tight", I know one great city cop that talks common sense. He's a
great member of our Tri-State Chevelle club. In fact we made him our
Sgt-At-Arms :) He's on this list so be expecting some
comments.

As
for the winter and cold ok ...have to agree a bit there. Pretty hard to
do much including work on cars. While my garage is heated, when you do
something where you need to get rid of fumes letting a 10 degree wind
come through kinda shivers your wrenches.

But the one thing I will have to disagree with you
on is the general statement that Ohio is not the car friendliest place in
the world. Ok ..well maybe not THE friendliest ...at least in the sense that
you refer to, but with Jegs, Summit, Flaming River, and a whole bunch of
other car related businesses I can't even think of being located here, and
the great shows in Columbus such as Good Guys, big events at the raceways,
being centrally located so we can go to Chevellabration in a few hours,
Muscle car nationals in even less, Indy for a while host of car related
events, and even Carlisle on the other side. did I mention Michigan
above us?

Well I think you get the point :)
Hang on man ...spring will be here in a matter of days!  January is
almost over!

I
can only guess but I'd say the ball stud is stuck in the seat that's inside the
z-bar.  Never pulled one apart myself but I would guess a good yank would
do it but you might ask for more experienced advice.

My
GM parts catalog shows the lower spring (z-bar to frame) is the same for 64-67
(group 0.844, # 9776993) - see http://www.team67.com/groups/group.000/clutch_pedal_linkage.jpg for
an exploded view.  The diagram doesn't show a second spring but the parts
listing shows:

0.844 SPRING, Clutch Pedal Pull Back
64-67 Chevelle (283/327) 9776993  1  push
rod
64-67 Chevelle
(283/327) 1
push rod return.

Leads me to believe that both springs are the
same.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Suspension bushings

2003-01-22 Thread Herbert Lumpp

Dwight,

I have the PST Polygraphite bushings at each pivot point on my 76
Vette.  It handles nice, doesn't ride harsh (in my opinion), but it does
squeak, which makes it sound like an old car that needs some work.

My Elky on the other hand, has Global West Del-a-lum bushings at each pivot
point.  It rides about the same as the Vette, but doesn't make any noise
(except for the exhaust).  In fact, I think if I had 15" wheels and tires
instead of the 17", the ride would feel much softer than the Vette.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is I'm sold on the Del-a-lum bushings
and highly recommend them.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Can I use this Camaro rear?

2003-01-22 Thread MICRLASER
It will not fit as Camaros are F bodies and use leaf spring suspension.  Our Chevelles are a 4 link coil sprung setup.
posi differentials either have a little "S" clip in the einter or a spring loaded assembly.  The GM units have the S clip while aftermarket ones have the spring load setup.  If  they are both 8.2" rears, the gears and carrier will bolt right into you existing housing.

Camaro is a leaf spring car. Your car has coil springs. So whole rear
exchange is out. If they are both 8.2" ten bolts you may be able to swap
carriers and make yours a posi.

[Chevelle-List] Can I use this Camaro rear?

2003-01-22 Thread Bill Bruyn

I'm toying with the
idea of a gear swap on my '67.  I'm still in 'planning mode', and someone
pointed out to me yesterday that maybe I should install a limited slip
differential while I'm at it.

Interestingly
enough, I found out this morning that a friend of mine has a complete 10-bolt
sitting in his back yard.  He doesn't know much about it, except that it's
supposed to be a Positraction unit that came out of a Camaro (year
unknown).I can probably take it home for a song, so I think I'll go have
a look next week.  Experiences with this?  Do I just measure end to
end to find out whether or not it'll fit?  What else should I be looking
for?  I wouldn't know what a limited slip differential looked like if it
bit me in the a**, much less who built it (e.g., Eaton, Auburn, Dana,
etc.).  All I can think to look for is:- Casting numbers (he didn't
see any, so...)- Determine gear ratio (be nice if they were 3.73s :o])-
Check that the gears look 'okay' (no rust, scoring, etc.)- Verify
Positraction by checking that both ends spin the same
direction

Thanks, as
always.

I suppose you
could go with poly sway bar bushings for stiffer handling and rubber body
mounts so that the ride itself is not so stiff. Might be a good combo for a

I used PST's Super kit w/polygraphite bushings in
the front of my 68 El Camino. In five years,I never heard a squeak and they
really took the slop out of the front end. Don't use them in the rear as they
tend to bind things up on a street car.
My 69 El Camino will have Del a Lum bushings in
it,though. Expensive but better.

Title: Rebuilding a z-bar

Anyone ever rebuilt a z-bar (bellcrank) for a ‘64?  How does the ball-stud at the end come out?  I’ve removed the retaining ring but the ball stays put.  Am I just not yanking hard enough (all right, all right, stop chuckling...no jokes please, just advice).

Noticed also that I need two springs (clutch linkage return springs) to install the z-bar in place, however all the catalogs I have only show spring sets for 66-67 (two different sizes) and 68-72 (both identical sizes).  I’m assuming the springs for 66-67 will work for me as well...correct?

Personally
I don’t recommend polyurethane bushings unless you are racing or doing some
other hard driving that warrants them. Not only can they squeak, they also make
the ride very stiff. If you are just driving the car on the street normally, I personally
think you would be better off with rubber bushings.

RE: [Chevelle-List] winter show season

2003-01-22 Thread Richard M. Pruett
Darrell,

I caught a little of the show and wish I had seen it all. Tuned in during
the auction of the 427 side oiler Cobra clone. If memory serves, it went for
$225,000-$230,000! A little out of my price range. If you know of a re-run,
would you let us know?

Thanx

Rich

Cheers!

I feel real sorry for you warm weather folks out there...we had a high
of 10* again today, and it's supposed to continue like this all week. I
heard a chill factor (wind compounding the cold temps, for you from the
tropics...) of -18* yesterday. But we still don't have hardly any snow -
I haven't had the tractor running since I took the mower deck off and
mounted the blower.

I wonder if the 396 would even fire up? It doesn't start real easy in
the summer!

Dave,
where are you at in Ohio?

While I agree with you that some of the boys in blue in some places,
mostly hiway guys and some little town guys, can be a little "tight", I
know one great city cop that talks common sense. He's a great member of
our Tri-State Chevelle club. In fact we made him our Sgt-At-Arms :) He's
on this list so be expecting some comments.

As for the winter and cold ok ...have to agree a bit there. Pretty
hard to do much including work on cars. While my garage is heated, when
you do something where you need to get rid of fumes letting a 10
degree wind come through kinda shivers your wrenches.

But the one thing I will have to disagree with you on is the general
statement that Ohio is not the car friendliest place in the world. Ok
..well maybe not THE friendliest ...at least in the sense that you refer
to, but with Jegs, Summit, Flaming River, and a whole bunch of other car
related businesses I can't even think of being located here, and the
great shows in Columbus such as Good Guys, big events at the raceways,
being centrally located so we can go to Chevellabration in a few hours,
Muscle car nationals in even less, Indy for a while host of car related
events, and even Carlisle on the other side. did I mention Michigan
above us?

Well I think you get the point :) Hang on man ...spring will be here
in a matter of days! January is almost over!

Steve

It's been so cold here and since I store my cars off my property, I'd
almost forgotten about them. We're in our 2nd or 3rd straight week with
temperatures below freezing, and it's not letting up for at least
another week. Cops in the summer, salt in the winter-- Ohio is not the
car-friendliest place in the world. *sigh*
