Doesn't bother me in particular, but a lot of people are still on modems

on emailing pictures to the entire List.  Might be better to post the

eh?  I'll post 'em on my site if Herb can't find a

I
have mine coming out behind the rear wheels, like Brad's, but angled
down more.  Stirs up a little dust at times in a dirt show field, but it
keeps the exhaust off the bumper for sure and ver little gets on the

[Chevelle-List] Quadrajet Revisited

2003-02-03 Thread Tom Tomlinson

This
goes back to a carburetor discussion about 3 weeks ago.

I've
been considering rebuilding my 4160 Holley (600 cfm), going to an Edelbrock
performer 600 cfm, or a Quadrajet for my '71 350 Malibu. In the Edelbrock
selection guide, it suggests a 600 cfm performer or a 750 cfm Quadrajet for
their performer intake manifold. I couldn't figure out why the large difference
in cfm between the performer and the Quadrajet; 600 cfm is about right for my
engine (and the manifold), and when I posted the question to the list, no one
responded.

The
answer is on this web site:

http://www.goattraks.com/tech/q-jet/q-jet-5.htm

Apparently, the Quadrajet comes in two versions, a 750
cfm and an 800 cfm. The air valves on the secondaries of the 750 were designed
with stops to limit air flow according to the cfm required for the engine. So
the original Quadrajet on my car had secondaries that were limited to a 70
degree opening (90 degrees being full open) to create the proper cfm rating for
the 350 small block.

Didn't
know if this was common knowledge, but I thought it was
interesting.

[Chevelle-List] Update on my 69

2003-02-03 Thread MICRLASER
Well it has been sometime since I have done anything to my project 69 Mallibu.  Mainly because it has been way to cold out and I had to get the 70 ready for World of Wheels.  Now I can finally get the 69 done.  I found the last part I need to complete it, the vinyl top moldings.  True Connections out in California had a set so I bought them up.  Now I can make an appointment to get the top and headliner done.  However, it will need to go back to the body shop to have some minor things fixed.  I also may have to tear the front end apart to repaint the firewall, heater box, and a few other things.  The voltage regulator needs to be replaced.  I drove it to work and on the way home I noticed the lights were unusually bright.  It appears that it had been pumping out way too many volts causing the battery to overcharger and boi!
l over.  Acid got all over the firewall, heater box, and exhaust manifold and made the paint flake right off to the touch (I knew that was going to happen).  Hopefully it will be ready to rock 'n roll for the upcoming season.  It WILL be at the MCC show last year.  I had planned to unveil it there last year, but you know how things happen and whatnot.  I'll update again once I am near completion.

I would have them dump down past the tires.  The exhaust on my 70 dumps out under the bumper.  It looks factory, but it will give what I call "Blue Bumper Syndrome".  The exhaust fumes turn the bumper a bluish color.  It wipes off with some detailer or wax, but can be a real pain b/c it happens everytime I drive it.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Rear Control Arm Bushings Question

When I did my 70 I took a chisel and gave a few good whacks in the middle
which colapses the bushing and you can then pry it out. But I did have
everything out and on the bench. If you jack up your rear end and support it,
you can remove the lowers and sandblast and paint them up if you have a
little time on your hands.

But WATCH OUT !!! I suddenly decided everything needs painting cause
...while I'm there I might as well.next thing you know the rear is all
out. I have a bad habbit of going nuts and I loose lots of driving time.

If you think its a 2 hour job, I multiply by 4 and thats on a good day.

Just thinking out loud.your experience may be different..depends on
how nuts you are on cleaning and making it look good!

It sounds like the throttle control rod bushings your friend needs. NPD has them. And probably the rest of the after market places carry them as well.

A friend of mine owns a '67 SS & says he has a sticking throttle pedal, I am unable to check out the problem since he lives a distance away. He says that the linkage behind the pedal has some sort of plastic or poly boshing & is worn, causing it to stick? He says he cannot find any sources for replacement. I told him I would ck  with you guys on the the list. Does anyone out there know of what I'm describing & know of where to purchase the linkage or bushings?

Disassemble a hacksaw and reassemble it with the blade passing through the
empty bushing sleeve. Saw through the sleeve all along its length (it's
okay if you cut into the axle housing a little). Saturate the outside of
the sleeve with penetrating oil and then go have a sandwich. After your
sandwich, peel the cut sleeve out of the housing with pliers or Vise Grips.
My experience is this will not work unless you use penetrating oil.

RE: [Chevelle-List] GM Strike

2003-02-03 Thread McLerran, Larry W.

That
is correct, my 70 El Camino has a block, casting date Oct. 8, 1969, 396/402,
heads (390) casting dates Jan. 16, 21, 1970, intake manifold cast date
of Sept. 7, 1979 and a block build date of Jan. 23, 1970 @ Tonawanda. The
early cast date and late head date could also be caused by the rush to build
454's which also used the (390) head on the LS5. The changeover for
the 69/70 model year is FULL of these ABNORMALTIES, due to the strike and
LONG 69 model run. Transmissions dates by MUNCIE for the 70 model year should
all be 661 case's and this is not true around Dec., Jan. of 1970, many 660 cases
were still used due to the slowdown of production on vehicles!! Guess you better
have a POP and believe what it says!!

RE: [Chevelle-List] Alt # confirmation

2003-02-03 Thread McLerran, Larry W.
That alternator is out of a Full Size Passenger, Biscayne, BelAir, or,
Caprice, with A/C, H/D ouput, K-85 option, or?? Chevelle, Monte Carlo,
W/HD Cooling, K85 option. No other vehicles are listed as having that
Alt. for the 72 model year. It is a 63 AMP, Good Luck, and is not
correct for your car!!

[Chevelle-List] Rear Control Arm Bushings Question

2003-02-03 Thread Craig & Cerena Robertson

I'm in the process of replacing the Rear
Control Arm Bushings on my 69.  I just drill out the old rubber bushings
and all that remains of the old ones are the metal housings.  Can someone
give me any ideas on how to crush and remove them without damaging the
arms?  Thanks.  I'm also thinking of boxing the Lower control
arms.  I do not have a rear sway bar but would like to have it ready to
install one later.  Can anyone give me measurements on the locations of the
holes.  Thanks for any help.

Another possibility is to buy a trailer (as suggested) but sell it when you
are done...maybe you only loose a few hundred dollarsbetter that several
hundred to a tow company.although I bet if you do buy a trailer, you will
probably NOT want to sell it. ( I know I would drag my feet not to ! )

Just another option.
