I think the five speed is a simpler swap, and cheaper as well. Check out Keisler (http://www.keislerauto.com/gm/chevelle.html) for a great solution that has all the parts and makes sure everything will work and fit. Without looking at Specs, the five speed is (I think) lighter and smaller as well.

last CA code was 1969 3.08 10-bolt (and used from 65 to 69).  I do show a
CF for 72 as a 3.31 posi and a CH as a 2.73 posi.  In 71 and 72 the date
code was changed to a julian date format (i.e., 281 for 281 days from Jan 1) as
opposed to earlier MMDD format like your 0902 (Sept. 2).  "W" is for Warren

1. Scour the salvage yards for
a 69-72 A-body car (Chevelle, Lemans, Skylark, Olds) with disc brakes and
get everything from the master cylinder to spindles.  Use what you
can and get new or rebuilt what you can't use (calipers, pads, hoses,
M/C, etc).
Advantages: Generally less
expensive and most replacement parts are available over the
counter.
Disadvanges: You have to hunt
the initial parts, clean and inspect what you have, and convince the
parts counter guy that you know what you're doing when ordering disc
parts for a 70 when you really have a 67.

2. Any number of folks now
make disc brake conversions for our Chevelles.  Such as ABS Power
Brake, Classic Performance, Master Power Brakes, etc.
Advantages: Everything is
fresh and new and will probably fit together without much
hassle.
Disadvantages: Most supply new
disc brake spindles so those have to be changed as well.  Cost will
be a bit higher that option #1.

3. Baer makes disc kits for
everything from 11" to 13" front brakes that do not require a
disc brake spindle
Advantages: You can use your
current spindles and everything is new as option #2.
Disadvantages. Cost is on the
upper end of option #2 depending on how fancy you want to
get.

Might note that most 11"
disc kits require the use of 15" wheels with a proper offset and not
all 15's will work with the smaller kits.  Larger kits like the
12" and 13" will REQUIRE at least a 16" and sometimes a
17" wheel.  If you go with one or two, check with the mfg to
see what wheel size is required.

Any number of folks now make disc brake conversions for our Chevelles.
Such as ABS Power Brake, Classic Performance, Master Power
Brakes, etc.
Advantages: Everything is fresh and new and
will probably fit together without much hassle.
Disadvantages: Most supply new disc brake spindles so those have
to be changed as well.  Cost will be a bit higher that option
#1.

3.
Baer makes disc kits for everything from 11" to 13" front brakes that do not
require a disc brake spindle
Advantages: You can use your current spindles and everything
is new as option #2.
Disadvantages. Cost is on the upper end of option #2 depending on
how fancy you want to get.

Might note that most 11" disc kits require the use of 15" wheels
with a proper offset and not all 15's will work with the smaller kits.
Larger kits like the 12" and 13" will REQUIRE at least a 16" and sometimes a 17"
wheel.  If you go with one or two, check with the mfg to see what wheel
size is required.

[Chevelle-list] FS: chevelle rear bumper

2003-08-15 Thread chris smetana
I have a chevelle rear bumper, not an SS version. It
is a solid core, could be used as is for a driver. Or
rechrome it for your show core. Asking $30 plus
shipping. Located in the southwest suburbs of
Chicago. Email with any question. Unfortunately I
don't think I have any pictures at this time.
Thanks,
Chris

I have a new dash bezel for my 65 Chevelle ragtop and
am wondering if the glove box trim is supposed to be the same"chrome"
appearance as the dash bezel.  My old bezel had been painted by previous
owner and I suspect he did the same to the g.b. trim.
  Thanks...

Re: [Chevelle-list] plastic media blasting

2003-08-15 Thread Matthew Post
Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like $2500 is way too much to pay for
stripping the car. I should look for another shop that can do it or look
into all the good ideas from everyone. Soda blasting sounds
interesting. I'll have to find out if someone does that in So Cal.

I really need to decide how to proceed with the car at this point. Whether
to totally strip the car down and take it off the frame or not. If I take
it off the frame, then dipping the body sounds like a good option. I want
to replace the body mounts and fully restore the chassis, but I was going
to try to do it without lifting the body totally off. What has everyone
else out there done?

Thank everyone,
Matt

Diane, Treat the surface rust with ospho and then sand back to bare metal.
Be sure to use etching primer on the bare metal to prevent new rust. It only
takes a dusting of etching primer, not a solid coat.
