Re: [Chevelle-list] Trans opinion needed

2003-10-02 Thread Michael Pell
That's the T-5 5sp. If you have a mild sbc, and will not bang on it, the
transmission will probably last just fine for you (assuming it's not already
hurt).
The T-5s are only rated for 6cyl applications now, and GM didn't put them behind
350s, only the 305 (read as 'weak').

If you're going to have anything other than a very mild 350 or less, or you want
to bang on it some, then I'd recommend you find a stronger transmission now
rather than later.

good luck,

Re: [Chevelle-list] race track events

2003-10-02 Thread WCross9844
Ah, the joy of speed at a race track...what more could you ask for. That
reminds me of a track event I was part of 20 years ago. The local Corvette
club I belonged to was advertizing for an upcomming show. We were able to talk
the local race track into letting us do some pace laps just before the big race.
The track even let us park inside the gate in a roped off area right behind
the start/finish line.

We were to do 5 laps at a slow pace. But they didn't place a pacecar out
there with us. So here we go all 25 of us in a double row. Lap 1 was at about 20
mph..by lap three we were really moving. By lap 4 I knew what diving into
the corner meant. As we dove into turn 1 I glanced down at my speedo and saw
about 90 mph. Then the track threw the yellow lights on and made us stop. One
of the other guys said he hit 120 on straight. Needless to say we all had big
grins on our faces all nite !!!

The following weekend we went to a second racetrack, but they had heard what
we did and they were VERY stern with us about speed. They had a pacecar and
every track car and tow truck was on the track to keep us in line. We never got
over 20 mph. :( Damn, no fun

The need for speed continues

Clint,

If you happen to go by there today/tonight, go ahead and I'll get 'em
from you at Goodguys. I would like to take a look at the pan to see
just where it was screwed up and the dipstick tube may still come in
handy for someone. The Hurst Line Lock I can always sell on eBay since
I probably won't be using it with the 700R4 and it works great.

I'll check mail tonight. Looks like I'm taking the Elky down as I still

I've built my cars to handle since before the term was coined. One of
the first things I did was convert my Chevelle over to disks with the
tall spindles, but that was before GW and Hotchkiss came up with their
lengthened A Arms and HO was the only one doing this. After tearing
through one site of tires due to alignment limits, I got the Global West
setup and have never looked back.

I've even had the Chevelle at the track twice. Had lots of fun and even
impressed quite a few people at Willow Springs. I timed myself with my
watch and came up with a lap time of 1:48 (83 MPH average), and
calculated that I was pulling just a tad over 1 G based on Turn 2 (470
foot radius, 90 mph).

Hey Brad, I'm right there with you. Starting with my second car, a '78 Z28,
I quickly found out how much fun it is to go around corners. Every car I've
had since then ('85) has been set up with corners in mind - shocks, springs,
anti-roll bars, lowered, wide low profile tires. I'm sure there were a lot
of people like us so a name for that type of car had to be created sooner or
later.

I think they just wanted to play cute with a catchy name: pro-street, now pro-touring.
And don't forget "g" machine or canyon carver!
I bought my first Chevelle in 77.
Early on I realized the 64 needed help in corners.
The Addco rear sway bar was on my car for over twenty years when I sold it.
Got by for years with just sway bars, good tires and shocks; and don't underestimate a rebuilt front end either.
The T/A steering box came way too late; would have done that long before if I'd realized how much it helped and how easy it was. (assuming you have the right pitman arm laying around - 64 Chevelles have 4 possible pitman arms!)
My next effort will be with the tall spindles using the Global West kit.
I'm still pondering their no rear sway bar approach though.

Pete,
I have pretty much the
full GW setup. Tall spindles and their A arm in the front with extra stiff
springs. The rear has their tubular lower control arm and 35 year old
upper arm and bushings, and springs, with no rear bar. I have Koni
adjustable shocks (if you want adjustable, it is worth it to pay for externally
adjustable shocks - I have never removed mine to reset them for street!) all
around. Combine that with 255/50/16 tires and it does pretty well.

When I bought the wheels, they were from athen
newCorvette (actually the Guldstrand GS80) and 16" wheels were pretty
good. Today, I would quickly use a 17" with 275 tires for even more rubber
on the road.
I am very happy with
the brakes and handling as is.

I'd
like a "list" opinion on this Elcamino I found locally. It seems like a good
deal, but I'm not sure if I'm bitting off more than I can
chew.

It's a
'66 that has been torn down for restoration, but the guy has health problems and
is moving down south.

Frame
has been stripped and painted from a previous restoration; no rot
anywhere.
Floors
have no rust, bed is perfect, firewall is stripped and ready for paint, hood and
doors have been stripped and primed. Has new
weatherstripping.
Left
quarter panel is rusted, but he has a replacement steel panel to weld in. Inner
fender is fine.
All
chrome and emblems intact and in excellent shape.
All
interior parts are new or restored.
Has
original 3.42 posi 10 bolt and stainless dual exhaust (custom) with
flowmasters.

Now
for the bad.
Engine
is gone, transmission is gone (originally a 4 speed on floor), and front fenders
and liners are gone. He started parting out the car since no one could buy the
whole thing. Also needs a windshield.

Basically it's extemely clean car, almost ready for
body paint (except the left quarter), with all the parts to reassemble either
restored or new, except the engine, trans, shifter, and front fenders. Most of
the hard clean-up work has been done.

He's
asking $2100 for everything, and has a fresh-built 355 CI engine to go with it
for another $1200.

Assuming I have the time/money to make it whole, does
this sound like a good deal? Are there any specific things to look for on a 66
elky that might be missing or hard to get?
