RE: [Chevelle-list] Malibu Carb question

2004-02-24 Thread John Nasta
What you are supposed to do is *be realistic* about what max RPM you will be
running at, and find the CFM that will get you 100% VE at that RPM. Using
the formula to find a carb that will get you 75% VE at your max RPM kind of
defeats the purpose of using the formula if you ask me.

Now, it's true that there are factors other than the carburetor that
contribute to whether or not you are getting 100% VE at max RPM, but that
doesn't mean you should choose a carburetor that will guarantee you not to
get better than 75%.

But...you're lucky to get 75%-80% VE on any given street engine. :*) A
normal street 283 isn't going to see the high side of 5500 and live very
long either, to be honest. So...in the real world

283 * 5500 / 3456 = 450. Multiply that times 75% and you get 338. Of
course, there are always exceptions and VE can vary - but not much. :*)

Maybe you should cut them up to get them off, if they are old crap?  Perhaps your new headers are a different shape and might slide in?  Just an idea.  Don't kill yourself trying to get aftermarket cheap crap headers off!

Tried removing the old filter and still no luck.  It appears that it may come out from the bottom the best.  The clutch linkage is the only thing I can see holding it back.  I am def. not a pro with anything to do with clutches so is there anything I should look out for taking the linkage apart.  You are right, I do NOT want to have to take the head off.  They are some kind of aftermarket cheap crap header, two of the four pipes were smashed about half closed so I have some Hooker's in the box waiting to go on it.

I have a 69 4spd big block and I am having a rough time getting the driver's side header off.  The passenger side came out from the bottom, but the driver's side hits the clutch, steering, etc. so, unbolted motor and moved steering column out of way and it still will not come out the top.  Any secrets I am missing?

RE: [Chevelle-list] Malibu Carb question

2004-02-24 Thread Dale McIntosh
A 283-2 isn't going to take much fuel to get it running. Probably the
smallest 4-bbl from Edelbrock would be their 500cfm unit (#1404). Another
choice would be a Holley 390cfm (#0-8007) for a small engine
(http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/FMS/FMSC/0-8007.html). An
Edelbrock Performer EPS (#2701) intake would make a good choice for a mild
283 (idle - 5500).

They just did a cam swap on a 66 small block on HPTV.
The only clearance problem was the rear of the bumper.  If you find that
the case, you can do what they did and jack the engine up a couple of inches or
drop the front bumper.  Try as you may, that cam just won't bend at that
last journal. :*)

Just a comment on the H-pipe vs. the X-pipe. My brother has a 2004 Z06 vette
and he had 3 dyno pulls done on it and then with out taking it off the rack,
they put an X-pipe on it and it and did 3 more pulls. It gained 8 hp and the
sound is totally different. Much deeper and more macho sounding than the
pinging popping sound that he had before. The factory H-pipe definitely
needs replaced on the Z06 in my opinion. And I couldn't tell you where he
bought the X-pipe but if some one wants to know I could ask him.

Remove distributor, intake, push rods, and lifters. Pull harmonic balancer,

that’s not too big a deal.  Anything else I should know that would
be a con to doing it in the car v. pulling the motor?  Your personal
experiences are appreciated!  Thanks.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Auto Obsession Used parts sale

2004-02-24 Thread Brad Waller
I don't need the doors, but I could use both driver and passenger side
windows mounted in their assemblies for a 1967 Chevelle Coupe. The
windows in my car come out of the "U" shaped channel, which is all that
holds them in. I was told I need the full assembly with the window, but
I don't care as long as the windows will crank up and down along with
the rest of the internals!

So, whatcha got?

[Chevelle-list] Malibu Carb question

2004-02-24 Thread John C. Butler
Does anyone know where I could find information on the carburetor size that
was on the 66 Malibu, 2 barrel, 283 motor. I need to replace mine and was
thinking about getting a edelbrock 4 barrel manifold and carb but not sure
of the cfm to get. Any hints or suggestion would be great.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Tire sizes

2004-02-24 Thread Brian Zack

I
have 235/75R15 on my ’70 and I have the front lowered about 1 ½” in
the front and I have the 15X8 chrome rally’s (but I don’t remember
the backspace offhand) and these tires are just too tall and turning into
driveways, I do have some tire rub on the fronts with the top of the inner
fender well at the top bolt/fenderwell. Occasionally, I will see a very slight
rub on the sidewall on the rears also. (but only occasionally). Also depending
on what gears you have, that tall of a tire might hurt you. Right now, I only
have 2.73’s and it kills my 60’ times. I do plan on going to around
26” – 26.5” tall tires when these wear out.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Tire
sizes

Hi everyone:  Most of us are
probably using 60 series and 70 series size tires.  The radial redlines I
want are made by Coker and come in the taller 75 series which also has less
tread width.  Does anyone know what the largest is that will fit a 65 in
front or will the taller tires give me clearance problems or what.  I'm
currently running 235/60/15's all around with no problems up front and a little
rub in the rear on good bumps with a later year 12 bolt.  I'll be getting
new wheels with 1/2 in more backspace from the standard 4in.  I've been
told that the 235/75/15 redlines may give me problems in front even though the
tread is over 1/2 in less.  I could probably be safe and go with 205's on
front and 225's on rear but I don't want to short my self.  the sales rep
thinks the 235's may be OK on the rear.  He says they're not supposed to
give technical advice.  I'm ready to spend a bunch of $$ and he's not
allowed to give advice!!  Any other place to get radial redlines??
All comments and advice will be greatly appreciated.  BTW the wheels I
like are the Weld Draglites.  I think they look good on a 65 and after 2
years of soul searching and dumping the rallyes, that's my decision.
Didn't have rallyes in 65 anyway.  Think out loud guys & girls and let
me know something.  I've been on this list for a while and I know the
answers are out there.   Thanks to all.

P.S. Prices go up 2/24 but are being held 1 more day  for me so I can
consult.  Thanks.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Body OFF

Here is what I did. I used 4x4's inside the frame
rails to support the body. Then I lowered the frame
(takes several Jacks to do this). Then with the frame
down, I used longer 4x4's and blocked the body on the
outsides of the frame and dragged the frame out from
under the car. viola!

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tire sizes

The 215 75 15 will fit just fine on the front, it's the same height as a 225
70 15 The 235 75 15 will fit fine on the rear, but may be a little too tall
for you liking. Personally if I had to go with a 75 series, I would go 215 75
15 all the way around. You don't really have much to work with in a 75 series
tire without getting into height clearance issues when going to larger section
widths. Hope this helps, good luck

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tire sizes

2004-02-24 Thread PLGChevelle65
Tom: Do you mean 215/75/15 all around. These radial redlnes only come in the 75
series. Any experience re the 235/75/15 on a newer wide 12 bolt. I'm trying to keep
some meat on the back. Maybe this is why you don't see more of these Coker tires
around. This 75 series is kinda awkward to work with. What are your thoughts on
205's or 215's on the front and 225 or 235 on the rear. The heights run from 205-27
inches to 235-29 inches so it will probably give alittle lowered front look depending
on the sizes. These are very different from your 60 & 70 series heights. Also what's
your opinion of wheel sizes. 7" front and 8" rear or 7's all around. I really
appreciate your comments & hope I'm not troubling you. I'm not getting any other
replies. The sales rep said go to a tire dealer and try sizes on etc. Well my car is
sleeping for the winter and I wanted to be ready for spring. I didn't think I was
trailblazing here and that this info would be as common as some of the mechanical
stuff on the list but apparently it's not. All you comments will be well received and
very much appreciated. Thanks again.
