If he's got NOS, good luck. I don't think Haegerty will touch him. They
also require a closed, locked garage. Don't know about the others.

Rusty,

With the Summit kit I bought, there was a jumper strap
that went from the battery cable post on the GM solenoid to the "S" (innermost)
post on the GM solenoid.   A single battery cable runs from the "B"
post on the Ford-type solenoid to the center battery post on the GM
solenoid.  If you check the diagrams at http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/ford_solenoid.htm ,
it'll become more apparent.  The diagram shows a 12-gauge jumper wire but
the Summit kit included a copper strap.

S and I’s mixed up on my remote starter solenoid.  Come someone
please take a pic in the link below and let me know what you think.  I am
just guessing on the end-location on the wires coming off those two
bolts.  I think I may have them reversed but I good of swore I hooked them
up the same way.

You never see the purple wire hook to anything else it looks
like it goes straight to the fuse block. The yellow wire seems to make stops at
the coil (positive term) and the windshield washer, I think.

I put in a new dash harness, engine harness, and front lamp
harness.  I get a fairly bright light when I test the connectivity between
the negative battery terminal and the battery cable (I have the negative cable
off and laying to the side).  Someone told me that if I get a light when
doing that, I have a short somewhere.  Does that sound right to you all?

Thanks a lot once again,

[Chevelle-list] Rear Air Bags and other options

2004-09-09 Thread Cecil Martin
I have a 69 Malibu. It was originally a 307 car, and had a 350 in it
when I got it. I put a 396 in it and a front tall spindle upgrade.

When I bought the car it had air shocks on it in the rear. I know from
experience the ride gets rough if you want the rear raised a bit.

I have heard a little about people putting moderately priced air bags
inside the rear coils, and then putting good quality shocks on.

I am in the middle of a "Frame - off" and the Chassis is almost done.
The rear shocks look tough to change with the body on in that the bolts
up top appear to be hard to reach.

I am just wondering if I should do some sort of suspension upgrade now,
or save my money for other things to get this thing on the road and wait
until later for upgrades.

What sort of rear suspension upgrades have you done that you like?

You need the wire to the "S" terminal to activate the solenoid and drive the gear into
the flywheel/flexplate and also close the circuit between battery and starter motor.
This Ford "solenoid" (it's not you know-just a big relay)seems like overkill.
I've used starter relays from 70's Chrysler products to bypass the suspicious wiring
in the harness and make sure the solenoid always kicked in when hot. These look much
like horn relays. Original wiring just has to activate relay which has a short path
using #10 wire to jumper from battery cable to "S" terminal. Functions like lower
drawing:
http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/ford_solenoid.htm
I think I like this better as heavy cable from battery to starter remains intact.

Right, only the SS got the black dash strip - it was
part of the SS option.  The Custom Elky (135xx/136xx) got the same interior
trim as the Malibu (wood grain dash strip and nicer seat coverings) and the
standard Elky (133xx/134xx) strip like the 300 Deluxe.  The base 300 had no

The gauge package (RPO U14) could be ordered on
any V8 sport coupe or convertible, so it wasn't a SS-only thing and
it's not clear if it was available on the Elky.  Chevelle options
brochure says V8 sport coupe/convertible only (meaning no L6 cars and no
wagons) and the Elky literature doesn't mention it.  Correct that
you could get any of the 396 engines and any trans in the Elky (TH400
with 396 only) and no SS Elky until 1968.  The trans option might
have changed after printing the options brochure however.  The
trim level on the Elky was still Malibu level in 67.  Lower belt
line trim, wood grain dash strip, NO SS hood even with the
396s, and even the Malibu script above the glove
compartment.

I don't think they came with the full guage package, the trim
, interior & convenience packages were all options.
Mostly tho you could get whatever you ordered & they
offered for that year. That is a beautiful car, it is funny seeing
it with a bench & column shifter.

The horn relay is readily available at any local
parts store. I just replaced the one in my 69 a few weeks ago. First see if you
have power at the horn contact at the wheel. Also try disconnecting the horn leads
from the relay and touching them directly to the positive battery terminal to
see if the horns work at all.

There are
2 horn relays listed for the 69 Chevelle / El Camino. The more expensive one is
listed as being for cars with anti-theft. Not sure how that works though. You
could always install a fuel or power cutoff switch.

The one thing I have learned is to actually ask the company...(not your
broker) what the REAL driving restrictions are...Most people like
Haggerty but when I specifically asked if I could drive my car 60 miles on
a Sunday afternoon to visit my Father the answer was NO it would be
classified as pleasure driving (like what the hell do they think I would be
driving the car for) ...

Needless to say I passed on insuring the cars with them... I now insure
with American Collectors
and they did allow the drive to visit my dad...BUT even they would NOT
insure the car While I was not driving it IF I parked the car on the
street..Damn glad Dad had a good sized driveway

[Chevelle-list] Hot Rod Insurance

2004-09-09 Thread Phil Adams

I was reading
someone's else's inquiry about Hot Rod Insurance and was wondering if there are
special insurance companies for collector cars / vintage cars & Rods? I just
purchased a BB 67 Chevelle Street Rod with NOS and was going to my regular
insurance company (Farmers) to get it insured. If there are specialty
companies, please name a couple.

The gauge package (RPO U14) could be ordered on any V8 sport coupe or convertible, so it wasn't a SS-only thing and it's not clear if it was available on the Elky.  Chevelle options brochure says V8 sport coupe/convertible only (meaning no L6 cars and no wagons) and the Elky literature doesn't mention it.  Correct that you could get any of the 396 engines and any trans in the Elky (TH400 with 396 only) and no SS Elky until 1968.  The trans option might have changed after printing the options brochure however.  The trim level on the Elky was still Malibu level in 67.  Lower belt line trim, wood grain dash strip, NO SS hood even with the 396s, and even the Malibu script above the glove compartment.

I don't think they came with the full guage package, the trim , interior & convenience packages were all options. Mostly tho you could get whatever you ordered & they offered for that year. That is a beautiful car, it is funny seeing it with a bench & column shifter.

All SS' were equipped with a 396 with 3 different hp versions, the turbo

  375hp engines tho.The SS' had a blacked out grille,rear cove panel,the

The blacked out instrument panel was only for the SS' along with all the
SS' badges.A vinyl bench seat was standard, the redline tires, dog dish caps
were also standard. You could get the disc brakes with ralley wheels&
redlines as an option, and you know about the tach &headrests. El

RE: [Chevelle-list] Coil Toil

2004-09-09 Thread Dale

I used a Ford solenoid on my 67 for years and got the *kit*
from Summit.  They supplied a copper strap to go between the posts but I
would guess a good 8 or 10 ga wire might suffice.  I never ran without that
jumper strap so I can't attest to the what problems there would be without
it.

I tapped into one of the wires from the wiper motor for my
electric choke.  I don't remember which it was but a test probe light will
show which is hot *only* when the ignition is on.

  Thanks for the info
Dale.  Sounds like I am missing that jump from the S post to the battery
cable post.  Would that stop the car from getting power?  (it sounds
like it would… so that could be my problem)

  You are correct; that
yellow wire is for the choke.  I was trying to think of where to put it
but wasn’t sure what to do with it, any
  recommendations?

  "S" goes to the
ignition switch, "I" goes to the coil positive side.  On the starter
solenoid, you should also have a jumper between the "S" (inside) post and the
battery cable post.  See http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/ford_solenoid.htm for
assistance.  The yellow wire you have going to the carb, is that for an
electric choke?  If so, it's hot all the time and that's not what you
want; you want a connection that's only hot when the engine is running and
dead when the engine (ignition) is off.

  The purple wire
goes from the "S" terminal to the fuse block, correct.  The
yellow wire doesn't go the the wiper motor, only the coil.  There
are yellow wires (and blue and black) on the wiper motor but they go to the
  bulkhead connector.  See http://www.chevellestuff.com/67stuff/67velle/wiring_diagrams.htm for
  67 wiring diagrams.

Another noob wiring
question…  I think I have my S and I’s mixed up on my remote starter
solenoid.  Come someone please take a pic in the link below and let me
know what you think.  I am just guessing on the end-location on the
wires coming off those two bolts.  I think I may have them reversed but
I good of swore I hooked them up the same way.

You never see the purple wire
hook to anything else it looks like it goes straight to the fuse block. The
yellow wire seems to make stops at the coil (positive term) and the
windshield washer, I think.

I put in a new dash harness,
engine harness, and front lamp harness.  I get a fairly bright light
when I test the connectivity between the negative battery terminal and the
battery cable (I have the negative cable off and laying to the side).
Someone told me that if I get a light when doing that, I have a short
somewhere.  Does that sound right to you
all?

Thanks a lot once
again,
JB
