RE: [Chevelle-list] Coil Toil
Rusty, With the Summit kit I bought, there was a jumper strap that went from the battery cable post on the GM solenoid to the "S" (innermost) post on the GM solenoid. A single battery cable runs from the "B" post on the Ford-type solenoid to the center battery post on the GM solenoid. If you check the diagrams at http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/ford_solenoid.htm , it'll become more apparent. The diagram shows a 12-gauge jumper wire but the Summit kit included a copper strap. [Chevelle-list] Rear Air Bags and other options
I have a 69 Malibu. It was originally a 307 car, and had a 350 in it when I got it. I put a 396 in it and a front tall spindle upgrade. When I bought the car it had air shocks on it in the rear. I know from experience the ride gets rough if you want the rear raised a bit. I have heard a little about people putting moderately priced air bags inside the rear coils, and then putting good quality shocks on. I am in the middle of a "Frame - off" and the Chassis is almost done. The rear shocks look tough to change with the body on in that the bolts up top appear to be hard to reach. I am just wondering if I should do some sort of suspension upgrade now, or save my money for other things to get this thing on the road and wait until later for upgrades. What sort of rear suspension upgrades have you done that you like? Steve

I never ran without that jumper strap so I can't attest to the >what problems there would be without it.< You need the wire to the "S" terminal to activate the solenoid and drive the gear into the flywheel/flexplate and also close the circuit between battery and starter motor. This Ford "solenoid" (it's not you know-just a big relay)seems like overkill. I've used starter relays from 70's Chrysler products to bypass the suspicious wiring in the harness and make sure the solenoid always kicked in when hot. These look much like horn relays. Original wiring just has to activate relay which has a short path using #10 wire to jumper from battery cable to "S" terminal. Functions like lower drawing: http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/ford_solenoid.htm I think I like this better as heavy cable from battery to starter remains intact. Right, only the SS got the black dash strip - it was part of the SS option. The Custom Elky (135xx/136xx) got the same interior trim as the Malibu (wood grain dash strip and nicer seat coverings) and the standard Elky (133xx/134xx) strip like the 300 Deluxe. RE: [Chevelle-list] Front Wiring Harness - 69 chevelle
The horn relay is readily available at any local parts store. I just replaced the one in my 69 a few weeks ago. First see if you have power at the horn contact at the wheel. Also try disconnecting the horn leads from the relay and touching them directly to the positive battery terminal to see if the horns work at all. There are 2 horn relays listed for the 69 Chevelle / El Camino. The more expensive one is listed as being for cars with anti-theft. Not sure how that works though. You could always install a fuel or power cutoff switch. You could get the disc brakes with ralley wheels& redlines as an option, and you know about the tach &headrests. El Camino SS' weren't built in '67 but you could get all the SS package without the emblems.I don't think they came with the full guage package, the trim , interior & convenience packages were all options. Mostly tho you could get whatever you ordered & they offered for that year. That is a beautiful car, it is funny seeing it with a bench & column shifter. Mikey ---Original Message--- From: The Chevelle Mailing List Date: 09/08/04 22:20:06 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-list] 67 options was just wondering, did all ss models come with the full gauge package ? seen a ss for sale on e-bay this car also had the shifter on the column, is it you get what you order or what. the seller claims its a number matching car, i just always thought when you ordered an ss all the goodies came with it, maybe my thinking was wrong after all. also, aside from the numbers i once read that one way to tell an ss is the strip by the ingition, a malibu is a wood grain an a ss is a wrinkled finish black any help thanks ronnie Do you Yahoo!?Shop for Back-to-School deals on Yahoo! RE: [Chevelle-list] Coil Toil
I used a Ford solenoid on my 67 for years and got the *kit* from Summit. They supplied a copper strap to go between the posts but I would guess a good 8 or 10 ga wire might suffice. I never ran without that jumper strap so I can't attest to the what problems there would be without it. I tapped into one of the wires from the wiper motor for my electric choke. I don't remember which it was but a test probe light will show which is hot *only* when the ignition is on. Sounds like I am missing that jump from the S post to the battery cable post. Would that stop the car from getting power? (it sounds like it would… so that could be my problem) You are correct; that yellow wire is for the choke. I was trying to think of where to put it but wasn’t sure what to do with it, any recommendations? - JB From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of DaleSent: Wednesday, September 08, 2004 9:31 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 'The Chevelle Mailing List'Subject: RE: [Chevelle-list] Coil Toil "S" goes to the ignition switch, "I" goes to the coil positive side. On the starter solenoid, you should also have a jumper between the "S" (inside) post and the battery cable post. See http://www.chevellestuff.com/tech/ford_solenoid.htm for assistance. The yellow wire you have going to the carb, is that for an electric choke? If so, it's hot all the time and that's not what you want; you want a connection that's only hot when the engine is running and dead when the engine (ignition) is off. The purple wire goes from the "S" terminal to the fuse block, correct. The yellow wire doesn't go the the wiper motor, only the coil. There are yellow wires (and blue and black) on the wiper motor but they go to the bulkhead connector. See http://www.chevellestuff.com/67stuff/67velle/wiring_diagrams.htm for 67 wiring diagrams. Come someone please take a pic in the link below and let me know what you think. I am just guessing on the end-location on the wires coming off those two bolts. I think I may have them reversed but I good of swore I hooked them up the same way. You never see the purple wire hook to anything else it looks like it goes straight to the fuse block. The yellow wire seems to make stops at the coil (positive term) and the windshield washer, I think. Pic - http://www.crazyrusty.com/chevelle/projects/electrical/full/coiltoil.JPG I put in a new dash harness, engine harness, and front lamp harness. I get a fairly bright light when I test the connectivity between the negative battery terminal and the battery cable (I have the negative cable off and laying to the side). Someone told me that if I get a light when doing that, I have a short somewhere. Does that sound right to you all? Thanks a lot once again, JB <>
