Metal flake takes A LOT more work to hand sand after it has been applied.
I did a 68 Camaro while in high school with a black base and blue/green
metal flake on top. It looked green/black during the day and blue/black at
night. Kind of weird.

Dare to be different. Check with a paint supplier on care & upkeep.
I wonder if the modern day paint compounds can't carry the
metalflake??? A good metalflake paint job sure looked good.

RE: [Chevelle-list] rollin' 12 bolt

2005-03-29 Thread Dan Mascheck
Graham,

I bought a 72 Chevelle on Ebay with a 12 bolt...I was told. Got it home to
find out it was a 10 bolt, but thought I could find a cheap used 12 bolt in
all the junk yards we have around Houston, TX.Boy was I wrong. I did
find one, but it was not cheap, and when we stripped the unit down...It was
not a posi unit...the axels were pitted, so I ended up with an expensive
case.

Well sand blasting and powder coating have made it look great again...A
new Eaton Posi with Richmond 3:73 gears...Two superior axels, not to mention
a new Aluminum housing cover and bearings and the likeI think it would
have been almost as cheap to buy a new unit from Currie or Moser!(GRIN)

I finally got my 12bolt to the house - it's on a home-made rolling platform;
easy to roll out and start on the clean-up and minor disassembly.

http://projectchevelle.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core:ShowItem&g2_itemId=

It's a 12bolt from a '66 SS. It's a non-posi, and it appears to be around a
3.36 gearing (eye-ball count of the yoke turning). I haven't found the
axel/production number of it yet.

Thanks Rick and Mike for your advice. I'm going to try a TIG weld

Subject: [Chevelle-list] BBC oil pans

Hi Folks,
Well, as I started my ('68 Chevelle based) truck up I was pleased to
see that the (new conversion) power steering worked fine, did not
leak,
and did not make noise.

However, the pool of fluid directly under the bellhousing did get my
attention. Turns out the oil dipstick flange on the side of the pan
was
leaking like a sieve. Time for a new pan.

This is for a '68 Chevelle-based street rod with a 454 engine and
TH400
tranny.

My first concern is the cross member. Should I lift the engine a few
inches or should I remove the tranny to slide out the old pan and
insert the new one? Either way is going to be a lot of work for a
seemingly simple problem. If only that crossmember wasn't under the
pan.
Secondly, what pan will fit? I am looking at the Milidon and Moroso
replacement pans but would like to further upgrade since I am
replacing
anyway. I am also concerned with clearances.

Thanks in advance. I appreciate any advice,
Fred Dowaliby

At first it sounded like a battery that took a dump on you, but if you tightened the battery connections, and it works fine, then it sounds to me like you have some dirty battery terminals. Thats usually how it is, works one minute, not the next. I'd clean those up really good(wire brush and baking soda) and it should be okay.

TICKTICKTICKTICKTIII… no just kidding..

I went to start up the 85 camaro so I opened the door (noted
the power was still on), turn the key halfway (noted the engine light and seat
belt lights were bright), turned the key fully and nothing.  All power is
gone, totally.  I left it for a few hours and then came back and the power
was back on.  I put the drivers seat and lock cylinder back in (figured
maybe a circuit wasn’t completing because one or both of those were
out).  Tried it again and again the power completely died.

Went out a few minutes ago, tried it, lost power.
Hooked up my jump starter and put it to 200Amp startfast and the power was back
on immediately.  Tried to start and all I got was a bunch of ticking and
the fan trying to move but not getting far, maybe a quarter of a rotation if
that.  I kept doing it and eventually lost power WITH the jump starter
hooked up.

I tried the jump starter thing because the battery was only
showing 5.8 or something like that.  Now I can’t figure it
out.  It was fine for a long time until I took the drivers seat out and
started messing with the drivers door.  Can you think of anything?

Thanks,

JB

  Every once in a while
my driver's door lock stops working properly, and then magically it fixes
  itself.

  The
symptom of the non-function is that when you turn the key to lock it and then
turn the key back to take the key out of the lock, it unlocks. Likewise, if
you turn the key to unlock it and then turn back to release the key, it locks
  again.

  This
is just a minor nuisance because I can open the door with the key still in the
lock and then take the key out, and I don’t really need the key to lock it.
Also, the problem seems to come and go. However, if anybody has some insight

[Chevelle-list] BBC oil pans

2005-03-29 Thread Fred Dowaliby
Hi Folks,
Well, as I started my ('68 Chevelle based) truck up I was pleased to
see that the (new conversion) power steering worked fine, did not leak,
and did not make noise.

However, the pool of fluid directly under the bellhousing did get my
attention. Turns out the oil dipstick flange on the side of the pan was
leaking like a sieve. Time for a new pan.

This is for a '68 Chevelle-based street rod with a 454 engine and TH400
tranny.

My first concern is the cross member. Should I lift the engine a few
inches or should I remove the tranny to slide out the old pan and
insert the new one? Either way is going to be a lot of work for a
seemingly simple problem. If only that crossmember wasn't under the
pan.

Secondly, what pan will fit? I am looking at the Milidon and Moroso
replacement pans but would like to further upgrade since I am replacing
anyway. I am also concerned with clearances.

Thanks in advance. I appreciate any advice,
Fred Dowaliby

Re: [Chevelle-list] Need good muffler tailpipe shop in DFW.

2005-03-29 Thread Scott Somers

I think the 40's were around $250 installed on
the existing tubing on the 396 and then later ( 100 miles)  after the
468 was put in they repiped it all the way back with 3" tube from the
new headers, replumbed up the electric cut-outs portion, reused the still new
40's and took it back to the rear bumper ( over the rear end with 3"
is a hoot) ...seems that tab was in the $250 to $300 range.  The
468 sure liked the 3" better than  the
2 1/4" straws.  They even opened up the 40's
inlet and outlet to flow the 3".  Some might not do that as it took an
extra 2 minutes.

They did a good job.   Whatever my
next hot rod is they will surely do the intestional work on it as well.

Pronto Muffler on 75 just north of 544 on the
east side service road.  Did real good work on my 68 a couple of months
ago - new super 40's and 3" piping.  Reasonable prices and good clean
work.  They like hot rods.  A couple others were also there that
day.

I don't remember who sent the email about just getting his chevelle painted
and wanted to protect it from stones etc, But I just recvd Summitt's new
catalog, and located in the tool section they advertise this "ISC Racers"
tape as a Polyurethane protective tape against rocks, stones etc. It's about
$30 a roll.

RE: [Chevelle-list] EFI update, it runs! (long)

2005-03-29 Thread Dave Studly
The TPI is a mish-mash of pieces. Base and plenum came from Carlisle,
runners came for free from a friend, throttle body and fuel rails came from
a guy on thirdgen.org

The biggest problem I have is that the intake base is from an '87-newer
F-body engine with the center pair of bolt holes at 72 degrees, instead of
90 degress (to intake face). I tried slotting the holes with my die
grinder, but was unhappy with the results. I either need a Corvette intake,
or an 85-86 F-body intake.

Funny you mention how it might do on a 327, as that is where my TPI is
likely to end up -- in my dad's '63 Vette. I don't if I'll get that far
this summer, though.
