[Chevelle-list] 1969 speedminder cable
Another thing that happened today is that the cable that runs from the knob for adjusting the speedminder to the speedo unit popped out. I didn't see where it came from and wasn't able to tell by looking up under the dash. All of a sudden it was just on the floor. Any tips on where that thing goes? Thanks, John Nasta
RE: [Chevelle-list] gen light off - but need a part
Thanks Bill, I can now tell you first-hand that it's great to have the dash lights working. It's not just great to see how much gas you have or how relatively fast you are going at night for the first time. It's also just one of those things that makes you feel like you accomplished something. Even though it was a simple thing that I could have done a long time ago, the whole time you are driving you can look down and appreciate those lights. Even though I have one definitely out and one that I'm not sure of, it's still a heck of a lot better than nothing. If anybody can spare one of those metal rings that hold the bulbs in, that would be great. Thanks Bill, Chuck, Rick and the others who gave advice. Sorry if I missed anybody (it's late). John Nasta

Re: [Chevelle-list] what paint for rear end?
One thing to note... if you go the powder coat way you have to give them a bare housing... the bushings and insides will never take the heat. If it's already together... paint is the only way. I have to do the same to my rear... i plan to primer it and then paint it a gloss black can get the paint from a local store... or eastwood. I like the idea about using the cherry picker I was going to paint it on stands... always end up scratching off some new paint... Good luck!! Donnie
Re: [Chevelle-list] what paint for rear end?
the only problem with epoxy primer (witch i truly belive in ) is it chalks out after a year or more but if you coat it afterwards with a good hardened semi gloss paint it will hold up forever i did this to my control arms five or six years ago and it is like new still on a practically daily driver

Re: [Chevelle-list] what paint for rear end?
I used a "Catalyzed" Epoxy Primer from Auto paint supply store. In my case, I want the semi-gloss look that was produced by the factory when they used to use lacquer paint or primer under the car but it was poorly done and often did little to stop rust. This enamel product uses a hardener and makes a nice finish. regards mike --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Thanks for the info..one more question?? what paint > did you use? RE: [Chevelle-list] gen light off - but need a part
Those little buggers are a major PIA. When you pull your dash, get some 5 minute epoxy & glue those suckers into the bulb holders. When removing them, it's best to take a pocket screwdriver & work your way around the socket to get them loose from the dash. BillL At 05:22 PM 9/21/2005, you wrote: Well, it didn't take long for a couple of the metal collars that hold the bulbs into the plastic socket to pull out and strand the brand new bulbs inside the gauges. From my 72 assembly manual: Tie rod adjuster bolts 19-24 FT/Lbs. - NOTE-The slot in the adjuster sleeve must not be in located at edge of clamp or between clamp jaws. Outer Tie Rod to Steering Arm - 30-40 ft lbs. I don't see any info on tie rod to center link bolt. There is a Note on the page that says "Maximum torque of 50 lbs to align cotter pin slot - do not back off nut for cotter pin insertion" But I think that it is refering to the tie rod to steering arm connection. I have used soda blasting many times on new structural fabrications. The good thing about it is that it does not stress relieve welds and cause distortion. It is much softer on the material but still does a nice blast job. Thanks for all the coments. I just checked out Summit to get an idea what kind of money we're talking about for hydraulic rollers. RE: [Chevelle-list] gen light on - bulb #1895
p.s. the bulb number is 1895 (or W-1895) for anybody who needs them and wants to save the step of pulling one just to find out the number. I was able to get them locally for $0.25 each. John Nasta
RE: [Chevelle-list] gen light on - Question
Thanks Bill. It turns out Chuck was right. I got into the car and turned the headlights on with the ignition off, and the "gen" light came on. I looked up underneath and there was a gray-wired bulb going into a lower hole on that side hole and nothing in the upper hole. The bulb itself was very dusty, which I'm sure cuts down the brightness. In the course of cleaning the bulb it separated from its base and doesn't work any more. I also found the red lead that I assume is supposed to be in the gen spot. It had a smashed bulb in it. The bulb for the Brake light was also not in its socket, and the wire is hanging down. I'm just going to buy about a dozen of these bulbs and replace them all. I'm guessing that everything will work as long as it's taken care of properly. John Nasta

For me it is usually only the oil light. My temperature sending unit is not hooked up (another one of those pesky little tasks), so I've never seen that one come on. Gen & oil lights will be on. The OP sender is grounded w/o oil pressure & turns the light on. When the car starts, oil pressure opens the ground, and the light goes off. The Gen light get 12 v from the fuse panel & is grounded through the alternator. When the alternator spins & makes 12V, it sends 12 v on both sides of the lamp & it goes off. BL
RE: [Chevelle-list] gen light on - Question
Thanks. I also just thought that I should see if the "gen" light comes on with the lights on but the ignition off. If that happens, then I would say it's definitely a courtesy light in the wrong place. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of Dave Corgill Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2005 11:52 AM To: The Chevelle Mailing List Subject: RE: [Chevelle-list] gen light on - Question At 10:39 AM 9/21/2005, you wrote: > >AAMOF, if I ground the temp lead, should that make the temp light come on? Question for you guys whose dash lights are hooked up properly. When you have the key in the run position, just before you turn it to the start position, which warning lights are on in the dash? Should it be Oil only, Gen & Oil, or all three (Gen, Oil, Temp)? For me it is usually only the oil light. My temperature sending unit is not hooked up (another one of those pesky little tasks), so I've never seen that one come on. The reason I am wondering if the Gen light is supposed to be on at any given time is because assuming that one of my courtesy bulbs is in the Gen spot, I'll need to find out which bulb really belongs in the Gen spot, and make sure it is not burned out. AAMOF, if I ground the temp lead, should that make the temp light come on? I may as well make sure that bulb is in the right place and working too. Thanks, John Nasta

Personnally if I had an original I'd use it over the repop and especially if you want to go original in the future. Either refinish it yourself (I've seen several excellent home resto's) or use the $300 cost of the repop dash panel towards having your spare original professionally done. Also the hole in the firewall for the A/C is different than heater only vehicles. I don't know whether its larger (I'd think) or smaller. If it needs to be larger he may need to get a template from an A/C car to ensure that he cuts in the correct location.
