Personnally if I had an original I'd
use it over the repop and especially if you want to go original in the
future.   Either refinish it yourself (I've seen several excellent
home resto's)  or use the $300 cost of the repop dash panel towards
having your spare original professionally done.

I've read of several issues with the
repops that may or may not bother you - depending on how anal you are about
originality - LOL .

[Chevelle-list] 1969 speedminder cable

2005-09-21 Thread John Nasta
Another thing that happened today is that the cable that runs from the knob
for adjusting the speedminder to the speedo unit popped out. I didn't see
where it came from and wasn't able to tell by looking up under the dash. All
of a sudden it was just on the floor. Any tips on where that thing goes?

Thanks,

RE: [Chevelle-list] gen light off - but need a part

2005-09-21 Thread John Nasta
Thanks Bill,

I can now tell you first-hand that it's great to have the dash lights
working. It's not just great to see how much gas you have or how relatively
fast you are going at night for the first time. It's also just one of those
things that makes you feel like you accomplished something. Even though it
was a simple thing that I could have done a long time ago, the whole time
you are driving you can look down and appreciate those lights. Even though I
have one definitely out and one that I'm not sure of, it's still a heck of a
lot better than nothing. If anybody can spare one of those metal rings that
hold the bulbs in, that would be great.

Thanks Bill, Chuck, Rick and the others who gave advice. Sorry if I missed
anybody (it's late).

One thing to note... if you go the powder coat way you have to give
them a bare housing... the bushings and insides will never take the heat.
If it's already together... paint is the only way.  I have to do the same
to my rear... i plan to primer it and then paint it a gloss black can get
the paint from a local store... or eastwood.

I like the idea about using the cherry picker I was going to paint it
on stands... always end up scratching off some new paint...

Good luck!!

I used a "Catalyzed" Epoxy Primer from Auto paint
supply store. In my case, I want the semi-gloss look
that was produced by the factory when they used to use
lacquer paint or primer under the car but it was
poorly done and often did little to stop rust. This
enamel product uses a hardener and makes a nice
finish.

Those little buggers are a major PIA. When you pull your dash, get some 5
minute epoxy & glue those suckers into the bulb holders. When removing
them, it's best to take a pocket screwdriver & work your way around the
socket to get them loose from the dash.

IIRC, there
were two finishes for different years. Apparently there was a
"pebble" grain and one that looked more like leather. Not sure which
years had which. I believe the repro ones have the pebble grain. I can check it

I have a 70 Malibu and no one rechromes
this dash as far as I have been able to find they do rechrome SS, but not Malibu.  If I were to
refinish the dash myself how do you refinish the chrome areas on the dash so it
will look really good.  I have touched up a few spots with chrome enamel
and it worked ok, but does not give you the shine of chrome, more of a dull
silver.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Personnally if I had an original I'd use it over the
repop and especially if you want to go original in the future.
Either refinish it yourself (I've seen several excellent home resto's)  or
use the $300 cost of the repop dash panel towards having your spare original
professionally done.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Steering Linkage Torque

2005-09-21 Thread Rick Schaefer
From my 72 assembly manual:
Tie rod adjuster bolts 19-24 FT/Lbs. - NOTE-The slot in the adjuster sleeve must not be in located at edge of clamp or between clamp jaws.

Outer Tie Rod to Steering Arm - 30-40 ft lbs.

I don't see any info on tie rod to center link bolt.  There is a Note on the page that says "Maximum torque of 50 lbs to align cotter pin slot - do not back off nut for cotter pin insertion"  But I think that it is refering to the tie rod to steering arm connection.

I have used soda blasting many times on new structural fabrications.
The good thing about it is that it does not stress relieve welds and cause

Hydraulic rollers are the way to go if you've got
the extra money. More lift and the valves can be held closed or open for a
more optimal length of time to facilitate filling/emptying the chambers. In
other words, the steepness of the lobe incline can be more radical because
the roller lets the parts move against one another without friction. The BIG
payoff is in lift and lobe shape and maximum air/fuel charge in the
cylinder. There is just no arguing with it.

Hydraulic flat is next best, IMHO, and is what I
went with on my 402 build. I used Edelbrock oval port heads and a Comp
Cams Xtreme Energy grind and I'm pickled tink over it. It runs and sounds
outstanding (it had THE best idle lope I have ever heard in a car that is
driveable - positively gnarly). I've been very happy with my choice but,
that said, if I had it to do over again, I'd go the extra dough and get
rollers. THere's just something about all the rotating hardware on bearings
that makes perfect sense to my wee little dinasaur brain. Compared to
rollers, flat tappets seem, well, so 70's...

Thanks Bill. It turns out Chuck was right. I got into the car and turned the
headlights on with the ignition off, and the "gen" light came on. I looked
up underneath and there was a gray-wired bulb going into a lower hole on
that side hole and nothing in the upper hole. The bulb itself was very
dusty, which I'm sure cuts down the brightness. In the course of cleaning
the bulb it separated from its base and doesn't work any more. I also found
the red lead that I assume is supposed to be in the gen spot. It had a
smashed bulb in it. The bulb for the Brake light was also not in its socket,
and the wire is hanging down. I'm just going to buy about a dozen of these
bulbs and replace them all. I'm guessing that everything will work as long
as it's taken care of properly.

Gen & oil lights will be on. The OP sender is grounded w/o oil pressure &
turns the light on. When the car starts, oil pressure opens the ground,
and the light goes off. The Gen light get 12 v from the fuse panel & is

sends 12 v on both sides of the lamp & it goes off.

The reason I am wondering if the Gen light is supposed to be on at any given

I'll need to find out which bulb really belongs in the Gen spot, and make
sure it is not burned out.

Also the hole in the firewall for the A/C is different than heater only vehicles.   I don't know whether its larger (I'd think) or smaller.  If it needs to be larger he may need to get a template from an A/C car to ensure that he cuts in the correct location.

What are you calling a system?   The underhood parts should work, brackets are different from big block to small block though.

The heater box (under dash) may be different.  I know early years had cable controlled doors, flaps etc;  while later years (my 72 ) have vacumn controlled doors etc.  I don't know what year the changeover occured.

I believe that if the dash board control panel (heat, air, fan) matches the heater box thats used he should be OK.

Hey Guys,Long time reader, first time poster.  I have a 70 Chevelle 350/T350 that I have been restoring for about 5 years.  It's almost back on the road (i can't wait).
My question is about the airconditioning system.  Mine is fine but I have an extra system off of a 71 ElCo.  Will it fit a 70 chevelle?  I dont know what the changes were from 70 to 71 and a friend wants to buy it for his 70.  What can/can't work? What is different?
