[Chevelle-list] Black Radiator Water?
Hey All, A few months back I bought this 62 Cadillac. It had been sitting, not running for roughly 7 years. Just about two weeks ago I got it driving. I rebuilt the carb and water pump on it, and did a general tune it. It runs like new, and I've driven it about 100 miles or so this past week. Well this weekend I was checking the fluids on it...I pulled the radiator cap, and the water was black. I stuck my finger in there, and it looked like I stuck my finger in black grease. The water was barely down. It doesn't run hot, on the gauge, from C to H, its only about a quarter of the way up. When I rebuild the water pump and all that, it wasn't black water. What could cause that? The oil is nice and clean, no water in it. The engine doesn't smoke. Could it be the old radiator hoses or something? The heater isn't hooked up either. Any ideas? I figure I'll flush it out, drive it some, then see if it happens again. Thanks, -Tim

I have the exact same problem with a 454 in my 95 Suburban. I also had a clay like sludge in the bottom of my overflow bottle. I am suspecting my problem is a head gasket but can't say for sure.Godspeed, Dan SolomonIt is a mistake to allow any mechanical object to realize you are in a hurry.http://www.freewebs.com/chevelles1970/ To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Mon, 9 Jun 2008 13:52:24 -0400From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [Chevelle-list] Black Radiator Water?Hey All,A few months back I bought this 62 Cadillac. does it look like oil?? then again from sitting and a fresh we.p you've got some crap moving round the flush idea and refill is a great place to start--did you change thermostat-with flush would be a smart thing to do. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Monday, June 09, 2008 1:52 PM Subject: [Chevelle-list] Black Radiator Water? Needless to say I was not pleased when my 2005 crate 350 with HEI cranked strongly but refused to start. In two previous episodes it started 20 minutes after opening the hood. This time I waited 30 minutes and when it still wouldn't start called the Hagerty service folks and had it flatbedded the 13 miles to home. Naturally it started instantly after being deposited in my garage. Today I replaced the HEI module and coil for the awesome total of $38 from my local Kragen/Shucks/Checker store, drove it 30 minutes, shut it off 30 minutes and it started just fine. Cured? Maybe. Re: [Chevelle-list] Black Radiator Water?
I would drain it, fill w/ water (assuming you live in a place where it doesn't freeze this time of year and are not taking any long hot trips with it), run it around for the afternoon, drain it, repeat a few times and see if it starts coming out cleaner. Could just be crud that was sitting in the block and got flushed out when you started running it. No point in putting anti-freeze in there until you flush the crud out. I would change the hoses too. You may as well do that while you're draining it. Can't hurt and they are inexpensive and easy to install. Sounds like you found a fun car. What body style is it? [Chevelle-list] Sandblaster Question: Off Topic
Just wanted to run this past the list before I made the wrong decision. Well, I'm looking for a small sandblaster for small jobs. And I noticed that one has a different look vs. the other so I'm sure the is a difference in something, I'm just not sure which is better. They are both similar in price but which one is better? Any pros or cons of one vs. the other. Thanks for any input. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=95014 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93889 Thanks, Kyle
Re: [Chevelle-list] Sandblaster Question: Off Topic
They operate the same, only difference is capacity. I have the first one used it this AM for the first time in ages, worked fine for me.With either of those, you will need a 60 or 80 gallon compressor. I just upgraded my compressor last fall, today was the first time I used it with the larger tank. I was using a 30 gallon sears compressor I was continuosly waiting for it to refill. The new (60 gal) was not near so annoying. On Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 6:41 PM, Kyle Bennett [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Just wanted to run this past the list before I made the wrong decision. Re: [Chevelle-list] Sandblaster Question: Off Topic
So I'm assuming the second one has some kind of cap or plug that closes off the fill hole. I see that the first one has a closeable screw on cap over the fill hole. Yes the Easy Fill type will not require a funnel to load. Re: [Chevelle-list] Sandblaster Question: Off Topic
Kyle, The easy fill style has a handle with an inverted disc to rubber gasket seal. You lift the handle as you pressurize the tank and it self seals. I have this type and I'm very pleased with it. Re: [Chevelle-list] Black Radiator Water?
I agree with John. BUT I would hook up the heater and turn it on so as to flush all out that may be settled in. How does your oil look? Smell? Check for any trace of anti-freeze in the oil just to be sure you don't have a bigger problem. -- Original message -- From: John Nasta [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would drain it, fill w/ water (assuming you live in a place where it doesn't freeze this time of year and are not taking any long hot trips with it), run it around for the afternoon, drain it, repeat a few times and see if it starts coming out cleaner. Re: [Chevelle-list] Black Radiator Water?
Good idea to turn the heat on. May as well flush out the core too. Change your heater hoses too. It could be dry rot coming off of the heater radiator hoses.
