I use the Comp Cams break in lube with every oil change. It has all the stuff
that us flat tappet guys need and its available at any performance store. Its
$17.50 a bottle up here in Alberta,Canada but...Its a pretty small price to pay
for the peace of mind knowing that my cam is getting the proper lubrication...

I did the painless system on my 67. It was ok, but I am in electronics. The
painless system uses the same color codes as the original harness and many
features of the new micro-fuse blocks in current production cars and trucks.

It comes down to a few questions like Brad said. What do you want such as 14
circuits? Do you think you can pigtail and splice the harness back in?

I was doing mine one evening and a skunk scampered by the garage door. We had
a few tense moments.

I haven't completely rewired my carbut I've done
a fair share of work on it. If you want to just rewire
everything stock, I HIGHLY recommend MH Wire
Harness's. I used one of their harness's in my 66,
and it was perfect. Colors the same as original, came with
all the new clips/connectors, correct lengths, etc. I know
 that True-Connections, www.true-connections.com stocks and
sells MH harness's. I've never used or seen
Painless wiring harness's, so I don't know about
themthe only thing I've heard about them is that
they are more of a generic type harness.

As far as wiring...it's pretty involved. There is a
forward lamp harness, engine harness, dash harness,
intermediate wiring, and the rear lamp harness. Not
impossiblebut requires a decent amount of work.

Pelle there are a lot better PROVEN choices for a steering box upgrade for your
71. Read this page by Jim Shea - he is a retired GM Engineer.
http://www.chevelles.com/techref/shea_1.html You may get the box cheap,
but shipping to Europe will not be cheap especially for a box which may not
work.

I am using the Monte Carlo SS gear box now but will be removing it soon to
replace it with my modified original box. The Monte box has much improved road
feel, works with our chassis does not significantly impair the turning
radius. That newer box may or may not be an improvement on what you have.
The Monte or Jeep GRAND CHEROKEE box would both be proven options for you.

Just my 2 cents.

Harlan, I just got through reading the thread that Bill sent. I work for
Chevron Oronite Company, we are a Petrochemical part of Chevron. That is the
part of Chevron that manufactures the additives that go into lubricating oils.
Many other companies use our additives in their engine oils. I use the DELO,
D-iesel E-ngine L-ubricating O-il, because it still contains the sufficient
amount of Zinc and Phosphorous to protect our flat tappet engines. Along with
the Zinc and Phosphorous there is also a small amount of Moly in this oil.
Reading the thread just reaffirmed my belief in the products that we make and
sell at COC.

[Chevelle-list] Let's try again....

2008-07-11 Thread Mark Hall
OK - let's try this again(second time to post my questions...)

I've recently gotten around to working on my '67 Chevelle after ignoring for
it several years (I know... bad bad bad)

I did a LOT of pre-start work on the motor to ensure I didn't cause any
damage - which seemed to pay off as it started right up the first time.
(changed oil, drained all the fuel, pre-lubed extensively etc etc)

The motor (built 350) is running pretty good except for two issues that I'd
like help with;

1. I 'think' the vacuum advance isn't working - when I put the timing light
on the engine, the timing doesn't change at all with or without the vacuum
advance connected... shouldn't it change? Would this cause 'popping' through
the exhaust at higher RPMs? (~4000rpm) - i.e. no advance for higher rpms?

and

2. At sustained higher rpm (say 3000rpm+) - there is coolant dripping from
the bellhousing - I'm assuming this means I've got a bad freeze plug on the
back of the motor - anyone else ever had this? It doesn't drip unless the
motor is running up - i.e. no drips at idle. I've verified there are no
leaks anywhere else on the motor.

Thanks everyone - I hope to have the rust-bucket running and driving good
enough for next year's Chevelle-a-bration.

How about some responses?

Mark
