Subject: [Chevelle-list] 327 question

Drove the '66 to work today, and decided to throw this
question out to "the Council":

My car runs great, and the 327 has an aluminum intake,
speed pro 10.5:1 pistons, crane powermax cam
(272/284), Comp Cams roller rockers, and freshly built
camel hump heads with pinned in studs. Valves have
been redone within the past 2-3 years with MAYBE 1000
miles on them, and I have new valve springs and
retainers (also Crane, to match the cam).

All that being said, it runs great with one small pet
peave.. When I drive the car it runs flawlessly UNTIL
I get to 2000 RPMs on the tach, at which point I hear
a slight "chatter". That's the only way I can
describe it. I've heard hung up lifters before, and
that's not the noise- that's a chronic
"tap-tap-tap-tap" (like 1-2-3-4). This, in my best
impression, goes "dadadadadadada" in a much faster
interval, thus the chatter description. It sounds
like it's on the driver side of the engine, and
happens ONLY at 2K RPMs.. I drop back, it goes away-
I increase throttle PAST 2K RPMs, it goes away. I
thought maybe it might be something bumping the
dipstick or something stupid like that, so I moved the
dipstick and it still happens.

I don't think it's worth pulling the engine back out
to check, but it's damned frustrating. Anyone have
any guesses? I do not have valve guides and I
wondered if it might be that I need them. Another
note, I had the same noise when I had my 260/272 cam
in it, which I just swapped out to the 272/284 as of
this year. I thought maybe the disassembly and
reassembly might make it go away (with readjustment of
the valves), but it's still there so I'm guessing it's
lower end noise. But from where and why ONLY at that
revolution?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I got a lift and stand kit from Northern. A couple of

easy to tip over, in my opinion. Also my lift has fold

Wheel diameter doesn't really change the
backspace requirements. Wheel width does and tire width selection becomes more
important when you go up in diameter. For example, you can get by with a 275
tire on a 15x8 wheel but when you jump up to a 17 or larger,a 275 tire would
need at least a 9" width to work correctly because of the shorter
  sidewall.

Thanks Clint. 275's are what I decided on. When
I upgrade my wheels later, I'll consider 17's and I'll be asking once again

  I see people running 295's on a 15x8 but
that's squeezing the sidewalls in a little too much for me. 275's will
work fine on that wheel & backspace combo.

I just put Air Ride on a '68 and did the
extra work to COMPLETELY tuck the bags up as high as possible.
When all the air dumps out of the system, the car sits on a 1/2 inch
rake, with only 1 1/4 inches of clearance from the skid plate in the
front to the ground.

I used Hedman's Elite series header that
they call a "shorty".  They look similar to the Patriots, but use a
thicker flange and one size larger guage for the tubing.  They fit
well, and there is plenty of clearance from the ground when all the air
is out of the bags.

rant away clint, i'm right behind you, been there
done that. we "regular list members" or "old timers" get that monthly email,
then we se the "please take me off the list" emails daily, weekly? its so often
i forget.i find what i do is read the messages that i relate to, others i
delete.i kept the instructions for the list, i wouldnt want to be stuck if the
list turned out to be other than what i was looking for.
this list has been VERY helpful to me in the past,
and i hope that my commentary has helped other members. humor is also
nice.
what was it Rodney King said? "can't we all just

i think for those new list members, the

As Larry mentioned below, these people wanting to
unsubscribe always seem to post Right After they receive the monthly List
  Commands.
I've been a member of this Chevelle List for a
very long time. Have even unsubscribed and returned more than once. This also
isn't the only mailling list I've belonged to,either. However,I always keep a copy of each one's List Commands in my file
archives. What's so hard about that? I think what really annoys most of us
when people want off our list,,is their demeanor in doing so. They could
explain they deleted the instructions and could we please help them. Nope, most
of them tell us to quit sending them email or even demand so.
A little politeness goes a long way but
unfortunately, there's not much of that left in the online
  community.

How Smart Is Your Right Foot?

This is so funny that it will boggle your mind. And, you will keep
trying

it at least 50 more times to see if you can outsmart your foot. But you
can't!!!

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and
make

clockwise circles with it.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right
hand..
Your foot will change direction!!!

I told you so... And there is nothing you can do about it. Make sure you
pass this on to your friends... They won't be able to believe it
either!!!

It rough but looks like a great project. I suggest,
you get a plan together. Identify everything you want
and can afford to do. Write it down on paper or a
spreadsheet. It will change but at least you have a
basic plan. Here are a couple of things that
disappointed me.
My freshly powder coated frame was trashed at the body
shop.
Get any vendor to set time frames. That way the car is
not sitting for years at someones place of business.
Get the body work done first.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Lower control arms

2006-04-01 Thread Bill Bradley IV

Eddie

I got mine (just lucky I guess) off of eBay for 40 dollars most of it was
shipping, just don't forget new bushings. there are kits out there from
several sources to box your own, just pull yours and take them to your local
welder/muffler shop. There are also as you've heard boxed arms available out
there, and even adjustable arms if you are so inclined. I found mine to make
a world of difference. my tail end was awful sloppy before I converted to
boxed control arms. the handling is really sweet, no more unintentional
fishtailing. great fairly cheap handling improvement for my almost daily
driver.

hope this helps

inexpensive ones. If not then which kind of lower control arms should I
stay with. I have a 350 SB and 350 tranny street and freeway driver. thanks

I can't speak to 1969 Chevelles, My basket case 66 came with a 66 Malibu

original passenger side SS396 quarter had an antenna hole in it.

Steve,

After closer inspection of your "new" Chevelle, I noticed the radio
antenna is located on the rear fender where as the antenna on my 69 is
located on the passenger side front fender. My Chevelle is all orginial
and I was wondering if anybody knows if the rear mounted antenna was
owner installed or if the rear mounting was a dealer option.

Do you remember where yours was mounted way back then?

This list has the best mix of knowledgeable folks coupled with
people who normally wouldn't even think about working on their car, but do
because they can get good intelligent (for the most part) information,
without being told they are dumb for asking. Sometimes people just need some

Maturity and respect for fellow Chevelle owners is what make this list

Again, I hate to interject here but the Fed
raises rates to check inflation because BUSINESS
wants them to, not because government wants them to.
99.% of the people in the world do not know that
inflation is TAX. It is not discussed by politicians
and media because a) it is over the head of most
media people and b) it is over the head of nearly
all attorneys and our politicians are all attorneys.

Inflation is the systematic devaluation of a
currency. When you see the "national debt" number,
what is not discussed is to whom that debt is owed.
The fact is, the debt is owed almost entirely to
American citizens (and their pension plans, IRAs and
401ks) in the form of US Treasury bills and notes
and bonds (among which is the ubiquitous Savings
Bond). Inflation benefits "net debtors", that is,
people or countries or companies who owe more money
in debt than is owed to them by others. The
government is the biggest "net debtor" by a gigantic
margin. Thus, inflation HELPS the government because
it allows them to pay YOU back with dollars that
have been "devalued"...that is, they are worth less
than the dollars you loaned them when you bought the
bond, T-bill, T-note, etc.

All you Vietnam era vets and citizens might
remember that at the end of the Vietnam War the
national debt was staggering. In fact, the US could
not pay it off so the government, then under Richard
Nixon, devalued the currency 25% in one day. And
this was on top of inflation rates that ranged from
12% to 20% over the preceeding three or four years.
Folks, this is "inflation" gone mad. Some of you
might also remember stories about the inflation rate
in Brazil being 100% per month and things like that.
That, too, is just the government in power
"devaluing" the currency. It happens all over the
world, all the time.

If you really want to see true change in
this country, demand that your schools teach people
two things: The "time value of money" (also called
"discounted cash flow" and how to figure it out) and
the difference between "progressive" and
"regressive" tax systems. If ordinary people
understood these two things, every politician in
office would be thrown out on his or her fat behind

of regressive taxes alone every politician in office would be arrested and
charged with sedition. The old saying "the rich get richer and the poor get
poorer" exists not because rich people screw poor people but because the
government screws poor people. They do this because they can - you see, the
rich people "get it". They understand how the tax system works and how to
circumvent the system. Poor people don't have the knowledge so they get
screwed. It isn't a big conspiracy, it is your elected representatives
creating a tax system that enables them to tax the people with the smallest
voice - and that is you and me.

Finally, permit me to say that, I can teach
ANYONE who graduated from high school these two ideas and the fact that our
high schools do NOT teach these things is, IMHO, nearly criminal. I was
taught these ideas in the first accounting class I took to become a CPA.
Every CPA understands this stuff which is why all CPAs hate taxes. But that
doesn't mean only CPAs "get it". This stuff is pretty easy when it is taught
properly.
