I started out collecting 55 chev's and playing with them.
There all gone, one's you could aford to buy and fix up
and race at the drags.
I then went to Chevells and there just as much as my 55.
On the West Coast,I haven't filler in a lead seam area,
but thats why I joined Team Chevelle...To learn.

Its been great reading all the information comming out
on the list.

My Grandmothers car was a lemon.

Ill keep reading and learning.
Thanks for the heads-up.

[Chevelle-list] Bondo/Lead ....response from Howard

2007-02-20 Thread Howard
Trooper,

Alot of strange things happen in the auto industry.

My grand-mother bought a new 65 chev and never liked
it. My grandfather being a large person said the car
was fine. The problem was the steering and the paint.
Hard to steer and everytime she wash the car,the bucket
of water would show a white color. The car was white.
Ten years later when I grew up and learned autobody.
I went and restored her car. This new chev, off the show
room, had a bent frame, body filler in the front hood,
the trunk was also full of filler.Sanding down this four
door, two doors were green and two doors were brown.
This car was a total mess.My Grandfather should have
listen and to it to a different shop and have it check
out and then knocked some heads around at that chev
dealer ship.

Any thing can happen in the world of cars.I have lead
seems in my 69 Chevelle that I just painted.Mabey they
ran out of lead and grab a can of filler and a case of
Beer and said what the hell!!!

I that helps.
My new painting dvd will be out into weeks.

All factory cars and trucks seams were lead filled.End of
Story. If you have bondo in your seams, someone put it there.
If you have the money to have your ride diped and boil out.
Then you can have it leaded again,if not, weld in the seams
and grind it and use an all-metal to fill in the cracks.
Then you would have a great lasting repair.

Hello, I have been a member of this list but have never posted before, but now I must.  I cannot remove the lock cylinder from the steerig column.  I have done everything that the book say to do including thr removal of the thin casting material that should allow me to push in on the spring latch on the bottom of the cylinder.  I do not see any spring latch or can I push in on the lock cylinder.  If anyone can help it will be appreciated.  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It pretty much depends on your budget as always,Bob. A good 350 block (either two or four bolt),10:1 compression pistons,a pair of 64 or 66cc heads( I like the AFR 180's or 195's), hydraulic roller cam with 225-240 degree duration @ .050 with around .525 lift and 110 centers, Edelbrock Performer RPM or Airgap intake, 670-770 Avenger Holley carb, 1 3/4" headers with free-flowing 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust system, and a good electronic ignition like a Mallory or MSD should get you in the 400hp/400tq range.
Just my opinion but if it were my car,I would build a 383,instead. These cars are heavy and need the extra torque. Cost will be about the same.

Some news...

I'm happy to say that the long awaited 1964-67 El Camino cab moldings are
finally here. According to the rules of how much percentage markup you need
to make in order for a business to make sense, I should price them at about
$275-ish for the set (4 pcs), but I will sell them to list members for $250
(plus shipping and tax if applicable) for a limited time. If you are
interested, let me know privately.

Thanks,
John Nasta

p.s. The 4 pieces are also available separately (top left, top right, side
left, side right).

Bob, it really depends on how you plan to use the engine.  If doing a lot of wide open throttle blasts then you need 650 or better.  All with vacuum secondaries due to automatic trans.  Otherwise the 600 will most likely give you great response on street and will perform quite well.  Did you put the 78 jets in the primary or the secondary?  Way too big for primary.  Probably 71's would be as big as needed.  Also, where you live ( altitude) will have some say in all this.  John

I've looked to you guys for help and im back . I have a 350 with approx 375 horses .  I found out the carb that came off my 283 is a Holley 600 double pumper.,when we swapped motors,we put it on the new engine. Its flooding out on the secondary's every once in a while so i got a buddy to help me rebuild it when we get some time this week. before i put it on, should i think about another carb, such as a 700 or 750?I don't know what jets it has ,but i bought a set of #75 jets to put in it. is this enough air (600cfm) or should i look else where?

Sorry to disagree but peks is PEX (cross-linked polyethylene). 1 inch in 10 feet is less than 1/8 inch per foot. National Standards (IAMPO OR UPC ) for horizontal drain pipe is 1/4 inch per foot (2 %  slope). 3 inch line or larger can be installed @ 1/8 inch per foot( 1% slope) if the Authority Having Jurisdiction first gives approval. 8 inch line and above can be embedded  @ 1/16 inch per foot. Even if you do not get a permit at least install it to code. One day you may want to sell the property and may find out a home inspection turns up illegal work.

Hay larry: ive just build a family dollar store and a 5 unit mini shopping center. ive plumbed all of my rent houses using a water line source called peks. it is a flexable plastic type pipe that wont burst when frozen. the only problem, is finding a guy the has the tool too crimp the connectors on. you can buy it at the hardware store and install it underground before you pour your slab,as well as your drain pipes. just remember, drop in the drain pipe should be one inch in 10 feet for most "city codes". glad i could give some help back to the LIST .everyone has been so helpfull to me!!

My garage project has been on hold for a while, but I finally have footers dug .    My wife suggested that I install a bathroom.   I was all for it til I got 3 bids that were way more than  I could afford ( and more than I thought reasonable).    Today I got 2 comparably reasonable estimates ( is $2600 reasonable?) for a comode, utility sink and water & sewer connections.

$2600 otherwise spent would get me a  4-post lift or LS1 for the camaro. I could improvise a sink install and could live without the comode.   So for the long term is the bathroom a good investment?

Hi Craig:  I grew up in the 60's & I can relate to what you said.  Would I still like to have my L-79 SS from 1965?  Of course I would but it's long gone to the crusher.  Sold it in 74 after the Army & during my first marriage.  Had no place to keep it anyway & the last thing on my mind was owning a 40 year old car in 2005.  Aftermarket was the way back then.  Either performance or looks, and most of the time you sold what you took off.  Never occurred to us to save for numbers matching in the future.  The number of people that are original owners of these muscle machines are few & far between.  I wish my Mom had a house & garage where I could have stored mine for 30 years.  Even as a rustbucket it would have been worth a fortune today as an oringinal L-79.  You don't even want to know about the 58-59 Baseball card collection I sold for $10.  Bought a tank of gas & went out on a date.  Today I own my 4th 65 SS and every time I drive it, it makes me smile.  No numbers matching anything but some of the sheetmetal.  No muncie shifter and no chalk marks anywhere.  Close the hood & it looks like the 60's.  A lot of shine and custom wheels.  Not much stock under the hood either and the flowmasters are like music.  Nothing stuffy about me or my car and people let me know they approve all the time.  I admire and respect the stockers and the people that build them and if I did have that first 65, I'm afraid it would have to be a trailer queen today.  Personally, I want to drive, have fun and leave the numbers to the purists.  Let them worry about the right screws, bolts, and chalk marks.  If it's your car you do whatever makes you smile whether that's going for 1000 points, pro street or in between!!  And NEVER condemn those that don't share your views.  To each his own.  That's one of the beauty's of this hobby.  The flexibi lty to be yourself!

Well said Craig. I too grew up in the '70's doing as you said, except I was a Ford man back then . As I "restore" my 66, my plans are to go original within reason - the body and interior will be original, but I will make safety and performance upgrades. And like you, if I use after market parts, I will keep the original parts for the next guy or gal, if I ever sell this thing of course...

I don't know about anyone else, but I grew up in the muscle car era - had a '66 GTO in high school and worked at a local factory as a press operator to pay for it. The FIRST thing that happened to that car was ET mags. Then headers and 'vette exhaust under the door. Then a Holley 850 double because my buddy's Z28 spanked me. Then a Hurst shifter. I have no idea what happened to the original parts. That was muscle car era hotrodding. Hotrodding 32 Fords was a whole other thing but with muscle cars it was all about exhaust, cams, wheels, carbs and once in a while some serious dude would port the heads - and with cast iron, that was no mean potatoes -  or stroke & bore. Only the south end greasers did that stuff...not us north end frat boys - and they cleaned our clocks at the local 1/4 every Saturday night.

Today, muscle cars are about getting the chalk marks correct on the rear end diff and sourcing NOS bias ply tires. I'm sorry, but I don't really get that. I mean, I respect it and I respect the meticulous attention to detail, etc., but it so not me. For years, I didn't even know how to tell if the block matched the chassis - I didn't know or think it was important. When I got my Chevelle years ago, as soon as I had the money, off came the heads and on went aluminum...and a cam and carb and wheels with some swingin' KDW tires. Oh yeah, and headers and xpipe and Flowmasters and lower springs and a Mallory and the A/C is out in the shed. Now it's MY car. It sounds, looks, and drives like the nasty old girl she is. It ain

Hi Jim,

I am not a Camaro aficionado, but what do you mean by RS SS 350 5 sp? I always thought that the RS was a small block (350) and the SS was a big block, the same way that the "sister car" (Firebird) had a Formula (350) and a Trans Am (400).

I'm not claiming to know the answer nut I am curious about the "RS SS" thing. I like those first gen Camaros and would buy a convertible if I could. Now you can buy basically all of the body parts too, and even a jig for aligning the parts, so you can basically build one from scratch. Pretty cool.

The main negative feature of a DZ302 engine is their lack of low end torque and corresponding need for steep gearing. My 69 Z/28 had 4.10 cogs and still could have used something shorter like 4.56's or 4.88's. The standard ratio in those cars was a 3.73 and they ran like a dog with them. Unless you plan on using a five or six speed trans,I would build something bigger.

Basically all you need is a small jornal 327 block, a 283 crank , 302 spec pistons (or the correct hieght if you go longer rods) and double hump fuelie 2.02 heads w/accesory bolt holes. A reproduction ''stock'' cam is on the market I am sure, but I would lean toward a modern solid lifter cam that would be worth way more power.

Although pricey, the cross ram manifold makes those engines stand out. Even though Holleys may be original, I would consider a pair of 500 cfm AFB's.

I guess it depends on if you want a clone original or to build one that makes big power (but then you might as well build a long rod 383 and use the cross ram on it!) .

ACES membership is well worth the cost.   There are many ACES
affiliated local clubs, some more active than others.   Most are
listed here: http://links.chevelles.net/links/Clubs/   And even if
there isn't anything local,  you'll enjoy the Bi-Monthly magazine.

There are 2 chevelle regional shows close to you in the next 2 months.
The Kansas City show is an ACES regional and the Wichita show is
organized by the Midwest Council of Chevelle clubs.   You'll enjoy
either or both.

Sorry , we have no reference to that BBC intake casting number.  Is it for sure a BBC intake?  Has the number been read correctly?  What is the casting date?  Is it an oval port or rectangular port intake?  Cast iron or aluminum?  High rise or low rise?  Holley or Quadrajet carb bolt pattern?

Jim the unit was 400.00 and i bought an install kit that was 220. the chevy dealership knows me by name after all they have done to my cars and they said it would run around 125. to install. the install kit has new bearing and all seals. the bearing surfaces are the important part  on the axles. i have one axle that is pitted just a little and the guy said i should replace it or some day it might start  loosing rear end grease.im looking for one know, but it should not hurt to drive it for a while.hope this helps..bob
