Please!    You have to check out the validity of a virus
before spreading the warning. This is a hoax. Norton is made by Symantec
and this is from the Symantec site's hoax virus section:

Symantec Security Response encourages you to ignore any messages
regarding this hoax. It is harmless and is intended only to cause
unwarranted concern.
Also Known As: RETURNED OR

Type: Hoax

This is not a virus; it is a hoax, and it should be ignored. The
following are three known varients of this hoax:
Sample 1:
WARNING
If you receive an email titled "It Takes
Guts to Say 'Jesus', DO NOT OPEN IT.
It will erase everything on your hard
drive. This information was announced
on 21 April by IBM stating that this is
a very dangerous virus, much worse than
"Melissa", and that there is NO remedy

Some very sick individual has succeeded
in using the reformat function from Norton
Utilities causing it to completely erase
all documents on the hard drive. It has
been designed to work with Netscape
Navigator and microsoft Internet Explorer.
It destroys Macintosh and IBM compatible
computers. This is a new, very malicious
virus and not many people know about it.
Pass this warning along to EVERYONE in your

Once again, pass this along to EVERYONE

to your computer components and render
them useless. Immediately delete any mail

Please practice cautionary measures and

filled out on my desk for a 1/2 ton four door Dodge with Hemi engine,Lone
Star package with polished 20" wheels, top of the line Infinity sound
system, etc, definitely no stripper. Price will be $24,700. I've always
been a GM man but they do not currently build a true four door 1/2 ton
truck with full 6' bed. Neither does Ford. On top of that, both GM and
Ford are priced substantially higher.

I believe last I heard the Hemi is only available in 3/4 ton and up trucks. No 1/2 tons. Also I really question you finding a hemi truck at under 25G's. Even a stripped out 2wd, no option anything... probably would need to specially ordered if ya did... But I could be wrong as I no real drive to buy anything with a Dodge logo on it and haven't looked at them much. But yes cool none the less though.

I have been waiting to drive one of the 1/2 ton four door Dodge trucks with Hemi power and the Lone Star package(20"wheels). Having driven just about every new truck out there with just about every engine/trans combo,I can tell you the Hemi Dodge will smoke a Chevy truck with the 6.0 engine. One truck I drove was a 3/4 ton longbed with Hemi power & auto and it was pretty impressive for something so heavy. One of the new 1/2 tons with that engine should be a fun ride, especially for less than $25K.

Nope, wrong, Dodge is offering the Hemi in the 1500 (1/2 ton). They go

[Chevelle-List] Non Chevelle (Hemi)

2002-12-27 Thread Jeff Fischer
Well last night I picked up my new pick-up truck with the Hemi motor in it
and it is faster than my 454 in my
Chevelle!!.NOT! :) Truck goes well for a 2500
class truck and has a nice sound but would be hard to label it as quick. It
is a lot more fun to drive than my previous Chevy Silverado pick-up however.

2002-12-06 Thread Jeff Fischer

To unsubscribe from this service you must first purchase a
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit. The unit can be

obtained from most hardware stores and dental clinics.
Be sure to obtain the proper permits to operate the unit from the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Food and Drug Administration in

Washington D.C. USA.
Be sure to carefully unpack the kit and place each component in its

accompanying mesh safety bag.
Mount the Pershing DF4 mesinator on top of the perforated Gerring Mach

77 refibulator and attach them using the eight-millimeter torque
fork.
Be sure that the refibulator is mounted at a 66 degree angle and
properly dispersed so that it is flush with the curved section of the

Pyrex thistle tube.
Place the four sections of the triangular separation gear into the
posture cylinder and lock them into place using the band aid adhesive
strip.
Insert the wiggling pin into the wobbling hole, making sure that it

seated correctly.
Place the D cell battery and the eleven 9 volt batteries in the power

chamber.
The device should be calibrated before operation using the optional

digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation.
Insert the digital corkscrew through the electronic combustion service

chamber using caution not to touch the reinforced tungsten igniter
control module and quickly turn the inverter drive to 28.6 degrees.
Turn the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit upside

down and hit the bottom plate with a 48-ounce ball-peen hammer while

shaking the unit vigorously.
Force open the door to the incineration valve compartment and set the

pressure gauge to 719 psi.
Close the door and seal it shut with duct tape.
The unit should now be properly calibrated and ready to use.
Before activating the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription
Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it to a height of 229 feet

above sea level to insure that the unit receives the proper oxygen level

and barometric pressure.
Point the aerial to 17 degrees north by northeast to within the
parameters of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite and apply pressure to

the wing shaft on the southern most section of the modular
accelerator.
Using the special ratchet adapter supplied with the unit, rotate the

heater core to the "on" position. The "on" position
has been obtained
when the green light begins to flash, signifying that the red light is

about to go off.
Once the red light is off, flip the toggle switch labeled
"ON/OFF" to
the "ON" position and count to 47 before logging on to the
system.
Logon using your username and password and wait for the prompt.
Once prompted you must check the box with the appropriate action you

wish to take and then press the pressure release button and turn off the

compressor while turning the hand crank at 231 meters per minute.
Next, press control, alt, delete, caps lock, shift, number lock, escape

and tab simultaneously.
Press enter. You will have one second to complete the procedure.
If you fail to respond in the time limit allowed, simply purchase a new

Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit and start from

the beginning.
Please remember that this is the only way we will accept for you to

unsubscribe from this service.
We have made every attempt to simplify the procedure for your
convenience. Failure to comply with the unsubscribe policy will result

in immediate termination of your subscription so please follow the above

directions closely

[Chevelle-List] Rebuild or not

2002-09-12 Thread Jeff Fischer

I have set this spring as the time I would have the 454 in my Chevelle
(purchased 12/01) rebuilt. The car's odometer shows 88k. The car's lifters
are noisy as hell and it just doesn't seem as strong as a 454 should be. In
the meantime I had contact from the previous owners father and he seems to
remember that the car was rebuilt within the last 10k but the car sat for a
number of years after the rebuild. He was vague at best so I asked a local
mechanic if he could ascertain if the rebuild was actually done and this is
what he proposes to do to make that determination:

1. Compression Check - Find out what the factory spec is from compression.
Run a compression check and your engine should not be more that about 5
percent from that spec.

2. Leak Down Test - This will help to determine wear in the valve train,
ie., worn valve guides, valve stems, seats, etc.

3. Remove the Valve Covers - An engine that has been properly rebuilt with
10k miles on it should have almost no varnish on the heads, rockers, valves,
and springs.

4. Check Main Bearings - Remove the oil pan and remove one or two the main
caps and inspect the bearings. With 10k miles on the engine there should
almost no noticeable wear other then some of the coating wearing off. If
there is a lot of copper showing, deep grooves, or burn marks the engine is
wearing.

He then tells me that it is a two person job and they both get $50 per hour
and it should take 6 hours. My questions are this:

1. Should all the tests/things the mechanics recommend be done? Are they
all necessary? Is there a better way to determine?
2. Is 6 hours, two guys and $600 reasonable?

Thanks for your help guys,

I did this setup using Cragar SS rims with larger rims/tires on the rear

Tires are Kelly Chargers, front - P215/70R15

[Chevelle-List] 1st experience w/engine rebuild

2002-07-27 Thread Jeff Fischer

I intend to have my 454 rebuilt this coming winter/spring season and have
never done this before. This will be the motors first rebuild that I know
of and I have a couple questions.

When redoing the cylinders, is it always bored over?
Is this the norm?
If so, how much should I expect or consider going over?
Will this diminish the value of this completely stock motor?
If you were having your motor rebuilt, what things would you make sure were
done and please if possible, feel free to get detailed in the
parts/procedure descriptions.
Any precautions you might take to make sure you get back the same 454 with
all the same parts. (less the ones that will be replaced of course) Maybe I
am paranoid but it seems to me these motors are very valuable and thus a
target for a switch of parts? true?

Thanks for any help and I apologize for my lack of knowledge.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Insurance woes

2002-07-09 Thread Jeff Fischer

This policy of dropping you after an accident is terrible. They don't bump
your rates or put you on a probation, just drop you cold. My wife never had
an accident period. No tickets. She hit another car and her car was
repairable. We were dropped immediately (Heritage Ins.) and had to scramble
to find someone to cover us again. We did but at a higher rate of
course! Took many years to get back to that lower rate again. So now we
don't drive, just keep the cars locked up in the garage and go out and
stare at them occasionally. *grin*

Re: [Chevelle-List] Worked up the nerve

2002-06-13 Thread Jeff Fischer

I did all the rings around the gauges and the lettering for "Wiper/Washer"
and "Lighter" I used the Testors Paint Marker and you press the felt tip
down to allow paint to flow down over and through the felt. I used a piece
of card board as a blotter to control just how much paint I wanted on the
tip and the paint flowed and covered excellent in one coat. For the
lettering, I just slid the tip of the marker gently over the tops of the
letters and it painted them without painting between the letters. I had
rags and Q-tips ready for the anticipated screw-ups but didn't need them.
Either I was very lucky or this was easy. :)

P.S., this was done with the dash on the car.

[Chevelle-List] Don't tell me the #$% window has to come out!

2002-05-21 Thread Jeff Fischer

Took off the door panels today. (had new and fun experience with those
window cranks!) and I want to replace the weather stripping that is on the
outside between the window and the door but the window is preventing me
from getting to three screws. The window has to come out right? I have
never done this before so if in fact the window has to come out, should I
attempt this or have it done somewhere? And I thought this was gonna be
one of the easier projects with the car.

Thanks guys!

RE: [Chevelle-List] X pipes

2002-05-21 Thread Jeff Fischer

Mark,

I went with the 40 series, Delta flows. (2.5" pipes, Flowtech headers) The
mufflers are not loud in the car at all, I was expecting more noise but
outside the car they sound great at idle and super under acceleration. I
like them but judging from what I hear on the streets around here, I think
many people want louder mufflers. The mufflers do not drive me crazy (from
inside the car) like the Thrush mufflers I had on my Roadrunner as a
kid. :) Did you listen to the samples of the various mufflers at
Flowmasters website? These will only be as good as your sound card but you
can make some comparisons. If you ever get in my neck of the woods and want
to hear them before you make your purchase, let me know.

[Chevelle-List] Heater core?

2002-05-01 Thread Jeff Fischer

Last few times I drove the Chevelle, I have been noticing the odor of
anti-freeze and when I throw on the heater, the windshield gets fogged.
This is a faulty heater core correct? That is what I am thinking but I
read in the archive's where someone was talking about "sealing the heater
box"? I am not famaliar with this and thought I had better ask before
heading out to the local radiator shop.

I just installed the Edelbrock #1901 about two weeks ago as I was having
all kinds of troubles with the old Rochester. All problems cured when the
1901 was installed, the install was flawless and quick. All linkages, etc
are exact. Included are new gasket, threaded rod and wing nut to secure air
cleaner lid, caps to plug vacuum ports you may not use, stud to connect
accelerator cable and instructions. Very happy with the Edelbrock carb.

Today since it will hit an unseasonal 80° here in MN, I decided to look for

The Hooker Comp Part# 2455 fits very will on my '69 with BBC and
manual transmission.  I'm very pleased,  I didn't have to
modify them to fit, and nothing hits.  I have a used set for sale,
although I may have just sold them.

I got new ones from Jet-Hot, using the Team Chevelle discount.
$330 shipped to my door, coated.   Ask for Chris if you call
them directly.

I almost tried the Dynomax from AutoZone.  They're much cheaper,
but I already had the Hookers on order before I learned of this.

good luck,

[Chevelle-List] Tips on intake manifold gasket

I have decided to put on a new Edelbrock carb on my poorly running '71 454.
This is the car that as it turned out had a carb on it that was shown to be
for a 1972 chevy 350 pickup! Anyway, I want to replace the intake manifold
gasket at the same time but have never done so. I have the service manual
and it shows the torque sequence and the torque at 30 ft pounds. Any tips

[Chevelle-List] Still having troubles with suspect carb

2002-03-29 Thread Jeff Fischer

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

I had the Rochester Quadrajet carb rebuilt on my 71 Chevelle and only
discovered afterwards that it is not the correct carb but rather from the
numbers (#7042210QE 0872) on the carb, it is from a 1972 350 motor. I am
experiencing a bogging or hesitation as soon as you depress the
accelerator. I tried to adjust the two needle valves that are on either
side, front of the carb but the left screw does not effect the engine at
all? No matter if you screw it all the way in or out. The right screw will
kill the motor when screwed in. I called the carb shop and he says that the
screws will only effect the car at idle and not under power regarding the
hesitation issue. He further blames my troubles on a vacuum leak. Another
source tells me that anytime you can screw in one of these screws and it
does not effect the motor there is a problem inside the carb and the carb
shop needs to take responsibility? Is this true? I don't know which way to
turn on this. The timing and dwell have been set right on specs but the
hesitation problem is still there, also after running the car on the
highway and you get off and say are at a stop light, the engine is running
very rough and the car is slightly shaking unlike the way the engine ran
before the high speed trip. The car's exhaust is broken (sounds like a
truck) where the driver side exhaust manifold attaches to the exhaust pipes
and is at the muffler joint now getting new headers, pipes and flowmasters.
Am hoping the new exhaust will help cure some of the problems.

Any thoughts guys?

The fuel gauge on my 71 is not working correctly. It seems to fluctuate

[Chevelle-List] Seat belts

The female part (buckle) of the seat belts are missing from my '71 and so
are the mounting bolts. Can anyone tell me where these bolt holes are
located? Anyone know of a picture of what the correct buckle for my car
looks like? Is the lap buckle the same as the shoulder harness buckle?

Been to a few web sites and you sure can spend a bundle on these
belts! (ssnake-oyl.com & krebsclassic.com)

I'm quite happy with the Flowmaster American Thunder kit I used in my
67 SS.  I think they came with a 30 series muffler but it's
different than the standalone 30 series I believe.  Had to be for
the difference in price.  The kit was $290 w/mufflers (2.5")
compared to the pipe kit at $199...making the mufflers $100 for the
pair.  Designed for header equipped cars, they came complete with
all pipes and hangars from the headers back.  Not too loud on the
highway and no "drone" at speed.  Part

Re: [Chevelle-List] Alternator/generator test

Did all the tests you mentioned and discovered that instead of a plastic
connector that houses the two wires that plug into the back of the
alternator, the connector islong gone and just the two wires are there and
slip on individually. One of these wires was not connected. The minute I
connected this wire, voltage (running) went from 12.20 to 13.9 to 14.9. I
also pulled off the positive battery lead and car stayed running and turned
all accessories and still kept running. The dome light was flickering in
rhythm to the movements of the wipers. Something is fried on the wipers
too, on the low speed they crawl across the windshield very slow and on
high speed they come up the windshield a couple inches and just sit there.
Also the washer squirters are missing!*Jeff adds them to "the list" * :)

http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/unkport.jpg Also I noticed a small
pigtail clip just hanging in the air that is coming from a small condenser
looking thing mounted to the back of the coil, here is a pic of it, hope
you can see it. http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/pigtail.jpg

This pic shows the lower or closest port running off to the distributor and
on the front the plugged up port
http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/vacport1.jpg
Where should this go? Amazing the car runs with all this stuff
disconnected or mickey moused!

In the service manual I can only find them torqueing down a different
looking carb where they say to tighten all bolts first to 36 in. lbs. then
finish tightening to 144 in. Lbs. Does this sound correct?

Since the temps here in Minnesota have risen to almost 50° and I can't
snowmobile, thought I would play a little with the Chevelle. Took the
Q-Jet off and took in to have cleaned and rebuilt and noticed that the rod
that goes from the choke coiled spring on the manifold to the carb was off
and laying on top of the engine. Looked in the Service manual and can't see
a clear picture of where exactly this rod attaches to the side of the carb.
There are two possibilities. I have posted pictures of the choke here

http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/carb1.jpg

http://people.mn.mediaone.net/addss/carb2.jpg

Also the pictures of this coiled choke spring look different in the book
and I am wondering if I have the stock choke coil and carb? In the
pictures you will see that I hung the top of the rod in the closest hole
but there is another hole just to the right. Which one? Also would
appreciate steps for setting/adjusting the choke so I can get it right when
the carb comes back in a few days.

Thanks much for the help.

Rented Fast & the Furious over the past weekend. We had seen it in the

the rented movies we have had lately tell you to watch after the movie for
out takes etc. F&F did not say this but I forwarded through all the credits
anyway and there was a short scene where they show one of the movies star's
(Dom) rocketing along a beach in Mexico and he is driving a quite nice
CHEVELLE.An excellent choice if I say so myself! *smile*

[Chevelle-List] Can't get personalized plate I want

2002-01-11 Thread Jeff Fischer

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

In December I registered my '71 Chevelle and bought personalized
plates. (SS 454) At that time they looked up the SS 454 in their computer
to see if it is available and it was so I gave them the $107. Actually gave
them much more than that because in Minnesota they force you to first buy a
regular license plate before you can buy the personalized plate. Yesterday
I received a letter from the motor vehicles dept of MN telling me that my
personalized plate application is rejected due to the SS 454 being issued
already on a standard, regular plate and my $107 will be refunded in 4-8
weeks. If I want to reapply, I must go back to the motor vehicle testing
station and start all over. I called them again this morning and asked if
there is a way to check for the plates I want and guaranty that I have it
locked in so I do not have to go through this all over again in 30 days and
of course there is not. The day you pay your fee and apply for the plate in
no way locks you in. When your application gets to and is processed at the
main office in 4-8 weeks, if someone else has applied for that plate and
there paperwork gets there first, your screwed. What a policy! The woman
on the phone then wanted to go through some ideas I have for the
personalized plate and I mostly want combinations of the 71 SS 454 and as
soon as I said that she told me that they will most likely reject any
combinations of letters and numbers because of the possibility they could
or can be issued on a standard license plate. Of course through all my
dealings with these unique people that work at the motor vehicle dept, you
get the attitude of "I could care less that you are having this problem and
have many calls to handle so hurry up" I guess I will have to come up with
another idea for a personalized plate if I still want it.

This was like a skit on Saturday Night Live, "thank you for your check, yes
that personalized plate is available but will probably be rejected in 4-8
weeks and you may never be able to get a plate that you want*
Muhahahaha :)

[Chevelle-List] Getting ready to order interior kit

2002-01-10 Thread Jeff Fischer

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

I am about ready to order the entire interior kit for my Chevelle along
with all the weather stripping. Anyone have any tips they can pass along on
these repairs? The weather stripping that is along the chrome strip that
divides the front window from the rear window looks a little intimidating.

Also went looking at tires and wheels today and the local tire shop
recommends a 60's series on the rear and a 70's on the front and showed me
two tires, a Kelly Charger and Goodrich TA radial tire. What tires have
you used that have measured up to your expectations for how they look and
perform?

Thanks,

[Chevelle-List] Air shocks

2002-01-07 Thread Jeff Fischer

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

I recently bought my '71 Chevelle and even though it sits tucked away in
the garage for the Minnesota winter I am always thinking about it. In fact
yesterday a friend brought over what he said was "all we need to time the
car" but all he brought was a timing light. We set the timing but I still
have a problem where the car turns over slowly when hot. I then read in the
service manual that you can set the dwell without a meter by turning in the
dwell until the car bogs then opening a half turn so we did that and of
course rechecked the timing and it was at 0, so reset that back to 8° and
the motor seemed to sound better but still does the slow starting. Any
ideas on what is causing this?

On the rear the car has air shocks and I want to take them off. What would
be the best replacement system for the rear? With hardly any air in the
shocks the car "wheel- hops" all over the place with even minimal
acceleration. Sorry for these newbie questions but I haven't worked on
these cars since I was a teenager and although it is coming back to me
slowly I feel the need to clear my thoughts with you guys until I build
more confidence.

Thanks in advance for the help.

They did take pictures of the car. They did say that I could and recommended that I get a private appraisal on the car. She gave me the name of a man who works for a company which appraises car. The insurance company will honor the appraisal value stated by this company. I called the man and he stated that it cost 125.00 dollar for the appraisal. They record all the numbers from the block, head, transmission, rear end etc. They go completely throughout the inside and out and spend about 1 1/2 hour looking at the car. He stated that three certificate will be issued on the appraisal. What do you think about this process or should I look at another way to insure my car.?

is also insured with them. They told me that they could not put a
declared value on a 1971 car. I would only get the blue book value for
the car. They did take pictures of the car. They did say that I could and
recommended that I get a private appraisal on the car. She gave me the
name of a man who works for a company which appraises car. The insurance
company will honor the appraisal value stated by this company. I called
the man and he stated that it cost 125.00 dollar for the appraisal. They
record all the numbers from the block, head, transmission, rear end etc.
They go completely throughout the inside and out and spend about 1 1/2
hour looking at the car. He stated that three certificate will be issued
on the appraisal. What do you think about this process or should I look
at another way to insure my car.?

Nice here in MN, you can check to see if a name has been taken form the
motor vehicles web site. Makes it easy to decide and then run down there
and buy the tag.

[Chevelle-List] Service manuals

Ok, now that I have this '71 Chevelle, I have to get busy and begin the
resto. For some reason, it doesn't seem to be restoring itself out in the
garage. :-)
What manuals will I need to show me how to restore and repair this car?
Haven't worked on these cars in years.

Is there a book titled, "How to Restore Chevelles for Dummies?" *grin*

Thanks again,

[Chevelle-List] Flasher location

2001-12-04 Thread Jeff Fischer

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

My '71 Chevelle was delivered to me last night and it is in rough shape.
New plugs, wires, points, etc really got it running better. So much to do
and winter is about here, I am lucky I was able to get a ride before the
snow and it goes to the garage. Can anyone help me as to the exact location
of the turn indicator flasher unit? I see what I believe it the emergency
flasher (round, shiny gold) unit right on the fuse box but I can't see the
other flashed. I can hear it but can't put my eyes right on it. Does it
look the same as the emergency flasher?

Thanks for your help,

Re: [Chevelle-List] non-oxygenated fuel or not?

2001-11-26 Thread Jeff Fischer

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Just received an email from the previous owner stating to use 92 octane
unleaded pump gas with an octane booster for each tank full of gas. The
non-oxygenated gas I mentioned is 92 octane and is at several stations near
me and they all have these signs stating to use for collector and classic
cars only. Does anyone else have this stuff near them and use it? Should
I follow the previous owners advice and use the octane booster in each tank
full?

Thanks,

[Chevelle-List] non-oxygenated fuel or not?

2001-11-25 Thread Jeff Fischer

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Hi,

I am new to the list and owning a Chevelle. I will take delivery of my 1971
Chevelle SS 454 sometime in the next 2 weeks and was wondering what gas I
should use. Many pumps around me have "non-oxygenated" fuel and the signs
say for collector cars, boats, etc. Is the fuel I want to use?

Thanks for any suggestions.
