Re: [Chevelle-List] trannie goes

2003-07-11 Thread KARM40
I decided to go with a rebuilt turbo 350. Turns out that someone had painted the
trannie, so the guy at the shop didn't think it was original. And since there is a
crate motor, I wasn't married to rebuilding it.

[Chevelle-List] trannie goes

2003-07-09 Thread KARM40
I have a 71 SS convert that has a crate motor. The trannie (T350) is going. Should I
rebuild it or get something new? It is a real SS if that matters, the only thing that
isn't original is the motor. What should I do? And, anybody know someone good to go
to in Los Angeles?

Thanks to all!!!
Got the ignition fixed. Now I need a passenger side mirror. One of the
bullet/teardrop ones. Anywhere?

Is this the fun part, or is the pursuit better? I keep looking to see if the car is
still there. I'm looking into Lojack or something similar. Any experiences with
Lojack or similar items? Should I get a Club, or does that just deter the amateurs.

Well, we are off to Bob's Bigboy to get a burger and see what else is out there.

[Chevelle-List] Hooray!!! New SS

2003-06-26 Thread KARM40
I just got home from Phoenix where I purchased a 1971 SS Convertible. It's a 350 with
factory air, power windows, seat, locks and electric trunk release. It has a crate
motor and all the numbers for paint, etc. check out.
Finally after 2 years of looking everyday and 15 years of kicking myself, there it
sits in my driveway.
So, everything couldn't go perfect, I went to start it up this morning and it sounded
weird, plug wire was off. I asked my son to shut the car off. Replaced the wire, and
then when I went to start it, the key just spun. No ignition. Guess I will have to
hotwire it.
But, it still looks good!!!

Re: [Chevelle-List] digital cameras

2003-04-01 Thread KARM40
Actually, the cameras all differ in response time. Typically, the more you pay, the
faster the response time is.
Depressing the shutter release halfway is the only way to hasten the lag time. It
works, but takes practice. Fortunately you don't have to waste film figuring it out.

And you don't have to spend 4K. Canon just came out with a 6+ megapixel camera that is
1500 dollars. It's the Canon 10D.

I just got mine and it's great. Of course I can justify it since I am a photographer.

Believe me, I know what you mean, but just try and find one. The 71-72 small block
convertibles are just not out there. (I used to have a 71) The few that are on line

difficult.
I've been seriously looking for over 2 years.
So, any help is appreciated.

So, it turns out that the car according to the data plate, originally had a bench

And if there are plenty of cars for $16K, where are they?

[Chevelle-List] Purchase help

2003-01-28 Thread KARM40
As some of you may know, I have been looking for a 1971 SS convertible for a couple
years now. Today I had one checked out by a mechanic. It looks like a real one, but
doesn't have a remote mirror. The engine is not original. It needs a new top and
interior should be done too. There is probably $1500 of mechanical work that needs to
be done. (new brakes, gaskets everywhere, hoses, etc.)
There is a little rust in the rear quarters and some bolts are missing for the fronts.
 I could go on.

Here is the dilema, they are asking 16,500 for it. The $1500 for mechanical and
probably $2500 to do the interior and the top, gives me a good driver, that probably
is a clone. It has correct dash, etc. but the heavy front sway bar is missing and
there isn't a rear one.
BUT, it has power bucket seats, factory air (working), power windows and a remote
trunk release.
It doesn't seem like it would be worth it to strip it to metal and paint it.

So, doesn't $16,500 seem too high. And even if it was $14,000, would it be worth
getting?

THANKS!

Re: Re:[Chevelle-List] Advice needed

2002-06-26 Thread KARM40

OK, so yesterday, I drove the black Chevelle. I guess because of the 350
replacing the 454, it seems the front end is sitting high up in the air.
Also, the steering feels pretty loose. The engine compartment is a mess and
the car was sputtering and missing. No smoke though coming out of the
exhaust. The current owner is looking for the build sheet.
He says that if he finds it and it indicates an LS5, that you could buy an
LS5 and have it stamped to match the numbers. And, he says that this is
totally legal. Is this true? Seems at a minimum, unethical.
It was kind of funny because he claimed it had a cowl induction hood. He was
going to order cowl induction emblems to put on the hood. Only problem is
that...no cowl induction, just a regular SS hood.
So, looks like I have to pass on it.
Whaddya think?

So, I am looking at 2 cars. One is a 71 SS convert. 350 with air.  The other is a 454, no air.  How hard is it to add air to a car?  Does it lessen the value, since it wouldn't be original?  I think that I would paint the 350, not crazy about the color.  Am I really screwing up not getting the 454?  I had a 350 before and it was plenty quick, but I always wanted it to be quicker, but I also have a 14 year old who will be wanting to drive it and I'm wondering about a new driver with all that power.  All thought would be appreciated!

I'll join in here. I've been looking for a 71 SS Convertible 350 auto with
air, and there aren't a lot to choose from especially if you are particular
about color and engine. I've been looking for a long time. I'll see an ad
and call and it will be a dealer or a broker and I'll ask if it's a clone and
they of course say no. Just by asking a few questions, I can get a feel if
it is or not. So, if you see one out there, let me know.
Another good place to look is:
http://www.collectorcartraderonline.com/adsearch.html
You can check Hemmings too, but I find that people tend to ask a lot for
there cars there.

Kevin, I have abandoned that car, cuz I really want to get a "REAL" ss, and after talking to the guy, I'm pretty sure that it is a clone.  He thinks it is too, and he has the car!
Thanks,

one then.

Larry, it's a 350. The problem is that the car is on the East coast and I
am on the West. He is saying that it is a clone, but he isn't sure. He said
it could be real, but he doesn't want to represent it as one. I'm stuck on
getting a real one, but then after what I read on the site, I may have had a
clone. The weird thing, I got my car in 1973. It was a 71 SS convertible
with a 350. I can't imagine that anyone would have gone to the trouble to
make a clone back then.
Still looking,

So, I'm still looking at this 71 SS. So, is it true that I can't tell if
it's a legit SS without a build sheet??? All I have is the VIN.
Thanks,

OK, so that's what I am trying to figure out, if it's an SS or a clone. Are
there any other clues?
Thanks again,

I have a VIN number on a car I am interested in buying. What do I do with
it? I'm trying to figure out if it is a legit SS or a clone. Will the VIN
tell me that?
Thanks!

[Chevelle-List] 454 Matching numbers ?

2001-09-24 Thread KARM40
So, in my search for a 71-72 Chevelle SS convertible, I called about a car listed and it was on consignment at a dealer.  I asked the usual questions and when it came to whether the numbers matched, he said that there is no such thing as a matching numbers 454 car.  He said that the heads were defective on all the 454's and that all the engines were replaced.  I've never heard this before, and as it sounded a little fishy to me, I thought I would ask the experts here on the list.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: [Chevelle-List] BRAND NEW CHEVY PRODUCTS

2001-08-07 Thread KARM40
So, before I go out and get my Chevy shoes, I need to get a Chevy CAR!  I
just busted in telling you guys that I am looking for a 71 Chevelle SS
convertible.  This is a car I had from 1973 to 1987.  I paid $2200 for it and
it had 52,000 miles on it.  The guy I bought it from used it to tow his race
car around.  I basically did the mechanical maintenance on it but really
neglected the appearance.  For the 14 years I had it, I put on 200,000 miles
on it and never did anything to the engine (350).  The top was ripped and the
back seats too and the stuffing would fly all over the place.  In 1987 I sold
the car for $2200, what I paid for it and that was a huge mistake. So, that's
why I'm looking for another.  Any help would be appreciated (sources, etc.)

Thanks,
Mark
