[Chevelle-List] [non-kinda] need daily driver...

Title: [non-kinda] need daily driver...

The wife and I are moving to Cincinnati OH. on the 15th of next month.  We're going to need a second car.  I've kept and eye on ebay and autotrader.  I was wondering if anyone had a line on a solid chevy anywhere the mid-west? I'd like to get a chevelle, but any solid daily driver will do.  Looking to spend about $4k.

Thanks,

Yes... your symptoms sound like a fuel/carb problem. Why it's intermediate, that's
something you'll have to find out.

KenD's suggestion for a fuel filter problem is a good place to start. I'd check the
floats and the needles in the carb too. A vacuum leak would cause it to bog.

When was the last time it was tuned?

This was on my home page as one of the ugliest cars ever made. I can sure think of a
whole hell of a lot more before even considering the El Camino. Just thought I would
share this with the list. By the way the home page is from CompuServe

Chevy El Camino
The fusion of a passenger car with a pick-up, this early attempt at a dual-purpose
vehicle similar in concept to today's Chevy Avalanche was also sold as the GMC
Caballero and, when equipped with AstroTurf in the bed, is among the best collegiate
party-wagons ever made. It was potentially fast, too, with V-8 power typically
standard. Add air shocks, glasspack mufflers, and "Yosemite Sam" decals, and you have
the ultimate redneck station wagon.

2002-07-12 Thread Morris, Jason

As I'm sure you all know, El Caminos and Chevelles were sisters at one time. When I
bought my last car I really wanted a late 60 Chevelle, but my life required a truck.
And you know what, I'd rather have half of a Chevelle then a full truck any day. So a
bought myself a 1969 El Camino, the dash said it was a Chevelle and when I drove it
the only thing I could see in front of me was a Chevelle. I was happy.

Well I'm hardly a fan of El Camino's, but they do have quite a following and some
people love them. Out of all the El Camino's I like the one pictured best. But
different strokes for different folks. I think built Vega's are cool... alot of people
don't agree. Overall... I think Minivans and Ford fwd cars are the ugliest stuff
around... yuck! and there has to be at least a dozen or two more before I could even
think of somethink classic that was ugly.

RE: Re: [Chevelle-List] NEWSFLASH - the cost of your resto probably j ust went up

2002-05-31 Thread Morris, Jason

Number one: Thanks for sending the original message, to let us know what's going on.

My opinion is: (per request)

If this really happiness GM will put a lot of companies out of business. And just
like Darwin said, "only the strong will survive." When the number of parts companies
decrease, competition will no longer be a problem for the "GM certified" dealers.
Who's to stop them from raising they prices (beyond a reasonable amount)?

Saying that GM deserves a cut, from a car they R&D'd 30 years ago is insane. GM
recouped their cost the moment that car was sold. Like I said before, if they want to
hold patents on parts, I don't have a problem with that. But patents have a cut off
time, once the innovation becomes common place, it belongs to everyone. This way
future generations can learn and grow from previous technologies.

Lets follow GM's thinking, and take it back even further. I hate to say it but F*RD
Motor company started the automotive industry. Can you imagine GM paying F*RD a cut
for every car they sell? That's just crazy! I know that's taking a little to far,
but my point stands.

I guess you could say I hate big business. I also hate companies that ONLY look at
the bottom line. Take a look at the movie "Roger & Me", that's what will happen when
companies do business by the "bottom line".

John, I know that you're in the parts business. I'm sure your know more about this
subject then me. I'm just testing out my new keyboard. :)

I'm sorry but GM is full of SH!T...

I'll give them their emblems and anything else that is a trademark.  But sheet metal, moldings, lenses, etc...?(to quote "60 minutes"...  GIVE ME A BREAK!)

That's like saying, the guy that invented tube socks is entitled to profits.  Come on, even the patent office has limits on how long you can call something propitiatory.

This is a perfect example of corporate America.  "Are your companies profits a little low this year?  Well, why not try and get your grubby hands into the little guys profits!  After all you do have more lawyers then them."

GM stopped making these parts many years ago...  The restoration market would not be as big, if it wasn't for individuals picking up where GM left off.  Now that the market is so big GM wants to jump back in.

Competition equals better business, if GM eliminates the little guy.  I predict that your average Joe, will not be able to afford a project car.

BTW...  Micheal Moore is my hero.

Newsflash - the cost of your resto probably just went up
(by John Nasta)

I was talking this morning with one of the major manufacturers of
reproduction sheet metal, emblems, moldings, and lenses. Apparently they are
not able to ship a major portion of my last order because they received a
"cease and desist" order from GM. It seems that The General is putting the
clamp on the manufacture and distribution of all unlicensed GM reproduction
parts. Manufacturers are allegedly being given a few choices:

1) Form a "strategic partnership" (of sorts) with GM, which involves buying
into a licensing program. It also allows GM to inspect and approve your
manufacturing *and* allows them to audit your books. The premise is that
every restoration part essentially becomes an Authorized GM Restoration
Part. The good news is that this hopefully will mean better quality control.
The bad news (for us) is that GM gets a cut from every part sold (which is
why they reserve the right to audit), and of course these commissions and
audits all add up to increased production costs, which will undoubtedly
trickle down to the consumer level.

I certainly can't blame GM. They have designed innovative and unique
products, at great expense and effort, consistently over a long period of
time. That's a lot of work and intellectual property, and businesses like
this are not easy to build. I believe they have a right to claim ownership
of their designs, and to monitor the integrity of reproduction parts.

Which parts are effected? Anything that is uniquely GM, especially scripts
and emblems, and sheet metal parts. However, the full impact is not yet
realized. I'm sure you will still be able to buy generic items like
hardware, parts that were never made by GM in the first place, and parts
that are already Authorized GM Restoration Parts. It certainly seems that
the major manufacturers will certainly buy into the license agreement rather
than lose their business. This particular manufacturer told me that they
expected to have their deal wrapped up within a month.

Lest we forget, I did mention that the manufacturers & dealers have a few
choices...

2) If you have lots of time & money, and feel that you have sufficient
cause, I suppose you could try to sue GM, but of course they would be suing
you too at that point.

3) You could close your business. This may sound sarcastic, but I would
imagine that some businesses will not want or be able to work with GM, and
they will not legally be able to do business, at least in the U.S.

So, in closing, it seems that GM is extending their market reach, and
learning to make profits from their classic designs. Carroll Shelby is doing
something unique yet similar. He has re-released the Shelby Cobra. The
frame, suspension, sheet metal, detailing, etc. are made to exact original
specifications. In a recent TV interview, he said something to the effect
that he saw other people making a huge profit selling imitations of his
vehicle, and had to ask himself why he was the only person not making money
from it (sic). Will GM eventually go so far as to release a brand new
"classic" Hurst/Olds or Z16 Chevelle? I seriously doubt it. But I think you
can count on the idea that restoration parts prices will probably see a
general increase in price in the near future, and we can only hope that the
quality assurance level will rise concurrently.

It seems that the next shoe will more than likely fall on the late-model
aftermarket parts industry (if it hasn't already).

Well, that's it from the news desk. And now, back to your regular
programm

If you like cutting your hands open installing a fan and running with higher

Otherwise a clutch fan will give you a cooler engine and it's not as harsh on your

Well guys,
I just got back from the Peach State Chevelle Show in Georgia. Unfortunately
it rained Friday & Sat & was misting Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon turned
out to be beautiful though. A lot of the cars either didn't show or went
home Sat because of the weather but those that remained on Sunday were
great! I believe a good time was had by all. I got to meet Dan Dolin, the
president of the Peach State Club, & several other very nice people.
Dan has a very natural sense of humor! He took time to talk with me & look
through my car pics even though he was very busy. I appreciated that as well
as the hard work that went on behind the scenes to make this event happen.
There were some great chevelles & elkys there!
I have some pics as soon as I get them developed if anyone would like to see
them.
Later,

[Chevelle-List] One call...

2002-05-02 Thread Morris, Jason
Title: One call...

As I said before, my wife and I are moving to Ohio and after months of work on my house, I finally put the house on the market this week.  It's not the move that's killing me it's all the prep work that has to be done before I can move.

I'd like to lower my stress level a notch, so I put my '69 Elky in the local classifieds, with a low price ($1900 obo) thinking that I could get out from under it quick.  I've only received one call and it's starting to worry me.  Is this Elky such a big project that no one is willing to take it on.

It sucks trying to find a buyer in such a limited amount of time.

The good news is that I've found a crap-load of classic chevys (including a '71 elky ss) for sale in the mid-west.  I think I even convinced my wife to sell her 2000 honda civic and get a 60's corvair. (any corvair fans out there??.. I'd like to ask you some questions)

So far everything has fell into place... I just hope that trend continues!

Jason,
Great that this topic came up. I just bought last Sat. my new 67 Elky to go with my 67 SS. Since the Elky will be my daily driver I have been looking at my options for A/C.  I talked to a few shops here and they quoted me $1000 PLUS $500-$800 to install a Sure-Fit Vintage Air Unit. I was planning to install it myself, ($800 would buy a KILLER sound system) but I'm working a ton of overtime now and can afford to farm it out. I plan on using repro dash vents and controls, so on the inside it will look stock. Other than the price, I like the idea. I asked about the old, "hang on" type self contained units and was quoted around $1200 installed, so the Vintage kit is a no brainer.  I may get it in about 2 weeks.  I will let you know how it goes. Tell us what you end up doing. Good Luck

I had that same idea.  I even found a 1969 El Camino(w/factory air) that was being parted out.  I pulled all the A/C components and paid the old man $20 for all the parts (even got an a/c dash bezel out of it. w/gauges!).  Well long story short, after talking to a few people about my plans I discovered it would be a major headache to convert.  So now I've got a pile of parts in the garage and I'm out $20.  It looks like I'll be giving the parts away to whom ever buys my Elky.

Good luck,

Well guys I hate to say it but I have to let my '69 El Camino go.  I've been struggling with this decision for the last 3 months.  Rochelle and I are planning move to Ohio soon and I was hoping to have it shipped up there so I could continue my project.  Well to make a long story short, some unexpected bills came up and we can't afford to move unless we sell my beloved project.(damn it!)

I was hoping you guys could tell me what this thing is worth, is $2200 to much or not enough. I've got an update on my website explaining the Elky ( www.angelfire.com/retro/project-69).  Also if anyone could spread the word I would appreciate it.  I'll be putting an ad in the local paper next week if I need to.

Any machine shop should be able to do this work for you.  I got all mine done for $8 a bushing.  That included removing the old and pressing in the new.

I would not recommend putting the bushings in yourself, unless you have a press.  If it's done wrong you could bend your control arms.

As I

Start with a few small projects before you dive right into a frame off restoration.  You'll just get frustrated and quit if you bite off more then you can chew.  To quote the movie, -What about Bob- "take baby steps."

This list is a good start.

Get some pictures for the group, so we can see what your dealing with.

Good Luck,

RE: [Chevelle-List] Refurbishing Wiring Harness (Rant)

2002-03-09 Thread Morris, Jason
Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] Refurbishing Wiring Harness (Rant)

Compared to a lot of people on this list I don't consider myself an expert in classic car department.  Most of the time I feel kind of silly asking a question that any expert classic car owner would know. But unfortunately I was not born in a time where I could go out and buy a new 69 chevelle.  My father was a preacher and had no interest in cars(like most people in my family).  As a result, the things I'm learning at 26, are the same things others have learned in their preteens.

When I saw my first 1967 chevelle, I fell in love with the chevelle line.  And shortly after that I bought my first classic car.  I am the first in my family that enjoys working on and driving these cars.  This list is my main source of information when it comes to my car.  So I'm sure some of the  "frustrating chatter" you speak about comes from me, and those like me.

Your frustration is my learning experience.  Unlike you, most of the discussion on this list is very helpful to me.

Like most of the discussion on this list, it is a total waste of bandwith in
"cyber sense", and it would be less frustrating listening to the constant
chatter of persons who have practically no knowledge of classic car
ownership.

When I see a classic car off the road and in possible
need of assistance I try to stop if it's at all possible
for me to do so, regardless of what kind of vehicle it
is.  As an enthusiast I know that others may have
different tastes and preferences when it comes to makes
and models, but it doesn't change the fact that we're
all interconnected by our choice of hobby and should
stick together and support each other.

2002-03-03 Thread Morris, Jason
Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] help with pics on angelfire

When I built my page I found the Angelfire program to be very picky about how you name the files.  upper and lower case letters matter. so make sure that your HTML file calls the pictures by the exact name.  I found it easier to rename the picture files after a uploaded them to angelfire.  For some reason the upload program may change the case or the extension of your file name. (i.e. changing case or adding a space at the end or beginning of your file name, delete this space it matters)

You can change your picture size with a simple HTML command.  But I just used photo shop to make the pictures the size I wanted.

I'll look at your site tonight a see if I can help more.

I always here people talking about all the body work that they've had done.   But I never here how much their wallet hurts once the job is complete.

A friend of mine wanted to get a front quarter panel refinished, off of his 68 chevelle and the body shop wanted $300 to refinish it. You could buy an after market panel for that price!

I'm just curious to know how much you thought you were going to spend and what it ended up being. (this is open to anyone on the list)

Hi Wayne,

The rot on the roof is actually a big problem. Ron wants me to put a vinyl
roof back on because of it. I really don't want a vinyl roof though. He said
he can fill it with "all metal" but the problem is that it can't be patched
from behind. There is no room to get in there. He said that roof is going to
require several coats of primer & sanding in between coats to get it nice
and smooth for paint. It's always a PITA to undo the vinyl roof process.

Ron also said that he thinks this car did not spend its whole life in the
south, because of the roof rot and how bad the left rear quarter was. I got
it for $200 so I wasn't expecting a lot. It looked like it could (and
should) be saved though.

Another exterior piece that will need to be welded in is the sill under the
rear window. I guess I am gonna replace those rear floor pans too. Then of
course the big thing is that this really is the best time to take it off the
frame... and I do already have the body bushings here...

I'm wondering how many people out there actually drive their chevelle in the winter (i.e. salt,snow,etc...).

I'm looking to buy a daily driver, I'd like to get a chevelle but I know I'll be driving it in the winter.

Is there any way you can protect a car from winter driving?

Or how about other recommendations for DD's,  I wouldn't mind letting the salt eat away at a F*rd.

Just to keep the list on topic I'd like to announce that I've finished my biggest project yet.  The suspension on my '69 El Camino now has new bushings, ball joints, tie rods, springs, and shocks, both front and rear.

It drives like a dream.  Now I just need to replace the body bushings and it will be solid!

I should have some project photos up on my site very soon.

I posted this earlier under the rocker panel moldings topic, but posts I
sent after that have shown up and this one has not. So, maybe it bounced.
Sorry if it appears twice.

I bought a front bumper off a guy because it was in excellent condition
(much better than my original) and the price was right. However, the new
bumper had different signal lights/lenses than my original one. Does this
mean that one of these is from an SS (or maybe a 68)? Can somebody tell me
what the difference is and which ones really belong on my 69?

I notice that most of the 69s I see have the smaller lights, and they are
amber. So, I'm curious to know why mine are clear, and what these bigger
(also clear) ones are.

I have posted a quick pic at http://oldcarnetwork.com/signals.jpg.

Never assume there are not any hidden flaws.  Take it from me, my car has tons of hidden flaws, some covered up by the PO and others just because of the cars age.

You should spend an hour or two looking over the car.  Hell, the frame could have been bent in an accident 10 years ago (maybe that's why he parked it, who knows).

Many people on this list will tell you:  Once you've estimated how much the restoration is going to cost, double it and that's what your going to spend.

I'm new to your list and to Chevelles (although I have always
admired them).  I don't know if this is an appropriate question for your
forum but here goes anyway.  I'm looking at a 1966 Chevelle SS with a 4
speed and the 396 motor.  I have not checked the VIN yet to ascertain
whether is genuine or not.  Let's assume it is  It's white and the paint
is shot.  The interior is red and has bucket seats.  All the emblems appear
to be present and the bumpers and body are straight.  It's been parked for
about 10 years but I know it supposedly ran well when it was parked (this I
know from an unbiased person, one not involved in the deal).  It's presently
sitting in a back yard with about a million spiders calling it home.  From
what I can tell it looks very complete.  My question is what do you folks
who seem to be very familiar with this subject think it would be worth
assuming there aren't any hidden flaws of a significant nature.

I am only a member of this list just like you but I do not believe it is this "lists" responsibility to solve your problems.  It's a list where friends and like minded people can get together and talk about what they love (i.e. Chevelles).

If no one on this list can answer your questions, no one will reply and you will have to find your answers somewhere else.  If you happen to find your answer, post it on this list so everyone can benefit from your search.

To assume that no one is responding to your post because you're not Tom, Larry, or Clint is insane.

This is a very good list with lots of info, so go with the flow and stop your b*tch'in.

Well, I live in Texas and $4500 wouldn't get me anything close

cars that wouldn't come close to what I have now as far as reliability and

If you've seen my web site, you'd see that the body and interior need a lot of work.  Also the engine would need to be replaced to make me happy... The 8k is not a lump sum that I have, that's how much I would have to spend over the next few years.

My

our new years resolution is to be in Columbus by the end of July.

The

If the bearing in the blower motor is going bad, it can cause the heater fuse to blow. This is not something you will find with a test light because it is not a dead short. The same thing happened on one of my Oldsmobiles. Replaced the fuse and it blew again right away, replaced the blower motor (which was noisy anyway) and the fuse has never blown again.

I'm looking to get the bushings on my front control arms replaced, I got a quote from a local machine shop at $8 a bushing.  That includes taking the old out and pushing the new in (I supply parts).  So I'd pay a total of $64 for the job.  Does this sound reasonable?

My father-inlaw told me that back in the day, you could buy a bushing puller/pusher tool for around $20.  I can't find any info on such a tool.

I just replaced the rear springs in my 69 El Camino.  The hardest part of the whole job was taking the tires off!  It was one of the easiest project's I've done so far...  I also replaced the shocks while I was down there (also easy).  I haven't done the control arms but it looked like there wouldn't be much to it.

You may want to think about pocketing the $250 and doing it yourself.

I  need to have the rear control arm bushings and rear springs
replaced on my 1966 ElCamino.

I have the springs and rubber bushings so labor will be the only
cost.

I have one estimate from a shop here in Phoenix, AZ.

4 hours  -  $250

How does this sound to anyone on the list who has had this type
work dome?

I'm also thinking of having the body mount bushings done.

Anybody have some input?

[Chevelle-List] new engine or rebuild the suspension

2001-11-09 Thread Morris, Jason
Title: new engine or rebuild the suspension

I am now able to start my first project on my '69 El Camino.  I have about $1500 to spend.  I have narrowed it down to either a new engine or rebuild the suspension.

The engine is a 307, at idle has a oil pressure of about 10-20 and at throttle has about 40-45.  It smokes at start up only when the engine is already hot.  7 of the pistons have a compression of about 145, with one at 130.  If I were to replace the motor first I would get the best 350 that $1500 can buy.

I was told that this engine was rebuilt 40k miles ago.  However almost everything the seller told me about this Elky was bull.

The suspension is crap. needs new everything, from springs to ball joints.  I can't drive it over 65 MPH (it starts to shake). I should have alittle left over for a new carb and maybe some headers for the 307 that's in it right now.

Keep in mind that I need this car for my daily driver.  I have temporary transportation while I do the work but I will need to drive this car (with either the old engine and new suspension OR new engine and old suspension) until I raise more funds.

I'm hoping you guys can give me some advise.  I know in a perfect world I would do them both at the same time, but it's not.

I've got plenty of pictures of my project on my site if you want to take a look.

Thanks for your help...

From what I understand the hoods from the 68 and the 69 are the same.  You just have to match the hinges to your model year.  I don't know if there is enough room to redrill new holes.  I would just have the hinges from your 69 rebuilt and use those.

The OPG catalog lists a 69-only SS hood for my El Camino and says with an
asterisk that it can also be used on 68 if 69 hinges are used. Does that
mean the 68 & 69 hoods are identical except for the location of the bolt
holes or something?

I'm also asking because I have an opportunity to buy a good used hood from a
parted 68 SS El Camino, and I don't want to buy it, ship it, and then find
out it doesn't fit. Would I need 68 hood hinges or could I just drill new
holes in my 1969 hinges?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
John Nasta

p.s. I also got a set of those long extension plates that you can sandwich
between the hood & the hinges to give the hood more support & prevent it
from kinking. Are these worth using or are they unnecessary and just going
to look like something that doesn't belong there?

Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] Two Barrel vs. Four Barrel carbs...

I'm not a racer... I like people to see what I have as I drive by and let their jealousy rise to an insurmountable anguish.

MPG is important to me.  But maybe I should explain my reasoning and let "The List" have the last word.

It all comes down to the fact that I don't trust the carb that's on there.  I'd much rather have something that I know is going to start up every time.  It's also acting like it needs a heat shield.  And from what I hear, they only make heat shields for 4 barrels.  I've replaced the battery and it's got a new fuel pump so I'm pretty sure it has to be the carb.  At any temp over 180 it has a hard time starting.  After severely pumping the gas it'll start but I get a big cloud of smoke coming out of the exhaust.

So I figure what the hell, just put a good 4 brrl on there (W/ a heat shield) and all my problems are solved... right?

Thanks again,

JM

what kind of driving to do you do? if your not on it all the time i would
think the 4 barrel what help your mph! because if you look at the barrels on
a 2 barrel carb there are 2 great big ones duppin fuel, and on the 4 barrel
there are the small primaries and then the secondaries. you would have to try
and stay out of the secondaries to make this work

any one else can correct me if im wrong

I'd stick with a 2-barrel,,especially on a stock 307..Granted a 4-barrel with
smaller primaries will not be as much,,"usually",,as a 2-barrels.I'd look
up the CFM numbers on your 2-barrel too before buying a 4-barrel,,,which I'm
not absolutely sure what the lowest CFM rating is out there regarding
4-barrels,,600 cfm comes to mind,,,but I'm not sure...I'd be suprised if the
307's carb flows more than 400 cfm,,guessing
Not too mention changing the intake manifold,,,possibly reconfiguring the
linkage,,automatic tranny??,,then the kickdown if connected,,,fuel
line,,breather,,etc.,,etc...

[Chevelle-List] Two Barrel vs. Four Barrel carbs...

2001-09-22 Thread Morris, Jason

I've
come to the conclusion that I need a new carburetor.  I'm wondering how far
south is my MPG going to go if I upgrade to a four barrel carb.  I'm
getting about 14mpg right now with a two barrel Q-jet, on a 307.
Also any other information (on the subject of changing/upgrading carbs) would be
great.

Thanks

Chances are it is just a bulb. My 69 chevelle had most of them burnt out so
I put all new in. In my car all the dash bulbs where on grey wires.

Might get my car safety next week so I can go for a rip and try out this
combination 5spd with hydraulic clutch!

[Chevelle-List] 69 Elky Questions....

2001-09-14 Thread Morris, Jason
Title: 69 Elky Questions

1.  Where in the hell can I find a bench seat for my 69 Elky in central texas.  (some moron put honda buckets in it!!!  HONDA BUCKETS?!?!?

2.  My gauge lights are out, I pulled the light and replaced the bulb.  It turns out I replaced the light for my emergency brake and oil idiot light (which didn't work before).  Do I have to take the dash apart to replace the speed and gas gauge lights?  How far up in the dash are these bulbs.   (BTW... it's not the fuss I checked.)

Thanks for any help

[Chevelle-List] Sand Blasting....

2001-08-31 Thread Morris, Jason
Title: Sand Blasting

By asking this question I hope I'm not turning this list into a "Restoration for dumbies" book.

My Elky is pretty solid but I've got surface rust in more places that I can count.  Should I just invest in a sand blaster and teach myself how to use it or  pay "X" amount of dollars to have it professionally done.

I know I want the final paint job to be done by the experts but can I save some cash by doing some of the prep work on my own?  Keep in mind that I've never even touched a sandblaster or a paint sprayer.  Although I'm pretty sure that I could figure it out rather quickly.

I've also got a 69 with the plastic dash.  It looks kinda crappy if you ask me.  I'd much rather have a full metal console.  Could you change out the whole thing (glove box/dash/gauges) with and older style out of a early 60's chevy?

Hey List,

The plastic dash piece (not sure what to call it)
on my 69 Chevelle SS396 is worn out.  I am referring
to the piece that houses the stereo, temperature
switches, wiper control, light knob, and the guages.
I was wondering if amyone out there knew of a company
that made custom metal or aluminum dashes for this
purpose.  I have called around looking for a repro.,
but no one seems to have it (i don't think they repro.
it yet).  The metal dash does not have to fit the
factory guages.  I want to put in my oun clusters.

Thanks,
T in SC

Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] Rear axle swap...

Thanks for the info Rick,
I don't know the damage yet but my mechanic told me that if the axle was pitted or grooved, I would need a new one.  I'll ask him about that axle saver, that could save some $.

BTW, this is going to be a daily driver, so the axle saver mite be good enough for me.

jason- There is a seal at the end of the axle tube that keeps the oil
inside.   Unless the axle shaft is boogered up, no need to replace it.
Just replace the seal.    Any 68-72 Chevelle, el camino or Monte Carlo
axle should work,  EXCEPT  I believe that there is a difference between
10 & 12 bolt rear axles.  Get the correct one.

Are you redoing the el camino as a daily driver or racer?    IF its only
gonna see a very mild motor, you can have him install  "Axle saver
bearings" .  The axle usually gets boogered at the bearing, the axle
saver moves the bearing race outboard a bit to a good axle surface.

Replacing the axle for this type problem is relatively common, someone
did create the axle saver for that problem.

Also is this a common problem or am I just the unlucky one.

Title: Got myself into a world of hurt...

Well I did it.  I went and bought my very first chevy.  It's a 69 El camino, and boy will my wallet be hurting by the time I'm done with the restoration.

You know the saying buyer beware.  Well I wasn't.  I'm sure the guy I bought it from believed he had fixed everything to working condition like he told me, but I have a feeling that his idea of fixing something is putting a Band-Aid on a gun shot wound.  (I should have known something was up when I saw "HONDA" seats in it!)

But anyway, after I got over the frustration of getting severely screwed on a $2500 car sale.  I'm looking forward to watching this once beautiful car getting back to show room condition.

I live in Austin, TX. and because this is my first time with a restro project I thought it would be a good idea to join an auto club.  Could anyone recommend a club around my area.

Thanks

now my next question... when looking for a good El Camino is there anything special I need to pay attention to..  I know how to look for a good car (rust spots, bondo, oil leaks, strange banging noise coming from the engine, etc...)  but anything else in 66-67 El Camino/ Chevelle's?

Thanks for all you help so far..

The guy that started this list is tall -- about 6' 5" and he drives a
'66 El Camino with stock seats.  If you were to install good low-
clearance seats, some of the Recaros would work, with relocated
mounting points I am pretty sure there would be no problem.

Depends on how far the seat will go back.  I would guess (?) that Chevelles and Elkys have the same seat tracks...just can't carry the cooler behind the seat in the cab. :*)

My question is would a person of my size (6'9") fit into an El Camino.  There aren't many 67's around here to try out.  I'm going to have to buy off the internet and want to know before I sell my truck.

I've driven a 67 chevelle and I fit into that.  Is the El Camino the same?

Hi Jason,

I think you should be able to fit in an early El Camino with no problem.  I have a friend that is about 6'3" and he drives a 74 Vette.  Trust me when I say that's a tight fit!

I'm 5'9" and the first time I got in my Elco I tried to put my arm on the door and couldn't reach it without leaning over a bit.  The interiors are pretty big by modern standards in my opinion.

Just to be sure, before you buy anything, why not go to a car show and explain to the owner of an Elco what your situation is and maybe you could try one on and see how you fit?
