Re: [Chevelle-list] Lee Hester Spammer

2010-10-23 Thread Roarke Ponce
The junk mail keeps getting through because the email is coming to you from the
Chevelle list, so the only way to block it would be to block
"chevelle-l...@chevelle.net" email address. At this point its up the
administrator of the list to block/remove him.

You might be able to create a Rule with your email software that looks at all
email coming in and if the message contains "Lee Hester" it will just auto
delete. Depends on what options your email program gives you.

Maybe the list admin might do something if we all start threatening to drop off
the list if he/she doesn't do something.

Re: [Chevelle-list] A different Type of Question

Well, actually the work of the compressor pumping the air heats it up and the
air actually comes out of the compressor with more moisture content. That is
why at our body shop we have to have a huge 3 stage oil and water filter on the
air lines before they go in the booth and oil/water traps on the lines into the
air tools.

The comment about Nitrogen being a inert gas is correct, it does not breakdown
the rubber compounds in the tire. However it is more expensive (due to the
cost of the machine), and of course you have normal air on the outside of the
tire, so lowering the oxidation on the inside of the tire is only half the
battle really. The tire store I deal with has a nitrogen system but they told
me privately its just a upsale device really.

On that Mercedes, I bet the sensors were probably calibrated for Nitrogen.

air (by cooling for instance) before filling the tires. It's probably pretty
dry coming out of a compressor anyway. I also can't see the advantage of
putting an inert gas in the tires. You still have air on the outside of the
tires.

Seems like a waste of money.

the consumer spends. It's a profit center (once the machine is
paid off) for the business that buys the equipment, nothing more.
Racing teams use nitrogen to fill the tires so that they can have
a consistent rise in temperature and pressure because of the lack
of moisture in the tire. Street tires don't need it.

I just purchased a new GMC vehicle and the dealer offered the
following new package called "Nitro Fill'. The claim is that
nitrogen is better than compressed air in a tire. They claim that
nitrogen is a dry gas and is free of moisture. It doesn't
deteriorate the rubber and it is lss susceptible to air loss with
temperature changes.

I suspect they went south of the border as this was happening a few years ago.
Unfortunately I lost a nice 1975 F100 4x4 back then, my father bought it brand

I don't fear for my collector cars as they are under lock and key but I do have

I would like to do some things to keep it from getting stolen too.

You know I take great pride in the fact that at 25 years old I was a ASE Master
Tech in repair/refinish/estimating. I also have a industry certification by
I-CAR of Platinum Individual. I am certified for a variety of Hybrid models as
well. What those things mean is that I spend hours and hours each year
attending classes, seminars and other industry gatherings to make sure I have a
noggin full of knowledge.

That allows me to look a a car and estimate what it will take to fix it,
blueprint the repair process from start to finish, stand my ground about
correct and complete repairs...I can repair dents, replace any panel on a car,
replace urethane set glass, sand mud, spray primer, color and clear coats.
Shall I go on? I guess this was a really long winded way of saying I have done
research, I am in the thick of collision repair every day.

Totals are up for reasons you apparently do not comprehend. The cost of
airbags, the recession, availability of good serviceable LKQ parts, the high
cost of new OE parts (that is a whole 'nuther debate on its own)...all have a
bearing on if a car is totaled. If a car is in demand for LKQ parts, then many
insurance companies will total that type of car sooner then others just because
salvage values are high on that model.

I think we can look at that video in this light: If a old car had to die, what
better way then in a way that a person does not die with it? It was a grand
example of how far vehicle technology has come since the 50s and I for one am
happy for that advancement. Are cars now perfect? No. But the cars are
safer now and that is all we can ask for is it not?

Wayne you are correct. Stronger is not the perfect word to describe the new
cars. They are better at transferring impact energies around the passenger
compartment. Rather then allowing the impact forces to bang up the occupants,
the frame rails crush and absorb some energy then the extremely strong
passenger cage transfers the remaining energy around the passengers. Pure
strength does come into play on the sides, the rockers, pillars and doors,
since the vehicle manufacturers have about 6-8 inches at most to stop a
incoming impact.

I have to agree with Tom. The front structure in that 09 Malibu is incredibly
strong, just like in just about every 09 sedan now made.
http://www.goodwrench.com/gmgoodwrenchjsp/gmspo/Chevrolet/Malibu/2008/02_Structure_Identification.pdf
shows what metals are in the front. As for the airbag timing, the computer in
a modern car can detect a collision event in 1-3 milliseconds. The airbags are
deployed in 3-5 milliseconds after that. The above average human reaction time
is 7 hundreds or a second.  (.0001 for the computer and .07 for the human {
http://www.visualexpert.com/Resources/reactiontime.html }). If you look close
at that video or any other with a modern airbag deployment, you see that the
occupants head is actually deflected away from the steering wheel, to the left
side in this case. Yes, he probably would have soft tissue damage (whiplash)
but he will walk away.

I work in a collision shop and every day I hear people say things like Kevin
did here. But they do not realize that they are still alive after that wreck
because the new car they drive is so incredibly strong. Most wrecks people
have today would have killed someone if they happened in a "old" car. Just my

I don't believe there is a vendor for 3" Cowl Hoods. When I was looking into

these, and they are fiberglass, not steel. I personally have a steel 2" cowl

As a warning, DO NOT buy anything from UP-22.com. They make absolutely horrible

Re: [Chevelle-list] Frame Alignment

2009-03-10 Thread ROARKE PONCE

Good point.

Hey Rick, what do you define as SAG? When you say the alignment isnt
close...in what way?? Toe, chamber, etc... What is the wheel base...??

I can probably get you frame dimensions for your car (I would have to dig
through a pile of old books). If the front of the frame does have sag, with
the doors and fenders not lining up, the damage on the frame is probably in the
kickup area under the firewall. Other then wheel base settings, that will
probably not affect your alignment unless both rails are different.

Like I said before, I wouldnt have anyone do any pulls on your car unless they
setup and measure it first and can point to the issue and show you what is
wrong.

Pull the whole front clip in one piece. You need to really see
what is going on. Unless the car has been wrecked. There should be no reason
for sag. You got a problem that will only get worse if you just start pulling
on it.

You changed upper arms. New bushings in the lower? Stock spinals?
Original springs? Ball joints?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Frame Alignment

2009-03-10 Thread ROARKE PONCE

They make 3 leg motor slings that rest on the fender flanges and the front core
support and that is what you have to use to hold the motor up off the mounts so
that you do not tear stuff up. If they leave the bolts in the holes and then
make the pulls, I would replace the bolts and mounts after wards. Yah, it
maybe usable, but after being stressed in that manner, I would not run it in my
own car. Its up to you on that one. Alot of this depends on how far and how
hard they have to pull...

OK. Its actually good that the sheet metal alignment is off. They can use the
body to help determine how far to go with the pulls. If the car needs to be
painted and such all the better too...cause they have to pull beyond the point
they need the frame to be at and try and let it settle back into place. Think
of setting a compound fracture. You have to pull the bone ahead and beyond
then let it rest back into position.

I would definitely have the shop check for cracks before and after the pulls.
If they are a good shop, they should be OK with you asking to see the car after
setup and before the first pulls. Have them show you where the frame is
damaged and then again after they make the pulls, to show you where they have
repaired it before they undercoat anything. This way too you can have a idea
as to what they have done (Have them take photos if you cant be there in
person). Remember the steel on these old beasts is extremely mild steel, heat
doesnt hurt it unless its dripping steel on the floor. The more you can cold
straighten the better, but if its off by as much as it sounds, they very well
may have to heat a spot or two.

I hope they can fix it for you...

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Frame Alignment

The frame on my 72 el camino has some sag.I've never been able to get the
recommended alignment specs to optimize the installed Global West Upper control
arms. I finally found a body shop in this city who still has the PRINTED books
with the necessary specs. Shop is a semi-retired father and son. They did
collision work on my Jeep 12-15 years ago. And it looked good for the 6-8
years I kept the car so I have a bit of confidence in them.

What do I need to question them on/ask them to check - to ensure a thorough
job? They said its a 6-7 hour job - sound reasonable? Also said that its
possible that the motor mounts will tear- they loosen them but no guarantee
that they won't tear - reasonable? Thanx.

True. If those springs are still intact though, the cams around which the
levers pivot will wear at a different rate then the lever. This causes the
hole in the lever to wear into a oval shape. Thus it requires more travel to
activate each part of the latch. Often the remotes (the inside handle part)
will wear in the same manner. That might be why the inside handle was not
working on one car and the outside wasnt working on another.

My father-in-law said to take the latch and handle out and slip hoses (old
brake hose, gas line, whatever has a small enough ID to fit) over the ends of
the levers. If I remember correctly, you can put hoses on both sides if needed
or just one. Depends on how much slack you have to take up. Buys you some
time before replacing the latch.

Hope this helps.

Are you concerned about weight? Thickness? Sound deadening capabilities
verses heat protection? What are you going to put on top of it??

I have a 65 Malibu SS convertible. The car is gutted. What does
everyone think about using truck bed roll on liner on the floor pans vs Lizard
Skin or Dyno mat?

Re: [Chevelle-list] black cars

2008-07-18 Thread ROARKE PONCE
We just found a product that we use now at my bodyshop. Its made by a company
called Wizards. Shine Master I think. Its only 12:45am here...so I am not
100% on the name. I will double check it in the morning and let you know.

We had a 77 Firebird t/a that we just delivered. It was a candy red/pink/blue
color (don't ask, my 4 year old daughter dubbed it "Clown Car" when she saw it
rolled outta the booth). But anyway, we did our final polish with this Wizards
stuff. 3 weeks later and several washes and no wax on the car at all and no
swirl marks or anything. My painter says that it works slick on black. The
shop that turned me onto this stuff says it removes swirl marks forever, but I
have not used it that long yet.

Application is pretty simple if you are capable with a high speed buffer. Just
dribble a small amount on the panel, turn your buffer speed up and lay into the
panel. Not for cars with inadequate clear film build. I will check with my
painter about how it works on single stage, if it does...

Hope this helps, I will let you know more in the morning about the full name
and anything else my painter can think of for ya.
